the bay bridge will move forward. tom is in the newsroom. if this fix is being worked on right now how soon could the bridge hope? >> reporter: way sooner than anyone thought caltrans contractor is building the stiffeners needed to make the back up supports, now the primary ones. that will take another week or two to make them. by mid-august all the engineering reviews will determine if the bridge with open without the permanent fix in december. if so this quick fix could be done with in just two weeks after that. the toll bridge oversight committee would then decide on the opening date which still could be labor day weekend. we are developing this story and will update at ten. >> and now to more developing news where a brush fire has burned more than 100 acres. the fire started in bay point around one this afternoon at the old concord naval weapons

station. employees nearby were briefly told to shelter in place. no homes or structures were damaged. 20-mile an hour winds made the fire fight difficult. officials say it's about 90% contained, crews are mopping up and will be out there for some time looking for hot spots. >> a missing child, a slain 8- year-old, and a loved neighbor shot driving in her neighborhood, three terrible crimes in oakland in just 15 days and police have announced no arrests and no leads. july 10th. 21-month-old girl disappears, more than two weeks later we still don't know what happened to her. a week later an 8-year-old shot and killed while at a sleep over. no arrests, and then yesterday, judy solomon driving in her neighborhood, shot and killed. three shock crimes that seem no closer to being solved. we are live at oakland police headquarters with how residents wondering what can be done

>> residents say they are conflicted. they say they want to see the high profile crimes solved as soon as possible. on the other hand they say they believe that the oakland police department is critically under staffed they understand that officers just can't be everywhere at once. oakland police are investigating the death of a 66- year-old judy solomon, gunned down in her own car yesterday afternoon. neighbors say they are worried. >> scary, knowing we can walk around something like that. >> reporter: solomon's death is just the latest in a string of high profile crimes including the death of an 8-year-old. shot to death last wednesday at a sleep over and the disappearance of a 21-month-old who father reported her missing july 10 10th. there is a disconnect between the police and the community they serve says one, that means police don't get the tips they need from the public to solve the crimes. >> i think the key thing is to

everybody to enroll. that is the best way that we can again, show our support for city college. >> reporter: the college has seen a sharp drop of enrollment since news emerged that the accreditation would be pulled. >> stanford joins a long resisting of options hit by hackers, many woke up to e- mails warning about it. rob roth is live at stanford where investigators are looking in to what information has been compromised >> reporter: stanford university said that this computer attack appears similar to other cyber attacks on other institutions. stanford said it's investigating the attack and advised it's 20,000 students, and staff to change their password. >> i feel it's a violation. i go to the health center here, connected to -- so that -- anyone can see how much i have paid. >> reporter: she may be able to feel better. there is no evidence any health or financial information was

compromised or social security numbers. stanford is far from alone in having its computer system compromised despite taking security measures. >> as good as the security professionals may be, the breachers are also very good and keep getting better. so there is always going to be a back and forth. >> reporter: about three months ago they pearced a twitter account of the associated press and tweeted falsely there had been an explosion at the white house. that sent the stock market plunging. apple reported it's website for developer has been breached, even new york times was a victim. what purpose do the hackers have? >> normally they have a financial motive. for example, you want to capture credit cards, you want to get personal information so you can steal someone's identity and then maybe get credit in their name. there is also the hacks that are designed to embarrass organizations. >> reporter: the advice is to change your passwords frequently and don't keep using the same one over and over.

seat. that moved republicans one step closer to breaking the democrat super majority. >> for the democratic majority it's a loss because they have now a weak hold on their super majority. a super majority which is two thirds of the vote allows them to raise taxes without having any support from republicans. >> he said that democrats may be more aggressive now in campaigning now that their super majority is at risk. >> the epa has approved a state plan to improve its drinking water after earlier threatening to cut off funding. they had previously warned california water official that the states wasn't giving out funds properly. approval means that new projects can get started aimed at improving contaminated water supplies. >> unfortunately, there are public water systems that are so contaminated that people have to spend their own money to buy bottled water.

winchester boulevard. a 92-year-old mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake and hit the building. nobody was hurt. the driver was not cited and was allowed to drive home. >> we have new information on the death of a woman in her san jose home yesterday. police say a 62-year-old woman was found near death in her apartment at the creek view inn complex. she was taken to the hospital where she died. initially investigators though she had been the victim of foul play but late today say the victim was not the victim of a homicide. they haven't said how the woman died. >> two lake county men are accused of sexually abusing a teen runnaway and keeping her in a box. the two men have been charged with manufacturing and districting more than a thousand pound pounds of marijuana and using a minor in a drug operation. investigate officers first
