turn. they have the cab up on the tow truck. they have to get the trailer out of there still, and this ramp is going to be closed until they do that. brian flores is on the scene. we'll have a live report coming up. a bigger fog bank and a westerly wind equals a cooler pattern today. 60s to 80s. a couple low 90s. time is 7:01. we have breaking news from the south bay. police in santa clara investigating reports of an early morning sexual assault. the victim says it was a stranger that attacked her. ktvu's jana janine de la january -- janine de la vega has been talking to police. what are they saying out there. >> reporter: they are staying tight lipped because again, they're still investigating. police have the apartment complex roped off so ootheca investigate an alleged rape that occurred -- so they can investigate an alleged rape

that occurred this morning. police responded to a 911 call that an intruder had broken into an apartment and raped the woman. the victim who was in her 20s was sleeping and woke up to find a strange man hovering over her. he sexually assaulted her and ran away. a broken screen was in the back window where they believe he entered and he went out the front door. neighbors are disturbed. >> i'm a little bit more anxious. want to make sure my windows and doors are locked, so you know, there's nobody trying to get into my house. and it's right across the street, so yes, it's very scary. >> reporter: police are collecting what evidence they can. the victim is at a local hospital. police are interviewing her as well as her roommate who we're told was sleeping at the time. the woman told police that the man was a short latino male wearing dark clothing. that's a vague description, so police really don't have much to go on. they're not sure if he ran away

on foot or if there was any get away car. you're looking at a live picture of the other side of the apartment complex. this is not the side where it happened but i wanted to show you how high the windows are because it took place in one of the first floor apartments. that's pretty high, we asked the neighbor how could someone break through the back window and he said the apartment where it happened, there's a gas meter there so it might have been easy to perhaps jump up on there and get a little bit higher to gain access into an apartment. that was his theory, but again, a police spokesperson is supposed to be here within the next hour to give more information and we will pass that along to you. reporting live from santa clara. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, a high speed chase just hours ago in martinez ended with a crash on highway 4 that injured two people. chp officers tried toe pull over a car for reckless driving about 1:00 this morning. the driver took off.

then crashed. the helicopter took one of the victims in the car to a hospital in fairfield. the other was taken by ambulance to highland hospital in oakland. at this point we have no word on their conditions. a man accused of using pepper spray to force his way into a home in fremont is on the loose this morning. police say the suspect rang the doorbell at a home on porter street and blake road yesterday evening. a woman says when she opened the door, the man doused her with pepper spray. investigators say he then got into a fight with a man inside the home and shots were fired. a s.w.a.t team responded but the suspect managed to escape. the family is not seriously hurt. the suspect described as a thin 30-year-old latino man with a long bushy ponytail, a goatee and tattoos above both eyebrows. happening today, in just two hours, oakland city leaders will hold a news conference to discuss the city's growing

violent crime problem. it will be held in oakland's max well park neighborhood where a shocking crime took place earlier this week. paul chambers joins us now from the neighborhood where a lot of people very upset by this. paul. good morning, pam, that was just two days agatha judy salamon was shot and killed in the area we're standing. two hours from now, members of the community and oakland city county will come out and demand public safety. judy salamon was shot two days ago. she lived in the max well park area of oakland and was shot and killed two blocks from her home. she was picking up animals for a pet sitting business. last night members of the community came together to show they're support to honor judy including her family from southern california. >> we're devastated. she's my only sister and our mother died when judy was 17. and it has been a tough life for her.

>> reporter: we're told salamon was working with members of the community to bring private security to the area. members of this community and other parts of oakland are outraged by the number of killings and say salamon's death is the final straw and they hope salamon didn't die in vain. >> i'm hoping if any good comes out of this, maybe people can really come together and do more neighborhood watch and get the patrol going in the area. >> reporter: salamon also leaves behind her pet chihuahua, animal control must keep the dog at the shelter, and plan to find a home by the dog by the end of the week. we can come out here live. this is a picture of salamon. there is a memorial dedicated to her that happened last night. at this hour, candles are still burning for her. later on this morning, two hours from now, members of the community and city council will come back out here and demand

public safety because they did not want her to die in vain. live in oakland, i'm paul chambers. santa clara leaders looking for an alternative ambulance service. they are concerned the current provider won't be able to fulfill its contract. the company's ceo talked to the officials about the financial problems. last week the san jose mercury reported that rural metro missed a crucial bond payment. a bay area credit union is replacing thousands of debit cards after rallyist super market chain was hit by a cyber attack. redwood credit union has reissued more than 18,000 debit cards. they took the action on behalf of customers who shop at raley's, bell air and nob hill stores. and there have been 200 cases of fraud involving card holders at those stores. now, to our continuing coverage of the labor talks between b.a.r.t.

and its unions. we're now just nine days away from another august 4th for the dead lin august 4th -- deadline, august 4th for another strike. they are set to resume at 9:00 this morning. there are growing concerns that the two sides will not be able to reach a deal before the august 4th deadline. transit leaders look to go hire charter buses for commuters if there's another strike but it would taken 8000 buses to carry the passengers b.a.r.t. normally carries each day. a lot of people were surprised and happy with the charter buses. it worked out i think better than sitting in traffic extra hours. but a lot of people did that as well. >> the only thing that i worry about is the capacity pam. the ftc has said there's no way they can do it unless they get 8000 buses. that's not going to happen. obviously we'll be hear to help you out if the b.a.r.t. strike happens. i for one am hoping they can come to an agreement so it

doesn't. we'll see what happens there. we have some traffic troubles this morning at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. you can see it's very slow. this is because of an earlier crash on the bay bridge that was cleared about half hour to 40 minutes ago. it blocked two lanes for a time. things are slowly getting better, but it's a 30 minute plus delay getting into san francisco. in vallejo, we have a problem with a ramp closed from southbound sonoma boulevard to eastbound 37 in a fuel spill. you can see the truck, the cab, this was flipped over, the cab is right, but they have to get the trailer, which is still flipped over, over to the side. here comes the trailer there. you can see it's still over the little embankment. this ramp is not going to be open within the next hour. it's going to take too long for them to clear it up. we'll let you know when it does open. and the morning commute is okay on the san mateo and dunbar bridge in case you're looking for alternatives. 101, 280, 85, has been quiet.

and that includes 101 on the peninsula. a very good morning. sunshine for some already, but we have a much bigger fog bank and that's making a good push inland, a bigger fog bank equals cooler, 50s, 60s by the coast, that cooler forecast, and the fog was down by the deck and a nice tweet from joslyn. what's the deal with the fog, it's always foggy in daley city. i'm well aware of the fog patterns. when you get the fog up and the inland temp, people are like where the is fog. it's starting to move in. the thunderstorms erupted in the sierra yesterday, tahoe, truckee. and still muggy, and southern california dealing with rain. palm springs, san diego, los angeles, tropical moisture still making its presence felt in southern california. it's taking the turn and will not make it here. maybe a few high clouds. more 50s on the temps and when travis is 30, they're done.

not until late last night. we have new information on spain's worst train disaster in years. the investigation now focusing on the train's engineer who is now considered a suspect. investigators say surveillance video there, you can see, it suggests that the train was going twice the speed limit when it crashed wednesday. authorities say 78 people were killed, including one american. the train's engineer still in the hospital. there are reports, though, that he posted a facebook picture of a train's speedometer last year and bragged about going 125 miles per hour. investigators are analyzing the train's black boxes. there's new information about the hard landing by a southwest airlines jet. the nose gear touched down on the runway before the mainlanding gear. now, in most normal landings, the nose is held off the ground until after the main wheels touch down. federal officials won't say if the pilot error contributed to

the hard landing. they also won't say if the nose wheel should have been strong enough to hold up to that nose first landing. time now 7:16. now this morning, iran now reportedly interested in direct talks with the united states about iran's nuclear program. and reportedly iran's neighbor iraq is reportedly ready to help arrange those face to face negotiations. now, these talks would probably help ease the tensions between the united states and the president has not ruled out using military force if iran tries to build one. we're following new developments in washington dc where the lincoln memorial was vandalized overnight. kilah campbell live in washington d.c. to tell us what happened just minutes ago. >> reporter: just about two

minutes ago, tourists started going up the steps. the security officers removed the police line that was blocking them at the bottom of the steps. however at top of the steps, you can't see them but there are orange and white barricades on the other side so people cannot get up to the statute. we know that they were cleaning off the paint for about an hour or so this morning. we got a close up of the paint earlier today. you could see it was splattered on the statute, the leg of the statute and also on the base of the statute, and one of the rangers told us that the paint was not a latex base. it's going to be tougher to remove. it seems right now that they have gotten at least most if not all of the work done. they are not going to open the chamber, the area where the statute is sitting until they know for sure that the area was dry from the cleaning process. we heard from the spokesperson for the national parks service. she said she is heartbroken over this. >> we feel very very fortunate. this is such a national

treasure that permanent damage would have just been devastating. and so we're very glad that we're going to be able to restore it to the way it was. >> reporter: also at that press conference, a lieutenant with the u.s. park police, they tell us they don't have anybody in custody right now. they do not have a specific suspect in mind. we did know that they are reviewing surveillance video and when i asked if they spotted someone in the video, she could not answer for me at that point. live in washington, kilah campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the obama administration is warning states they will take them head on if they start infringing on voting rights, especially those for minorities. they may try to change voting laws, now that the supreme court struck down the voting rights act. the obama administration wants to keep states from enacting laws like requiring photo ids. we know what caused the

wildfire in southern california. it was caused by an electrical equipment failure on private property. now, the fire in riverside county started on july 15th. it forced the evacuation of several thousands of people including those living near the palm springs area. the fire burned 27,000 aches and destroyed 1/2 23 structures -- 23 structures including 7 homes. a fire caused one family to seek shelter. the fire started at 10:30 on north 3rd street. it was brought under control a half hour later. damage limited to one of the apartments, and fortunately, no one was injured. the cause of the fire, though, still under investigation. time now, 7:20. as i left the house this morning, it was cooler. >> definitely cool. >> right away. >> things are starting to cool down around the bay area. look at this live picture out the window. meteorologist steve paulson is coming back.

bars are specifically saying they will not drink stoli vodka after the russian government banned public displays of homosexuality and imposed fines on anyone who holds gay pride rallies. bay area bars say they still support the stoli brand. >> stoli here in america has done nothing but support the gay community. >> and stoli's ceo posted a letter on the company web site saying they sponsor gay pride events around the world and opposes the russian government's actions. santasanta cruz police are looking for the vandals who spray painted death threats to police officers on several elementary school murals. the names of several officers were sprayed on murals at bay view along with the threats. investigators think gang members are behind the vandalism. the murals were made by graduating 4th grade classes as part of an annual tradition: there's fall out from a

proposed ordinance banning people from sleeping in their cars in palo alto. they worry it might cause homeless people to migrate south along the peninsula. cities that do not have it is menlo park and east palo alto. if you are waking up, joining us, getting ready to head out the door, there are a couple big problems you should know about. let's check in with sal. good morning, you are absolutely right. we have the big back up at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's getting slightly better. the crash in the 6:00 hour took away two lanes and that has been cleared. and traffic is slow on the toll plaza. usually on friday it's not slow at all. this morning we have a back up of 30 minutes plus. and a big rig on the ramp on southbound 29. sonoma boulevard to eastbound 37. they have removed the cab or righted the cab. now they have to right the trailer and then open up that ramp. they might have to do guardrail work as well.

they also absorb some of the fume. 37 is not affected. if you're driving on the peninsula, 101 looks pretty good both directions heading down to the san jose area and across the bay, hayward to fremont is looking good. before we get to the weather, you may want to do your own search on it. there was record cold and snow down in south america, by the way, some areas seeing snow that hadn't seen snow since 1921. record lows in the 20s. do a search on cold south america and you'll see the information coming in. for us, we have a cooler pattern here. back into the 80s for locations that were in the 90s or 100s a couple days ago. it will take a couple days for clear lake, middletown, vacaville, and for most, 70s, 80s, in the inland, pam. tons of garlicky goodness will be served in gilroy for the next three days. we are out there live this

morning where they are firing up the first batches right now. we're going to give you a taste so to speak of what's on the menu. and the potentially hazardous car go that merge responsiblers did not know was on board -- responders did not know was on flight 214. and when one of the onramps will be open as a result of a big rig crash as mornings on 2 continues.

welcome back to mornings on 2, it is coming up on 7:30. we are following some big traffic news right now. two major accidents are creating headaches for commuters. sal is in the ktvu morning traffic center with the update. sal. >> we're going to go to the bay bridge first because it's affecting a lot of people, and the toll plaza is backed up now. we're seeing improvement here. the traffic is beginning to move much better as you drive through. but it's still a very big crowd. 30 minutes plus at the bay bridge toll plaza because of a crash in the 6:00 hour that took away two lanes on the incline. that injury crash is gone. meanwhile, another accident in vallejo is creating problems in solano county. and a detour has been set up. brian flores is at an onramp where a big rig flipped over two hours ago. >> reporter: still a lot of work to do, and as you can see behind me, the big rig still is

here. they have righted the passenger cab, but there's still a lot of work to do in terms of getting the trailer out. also as you mentioned just a few minutes ago as well as the guardrail work that needs to be fixed as well. as commuters and workers try to get this fixed as fast as they can in vallejo. crews will be here perhaps another hour or two, according to chp to get the big rig cleared. just about 40 minutes ago, a tow truck was able to right the passenger cabin as we mentioned and 30 minutes ago, they towed it away. the trailer remains. according to the chp this morning, around 4:10, the driver was going onto the onramp and perhaps took the turn a little too fast going onto eastbound 37. it overturned and the onramp was shut down quickly and has been closed since then. the driver had minor lacerations to his head and the chp says he complained of chest pain as a result of the seat belt in impact. he was taken to kizer hospital in vallejo where he's expected to be okay.

>> we're not sure is inside the trailer. the driver wasn't aware as well. things may have been jostled and turned around and we didn't want it spilling out, whatever it was. we weren't able to get into the cab as of yet to find the transportation log as well. >> reporter: now, caltrans crews are also pouring and then sweeping absorbent for the small amount of oil and fuel that spilled onto the road. in terms of traffic, southbound 29 closed and traffic being detoured onto surface trees. and if you want to get onto 37, northbound on 29 and take the onramp back on 37. back out here live, you can see the crews there now sweeping the absorbent that was used to absorb the small amounts of oil and fuel that spilled as a result of in big ligament crash, crash -- big rig crash, and then over here, they're moving the trailer that was there a few minutes ago.

there's a couple tow trucks on the other side of the guardrail and moving the trailer as we speak. chp says whatever is in the trailer is not a major concern. still going to be time before the onramp opens. we're live in vallejo, brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. . ktvu that has learned that passengers and emergency responders faced another possible danger after asiana flight 214 crashed at sfo. one source tells ktvu at least 45 pounds of yellow phosphorous was in the cargo bay of that jet. it can rapidly react with oxygen and catch fire at temperatures 10 degrees above room temperature. >> we dealt with an engine fire and we had some extension into the aircraft which developed into what you saw during the incident. could phosphorous if it was there lead to, you know, worsening conditions, absolutely, but to my knowledge, we never saw indications of that. >> now, the ntsb sent an e-mail

saying the shipment was yellow foster, which is not classified as a hazardous material. it doesn't know where the chemical was going, who was sending it or if any was exposed. oakland police are preparing for more protests this weekend. there was violence and vandalism in downtown oakland hours after the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman case in florida. and oakland's acting police chief is vowing to do everything possible to keep the peace this weekend. next week, the oakland city council will consider banning the so called tools of o -- tools of violence from ordinances in the future. it would make it crimes to carry hammers, clubs, wrenches and other destructive items during demonstrations. a shocking admission from a juror on the george zimmerman jury. >> george zimmerman got away

with murder. >> why she is now changing her position. hang right now, the cleveland ohio man charged with holding three women captive for close to ten years just arrived in court where he could accept a plea deal. i want to take you live to the court right now. this is going on in cleveland ohio. ariel castro could plead guilty today as part of a deal to avoid the death penalty. he faces 977 charges included kidnapping, raping and sexually abusing. if no plea deal is reached. castro's trial is scheduled to start on august 5th. time 7:35. new this morning, investigating a crash involving a taxi cab and an suv in san francisco. this happened about 10:40 last night on gulf and oak streets. three people were in the cab. one person was in the suv. the police are saying all are expected to survive. and there was a crash late last night in the south bay. the san jose fire department posted four photographs on its

twitter page of the accident. firefighters say the vehicle slammed into two trees at center road and east alma. the driver was trapped inside there. firefighters had to use the jaws of life goat them out. we haven't received any information yet on the extent of the injuries. a former uc davis police officer involved in a pepper spraying incident two years ago is now seeking workers' compensation for psychiatric distress. john pike says he received a number of threats after being identified as the officer who pepper sprayed protesters on the ground in 2011. pike was fired last year after an investigation. his case is scheduled to be heard in sacramento next month. time now, 7:36. happening today, chefs and food lovers, they're gathering in gilroy. marking a milestone. the 35th annual gilroy garlic festival. ktvu's katie utehs is there in gilroy with a taste of what's

sonoma boulevard to eastbound 37 continues to be closed. there is the cab of the big rig involved. the trailer is overt side, and this ramp remains closed. bay bridge, we had a back up there at the toll plaza because of an earlier crash this the 6:00 hour. still 30 minutes plus, although we are seeing some improvement getting into san francisco. and if you're driving across the san mateo or dumbarton bridge, that would be a decent alternate. no problems there. on the peninsula, traffic does move well and san jose, we have had a light commute in the santa clara valley. let's go to steve. sal, it's going to be a mess getting into the city. so many things are going on. cubs are in town. lots of low clouds and fog. we have a ramp up of the fog bank. there's a low coming in making a strong push and lifts that fog up. there's a rip roaring sea

breeze, and a bigger fog bank. some areas on the coast and near san francisco that always see the fog, but for some inland areas, it's been, well, it's been warm to hot. still be hot inland for a few, but most locations will be back into the 80s and we'll continue the cooling trend into sunday and put it in a holding pattern f. late afternoon and also reno, good thunderstorm activity there. and southern california dealing with rain. look at that heavy in palm springs, things lighting up down there. san diego, heading down to delmar where the turf meets the surf and even los angeles, lax reported rain this morning. 50s on the temps. much cooler here and also the key is that that westerly breeze. when it gets up to 30, i hang my hat on that. that is a strong sign that it's going to be cooler all the way to sacramento and you can see

precaution, we're told he's in good condition. the occupational safety and health administration may inspect that area as soon as today. construction crews may be moving ahead with the so called quick fix for the eastern span of the bay bridge. ktvu has learned special materials designed to make sure the new bridge will be able to withstand a major earthquake will be ready early next month. now, this seismic safety material, they call it a chem will be used after the failure of a few dozen metal rods caused major safety concerns. there will be several safety reviews in the weeks ahead. this idea of using the shem's to open the bridge sooner is being vetted. no decision has been made if they can be used that way and no decisions on an opening date. it is still possible the bay bridge could open during the labor day weekend as originally planned. on the crews will spray for mosquitoes in east san jose to

stop the spread of the west nile virus. it begins at 11:00 p.m. between landis avenue just east of interstate 680 to the foothills. about a dozen dead birds found in santa clara county have tested positive. a couple mosquitoes were also infected and the county says the fog like spray is not toxic to humans or pets. doctors are reporting six new human cases of west nile virus in california. five of them are in los angeles county. the 6th is in glen county in the central valley. the state's first infection of the year occurred in sacramento county. that man died but it's actually still unclear if he died from west nile or an underlying health problem. time now, 7:50. the gold state warriors getting ready to move across the bay, but why that move may be a lot more expensive than first thought. next, breaking news about the embattled former head of the ems, the new charges,

guardrail on the ramp from southbound 29 to eastbound 37. they are working fast and you can see they're doing the guardrail repair on the spot. more on this coming up. let's go back to the desk. thank you sal. we begin with breaking news we first reported at 5:30 this morning. a woman in santa clara is in the hospital, ktvu's january january -- janine de la vega is outside the apartment complex where the woman says she was attacked. >> reporter: crime technicians are on the scene where police say an alleged rape took place on the first floor apartment here at kiley boulevard and holmes sted rode. they are in the initial part of the investigation and the intruder may have entered through the back window. police got a 911 call that the woman had been sexually assaulted. she said she had been sleeping and woke up to find an unknown man over her bed. he held a box cutter to her

throat and sexually assaulted her. their appears to be evidence of a broken screen on a back window and the intruder may have exited through the front door. the alleged attack has surprised neighbors. >> never thought anything like i was unsafe or couldn't come, had to watch my surroundings when walking home from parking on the street. >> reporter: now you feel like you do. >> yeah, toy. definitely have to make sure, that, you know, i keep a watchful eye coming in at night. >> reporter: police are on the scene collecting evidence. the victim is at a local hospital being evaluated to see if there's any injuries. the police also want to interview her again to confirm the information. they also plan on interviewing her roommate who was apparently sleeping at the time of this alleged attack. if we have anymore information, we'll bring it to you. right now, police say they have a very vague description of the suspect, so they're not releasing very specific details about that. but as far as we know, the

suspect is still at large. reporting live from santa clara. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, a high speed chase just hours ago in martinez ended with crash on highway 4 that injured two people. chp officers tried to pull over a car for reckless driver shortly before 1:00. the driver took off, then crashed near el hombre avenue. a helicopter took one victim to the hospital in fairfield. the other went by ambulance to highland hospital in oakland. we do not have word on their conditions. time is 8:02. a man accused of using pepper spray to force his way into a house on fremont is on the loose this morning. police say the suspect rang the doorbell to the home on porter street and blake howell road yesterday evening. the woman says opened the door. he doused her with pepper spray and he got into a fight with a man in the house and shots were

fired. the s.w.a.t team was called to the scene and the suspect escaped. no one in the home was seriously hurt. now, the suspect's described as a thin, 30-year-old latino man with a long bushy ponytail. a goatee and tattoos over both eyebrows,. happening today, an hour from right now, oakland city leaders hold a news conference. they're going to talk about the growing violent crime problem. it would be held in oakland's max well park neighborhood where a shocking crime happened earlier this week. paul chambers is out there right now with the latest on what's going on right now. >> we are in the community where the 66-year-old woman was shot and killed days ago. they're still honoring her in this community. you can see there's a picture of her and some flowers that a 66-year-old judy salamon: now as we said an hour from now,

oakland city council members, she was shot and killed, just a few blocks from her home. salamon was picking up animals in the area for her pet sitting business. last night members of the community came together to show their support and honor judy salamon, including her family from southern california. >> we're just devastated. she's my only sister, and her mother, our mother died when judy was 17. and it has been a tough life for her. >> reporter: we're told salamon was working with the members of the community to bring private security to the area. members of this community and other parts of oakland are outraged by the number of killings and say salamon's death is just the final straw and they hope she didn't die in vain. >> i'm hoping if any good comes out of this, maybe people can really come together and do more neighborhood watch and get the patrol going in the area.

reissued more than 18,000 debit cards. redwood took action on behalf of customers who shop at raley's bell air and nob hill stores. creditors have said there have been 200 cases of fraud involving its card holders at the stores. time is 8:05. now to our continuing coverage of labor talks between b.a.r.t. and its unions. now we're 9 days away from another potential strike on august 4th. negotiations in the b.a.r.t. labor talks are due to resume in just about an hour from right now. but there are growing concerns they won't be able to reach a deal before the august 4th august 4th deadline. transit leaders are looking into hiring charter buses for commuters. it would take 8000 buses to carry the passengers that b.a.r.t. normally carries every day. now, today is your last chance to get a look at the new cars that b.a.r.t. wants to buy. b.a.r.t. says it expects to have another

. a lot of low clouds, fog, we see sunshine. and we see the fog retreat back to the coast and cool and windy by parts of the coast. a busy road to the sierra, should be back to normal today after a mud slide. look at this. summer rain storms caused this mess. it shut down part of interstate 80 yesterday afternoon. a half foot of mud and debris covered the westbound lanes in nevada county, west of the california and nevada border. those lanes opened up again late last night.

new information about spain's worst train disaster in decades. the investigation now focusing on the train's engineer. now considered a suspect. investigators say surveillance video here shows, suggests the train was going twice the speed limit when it crashed wednesday. authorities now say 78 people were killed including one american. the train's engineer is still in the hospital. there are reports he posted a facebook picture of a train's prompt last year and bragged about -- speedometer last year and bragged about going 125 miles per hour. the ntsb has new information about the southwest airlines jet that had its nose gear collapse when it landed in new york earlier this week. the video shows sparks flying as the plane skidded down the runway at la guardia airport. now, investigators say it now looks, you can see it, it appears the nose gear hit the runway before the mainlanding

gear. that's the opposite of what is supposed to happen during a normal landing. we are following new developments in washington d.c. where the lincoln memorial was vandalized overnight. kyla campbell is live in washington d.c. to tell us what police found on the famous statute. >> reporter: u.s. park police tell me right now there is no suspect, no one is in custody, but they do continue to review that surveillance video that was captured overnight. take a look for yourself at the green paint splattered on the statute of ncoln. it was discovered just around 1:00 local time by a security guard. these preservation crews you see here have been working for hours. they tell me they are using nontoxic citrus based to remove the paint and not disturb the memorial. we are all blocked off from the chamber, and the u.s. park workers tell me they're

disgusted by this vandalism. >> you know, it's obviously disappointing someone would disrespect something for the public. >> this is such a national treasure that permanent damage would have just been devastating. >> reporter: the spokeswoman says that they hope to have the chamber open to tourists at some point today but right now there is no guaranteed timetable as to when that could happen. live in washington, kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. the next round of across the board government spending cuts could take a heavy toll on the u.s. economy. these latest cuts known as sequestration begin next week. a new study finds they could cost as many as 1.6 million jobs across the country. sequestration affects everything from the u.s. military to unemployment benefits. new this morning, the time is 8:16, in just the past 30 minutes, the cleveland ohio man charged with holding three

women captive for almost a decade, just accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. in exchange, ariel castro would be getting life without parole plus 1000 years in prison. he came to court about an hour ago. now, he faces 977 charges including kidnapping, rape and sexual abuse. the three women disappear between 2002 and 2004. they escaped from castro's house two months ago. nestled this morning of photos appears to show former nfl star aaron hernandez holding a gun the very night his friend was murdered. authorities say the surveillance photos were recorded hours before and minutes after odin lloyd was shot to death. these photos were taken in hernandez's home by his own surveillance system. the former tight end for the patriots has pleaded not guilty. an associate of hernandez, who prosecutors say was at the murder scene, well he's due in

court later today. happening right now, pope francis continues his historic visit to brazil. i'm going to take you there live this morning where you can see the huge crowds as it has been throughout his whole visit. a million and a half people attended his mass in rio yesterday. there's a live look this morning right now. a few minutes we stood at the balcony of a brazilian palace over looking the crowd. the pope met with religious leaders and after wards he will sit down for the traditional lunch with the young people of all the continent. attendance for world youth day celebrations could reach a couple million spectators. we know what caused the massive wildfire earlier this month in southern california. investigators say the idyllwild fire was caused by an electrical equipment failure on private property. that fire in riverside county started on july 15th and forced the evacuation of several thousands people living near

the palm springs area. the fire burned more than 27,000 acres and destroyed 23 structures, including 7 homes. firefighters in contra costa county are making sure a grass fire does not flare up. yesterday it burned 120 acres of open fields at the former  naval weapons station on nickels road in bay point. firefighters dealt with 30 miles per hour winds out there. part of port chicago highway was shut down and employees at a nearby chemical plant were ordered to stay inside. no word on what caused the fire but investigators say past fires came from the brakes of trains rolling through the area. time is 8:19. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg preparing to take another political stand. next month zuckerberg will speak at the west coast premier of a movie about undocumented immigrants in america. the movie's called documenting. it will be shown next monday in

welcome back to mornings on 2. we have been following two breaking news stories involving the friday morning commute, the traffic on the bay bridge, worse than normal. sal joins us from the traffic center with current problems on the road. the bridge problem is still with us, unfortunately. the crash happened in the 6:00 hour. but the back up is still there and just because it is friday and it's a little bit lighter volume, we are seeing improvement but still about a 20 to 25 minute delay at the toll plaza. this happened because of a crash that took away two lanes in the 6:00 hour with an injury crash. as i mentioned, the crash is gone, but the traffic is still backed up. meanwhile, overturned big rig in vallejo caused parts of solano county traffic not to be good.

brian flores is on an an ramp where workers are cleaning up the mess. good morning brian. >> reporter: good morning sal. we like to look at the silver lining on a friday mess of a commute this morning, as you can see, though, still quite a mess on the southbound 29 eastbound 37 onramp: you can see crews there trying to get this overturned big rig. at least a trailer portion off of the side of the road there. and caltrans crews are working to fix the guardrail. they're working as fast as they can, quickly to get commuters to use this of ramp here in vallejo. at 4:10 this morning, the driver of the big rig was going onto the onramp and perhaps took the onramp a little too fast. it overturned and it's been closed since then. the driver had minor lacerations to his head and complained of chest pain as a result of the seat belt and impact. drugs and alcohol were not factors in this accident. he was taken to kizer hospital in vallejo where he is expected to be okay. >> we're not sure what's inside of the trailer. the driver wasn't aware what he

was transporting as well. we didn't want to open it because things may have been jostled, turned around in there, and we didn't want it spilling out whatever it was. we weren't able to get into the cab as of yet to find the transportation log as well. >> reporter: now, caltrans crews were also pouring some absorbent onto the roadways to absorb some of the small of oil and on the road. in terms of traffic, southbound 29, eastbound 37 onramp closed until further notice. traffic is being detoured on the surface streets and if you want to get back on eastbound 37. head south on sonoma boulevard, then make a u turn and head back onto the onramp to head back on eastbound 37. as we take it back out here live, you can see the traffic heading southbound on 29. the traffic so far has not been so bad, i have to say, more of just an inconvenience for a lot of drivers and in terms of the onramp, at least now we're hearing from caltrans is at 2

this afternoon: live in vallejo, brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. a story you'll see only on 2, ktvu has learned that passengers and emergency responders faced another possible threat after asiana flight 214 crashed at sfo. one source tells ktvu at least 45 pounds of yellow phosphorous was in the cargo bay of the jet. phosphorous can quickly react with oxygen and catch fire at temperatures 10 degrees above room temperature. >> we dealt with an engine fire and developed into what you saw during the incident. good phosphorous if it was there lead to worsening conditions, absolutely, but to my knowledge, we never saw indications of that. >> now, the ntsb sent an e-mail saying the shipment was actually yellow phosphor which is not classified as a hazardous material and they add that they don't know where the chemical was going, who was

sending it or if any of it was actually exposed. police in oakland getting ready for more possible protests this weekend. there was violence and vandalism in downtown oakland hours after the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman case in florida. oakland's acting police chief vows to do everything possible to keep the peace this weekend. next week the oakland city council will consider a proposal to ban the tools of violence from future protests. that ordinance would make it a crime to carry hammers, clubs, wrenches and other potentially destructive items. a shocking admission from a jury member of the jury that acquitted george zimmerman. >> george zimmerman got away with murder. >> coming up for you at 8:45, the reason she's now changing her position. new this morning, police are investigating a crash involving a taxi cab and an suv in san francisco. it happened at about 10:40 last night on gulf and oak streets.

three people were in the cab. one person was in the suv. police say all people involved are expected to survive. >> there is a big clean up ahead for a pizza restaurant in nava doe tahoe after a car slammed through the front door. it happened at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at the pizzeria on south navado boulevard. 60 kids and adults set to attend a benefit dinner fortunately had not arrived for the event. three people in the car did suffer minor injuries. police are looking another driver in attention or possible mechanical problems as the case. event organizers were able to move the fundraiser to a new location. time is 8:35. the same law firm that sued pg&e over the san bruno pipeline disaster will take on the chevron richmond refinery fire. that fire sent toxic smoke into the air in august. 15,000 people sought medical treatment. now the city of richmond has hired a burling game law firm to seek damages from that fire.

chevron says the city's decision to sue doesn't change the company's commitment to economic development in richmond. a former uc davis police officer involved in a pepper spraying incident two years ago is now seeking workers' compensation for psychiatric distress. john pike says he received several threat after being identified as that officer who pepper sprayed protesters on the ground in 2011. pike was fired last year after an investigation. his case is scheduled to be heard in sacramento next month. construction crews may be moving forward with a so called quick fix for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. ktvu news has learned that special materials designed to make sure it can withstand an earthquake will be tested next month. this material will be used after the failure of a few dozen metal rods caused major safety concerns. however, there will be a number

of safety reviews in the weeks ahead. this idea of using the shem's to open the bridge sooner is being vetted. no decisions have been made as to whether or not they can be used that way and no decisions have been made on a new opening date. >> it's still possible they could open during labor day weekend as planned. happening today, gilroy preparing to start a garlic party. the gilroy garlic festival starts in less than 90 minutes from now. ktvu's katie utehs is live among the bulbs and the cloves on gourmet alley. they have been cooking all morning and you have been right there. >> reporter: we are right next to the flames a hundred thousand people are going to come out to gilroy this weekend for the garlic festival, they are going to see lots of people and someone who is eager to try the garlic is queen olivia. tell me how eager are you to chomp into this. >> i'm excited. this is a brand new dish this year. hopefully a new favorite.

a share yesterday. toyota holding onto its title as king of the car makers, the japanese car company sold 49 millions cars this year and down from last year and toyota blames most of the it say on a boycott in china. >> time is 8:45. bringing you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following for you right now. in just a couple minutes, oakland city leaders will hold a news conference right here about the city's growing violent crime problem. it's going to be held in the max well park neighborhood, where a popular dog walker was shot and killed in broad daylight earlier this week. negotiations in that barred labor dispute is set to resume at 9:00 and a couple minutes from now, growing concerns the two sides will not be able to reach a deal before the august 4 august 4th strike deadline. and the breaking news we've been following for you all morning, a woman in santa clara says a stranger attacked her while she was sleeping in her

home this morning. investigators have been at the scene since 4:00 this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega just left the police news conference a couple minutes ago. what did they say. >> they didn't have much to say. they're still staying tight lipped. initially we were told that weapons were allegedly used in this crime and there was forced entry at the apartment complex that's on homestead road, but the police spokesperson told us they are reinterviewing the woman to confirm details. they are still here looking for evidence of the crime. officers were called to the apartment complex on homestead near kiley boulevard at 4:00 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report her roommate had been sexually assaulted. police arrived and said the woman who was in her 20s told police that she woke up and found a strange man hovering over her. officers say that she told them that he put a box cutter to her throat and then after that he assaulted her. detectives said that she only got a vague description of the suspect, so police are not releasing that information. the woman was taken to the

local hospital. a police spokesperson says that while that information was initially released by police, they're still trying to investigate and confirm that a crime happened. >> we tread lightly on all these sexual assault cases. we're going to talk to everybody involved. any witnesses, and then a lot of the evidence going on, we'll take all of those details and put them together. >> reporter: one of the details police told us earlier was that it appeared there was forced entry into the first floor apartment. they thought that the intruder may have entered through a back window and exited through the front door. but as of now, there is no active search for a suspect. if we have any sort of update, we'll give that to you at noon. reporting live from santa clara. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, prosecutors in france have just announced former international head, dominique strauss-kahn

feel like i killed him. >> the juror says shelfs like she let trayvon martin's parents down and struggles with the verdict and the public outcry that follows and also says the jurors couldn't find enough evidence under florida law to convict the neighborhood watch volunteer. time is 8:49. police in santa cruz looking for the vandals that spray painted death threats to police officers, police say the names of several officers were sprayed on the murals at bay view elementary school, along with the threats, and investigators think gang members are behind it. the murals are made by graduating 4th grade classes as part of an annual tradition. there's a fall out banning people from sleeping in their cars in palo alto. critics worried the ordinance might cause some homeless people to migrate and move further south along the peninsula. this morning, nasa is using

a special remote control to test out its reach from space. right now an astronaut on the international space station is controlling a robert at the nasa aims research center in mown vain view. two hours ago, the programs manager joined us live on ktvu talking about the project and what it could mean for the future. >> we're trying to understand how we can enable astronauts to do work far beyond being inside a spacecraft, in particular how we can use remotely operated robots to do work on earth or perhaps in the future on the moon or mars. >> the program's project manager says the tasks will simulate a possible future mission to the moon. and he also talked about how it could be used to help doctors in one city. >> one coast to another. >> fantastic. it's fascinating. 8:51. an industrial accident in

welcome back to mornings on 2. it's 8:54. a metal worker in vallejo is recovering this morning after his leg was caught under a 3000-

pound bundle of tubing. the accident happened at 5 yesterday evening at the valley iron metal company. it took firefighters nearly an hour to secure the metal and free him. he was air lifted to a sacramento area hospital as a precaution and he is reported in good condition. the autopsial safety and health -- occupational safety and health administration could inspect the scene as early as today. a natural gas rig in the gulf of mexico has to be secured after it caught fire earlier this week. the blow out occurred when workers hit an unexpected pocket of gas. now, however, because of natural gas, the incident is expected to have limited environmental impact unlike of course the bp gulf oil spill. time is 8:55. a quick thinking 13-year-old girl helped catch a suspected burglar. she was babysitting her younger brother when she heard a strange noise. police say she looked out a window and saw a man's reflection. >> heard some kind of ransacking in the garage area.

at that point she grabbed her little brother and went to the back bedroom. >> i'm proud of her. i'm proud of her, you know, she took care of her brother. >> the girl also called her mother who called 911. police say they got there about 20 seconds after they were notified. they saw two men leaving the backyard and they arrested 22- year-old quinton braithwaite. a bay area lawmaker is rallying support for a college in san francisco losing students and facing closure. he joined the board of trustees president yesterday and said students should keep enrolling in classes while the school tries to keep its accreditation. it has dropped in enrollment, and says it will lose accreditation if it does not change the way it runs things. the debate over san francisco's health care plan is sparking up again. the group that worked out details of the city's healthy
