coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, everybody, i am brian flores in for tori campbell. we begin with breaking news. you are looking at live pictures of a gas leak that has prompted evacuations of a number of east bay apartment complexes. it was reported at 9:45 in richmond at the intersection of marina bay parkway and regatta boulevard. we are told a contractor there ruptured a gas main. >> ther supposed to check but that didn't happen. >> firefighters went door to door telling people who live at several nearby apartment complexes to evacuate. many left with the clothes on their backs. >> i left my car and luckily i brought my purse and cell phones and keys but i can't go anywhere. >> there is concern about an explosion and san bruno comes to mind and things like that,

so there is definitely a concern. >> an update now on the gas leak, pg&e tells us that crews capped the leak 30 minutes ago. at last check residents were still waiting for the all clear to return to their homes. this afternoon the city council map is calling for a state of emergency after the latest deadly violence. as paul chambers reports respects say enough is enough. >> judy solomon and elisha carradine shot and killed in oakland within the last two weeks. >> this is the worst that i have seen in this neighborhood in 45 years. >> today members of this oakland community are demanding that things change. wednesday afternoon solomon, a beloved pet sitter was shot and killed a few blocks from her home. solo solomon was in the area picking up animals and last week she

women kicked through the door and ran for help. a woman said a intruder broke into her apartment and sexually assaulted her, janine de la vega joins us live from santa clara to explain what they are doing now. >> reporter: good afternoon, police have been canvassing the neighborhood and going door to door talking to neighbors asking them if they heard anything or saw anyone suspicious hanging around near this apartment complex. they are still trying to confirm a crime happened here. police have been focusing their attention on a first floor apartment. police say they received a 911 call at 4:00 a.m. from a woman saying her roommate had been sexually assaulted, officers were told by the woman she woke up to a strange man hovering over her head and she said he held a box cutter to her throat and raped, she was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, a spokesman said they are working to confirm those allegations are

true and taking this seriously. >> we tread lightly on all these sexual assaults cases. we are going to talk to anybody involved and a lot of the evidentiary things going on, we will take all those details and put them together. >> police say there may be signs of a forced entry. investigators say it appears someone may have broken through a rear window then exited from the front door. detectives are collecting evidence to help them piece together what happened. police say the neighborhood has little crime and sexual assaults by strangers are rare. those who live nearby say it is unsettling. >> i have a daughter and she -- you know she is 18 and she comes in you know later at night and now i am a little bit more anxious, want to keep -- make sure my windows and doors are locked so you know there is nobody trying to get into my house. >> police are in the process of reinterviewing the woman and her roommate to get more details. she initially gave such a vague suspect description that police

never released that information. and there is currently no active search for him. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> details are coming to light in the rescue of a woman held by men accused of growing a marijuana operation. they say they grew more than 1000 marijuana plants on their property. court documents say the men forced the girl to help process marijuana, confined her at times in a 4 by two foot box and sexually abused her, the sexual abuse shocked people in lake county. >> one thing but sexual abuse is very bad i mean obviously. that is absolutely wrong. >> the two men face charges of conspiring to manufacture and distribute marijuana and using a minor in illegal drug operations it came after an

investigation that took nearly three months. aman accused of using pepper spray to force his way into a home in fremont remains on the loose. police say the suspect rang the doorbell at a house on porter street and blake howell road yesterday. when the woman opened the door he doused her with pepper spray and then got into a fight with a man in the house and shots were fired. the swat team responded but he escaped. the fame is not hurt. the suspect is a thin 30-year- old latino man with a long bushy ponytail, goatee and tatoos above both eyebrows. construction crews may be moving forward with the quick fix for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. ktvu news has learned special wedge like materials designed to make sure the new bridge will with stand a earthquake will be ready by early next month. this material called shims will be used after the failure of a few dozen metal rods caused major safety concerns. however, there will be a number of safety reviews in the weeks

ahead. >> this idea of using the shims to open the bridge sooner is being vetted but again no decisions have been made as to whether or not the shems can be used that and no decisions made on a new opening date. >> it is still possible though the new bridge could open during the labor day weekend as planned. the next round of across the board government spending cuts could take a heavy toll on the u.s. economy. these latest cuts known as sequestration begin next week, in a new study found they could cost as many as 1.6 million jobs. sequestration effects everything from the military to unemployment benefits. congresswoman michele bachmann is now under a full- blown ethnics investigation in washington, d.c., an attorney for her confirmed in march a congressional panel was looking into financial matters linked to her white house bid. today that probe was extended

the ktvu news at noon, well, a big rig overturned on a freeway on-ramp this morning and leaked oil and fuel on to the road it happened on the southbound on-ramp of highway 29 in vallejo at 4:15 this morning. it remained closed. the driver was not hurt but he was driving too fast. a chase ended with a crash there, two people were injured, they tried to pull over a car before 1:00, the driver took off and crashed near al ham bra avenue, the helicopter took one

victim to a hospital, the other wept by ambulance to highland hospital. no word on their conditions this afternoon. well, it is that time of the year when the smell of garlic is hard to miss in southern santa clara county. katie is there where all those aromatic favorites are being cooked up. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, it is a sensory overload here, it is hot, it is loud and it smells delicious. we have garlic ice cream, garlic calamari and prongs, we have hundreds of thousands of people out here and what i have learned in the short time i have been here is that people cannot get enough garlic. some people attend the gilroy garlic festival annually, like five-year-old lexy hamilton. >> i like them, i always see this every year. >> others have been late to the table. >> we came down for the weekend and this has been on my bucket list for the 35 years.

particular pallette. >> i think everybody should try the garlic ice cream. >> i am a little skeptical. what is it like? it is garlic. but it is free. >> i tried the garlic ice cream, it tastes like garlic, pretty tasty if you are into trying new things head on down to gilroy, the gates open at 10:00 a.m. and the festival goes through sunday, rather, excuse me, they will go through 1105 gallon buckets of missensed garlic, that is how much it takes to put this festival on, so brian i say bring the family on down, a good time in gilroy. >> and i expect garlic ice cream to be back here at the station. katie thank you so much. the lincoln memorial is expected to re-open later today after someone splattered green paint on the base of the statute in washington, d.c. the vandalism occurred overnight. u.s. park police say the vandals did not write anything but got green paint on the

floor and at the base near his foot. crews spent the morning cleaning up the mess. >> it is not permanent. it can be cleaned. we have very good historic preservation crews right up there now cleaning it as we speak. >> a suspect has not been identified either. and a motive remains unclear. local employees are preparing for the possibility of more protests this weekend. there was violence and vandalism in downtown oakland hours after the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman case in florida. and oakland's acting police chief is vowing to do everything possible to keep the peace this weekend. next week the oakland city council will consider banning the so-called tools of violence and make it a crime to carry hammers, clubs, wrenches and other items during demonstrations. now to our continuing coverage of the bart negotiations, we are just days

away from a strike. the talks started up again but there are growing concerns they won't be able to reach a deal in time. bay area transit leaders are looking into hiring charter buses for commuters if there is another strike on august 4th but it would take 8000 busses to carey the passengers bart normally carriesy each day, new bike racks aimed at drawing their attention. they are dined to look like bikes just like that and along part of the boulevard there. near is no bike lane there, forcing bikes and cars to share the same roadway. the owner of the bike shop we spoke with says the design is no accident. >> the thought was if they look like bicycles it would help raise awareness of cycling downtown and help cars when they come downtown to think about bicycles and keeping out for cyclists. >> he also tells us he hopes to take the members of the city council on a bike ride in the fall so they can appreciated how dangerous the loop area is
