congestion. a suspicious package this afternoon along the bay bridge fouled up friday's commute from the get go. it's about to get worse. justin timberlake and jay z are co-headlining a candlestick concert at 7:30. that's about the time the giants-cubs game kicks off. dozens of cyclists are expected to tie up city streets. that prompted brenda taylor to come early to watch the giants. >> it's going to be busy, crowded, cars everywhere. >> reporter: law enforcement will have extra units out patrolling 101 for duis. >> we're asking people to be patient, allow some extra time for travel to all these events that are occurring in san francisco. use public transportation if you can. >> reporter: the traffic tie ups could continue tomorrow. >> you might see a couple of people dressed as apes. >> reporter: the sequel to rise of the planet of the apes is being shot in north beach starting saturday morning. the no parking signs are

and came into the shop. he was flashing his gun around. we all left the shop. we was scared. >> reporter: he and other business owners have started informal meetings to see if they could hire private security, patrol the area and make everyone feel safer. >> make a lot of -- big difference. >> reporter: gallo anticipates introducing a request to declare a state of emergency in early september. we have reached out to the mayor's office, but so far we have not heard back. live in oakland, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. an oakland grandfather spoke out about an attack on his family, one caught on camera. this surveillance video was shot outside a liquor store two months ago. jose ortiz says his son and grandson had parked outside the store, suddenly someone ran out of the store and opened fire on their car while the boy was still inside. no one was hurt. but ortiz says he is furious. >> this guy came out shooting.

he pull six bullet holes into my son's car. windshields to windows to door with my grandson in the backseat. >> ortiz says he has turned this surveillance video over to oakland police and he hopes someone recognizes the gunmen. police in the south bay are investigating a braise and tack on a woman at an apartment complex. -- >> reporter: santa clara police went door to door along homestead road and teams of officers searched nearby creeks looking for a man who may have sexually assaulted a woman at an apartment complex this that neighborhood. according to police, a woman claims a man broke in through a window just before 4:00 a.m. came into her bedroom and sexually assaulted her. detectives are trying to determine if a weapon was used.

station and say they hope to be able to put together a composite sketch some time in the next few days. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. things are getting back to normal after a gas leak at the intersection of ragata boulevard this morning. the leak led to the evacuation of several apartment lexes. a fire chief blamed a construction crew. >> they are supposed to check, absolutely, before they start digging. unfortunately that didn't happen in this situation. >> took a little over two hours to cap the line. repairs were going on all afternoon. contra costa county officials are blaming faulty emergency alerts wednesday on a company they contract with. the leak forced evacuations in an area a few blocks around the leak. but alerts went tout several unaffected areas of the county, telling people to evacuate immediately. a sheriffs spokesman says a technical error by the contractor sent the message out to the county's wireless alert

system. we have new video this evening of a grass fire in sonoma county. the flames broke out about 1:45 hah off lakeville highway. it's burned about 80 acres so far. it's about 50% contained at this hour. no reports of damage to structures. next month a bay area soldier will receive the nation's highest military award. staff sergeant ty carter is being recognized for his courage during a deadly assault on a u.s. outpost in afghanistan. insurgents shot this video of the devastating taliban attack in october of 2009. he was just one of 53 soldiers who defended combat outpost from almost 400 insur jets. 8 american soldiers died that day. sergeant carter risked his

life. staff sergeant clint romajay already received a medal of honor. >> they heard comrades were pinned down. so clint and his team unloaded everything they had into the enemy positions and with that covered three wounded meshes made their escape. >> the fifth living recipient to be awarded the medal of honor for actions in iraq or afghanistan. he will receive his medal from the president at the white house on august 26th. more details now, the medal of honor is the nation's highest award for valor and combat. since then more than 3400 med also of honor have been awarded to all members of the armed forces including the coast guard. now to our continuing coverage of the looming possibility of another bart strike. there are now 9 days left before the union's 30 day contract extension is set to expire on august 4th.

police in contra costa county are investigating a hate crime apparently targeting a family. new at 5 tonight, john sasaki joins us live from brentwood where he tells us officers have recovered evidence that could help solve the crime. john. >> reporter: this neighborhood is in shock because of what happened here yesterday. spray painted graffiti on this house has since been painted over. now the graffiti that someone left on the garage door and the driveway at this lexington court home was racist and intimidating. it included the n-word, monkeys and kkk. the african-american family who lives here was not at home at time. also at nearby walmart -- a bench was hit with a swastika. police are going hard after the people who committed this crime and they recovered good

evidence at the scene. >> this is a serious crime. this isn't just kids out spray painting and vandalizing. when we catch these people, we'll work and seek felony charges. >> reporter: police are asking anybody with any information about this case to please give them a call. live in brentwood, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. two lake county men now face federal charges of growing marijuana for sale and holding a 15-year-old girl captive. federal prosecutors have charged ryan balletto and patrick pearmain with conspiring to grow and distribute marijuana and using a minor in an illegal drug operation. court documents say the men forced the girl to help process marijuana, confined her at times in a box and sexually abused her. >> one thing, but sexual abuse is very bad. i mean, obviously. that's absolutely wrong. >> authorities began investigating the men early this year and rescued the girl

in late april. months of investigation followed and led to the federal charges. san diego's mayor apologized again today to women who have accused him of sexual harassment p.m.. he said he plans to undergo intensive therapy starting august 5th. he said his behavior was wrong and he apologized to voters and to his staff. the chairwoman of the democratic national committee called on filner to resign. but he has resisted those calls. one of silicone valleys most powerful ceo's is plunging into the debate about immigration reform. he's expected to give a speech next month. the director calls zuckerberg's speech a dramatic move. it's a departure. usually concentrates on the need for high-tech visas.

spray for mosquitoes in an east san jose neighborhood. the spraying will take place east of interstate 680, south of landus avenue. it's all scheduled to start at 11:00 tonight. the spraying comes after mosquitoes were found carrying the west nile virus. this is the first time they've been found in that area. brewers are anticipating the harvest of wine grapes. picking could start as early as next week. wine makers say field workers may get some overtime when the grapes are ready. >> it could be a compacted harvest which means the grapes will come around the same time, but when they start coming in they'll really start coming in. >> of course when to pick is a crucial decision. more details on grace closer to home. napa valley growers are looking guard to an early harvest. hint at higher prices for the valley's famous.

the house ethics committee has extended an investigation of republican michele bachmann. she faces allegations of making improper payments to a campaign aide. bachmann denies any wrong doing but has said she will not seek reelection to the house. one of america's most beloved icons came under attack. vandals sprayed paint on the lincoln memorial. >> it's obviously disappointing that someone would disrespect something that's for the public that much that they would degrade it and deface it. >> early this morning a

security guard discovered green paint splattered on the bottom statue. preservation crews spent the day using nontoxic cleaning products to remove that paint. tourists were able to climb the stairs. the good news is the damage is not permanent. >> we feel very, very fortunate. this is such a national treasure that permanent damage would have been devastating. and so we're -- we're very glad we're going to be able to restore it to the way it was. >> the lincoln memorial was dedicated in 1922 to the nation's 16th president. the entire monument should open tomorrow. big rig overturned on a freeway onramp this morning, slowing commuters in vallejo. the accident happened on the southbound onramp of highway 29 to eastbound 37 around 4:15

this morning. that onramp remained closed most of the morning. the driver suffered minor injuries. the highway patrol says alcohol was not a factor in the accident, but it appears the driver was speeding. a crash on the bay bridge shut down two westbound lanes for about 40 minutes during the height of the morning commute. the accident backed up traffic. it all started with a knock at the door. >> all of a sudden they heard gunshots. they saw the woman running out of her house screaming. >> a bay area family attacked inside their own home. the search is on for the man who police say had a plan. o.j. simpson pleads for less prison time. why the former football star says he should be released early. a life sentence plus 1000 years. man accused of holding three women captive for years pleads guilty. why his victims say they are happy a plea deal was reached. look at 'em.

it was a violent life or death struggle between an intruder and south bay family. tonight police are still looking for the man who forced his way into a freemont home. the family had no warning and no idea what hit them after the

man forced his way inside and the mother made a frantic last ditch effort to save her children. the attack happened yesterday evening. mike mibach joins us live where neighbors say they heard obvious signs of trouble. >> reporter: they did catch on quickly. we did learn within the last couple hours this was no random attack. this family was targeted. they did not say specifically why. the story starting with the knock on the door and shots fired. it all taking place in this neighborhood where residents say is usually quiet. a place why everyone keep answer eye out for each other. freemont officers armed own on the hunt. >> the police toldtous get inside and close the doors and windows. >> we heard sirens. >> reporter: se bee that. the place,. >> we're looked in our homes for hours. >> we heard a girl screaming.

>> reporter: heidi says it came from this house. inside police say were a husband, wife and two children. detectives say it was here where a man knocked on the door, pepper sprayed the wife who answered, entered the home and then gunfire. her neighbors were right out in the front yard. >> all of a sudden they heard gunshots. they saw the woman running out screaming. >> reporter: a police spokeswoman said in a statement the wife got one child out and realized her daughter was still inside. she went back in to get her daughter, who was under the bed. >> we saw them walking with ice packs on their faces, little did we know they got sprayed with pepper spray. >> reporter: fremont police say no one was shot and the intruder fired the weapon. it appears he escaped through a door in the back of the home. skinny, long bushy hair, possibly a pony tail with tattoos above both eyebrows.

live tonight in fremont, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. we have an update on a story about a fraud investigation into alcohol and drug treatment centers in california. state officials temporarily suspended 11 more treatment centers. last week treatment facilities were suspended. investigators have not released the names of the centers. they're suspected for billing for services that were not provided or were medically unnecessary. the family of a missing teenager announced a $5000 reward for information on his whereabouts. 19-year-old sean seedy was last seen in san francisco on may 21st. the teen has a traumatic brain injury and is considered at risk because he's without his medication. family members believe he is likely confused and disoriented. if you can locate him, you're asked to call san francisco police. child care centers in contra costa county are being warned in an upsurge in cases

of whooping cough. also called pertussis disease. babies are at the greatest risk. hospitalization, even death. they recommend that infants, pregnant women and their families and care givers receive vaccinations. a preliminary injunction preventing the city of santa clara from spending money tied to redevelopment agencies. santa clara county sued the city to prevent it from spending $300 million in funds. the judge said the money should be placed into a reserve account until the legal dispute is resolved. the u.s. will not seek the death penalty against nsa leaker edward snowden. holder made the assurance in a letter to russia's minister of justice, adding the u.s. would issue snowden a passport so he could travel back to the u.s. immediately. snowden is seeking asylum to

avoid facing criminal charges for disclosing classified information. the u.s. government is reportedly demanding that several major internet companies turn over users stored pass words. cnet is reporting that some of the companies acknowledged receiving the request but have refused to turn over the pass words. experts say having a stored password even in encrypted form could grant access to a person's information or enable someone to log in and impersonate them. a new report finds eliminating the drastic cuts known as sequestration will boost the economy. dropping the cuts will put 900,000 people back to work. the gross domestic product would go up 0.7%. the cbo added taking back the cuts would add to the nation's debt. >> this man is going to prison for the rest of his life. is never coming out exhibit nailed in a box. >> i knew i was going to get

pretty much the book thrown at me. a guilty plea from a violent sexual predator today spares his victims from appearing in court. ariel castro pleaded guilty to kidnapping, rape and murder in the abduction of three young women. castro avoids the death penalty but gets life plus 1000 years in prison. >> reporter: with this guilty plea today. >> because of the plea deal i will plead guilty. >> reporter: the cleveland kidnapper cemented his fate. prison for life. >> my addiction to pornography and my sexual problem has really taken a toll on my mind. >> reporter: the deal gives him a life sentence plus 1000 years and takes the threat of the death penalty off the table. there will be no possibility of parole, a reality castro today seemed to say he had accepted. >> again i do understand that. i knew that when i spoke to the

fbi agent when i first got arrested. >> reporter: this means this horrifying case will now never go to trial. that was welcome news to the three victims, michelle knight, amanda berry and gina dejesus. the women hoped the deal would be soak struck so they could avoid testifying against the man who held them for so long. >> i'm here. i'm free now. >> reporter: in a statement today, the women called this a resolution and say they are quote, satisfied and relieved. additional relief, news the house where castro lived and where they were held will soon be demolished. more details now. at today's hearerring the judge declared ariel castro guilty of more than 900 counts. he'll be formally sentenced august 1st. the judge said castro will be allowed to speak on his own

the driver of the high speed spanish train that crashed has now been arrest. you can see the injured driver being led away from the train on wednesday. police say they suspect him of reckless driving and speeding. investigators say they hope the train's black box which was recovered today will shed more light on the tragedy. 78 people died and dozens more were hurt when the train derailed. o.j. simpson told parole officers he regrets the robbery of his own memorabilia. >> i would give it all back to these guys. they can have it all to get these last five years back. >> simpson appeared yesterday before the nevada parole board. he said he's been a model prisoner during the past five years and he's missed many family events. he is serving for armed robbery. military veterans received a mixed ruling in a lawsuit

over decades of secret government testing. a federal judge in oakland ruled veterans must be given up to date information on the effects of chemical exposure. they are not entitled to government paid healthcare outside the department of veterans affairs. a cyber attack has reissued more than 18,000 debit cards. redwood credit union says customer financial information may have been stolen in sophisticated crimes. the credit union says it has confirmed at least 200 fraud- related cases from the stores. investigators believe criminals may have gained access to customer accounts by altering electronic devices at self- checkout lanes. food from other countries will be held to higher safety standards. how the fda plans to better protect americans from imported seafood, fruits and vegetables. a final resting place. people can't be buried in san francisco any more, but soon animals can. the fog is increasing in

comes from other countries, half of america's fresh fruit is imported. 20% of our vegetables are shipped to us. american consumers could have new assurances those foods are safe and free from con contamination. >> reporter: the federal government inspects only about 2% of the food coming into the united states. that surprised santa cruz resident pohly who tells me she's petrified to grocery shop now. her husband is sick from the salmonella outbreak. >> we were drinking smoothies every morning with kale and spinach and every great thing under the sun and i was poi song my family every day for two weeks. >> reporter: now the food and drug administration is proposing new rules that would require they are following american food safety standards.

>> the rules that we're presenting really will enable us to hold food producers and manufacturers and importers more accountable. >> reporter: 15% of foods americans are eating right now comes from overseas. that includes 20% of vegetables and 50% of fruit. the rules are a part of the landmark food safety modernization act. since it was signed into law, 8 of the 19-foot outbreaks have been linked to imports. food safety advocates say the rules are a step in the right direction but worry it'll take a while to finalize the rules. longer it takes, the more people are going to get sick from situations that are preventable. the rules will be open for public comment for four months. in washington, jacqueline fell, ktvu channel 2 news. new regulations are out this week that would add emissions from offroad

vehicles. approved the rules for rov's sold in california. a lower cap on leaking fumes. whether the vehicles are on the road or in storage. the rule will take effect in 2018. protesters plan to gather tomorrow afternoon in hopes of saving it from being sold. this comes after the postal service turned down and says it plans to sell that building. similar protests are planned across the country. the protest is set for 1:00 tomorrow afternoon, bicycle racks of a different kind are meant to get the attention of drivers. the new racks are shaped just like a bicycle. kind of cool. the roads downtown has no like bike lane. he hopes the racks will keep drivers aware of cyclists. if you're out riding your bike, nice day. let's see what the weekend is
