. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2, saturday, july 27th. i'm mike mibach. >> good morning. i'm maureen naylor. claudine is off this morning. rosemary is here and you have a cooling for us! >> yes, a cooling into the weekend. this morning, starting out similar to yesterday. gray skies well into the valleys this morning. temperatures similar to how we started yesterday. patches of drizzle reported along the coast and around the bay. for the afternoon, we'll turn mostly sunny, but we will be a tad cooler, only subtle changes in the forecast for the next few days. i'll show you what you can expect for your neighborhood, coming up. law enforcement in the east bay are preparing for more violent demonstrations. oakland police are trying to avoid a repeat of recent vandalism after george zimmerman was found not guilty. the department says it is aware of several demonstrations planned for today, including a rally for trayvon martin scheduled for this afternoon. officers say they are prepared if protests start to get out of

hand. oakland leaders and community members say they have had enough of the violence in their city. council member noelle gaya wants the city to declare a state of emergency, making it easier to receive financial aid from the county, state and federal government. the announcement comes just days after an 8-year-old girl and a 66-year-old dog sitter were shot and killed in separate incidents. >> i don't walk around the neighborhood anymore. i'm kind of scared to walk by myself, because you know, who knows? somebody is going to do the same thing to you. >> residents in the maxwell park neighborhood are discussing hiring private security. a block party is scheduled for later this morning near the home of judy solomon. the dog sitter was gunned down on tuesday. people who say they are against the closure of the berkeley main post office will be making their voices heard today. they plan to protest outside the historic post office on austin way at 1:00. the postal service is moving forward with plans to sell the building to a private buyer. the agency says it is losing

millions of dollars and has to close postal facilities across the country. negotiations in the bart labor dispute are scheduled to resume tuesday, but one side has already made a move. ktvu's alex savidge is live in san francisco this morning with why bart's lead negotiator is suspected of having a conflict of interest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. two employee units are calling for bart's lead negotiator to be removed from the talks, claiming he has a financial interest in another strike taking place. thomas hawk is bart's chief negotiator and also vice president of viola transportation. hawk was compensated by viola during the strike, but a bart spokesman told us he was paid just $500 in administrative fees. he calls that a minor amount of money, hardly enough to create

a conflict of interest. but union representatives disagree. they say it's clear that hawk stands to benefit financially if negotiations fall apart once again. >> we're calling upon the board of directors to immediately investigate the conflict of interest and to even order him to be removed from negotiations. >> reporter: right now, hock is in the middle of a 10-day vacation, preplanned. but he is expected to return on tuesday to continue negotiations with the two bart employee unions. by the way, the deadline to reach a deal and avoid another bart strike is august 4th. meantime, a word of caution here if you're planning to ride bart later this morning. we are getting word from bart there is a 15-minute delay on all trains due to track maintenance this morning. be aware of that. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. president obama is marking the 60th anniversary of the end

to the korean war today. here is a live picture from the national mall in washington, where you can see the president approaching. he is set to deliver remarks in a commemorative ceremony here at the korean war veterans memorial. now, we plan to bring you part of the speech. we've seen some of our nation's military gathering. this will be a somber ceremony. we'll come back as soon as mr. obama takes the podium and watch part of his speech. a dedication ceremony for the future site of the memorial is planned for 10:00 this morning. the memorial will be built near lincoln boulevard and sheridan avenue, near the entrance to the national cemetery. the dedication, just as president obama's remarks this morning are planned to set the mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the korean war. there is a renewed search this morning for a missing 21- month-old girl in oakland. the family of daphne webb plans to handout flyers at the corner of mountain boulevard and keller avenue. they will also canvas her

mother's neighborhood. daphne's father reported the girl missing july 10th. other family members say they have not seen her since late june. new this morning, a female has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit in connection to the death of a saratoga teenager, audrey pott. she is the 15-year-old high school student who committed suicide last september. her family says she became distraught after three teenage boys allegedly assaulted her at a party, in which she got drunk and passed out. cell phone photos circulated through her school. pott's family claims the female defendant tried to cover up the incident, including hiding her role in what happened. an 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with a crash last month that killed a bicyclist last month. cody hall is being charged in jail on charges of manslaughter and reckless driving. the accident killed a dublin woman and injured her husband. police arrested hall's father, who they say is a convicted felon, while serving a search warrant earlier this month,

police found two illegal assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition in aaron hall's home. california officials say violent crime in the state is up. however, crime rates remain at historic lows. the annual crime in california report tallied 160,000 violent crimes last year. that's about a 3% increase from 2011, when there weremore than 155,000 violent crimes reported. the state points out the figures are half of what crime levels were at 20 years ago. a new study has revealed fremont is the second safest city in the u.s. irvine, california came in at first. the numbers are based on the fbi's latest crime data for cities with populations more than 200,000 people. fremont is one of six california cities on the list, but is the only one in the bay area. the website business insider reports fremont has a murder rate 81% below the national average. lot going on today in the bay area, from baseball to america's cup, even the berkeley kite festival. let's turn now to rosemary to a

check on the saturday weather. >> saturday afternoon will be splendid for most of us. remaining cool along the coastline, but this morning, a lot of gray out there all the way into the valleys. temperatures on the cool side. we have a pretty robust onshore breeze through the delta. giving you a live look first at mount diablo, take a look. we have low clouds spilling in over and across parts of the east bay this morning. and that marine air is going to have an influence on your afternoon highs. again, we have a cooling trend for your weekend. giving you a view of how widespread the gray is, from santa rosa down into san jose, you get into the east bay, just east of awritten today, beginning to see the clearing there. areas like lafayette, danville, concord, livermore, mostly sunny this morning, although you can see a patch on the outside. for the afternoon, we will be mostly sunny. low clouds begin burning away by 10:30, 11:00. along the coastline, we will remain mostly cloudy and cool once again. that onshore breeze really

blowing through fairfield, 24 miles per hour. gusting to near 40 at times. so again, that onshore breeze, cool pacific air, drifting through and cooling areas down all the way into the central valley for today. here at home, 56 degrees outside your door in concord. 55 in napa. 54 in san francisco. low 60s mountain view. these numbers, a lot like where we started yesterday. getting outdoors this morning maybe for a run or hike, it's going to feel pretty good out there, because it's cool. if you're out there for just a morning stroll, it could be a little chilly, even a little patchy drizzle out there in parts around the bay area, as well as the coastline. this ridge of high pressure has shifted east a little bit, giving us a bit of a break. if you are going to the sierra, expect thunderstorms this afternoon over parts of the sierra crest. so the higher elevations for today and possibly for tomorrow, but this is the system here that is helping to bring the cooler air in place, keep that low cloud deck in place, and bring us the onshore breeze throughout the afternoon. so the seabreeze will be picking up later today.

welcome back. a live look at the bay this morning, with low clouds and enhanced onshore breeze moving through your area. . a gunman in south florida killed six people before being shot to death by s.w.a.t. teams early this morning. the hours-long stand-off started last night in the town of hialeah, just a few miles north of miami. s.w.a.t. teams say they rescued two hostages after storming the building. police are still investigating the motive for the hostage situation and identifying the victims. we are also following developing news in egypt, where close to 40 people have been killed in overnight clashes between protesters and police. those clashes come one day after hundreds of thousands of people took part in rallies across egypt, ud

demonstration in cairo's tahrir square. witnesses say police used tear gas to stop protesters from approaching a bridge in cairo, then fired on demonstrators. the muslim brotherhood says as many as 70 people have been killed. the operator of the bullet train that derailed in spain is now being held on suspicion of negligent homicide. wednesday's derailment killed at least 78 people. authorities will charge him with reckless homicide. spain's interior minister says evidence shows he was at fault. investigators are studying the train's data recorder to determine if the train was going too fast when it hit a curve on the tracks. u.s. army soldier from antioch is to be awarded the nation's highest military award next month. staff sergeant kai carter distinguished himself in one of the costliest battles in the afghan war. jake tapper has his story of bravery. >> reporter: it was a devastating taliban attack, captured in this insurgent-made

this humvee. >> had no more ammo left, getting hit from every which way. >> reporter: sergeant josh heart led two other soldiers to try and provide cover for their trapped comrades with their own humvee. it was a suicide mission. >> heart came across the net and said, you know, got -- rpg pointed right at me. that was the last we heard from heart. >> reporter: bad went to worse. rounds began penetrating the humvee. the enemy was now inside the base. the five men trapped inside decided they needed to get out of there. three tried to make a run for it, while carter and sergeant brad larson provided cover, but enemy fire killed sergeant justin gallegos as he tried to help specialist stephan mace, badly wounded. mace was left lying, trapped in open ground. carter sprung into action, rescuing mace, bringing him back to the humvee. mace ultimately would not survive, but carter's bravery among the brave, now deserving

the medal of honor. >> according to the medal of honor society, the nation's highest military honor has been awarded to more than 3400 people since 1863. this morning, two types of drones have been approved. the scan eagle will be used to track migrating whales. and the puma will be used in response to oil spills. drone use has previously been limited to government and other agencies. the air force is facing a shortage of fighter pilots. the military branch has created a retention program to keep the pilots it does have from leaving. the air force says it will be short 700 fighter pilots during the next decade. officials say pilots will receive $25,000 for every year they stay in. that offer goes up to nine years and $225,000. the air force says some reasons for the shortage include commercial airlines offering

higher salaries and fighter pilot fatigue after years of war in iraq and afghanistan. a task force has been created to raise awareness about valley fever. the potentially deadly disease can be contracted by breathing in fungus-laced spores from dust. it has hit central california especially hard in the last three years. recently, the state transferred 2600 inmates, particularly vulnerable to the fungus to other prisons. 14 lawmakers from california, arizona, and texas will comprise the congressional valley fever task force. the cost of building a new jail in san mateo county could double, if the county cannot collect state funds. the county is now looking at issuing bonds for at least half the cost of the new $165 million jail. the state has already rejected the county's request for $100 million in funds for jail construction. officials say the costs will increase due to interest and funds spent issuing the bonds. in washington, dc, u.s. park police this morning are trying to identify the person

who vandalized the lincoln memorial. police say late thursday night, early friday morning, someone put green paint on the statue, its pedestal, and the floor. the paint was discovered yesterday and the monument was closed while workers cleaned up the paints. in response to the recent vandal imp, the national parks foundation is asking people to donate to the national park service cleanup efforts. they say vandalism is a common occurrence among the 400 national parks across the country. some big names in music rocked candlestick park last night. ♪ ♪ >> mixed emotions for concert goers, leading up to the demolition of the stick and the one thing fans will definitely not miss. >> a cooldown is spilling into the bay area for the weekend. i'll have a look at temperatures, coming up. ♪

avoiding vitamin b supplement that could contain steroids, sometimes used illegally by body builders. neither ingredient is listed on the product's labeling. the fda says users have reported fatigue, pain, and thyroid problems. well, a free smooth thee give-away at jamba juice today. participating stores throughout the bay area plan to give three 9 1/2-ounce smoothies to children ages 8 and younger. the deal is from 11:00 to 4:00 today. jamba juice says children must be present to get that free treat. it is part of jamba kids day to promote good nutrition. pepsi's parent company is announcing it will no longer label its naked juices as all- natural. this comes after a lawsuit revealing the drink's actual components. what the company has claimed to be a boost of vitamins is, according to the lawsuit, a combination of synthetic ingredients. "usa today" reports the company

is paying $9 million to settle the lawsuit. the fda says it does not have a clear definition of what constitutes a natural product. quite an unusual theft in the bay area. cat stolen right out of an owner's locked car. how this surveillance video may help catch the cat napper. >> and first, it was delayed. now, when we could find out the new opening date for the new span of the bay bridge. >> and a new setback in the ongoing negotiations to avoid another bart strike. we'll tell you why the employee unions are accusing bart's lead negotiate of a conflict of interest.

. bay area commuters preparing for the possibility of another jam-packed bart, as employees go back on strike. >> there is a new twist in the ongoing labor dispute. unions are now demanding bart get rid of its lead negotiator. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: well, good morning. the employee unions are crying foul here. they say this is a clear conflict of interest and they want bart's chief negotiator to be removed from the ongoing talks. they say because he has a financial interest in another strike taking place. thomas hock is his name, bart's lead negotiator. and he is also the vice

president of viola transportation. now, during the bart strike that happened earlier this month, viola was contracted to provide some of the shuttle buses for commuters to get around without the trains running. the unions yesterday providing ktvu with copies of invoices. hock was compensated by viola during the strike, but a bart spokesman told us he was paid just $500 in administrative fees. he says that's a minor amount, hardly enough to create a conflict of interest, but union representatives dispute that and they say hock stands to benefit financially if negotiations fall apart once again. >> concerned about these allegations. we do expect the board of directors to investigate. >> reporter: now, hock has been on a 10-day vacation, but he is expected to return and continue negotiations with the two bart employee unions this tuesday. that's when things will resume. the deadline to reach a deal and avoid another bart strike here in the bay area is august

4th. also, word here this morning for anyone planning to take part, we are being told there is a system-wide delay of about 15 minutes or so and this is due to track maintenance going on this morning. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. bart parking fees are set to increase at two oakland stations in a couple of days. a 50-cent increase will go into effect on monday at the macarthur and west oak stations. daily fiat macarthur will be $1.50. west oakland will be $5.50. vallejo will begin charging paid parking on thursday, august 1st in all ferry parking areas. that includes the downtown parking garage, which opened last year. it will cost $5 a day to park your car there. a monthly pass will cost $20. people will be on hand thursday to help drivers navigate the new parking fee machines. this morning, we are learning more about the suspicious device that shut down the bay bridge during the afternoon commute. officials say the device turned

out to be a gray pipe that did not pose a threat. a passer-by spotted the object near the trevor island off ramp and called 911. the bomb squad responded, shutting down all lanes of the bridge. >> it was something that looked very suspiciously like an explosive device. it was a very suspicious item. a gray cylinder. it looked, looked very suspicious. >> the closure caused traffic to back up for miles. the commute was especially sluggish because of the giants and a's ball games and the jay- z and justin timberlake concert at candlestick park. next week, we'll know about the dependability of the bolts for the bay bridge. engineers will test the bolts under extreme conditions to examine how they hold up to sea water and other stresses. the bolts will be bathed in saltwater to age them and then pressured with a force equal to 10 semi trucks. >> so this is essentially an outdoor testing lab. this is for a particular test called a stress corrosion test. and this test will tell us how

long the bolts on the bridge will last under tension in a marine environment. >> while some engineers say corrosion caused previous bolts to fail, further testing has found no problems. officials may decide by the middle of next month when the new eastern span will open. the contra costa times reports outside experts will discuss whether installing a temporary fix could allow the bridge to open before contractors finish repairs to all the faulty bolts. the span was scheduled to open labor day weekend, but an oversite committee pushed back the date due to safety concerns. meantime, the state has canceled a $5 million celebration to mark the opening. happening now, live back to the nation's capitol, president obama is marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the korean war. currently, you see this live picture from the national mall in washington, where military performed the national anthem a few moments ago. we do expect the president to make remarks in a few minutes,

park. >> we all look out for each other. we have homeowners associations. it's sad. >> brentwood police calls this a serious crime. they say they recovered strong evidence at both scenes and will push for felony charges if they catch those responsible for the graffiti. a homeless man accused of beating a man to death with a bat at a milpitas mall is scheduled to appear in court on monday. prosecutors say the man hit the victim with a bat 11 times at a sporting goods store last month. police say they have not revealed the relationship between the two men. we're learning more this morning about the death of an infant in a marysville hotel room. the 11-day-old baby was found wednesday in a room at the rio end motel. deputies say the child was surrounded by drug paraphernalia, including syringes, needles, baggies and scales.

>> standoffish from the baby. the baby was at the end of the bed. the mom was at the front of the bed where the pillows would be, just, like, why does this keep happening? why me? why me? >> a 5-year-old boy was also apparently staying in the room. the mother of the children has been arrested on felony child endangerment charges. supporters of expanding ace train service to central california are hoping a sales tax increase will provide funding. voters could be asked to approve a half percent increase in sales tax next year. officials hope to start service to modesto by 2018 and extend service to turlock and merced by 2022. drivers in contra costa county should expect delays on marsh creek road. crews with the water district will be putting in pipelines along the stretch between clayton regency mobile home park and royal oaks drive. the project could take three months to complete. most of the work will be sunday through thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., but at times, crews could be working from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. time is now 7:37. depending on when you ask, it was pretty warm the last few

police in san francisco are using surveillance video to try to catch a cat thief. it happened thursday night at the corner of polk and broadway. someone smashed through a car window to steal a 12-year-old cat named roxy. police say pet nappings in the city are not unheard of, but cat nappings are a rare occurrence. yesterday, owner caroline adamson drove all over the city looking for her 8-pound feline. >> i really feel, you know, like i'm her mother and i'm supposed to keep her safe and i didn't. it's a horrible feeling. >> the police department says they plan on posting the surveillance video online. adamson says she will pay a $500 reward to anyone who can safely return her cat. no questions asked. san francisco zoo is inviting the public to watch its baby penguins waddle to their new home for the first time. traditionally, the march of the penguins is a zoo members-only event. this is the first year the public has been invited. five young penguins will be joining the rest of their colony at penguin island. the zoo says the exhibit has

been one of the biggest attractions since it started in 1984. all five penguins hatched in early may. meanwhile, the oakland zoo is asking visitors to donate fresh produce to help feed the animals. they are asking for apples, kiwis, carrots and other fruits and vegetables. doors will be opening early today at 9:00 a.m. the first 250 guests will receive a golden ticket to spread produce in the elephant exhibit. each person who donates will receive a ticket for a free ride. well, it has not been done by any republican committee. that is until now. the bay area gop group that just made history by becoming the first in the u.s. to take one action. >> and we're learning more about san jose state's plans to suspend a highly promoted pilot program. what may have contributed to the high failure rate among students taking classes online. >> and let's give you another live look outside. there is the san mateo bridge, all 7 miles of it. both directions, 92 looking great on this saturday morning.

to close guantanamo. there are 160 detainees. 60 are on a hunger strike. rallies are planned in support of a controversial soldier in the bay area. today's an international day of action for manning. supporters will be demonstrating at powell and market streets in san francisco and the berkeley main post office, among other places. the former army intelligence analyst has admitted to sending classified information to wikileaks. he faces up to life in prison. we're learning more about what may have contributed to the high failure rate for san jose experiment for online learning. the los angeles times reports half of the students enrolled in the online pilot program had already failed the courses once. the other half were students from underprivileged oakland high school. the school suspended its online program for the fall semester, after half the students enrolled had failed their classes. a new ordinance that will limit donation boxes in alameda county goes into effect next

plague. public health officials in los angeles closed the camps in the angeles national forest after a ground squirrel tested positive this week. officials are also testing for the presence of the plague at big bear lake, lake arrowhead and running springs in the san bernardino mountains. >> i could have gone to vegas, but, no, i chose the campground, only to be run out by the plague! >> officials say infected fleas carry the plague bacteria. bubonic plague has been a concern in northern california. a chip monk tested positive for the plague last year. one of the oldest bisons roaming golden gate park in san francisco has died. the 30-year-old giant had to be put down yesterday. veterinarians say her health had been declining since wednesday. bison typically have a life expectancy of 25 years. the san francisco zoo's chief of veterinary services says the bison's longevity can be attributed to the excellent care provided by staff. eight bison now remain in the park. 7:55. we're coming up on the end of

a tad cooler for the afternoon and subtle changes in store in the extended forecast. so how long this cooling trend is going to continue and your numbers expected for today, coming up. negotiations in the bart labor dispute are scheduled to resume on tuesday. but one side has already made a move. ktvu's alex savidge is live in san francisco with why bart's lead negotiator is being accused of having a conflict of interest. >> reporter: the two unions representing bart employees says the lead negotiator has an interest in another strike taking place. the two unions are calling on the lead negotiator to be removed from the ongoing talks. we're talking about thomas hock. he's the chief negotiator for bart, also the vice president of viola transportation. now, during the bart strike that happened earlier this month, viola was contracted to provide some of the shuttle buses that commuters use to get around, because the trains were out of service. the unions provided ktvu with

copies of those invoices. now, hock was compensated by viola during the strike, but a spokesman for bart told us he was paid just $500 in administrative fees. he says that was a minor amount of money, hardly enough to create a conflict of interest, but union representatives disagree and they say that hock stands to benefit financially, if negotiations fall apart and bart workers head back to the picket lines again. >> we're calling upon the board of directors to immediately investigate this conflict of interest and to even order him to be removed from negotiations. >> we don't feel this created a conflict. it's a minor amount of money and we expect tom to be back at the table on tuesday. >> reporter: tuesday is when negotiations are expected to resume between bart managers and those two employee unions. now, hock has been on a 10-day vacation, but he does plan to return to the bargaining table on tuesday. the deadline to reach a deal and avoid another bart strike

if protests start getting out of hand. oakland leaders and community members say they have had enough violence in their city. a council member wants the city to declare a state of emergency, making it easier to receive financial and police aid from county, state, and the federal government. the announcement comes days after an 8-year-old girl and a 66-year-old dog sitter were killed in separate incidents. >> i don't walk around the neighborhood anymore. i'm kind of scared to walk by myself because, you know, who knows, somebody going to do the same thing to you. >> residents in the maxwell park neighborhood are discussing hiring private security. a block party is scheduled for later this morning near the home of judy solomon, the dog sitter who was killed on tuesday. people who say they are against the closure of the berkeley main post office will be making their voices heard today. they plan to protest outside the historic post office on austin way at 1:00 this afternoon. the postal service is moving forward with plans to sell the building to a private buyer. the agency says it is losing

millions of dollars and has to close postal facilities across the country. there is a renewed search this morning for a missing 21- month-old girl in oakland. the family of daphne webb plans to handout flyers at the corner of mountain boulevard and keller avenue. they will also canvas her mother's neighborhood. daphne's father reported the girl missing back on july 10th. other family members say they have not seen her since late june. new this morning, a female has been named as a new defendant in a civil lawsuit in connection to the death of saratoga teenager audrey pott. pott is the 15-year-old high school student who committed suicide last september. her family says she became distraught after three stages boys allegedly assaulted her at a party where she got drunk and passed out. cell phone videos documented the incident. prosecutors claimed pott tried to hide her role in what happened. an 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with a crash last month that killed a

biker in pleasanton. cody hall is being held at the santa rita jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. the accident killed a dublin woman and injured her husband. police also arrested hall's father, who they say is a convicted felon, while serving a search warrant in the case earlier this month. the san francisco chronicle reports police found two illegal assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition in aaron hall's home. california officials say violent crime in the state is up. however, crime rates remain at historic lows. the annual crime in california report tallied 160,000 violent crimes last year. that's about a 3% increase from 2011, when there were more than 155,000 violent crimes report. the state points out the figures are half of what crime levels were at 20 years ago. a new study has revealed fremont is the second safest city in the united states. irvine, california came in first. numbers are based on the fbi's latest crime data for cities with populations more than 200,000 people. fremont is one of six

that has been bringing us hot conditions inland, now pushing off to the east a little bit. still, the possibility of thunderstorms over the mountain tops of the sierra for the weekend. if you're going that direction, want to point that out. also want to head west. we have a tropical storm, flossie. winds right now at 65 miles per hour, weakening. but the reason i point this out is because it's making a trek towards the hawaiian islands. looks like monday night, into tuesday, it's going to cross right through. winds are expected to be 40 miles per hour at that time. so continuing to weaken. we'll be borderline tropical depression/tropical storm, but it is summer. if you are headed this direction for your week ahead, just make sure you check that out before you go. afternoon highs for today, under partly cloudy, mostly sunny skies for the bay area, 69 in oakland, 72 in heyward. mid-80s in concord. upper 80s in livermore. going to the garlic fest, it's going to be a nice, warm day, mid-80s. it is summertime and we know it could be hot out there. it's going to feel quite nice

. thank you for joining us this morning. giving you a live look at the overcast skies over jack london square, 56 degrees in oakland right now, with a light breeze. a gunman in south florida killed six people before being shot to death by s.w.a.t. teams early this morning. the hours-long stand-off started last night in the town of hialeah, just a few miles north of miami. s.w.a.t. teams say they rescued two hostages after storming the building. police are still investigating the motive for the hostage situation and identifying the victims. we are also following developing news in egypt, where close to 40 people have been killed in overnight clashes between protesters and police. they come just one day after hundreds of thousands of people took part in rallies across egypt, including a mass

demonstration in cairo's tahrir square. witnesses say police used tear gas to stop protesters from approaching a bridge in cairo, then fired on demonstrators. muslim brotherhood says as many as 70 people may have been killed. the operator of the bullet train that derailed in spain is now being held on suspicion of negligent homicide. wednesday's derailment killed at least 78 people. authorities will charge him with reckless homicide. spain's interior minister says evidence shows he was at fault. investigators are studying the train's data recorder to determine if the train was going too fast when it hit a curve on the tracks. a u.s. army soldier from antioch is to be awarded the nation's highest military award next month. staff sergeant ty carter distinguished himself in one of the costliest battles in the war. jake tapper has the story of bravery. >> reporter: it was a devastating taliban attack, captured in this insurgent-made

video. >> let's go! >> reporter: launched on an eastern afghanistan outpost, positioned so poorly, it was nearly indefensible. up to 400 insurgents used the high ground to stage and overwhelming assault on just 53 u.s. troops. >> every kind of weapon that they could get their hands on, they were throwing at us. we hadn't seen that before. >> reporter: eight u.s. soldiers were killed that day, the deadliest day for the u.s. in afghanistan that year. but there were heart-stopping heroics to defend the base. staff sergeant clint romashea has been given the highest honor for his bravery. now there will be a second white house ceremony for the same battle. this time, to sergeant ty carter, a member of b troop, 3rd platoon, nicknamed the bastards. that morning, carter had been risking his life running ammo to troops, when a sniper pinned him down and four others in this humvee. >> they had no more ammo left.

they were getting hit from every cl way. >> reporter: sergeant josh heart led two other soldiers to try and provide cover for their trapped comrades with their own humvee. it was a suicide mission. >> heart came across the net and said, you know, got rpg pointed right at me. and that was the last we heard from heart. >> reporter: bad went to worse. grounds began penetrating the humvee. the enemy was now inside the base. the five men trapped inside decided they needed to get out of there. three tried to make a run for it, while carter and sergeant brad larson provided cover. but enemy fire killed sergeant justin gallegos as he tried to help specialist stephan mace, who was badly wounded. mace was left lying, trapped in open ground. carter sprung into action, rescuing mace, bringing him back to the humvee. mace ultimately would not survive, but carter's bravery, among the brave, now deserving

the medal of honor. >> that was jake tapper reporting. according to the medal of honor society, the nation's highest military honor has been awarded to more than 3400 people since 1863. this morning, the faa has certified two types of drones for civilian use. the scan eagle will be used to survey ice floes and migrating whales off the coast of alaska. the puma drone can be used in emergency responses to oil spills. drone use in the united states has previously been limited to police and other government agencies. the u.s. air force says it is facing a shortage of fighter pilots. the military branch has created a retention program to keep the pilots it does have from leaving. the air force says it will be short 700 fighter pilots during the next decade. officials say pilots will receive $25,000 for every year they stay in. that offer goes up to nine years and $225,000. now, the air force says some reasons for the shortage include commercial airlines offering higher salaries and fighter pilot fatigue after

. first a delay, now we could be getting a better idea of when the new opening day will be for the eastern span of the bay bridge. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm maureen naylor. >> and i'm mike mibach. >> next week, we'll know more about the dependability of the bolts of the bay bridge. the bolts will be tested next week under extreme conditions to examine how they hold up to sea water and other conditions. the bolts will be bathed in saltwater to age them, then pressured with a force equal to 10 semi trucks. >> this is a particular test called the stress corrosion test. this test will tell us how long the bolts on the bridge will last under tension in a marine environment. >> while some engineers say corrosion caused previous bolts to fail, further testing has found no problems. officials may decide by the middle of next month when the new eastern span will open.

the contra costa times reports outside experts will discuss whether installing a temporary fix could allow the bridge to open before contractors finish repairs to faulty bolts. the span was scheduled to open labor day weekend, but an oversight committee pushed it back due to safety concerns. the $5 million celebration to mark the opening has been canceled. this morning, we are learning more about the suspicious device that shut down the bay bridge during the afternoon commute. officials say the device turned out to be a gray pipe that did not pose a threat. yesterday, a passer-by spotted the object near the treasure island off ramp and called 911. the bomb squad responded, shutting down all lanes of the bridge. >> it was something that looked very suspiciously of an explosive device. it was a very suspicious item, gray cylinder. it looked, looked very suspicious. >> the brief closure caused traffic to back up for miles. the commute was especially sluggish because of the giants and a's ball games and the jay-

occurrence. carol adamson, the owner of the cat, drove all over the city looking for her 8-pound feline. >> i really feel like i'm her mother and i'm supposed to keep her safe and i didn't. and it's a horrible feeling. >> the police department says they do plan on posting surveillance video online. adamson says she will pay a $500 reward to anyone who can safely return her cat, no questions asked. a homeless man accused of beating a man to death with a bat at a milpitas mall will appear in court on monday. the man hit the victim with the bat 11 times at a great mall sporting goods store last month. the suspect says the victim threatened him with a knife. police will not say what the relationship is between the two men. we are learning more this morning about the death of an infant inside a marysville hotel room. the 11-day-old baby was foundens inside a room at the rio inn motel. deputies say the child was surrounded by drug

paraphernalia, including syringes, needles, baggies and scales. >> standoffish from the baby. the baby was at the end of the bed and the mom was at the front of the bed where the pillows would be, just like, why does this keep happening! why me! why me! >> police say a 5-year-old boy was also living in the room. the mother of the children has been arrested on felony child endangerment charges. a veteran chp officer has been placed on administrative leave. 47-year-old jeffrey closson was arrested in sacramento on suspicious of inappropriately touching a disabled man. police say he was off duty when he allegedly touched the 22- year-old man in a bathroom at the arden fair mall last month. investigators identified closson as the suspect after looking at surveillance video. negotiations in the bart labor dispute are scheduled to resume tuesday, but there's a new twist. union attorneys accuse bart's lead negotiator of having a conflict of interest. they filed a complaint with the transit board of directors. they say the bart negotiator, thomas hock, may have benefited

from the strike earlier this month. hock is also the vice president of viola transportation. union attorneys say they obtained invoices showing the company billed $16,000 for helping run shuttle buses during the strike. bart parking fees are set to increase at two oakland stations in a couple of days. 50-cent increase will go into effect on monday at the macarthur and west oakland stations. the daily fiat macarthur will soon be $1.50. the fiat west oakland will be $5.50. paid parking at vallejo stations starts thursday, august 1st in all ferry parking areas. that includes the downtown parking garage, which opened last year. it will cost $5 a day to park your car there. a monthly pass will cost $20. people will be on hand thursday to help drivers navigate the new parking fee machines. supporters of expanding ace train service to central california are hoping a sale tax increase will provide funding. owners could be asked to

approve a half-cent increase in sales tax next year. officials hope to start service to modesto by 2018 and extend service to turlock and murr said in 2022. drivers in contra costa county should expect delays on marsh creek road. crews with the water district will be putting in pipelines along the stretch between clayton regency mobile home park and royal oaks drive. the project could take three months to complete. most of the work will be sunday through thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. but at times, crews could be working from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. almost 160 acres have been burned by a grass fire in sonoma county. the fire started yesterday around 1:45 in the afternoon along lakeville highway, just southeast of petaluma. calfire, the marin county fire department, and local firemen all came together to contain the flames. authorities say the fire started away from the road on property owned by pegasus ranch. the fire burned 158 acres of dry brush and some eucalyptus trees. no one was hurt. a sea lion rescued by two

the former army intelligence analyst has admitted to sending classified information to wikileaks. he faces up to life in prison. we're learning more about what may have contributed to the high failure rate for san jose state's experiment with online learning. los angeles times reports that half the students enrolled in a pilot online learning program had already failed the courses once. the other half were students from an underprivileged oakland high school. the school suspended its online program for the fall semester after half the students enrolled had failed the classes. more than two dozen healthcare workers at ucla have been arrested after staging a sit-in right in the middle of rush hour traffic. police made the arrest after the protesters formed a circle in the street at the busy intersection of westwood and wilshire boulevards. workers say they are protesting stalled contract talks for 12,000 of ucla's patient care technical employees. this morning, the fda is proposing new rules to ensure the safety of foods imported

enforcement in the east bay are bracing for more violent demonstrations. oakland police are trying to avoid a repeat of vandalism that followed a quittal of george zimmerman. oakland police plan to step up patrols today. the department said it's aware of several demonstrations including a rally for martin scheduled for this afternoon. officers say they are prepared if protests start to get out of hand. leaders and community members say they have had enough of the violence. councilmember wants the city to declare a state of emergency making easier to receive financial and police aid from the county, state and federal government. the announcement comes days after an 8-year-old and a 66- year-old dog sitter were shot and killed in separate incidents. >> i don't walk around the neighborhood anymore. i'm kind of scared to walk by myself. who knows, somebody going to do the same thing to you. >> reporter: residents of the

its part of the latest planet of the apes film. we are live where little hollywood has come to town. >> reporter: good morning. the film crew shooting scenes for the dawn of the planet of the apes. it's the sequel to the rise of the planet of the apes. you can see the set up. it's drawing quite a crowd. if you look down to the right you can see people, probably tourists taking shots of this set up that the crews have put together. obviously the proper department hard at work. one woman asked me what happened and we had to let her know this is all for a movie that's being shot today. filming will start early this afternoon here at this location and i'm told there are several other locations where they will shoot. that means expect traffic tie ups. we see police in position to make -- to shut down some of the streets in this area. you want to be aware of that.
