>> reporter: reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> what do you think about the pope's comments? join the conversation on facebook. a bomb scare forced red cross employees out of a building in san francisco this morning. someone with a disguised voice called in the threat at 10:00 a.m. this morning saying a bomb would go off at noon. authorities the red cross, police searched but didn't find anything suspicious and they lifted the evacuation order at 12:15 p.m. san francisco police arrested one man and are looking for four more in a stabbing this morning. the 49-year-old victim was stabbed during an altercation

and is being treated for life threatening injuries. the man is in custody. this is the city's 4th stabbing in two days. to our coverage on another possible bart strike. with no agreement today they have only six days left to try to avoid a strike. the union's contract extension ends august 4 and at this point neither side seems to be giving an inch. >> workers today shouted down bart's general manager during a transportation event in san francisco. >> members of the two bart unions confronted the general manager. she was giving a speech to the american public transportation association. the workers demanded that she

the strawberry village shopping center. started at 3:30 a.m. this morning at the mall. firefighters think the fire may have been sparked by an appliance at a laundry room. it caused $100,000 in damage. a restaurant suffered minor smoke damage. a man is on the run after stealing his brother's truck and being involved in a deadry truck. emmanuel sanchez-martinez took his brother's truck last night from their home and then drove it on to southwest boulevard. as he sped away his brothers, jose sanchez and edgar sanchez- martinez jumped on to the sides of the truck trying to keep him from stealing it. on southwest boulevard he lost control of the truck and hit a brick wall throwing his two brothers from the truck. jose sanchez died and edgar sanchez-martinez was thrown 50

. new at 5:00 p.m. doctors say this girl beat death. survived a diagnosis that was considered fatal. she was under the care of doctors at stanford. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live there now and she sounds like a real fighter. >> the kind of fighter doctors never seen before. this baby was born without kidneys but she is recovering here at the hospital.

she receiving more treatment at the hospital and doctors say they are optimistic. we would like to show you a photo we received of her this afternoon. this is a photo from inside the unit. 2.2 pounds of her with her father and mother. doctors say the family knew about her condition before she was born. with no kidneys the diginosis is -- diagnosis is fatal but a team of doctors performed a series of injections during pregnancy and helped her become the first baby with this condition to breathe on her own after birth and she was rushed to the hospital at stanford 16 hours later. >> babies born court kidneys don't have enough -- born without kindies don't have enough lung -- kidneys don't

have enough lung function to survive. >> this baby has none of the features of the syndrome that is associated with it and looks to be normal except there is just no kidneys there. >> reporter: while the baby is breathing on her own she will continue a need dialysis and a kidney transplant. in a statement on facebook the parents said they had multiple doctors tell them their babeopy had no chance -- habey had no chance of sur-- their baby had no chance of survival but they prayed for a miracle and they got one. eric rasmussen ktvu channel 2

news. a half dozen people rallied outside the state building building to protest the death of an inmate. it is being investigated by a hanging but they said he was taking part in a statewide hunger strike. >> we have been passing out patient education that they are at risk to serious injury or death if they don't take in calories. >> the hunger strike to protest conditions entered its 22 day today. 600 state prisoners are refusing to eat. doctors say they are keeping an eye on the inmates and monitoring those who started eating again. doctors say they should be -- could be at risk for refeeding syndrome. that causes a fall in

when it is president obama and hillary clinton, it is a big deal. she had lunch at the white house today. it is being analyzed because hillary clinton is considered a contender in the next presidential race. a train crash left 44 people injured in switzerland. 4 people are said to be seriously hurt and the driver of one of the trains is unaccounted for. it left the two trains locked together on the same track. it comes after a train derailed last week in spain killing 79 people. and today the crown prince of spain was consoling the victims. funeral services were being held near where the accident happened. the conductor is facing several counts of negligent homicide. he said he was going too fast

p.m. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am julie haener. >> some residents are trying to keep their homes and families safe. the killings of a 66-year-old woman and a 8-year-old are prompting people to take action. ktvu's paul chambers talked to an expert about the growing interest in private security and its success at reducing crime. >> reporter: moments before we went on the air i talked to a woman, she said there have been three burglaries within the last year and police are over worked and don't show up when needed so there is a push for private security. >> three hours before the police came. >> reporter: he says he was home when a man tried to break into his house. >> i heard a loud crash. i knew someone was coming in. >> reporter: he yelled out and the burglar left. now people are thinking of hiring private security. >> a lot of people calling us.

>> reporter: i met with him in march of this year when the 63 homes decided to hire private security. a rash of attempted burglaries in december prompted the idea. he says the presence of patrols seem to reduce crime by 70%. >> in the two years prior to -- we had 30 burglaries. in 4 months since we had one. >> reporter: he says my mid- september he expects 1,000 homes to be under prive patrols. he is on a fixed income and can't afford the private security but welcomes the extra eyes and ears. >> he would have some kind of deterrent. >> reporter: depending on the number of homes that join, the private security can ru
