>> reporter: i met with him in march of this year when the 63 homes decided to hire private security. a rash of attempted burglaries in december prompted the idea. he says the presence of patrols seem to reduce crime by 70%. >> in the two years prior to -- we had 30 burglaries. in 4 months since we had one. >> reporter: he says my mid- september he expects 1,000 homes to be under prive patrols. he is on a fixed income and can't afford the private security but welcomes the extra eyes and ears. >> he would have some kind of deterrent. >> reporter: depending on the number of homes that join, the private security can run

between 5-$800s a year. with the recent -- $500 to $800 a year. paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. in an hour concerned residents will gather for a community meeting in the same neighborhood where she was killed last week. that meeting is held at the recreation center in oakland. that meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. local law enforcement and the fbi teamed up as part of a crack down on the sex trafficking of children. more than 100 children were saved in four days. ktvu's ken pritchett is in oakland where some of the children were rescued. >> reporter: police rescued two of the children on east 14th street as part of this operation. they were being sexually exploited and of the 105

children rescued in a nationwide operation led by the fbi, a dozen were here in the bay area. >> the fbi called it operation cross country. the fbi office in san francisco led 17 bay area sweeps. >> we were able to rescue 12 juveniles and arrest 21 pimps. >> reporter: 8 of the children were from the east bay, 3 from the north bay and 1 from the south bay. >> if we could get one off the street that is success. >> reporter: this is just the beginning. recovery is difficult and complicated. >> a lot of minors don't view themselves as victims. >> reporter: she a youth case manager, they provide services for victims of sex trafficking. she says victims will leave one unsafe environment and end up in another, often they are run aways. finding a stable home a major

challenge. >> a young woman said i would rather be abused by somebody i don't know than somebody i know. >> reporter: in addition to the 21 pimps arrested in the bay area, 64 adult prostitutes were arrested along with 12 johns. in oakland, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> did the fbi have an explanation on why 10% were from the bay area? >> reporter: well, the fbi said it is just the size of the area. a large area, the bay area. the other thing had fbi has been working with law enforcement here for some time, dating back to 2007 when they held their first operation timed with the all-star game because the fbi had reason to believe the activity would spike. >> ken pritchett in oakland. thank you. >> one of the child prostitutes rescued is now 21 years old and

said former victims have to look within to regain their power. >> they can't hurt you anymore. you have a power now to wipe them out. the strongest thing we have is what we say, what we do. >> the fbi says she helped put away two pimps. to date the fbi says their program rescued 2700 children in sex trafficking rings. authorities are searching for clues in the killing of a 73-year-old transient. he was found yesterday near second street and parker avenue. he died later at the hospital. he died from blunt force trauma to the head. anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office. the possibility of another bart strike. we are 6 days away from the

expiration of the 30 day contract extension which ends on sunday august 4. today both sides met again but there is still no agreement in sight. >> workers shouted down the general manager during an event in san francisco. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar has been monitoring the talks and he is live from headquarters at the caltrans building in oakland. tom? >> reporter: the chief negotiator came down and said there was no progress. she indicated that whatever progress was made in 2-1/2 months produced only minor results at best. >> reporter: it takes hundreds and hundreds of specific negotiated clauses to make up a bart contract and so far few

minor issues have been agreed upon. >> we have dozens of agreements that have been reached with the unions. >> all of the tentative agreements we had we had for three weeks. >> reporter: these minor agreements have nothing to do with wage, pension and healthcare issues that remain far apart. >> we think the work we will do this week on the major issues could be fruitful. >> we should have spent the past 12 days trying to revolve them. >> the union says bart's negotiator remains on vacation till tomorrow. >> we thought he would be back today but we haven't seen anyone today. >> the rest of the issues are raised so they avoid talking about the important issues. >> strike increasingly likely looms for next monday morning. >> to extend the contract and

negotiator those projections are false. she claims bart has a surplus that would fund the proposals. the faa is advising all foreign airlines to perform instrument landings at sfo. the recommendations were made yesterday in the wake of the asiana airlines flight 214 crash. two aborted landings. part of the problem is the approach to the runways that is over featureless water which makes it difficult to pilot whose are unfamiliar with the airport. >> what happens is we think we are higher from the ground than we are so we could be taken by surprise. >> the faa said air traffic controllers will assign approaches that use a gps system. an 18-year-old man is

accused of scamming more than a dozen people out of thousands of dollars and police fear there could be more victims. investigators say he placed a false ad on craigslist offer a condo for rent but would disappear after collecting the security deposit and first month rent. police believe he scammed renters out of $25,000. new proposal by the governor to fund unemployment insurance by raising payroll taxes isn't sitting well with some. california has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. it would raise taxes to pay back $10 billion it borrowed from the government. but business groups say it is a bad idea when businesses are starting to bounce back. >> businesses absorbing billions of dollars of cost this year immediately that they are going to have to figure out

centers centers discovered bedbugs. ktvu's rob roth visited both sides today and explains the measures being taken to exterminate the bugs. >> reporter: good will san francisco is in bad straits. workers are wearing protective clothing and tossing away 15 huge dumpsters full of donated clothes, books, you name it and the shelves are bear on mission street in san francisco. >> i think is tragic for our organization. >> reporter: they found bedbugs like these in the warehouses last week as workers were processing donated items. an employee spotted the dugs on -- the bugs on friday. what they don't know is whether they spread to this part of the

the thing i don't understand about the suicide person is the people that try and commit suicide for some reason don't die, and then that's it. they stop trying. why? why don't they just keep trying? what's changed? is their life better? no. in fact, it's worse 'cause now they've found out here's one more thing you stink at. that's why these people don't succeed at life to begin with-- because they give up too easy. i say pills don't work, try a rope. car won't start in the garage, get a tune-up. you know what i mean? there's nothing more rewarding than reaching a goal you've set for yourself.
