the driver can't hear me. let's go back to brian and pam. we are following breaking news of a fire that burned several cars in hayward. it started just over an hour ago. claudine wong is there now with more on what happened. claudine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. let me show you the damage at the carport. there are actually seven in here. if you look at the far back end, you can see it lookalikes a little bit of a fire is still burning. hayward fire department keeping a close eye on this situation as you can see they are standing right next to us. talking about what happens next. a lot of foam and water. for the most part this fire is out. i want to bring in sheila. i'm sorry about the loss of your car. can you tell me what happened this morning as you woke up to the fire? >> reporter: well, let me start off when we came in, we came in

at midnight when it was in good working condition and parked our car. and we got -- >> everything looked fine at midnight? >> everything looked fine. we went to sleep and someone was knocking on our door and woke up and like oh this is weird. who would knock on our door at this time? we got out and heard people screaming. i saw flames going up and that is when i woke up my husband. >> reporter: the whole carport was on fire. we talked to one of the neighbors that jumped into her car to save it. it appears it was on the far end. your car is where there is still flames that we can see. was your car completely engulfed by the time you got there? >> i didn't get the whole picture because everything was busting up. but everything was on fire. smokes were going out. and loud noises. >> big fire. >> reporter: all the hoods were popping up. you just showed me a picture of your car. you just got it painted how

long? >> i put a lot of money in this car like $14,000 in that car. i just got it from the shop. barely two weeks ago. and i put a lot of money in this car. >> reporter: do you have any idea how this could happen or what happened? >> we have a vehicle standing over here not damaged and the person is not even down here. >> you can see all the people around here they know who did it. it's the guy on the corner over here. he's the one that was midnight riding a bike here. and his truck you can see his truck is safe inside and all of our cars burned up. >> reporter: so emotions very high and people very upset. >> we definitely don't feel safe anymore. >> yeah you don't feel safe around here. >> reporter: how long have you lived here? >> about a year. >> yeah. >> reporter: all right. well i'm very, very sorry for the loss of your car. i'm glad you are safe and okay.

and obviously hayward police and hayward fire on scene. thank you for talking to us. taking a look you can see flames have come up on the top of that carport. they are getting ready to put watered on it. we will keep an eye on the situation. we will talk to fire and police. obviously investigations under way to figure out how this happened. but no injuries. and damage extensive out here behind this building. live in hayward claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. in the meantime developing news in borkly as detectives are investigating the city's third homicide of the year and the second in two weeks. now police responded to a report of shots fired at san pablo avenue and delaware street. when they arrived they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds lying outside a liquor store. he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. >> i heard three bangs. it didn't sound like gunshots at first. once when i went outside a girl was screaming call 911.

>> they hope a store surveillance camera will help them track the shooter. the victim's name was not released but we know he is 24 years old. police will check to see if last night's shooting is connected to the earlier case for a deadly gang related shooting. union leaders have now officially given us 72 hour strike notice. the clock is ticking toward the sunday night deadline and a walkout that would shut down the entire bart system. bart's board of directors will meet at 9:00 this morning for a special meeting. that is after they issued a 72 hour notice. union leaders say their negotiations with management have gone nowhere. and they say they had no choice. >> things that we had signed thought were agreed upon, they

came back and said no, these are no longer do we agree to them. so we have gone backwards in the last 30 days. >> we can continue to talk way past august 4th if that is what works. but a strike is only going to stall the process. >> both sides say they are willing to work around the clock this weekend to reach a deal and keep bart trains running but union leaders say they will be at this morning's board meeting to ask management to change the tone of the negotiations during these critical final days. millions of bay area commuters are on edge bond eggerring if they will be running on monday morning. yesterday we spoke to some at a hair salon. many rely on bart to get to work. >> very worried to where i probably won't sleep because i'm worried about how i will get to my job. >> we are all on pins and

needles. >> the owner of the salon says 80% of his clients rely on bart. many have been coming in this week in case there is a strike on monday. stay with us here at ktvu for continuing coverage. if there is a bart strike, we will be here starting at 4:00 monday morning. also new this morning a chain reaction killed a motorcyclist in oakland. it happened just after 10:00 last night at the ad line street bridge. witnesses say the male motorcyclist was lying on the ground from a first accident. they say while cars were stopped in front of him, a speeding suv came by minutes later. they say it hit a car then rolled over the motorcyclist. >> it went up on the curb and flipped over and landed right on top of the motorcycle driver. it was completely -- he was completely unresponsive. >> police are in facing the

circumstances of the first accident as well as the follow up crash. the driver of the suv remained on scene. police in south san francisco will be on the lookout for motorcycle riders who are speeding or under the influence this weekend. they plan to conduct a special enforcement operation tomorrow. officers will also be looking for riders who are being reckless or making illegal traffic maneuvers. the operation comes after two deadly dui motorcycle crashes. the man in charge of monitoring the oakland police department is criticizing the force. thomas fraser calls the police response disappointing. he says upgrading the intelligence system is a priority. today san francisco hosts a conference to combat child sex trafficking. earlier this month a nation- wide fbi sting recovered 105 children and arrested 150

alleged pimps. the pay area saw -- the bay area saw the highest with 12 children and 18 arrests. they will focus on policy enforcement, and victim support. the city of richmond is planning to file a lawsuit against chevron for damages related to last year's refinery fire. richmond mayor gail plans to hold a news conference today. chevron needs to be held accountsable. the fire happened on august 6th of last year. thousands of people were sent to the hospital for respiratory problems. chevron says a lawsuit will be a waste of the city's resources. happening today we will get our latest look at the new phase of testing for bolts. last friday we showed you the facility where they are being put through extreme testing. engineers are bathing them in salt water to age them. corrosion called a previous bolt to fail.

inland temps will warm up after the cool breezy day yesterday. 60s and 70s by the water. >> thank you, steve. welcome back it's 4:45. the u.s. is thinking twice about meeting with russia since the country decided to grant temporary asylum to nsa leaker edward snowden. white house spokesman suggested that president obama may not hold a top level meeting with russian president vladimir putin set for next week. it's possible he may boycott the summit in russia. he was granted asylum in russia for one year. congress is now considering a bill that calls for sweeping changes in the safety rules for college athletes. the legislation would require annual concussion tests for most athletes. the bill would also require ncaa schools to guarantee four

year scholarships to athletes that compete in the so-called collision sports. there would be tough penalties for schools that break the rules. landmark bar is heading into the final weekend. is set to close its doors on sunday after 36 years in business. owner tony says the building changed hands recently and the new landlord wants more rent than he can play. it's a blues bar. he says the final act on sunday night will be chris brown and the uptown blues band. thomas henderson is adding to his collection of landmark bills. he is paying $8 million for the old building on broadway and kenneth street. that is expected to create 500 new jobs in oakland. henderson also owns the old rock city theater.

cameras here getting into san francisco. it looks good. should there be a bart labor to bage next week, this will be key. i think a lot of people will be getting up early and use this bring -- this bridge. 4:48 let's go to steve. sal. >> yes, sir? >> it's currently 64 in fairbanks, alaska. if you haven't heard fairbanks have had record setting warmth this year. like 30 days of 80 or higher. it's been incredibly warm. we have a little bit of an on shore breeze. nothing compared to yesterday. it will be warmer today. warmer friday. foggy by the coast. it looks like it's down a little bit. 60s and 70s and mid to upper 80s. maybe a few 90s as well. 57 fairfield. their breeze is nothing compared to yesterday.

you watch for that delta breeze. not nearly as breezy or windy. sfo west at 16. gust to 22. there is still a little bit of a push to the westerly breeze. overall we see a little bit more fog. the main low up in the pacific northwest is moving. it packed its bags. until a piece of energy breaks off, that won't be until the weekend. then we see a little warmer. normal pattern. cool coast. warm to hot inland is the warmer pattern. now we are into early august here. it looks like a lot of low clouds. kind of a breezy, mild to cool pattern. fog, sun it will be warmer today. fog near the coast. warmer inland. 80s. so you get 60s and 70 ann 80s. a few upper 80s to near 90 degrees. i this will be the -- i think this will be the warmest days.

a san francisco soldier who died more than 60 years ago as a prisoner of war in north korea has finally been laid to rest. hundreds of veterans turned out to honor joseph steinburg who was buried with full military honors. steinburg was just 31 when he died of malnutrition at a prison camp during the korean

war. his remains were recently identified using dna from family members. a former south bay elementary schoolteacher has been found guilty of molesting his students. jurors found craig chandler guilty on five counts of lewd and lascivious charges. the schools principal was also convicted of a misdemeanor for not reporting the suspected child abuse to authorities sooner. he faces 70 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in september. starting next month it will be easier to get from san francisco to los angeles. delta airlines will start shuttle service between sfo and lax. there will be 14 flights every weekday. they will have a separate check in counter as well. all passengers will be offered free california wine, beer, and healthy snacks. the service starts on tuesday september 3rd. i'm sure a lot of people will
