morning august 2nd i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve has a lot to tell you about this morning. >> yeah a little bit. it will be warmer inland. we do have a little bit a decrease in that sea breeze. there is a lot more fog and low clouds. not much change coast and bay. here is sal. good morning. westbound bay bridge is going to be slow but here at the mccarthur maze it does look good. when you get to the toll plaza it's really slow because of an earlier crash on the bridge. didn't stay there for too long. 237 is light. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. we continue with our breaking news. six cars destroyed. one damaged in a fire at a carport early this morning in hayward. i want to take you live to the scene this morning of what is left of these cars. it happened at 3:20 this morning on pierce and gray street off mission boulevard. you can see the extensive damage there in our live picture of the area.

neighbors tell us here at ktvu news by the time they figured out what was going on behind the homes, the whole carport was on fire. they saw a line of cars all engulfed in flames. >> you got out, we heard people screaming and then i saw flames going out, tires rusting. and then that is when i woke up my husband and i came out and everything was on fire. >> firefighters are now combing through the cars to find out where and how the fire started. your time now 6:02. now to our continuing coverage. >> another possible bart strike monday morning bart workers will meet. this comes after bart unions formerly issued a 72 hour notice they could walk off at job at one minute past midnight monday morning. and we have team coverage. we begin with tara moriarty with more on the strike

morning. >> we are away from the bart station and we've seen a commuters hopping on trains. they know their time is running out. come monday they may not be able to catch a train. equally as frustrated are the bart they i edge to lay do talks. ty -- a 30-cay contract extension was supposed to change the dynamic between the two sides but unfortunately it has not. >> we don't want the system or the service interrupted. we work hard every single day. >> we can't negotiate or continue to negotiate against ourselves. so it takes to parties. >> reporter: bart spokesman calls the 72 hour notice of a strike disappointing and says the unions are the ones failing to respond to reasonable compromise. >> we're in there tonight king

some talk -- tonight doing some talking. we are back in there tomorrow. we will talk way past august 4th if that works. but a strike will only stall the process. >> reporter: union leaders are pointing fingers at tom hawk. bart's hired consultant who may be accused of playing hardball. today they will ask the board to change its tune before it's too late. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:04. start getting ready now. that is the advise from transit officials if no deal was reached and bart workers walk off the job monday. janine de la vega is joining us live in fremont. telling us about options for commuters including casual car pooling. what are commuters saying this morning. >> reporter: people are shaking their heads. they think a strike is unevidentable. they are trying to think of what they will don monday. one option is to come to a bart

station and door pool. these aren't official locations. but if you do decide to on the bay bridge or i-80 three more people are required to use those diamond lanes. afternoon pickups back to the east bay are typically done on spear street. i spoke to one commuter about how he plans to get to work. >> i a probably going to drive and mess up the freeway system and clog it more. and it is going to hurt. it is not going to be convenient. >> reporter: what about car pool something >> i don't have an option for car pooling. because i work odd hours. >> reporter: one of the questions people have never casual car pooled is am i obligated to pay the driver? when it comes to tolls riders can volunteer a dollar or so

liquor store. when officers ai'ved, they found the -- arrived they found the victim a 25-year-old man lying on the ground. he had been shot several times. he was taken to the hospital but pronounced dead a short time later. >> i heard three bangs. it didn't sound like gunshots at first. >> investigators hope a store surveillance camera will help them track the shooter. the victim's name has not been released. berkeley's first homicide occurred right across the street in the same area back in february. in gilroy this morning police say they have shut down an illegal gambling operation. the business son first street. according to the gilroy dispatch about 40 officers from several agencies shut down what they are calling an illegal gambling -- to dispatch this to all of the stores 41 computers or slot machines were occupied when the offers went in there

at 9:00 last night. there are also reports of a juvenile that drowned in san jose. it happened last night according to the san jose mercury news. right now we don't know the age of the child involved. we do know firefighters did rush to the area about 6:00 yesterday evening. we'll bring you more information and details as they are available. this coming semester the cal state university system will help students detect alcohol poisoning. it's called aware, awake, alive. it walks students through the sign of alcohol poisoning and includes a button to call 911. the hope is that -- and it's hopefully going to save lives. time now 6:0. >> there wassen -- the crash is

pump it up for one so you a get a little warmup one day and then it 6609 noon. a high of 74 degrees. 40s napa is in there. novato. santa rosa out to the russian river area there is a lot of 40s. 5e san jose -- 55 san jose. southwest travis 17. not bad. concord is 13 gusts to about 20. but i think most locations the breeze is a far cry from yesterday. anything less than 20 is a sure sign inland temps will warm up. a lot more low clouds than fog.

san francisco soldier who died more than 60 years as a prisoner of war in north korea has finally been laid to rest. hundreds of veterans honored first class joseph steinburg he was buried with full military

honors at golden gate national cemetery. steinburg was only 31 years old when he died at a prison camp during korean war. his remains were recently identified usingdnfrom family members. right now members of congress are grilling federal officials about missing weapons. they released a report last month that says u.s. park police lost track of thousands of handguns, rifles, and machine guns. that review sound a lackadaisical attitude toward managing those weapons. there is new information why the united states will be closing some of the embassies in the middle east and africa this weekend. kyla campbell is joining us live from washington where one lawmaker just talked about who might be behind the latest threat. >> reporter: the chairman of the house foreign services committee says lawmakers were

given some information and without revealing classified information he did say they believe the threat is linked to al qaeda. the state department is shutting down u.s. consulates and embassies on sunday. which is a normal workday. there is a chance that closures could happen even longer. they say the state department will not take any chances with threats considering after the they orbingen libya. >> the department has been deprived of information out of caution and care indicates we should institute the precautionary steps. >> reporter: this is happening as the house is -- i will explain their plan when i see you next. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. 9,000 people have now

signed an online petition in support of a teacher in southern california. english teacher ken was fired says he was fired for marrying his gay partner last month. that marriage came after the u.s. supreme court cleared the way for same sex marriage to resume in california. he taught at an all girl's catholic high school just outside of los angeles. his lawyer seized his firing as a potential test case involving gays and religious institutions. we are learning more about the abuse three women suffered while being held captive for ten years in cleveland, ohio. one of the victims michelle knight confronted her captor at his sentencing hearing. >> i will live on, you will die a little every day. >> photos shown in court show the small room where michelle knight and gina dejesus were chained to the wall and repeatedly sexually assaulted. we are looking at the adjacent

room where amanda berry was born with her daughter and held captive. the head of the california prison will -- stage a hunger strike. the inmates were angry about conditions and solitary confinement. the hunger strike started july 8th. now the state head of the prison department says he will not negotiate with those advocates but he promised to talk about prison conditions. san francisco supervisor david campos made it official he is running. avian know cannot run for reelection because of term limits. the latest woody allen film that centers in san francisco opens in several bay area theaters today. blue jasmine is about a wealthy new york city woman that finds herself broke and heads to san francisco to live with her

sister. many parts of the movie were shot in the bay area last august. the film will be screened at select theaters in san francisco, oakland, mill valley, san rafael, albany and pleasant hill. time now 6:18. i want to see what sal will put on your tv screen about the commute. >> yeah. it's busy. we had a couple of crashes that were minor on the east shore freeway this morning at central. those had been cleared. a couple fender benders but didn't help much. when you get to the bay bridge if you are going to the city, you will see a big backup there at the toll plaza because of an earlier crash on the bridge. they slowed the metering lights down that caused a big backup that has not cleared yet. on fridays we have lighter volume. we are looking at 580 another slow day. and san mateo bridge we had an

earlier truck crash. that traffic is slow. and on the peninsula it looks okay. we do have a report of a new accident in san jose on northbound 101 at 280 that one just came in. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very happy friday morning. yesterday there was a pretty good fog bank. today it's a little taller order. it just looks like too much in the way of low clouds. although inland temps will warm up. 50s and 60s san francisco again looking like 63-64. upper 60s and 70s for some. then you get inland. we will see warmer conditions inland. but today looks like the warmest day and cool down starts on the weekend. foggy coast. another low is going to form off the coast. so inland temps 80s but coast and bay 60s and 70s. no change really there.

although the change will be more fog. another system see the carving out of it. a hit cool this morning. unless you are by that fog bank. low clouds will head back to the coast. it looks like we will see that ramp up there. friday it will burn back pretty quick. but it's not going anywhere. there will be some areas near the coast. by continue that low will settle in. highs today 80s and 90s for some. a little breezy but not nearly as windy as yesterday. temperatures near average to slightly below. and not much change on saturday. does look cooler on sunday. bank of america could face civil charges over mortgage back securities. it plans to sue the north carolina based bank. many of the investments went sour when the housing market collapsed. bank of america says it's

working to put the issues behind it and cooperating with investigators. delta airlines plans to start a shuttle service between san francisco and los angeles. right after labor day the airline will offer 14 flights every weekday. passengers will have a special check in and they will be offered free california wine and snacks on every flight. time now just about 6:22. a shark attack and a woman is very lucky to be alive. how big was that shark? what doctors are saying. a controversial new casino in the north bay. and legal arguments are set for today. the reason they may never be heard. southern california woman still in the hospital in hawaii after being attacked by a big shark. two of the beaches on move wee were closed as a result -- maui were closed as a result. she was enjoying a morning swim when all of a sudden a shark slammed into her. >> i didn't see it comes and i didn't see it going. the er doctor said according to the bites it looks like a 20-

foot shark. >> she had emergency surgery. the bite left a 15-foot wound in the middle of her spine. this was supposed to be the day for opening arguments in the legal fight over the great resort and casino. however a judge has thrown out the case and casino opponents are trying to figure out their next step. they want to stop the casino from having any gambling expect for bingo machines and card games. 6:26 is the time. let's check in with sal for traffic this morning. sal. >> all right, pam. we are looking at the south bay. just a look at the santa clara valley. and northbound 280 traffic does look good getting up to highway 17. southbound 280 that crash at seventh has been removed. we are looking at the sunol grade and 680 traffic there

looks good. 580 is slow again from the livermore valley into livermore. it gets battener dublin. there is a big backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go to steve. thank you. a little bit more in the way of clouds and fog. sea braze cut in half compared to yesterday. it does look warmer away from the coast but a lot more fog has returned to the coast. so 60s and 70s closer to it. pam. thank you, steve. 6:26. the countdown to a possible bart strike monday morning. this morning's special meeting that followed a grim announcement. investigators try to figure out what caused this fire here at this carport in hayward, there is discontent among residents. why one of the men that live near the carport was taken away in an ambulance. the opening bell about to ring this morning. we'll tell you why there are fruits and vegetables there.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. just getting ready to ring the opening bell there in new york. we're talking fruits and vegetables over there on the nasdaq. sprouts farmers market. based in arizona. there is the opening bell live. they are celebrating its recent ipo. stocks have don pretty well. it looks like it will be up again 4%. trading at $40 a share. i guess they have specialized in organic foods. they had some competition out there but they are doing well. >> we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning nows for pam cook it's friday, august 2nd i'm dave clark. >> 6:30. >> flames in hayward damaged several cars in the carport early this morning and residents are blaming one of their neighbors. claudine wong spoke to a man

who said he was hit by someone who say he started the fire and there are reports he just got taken away in an ambulance. what happened out there? >> reporter: well, the story keeps taking a lot of twists and turns. we will take you through what happened and explain what we are learning from residents and from the man they believe may have had a hand in this fire. huh he is defenning -- defending himself. first let's hoe you what happened. you can see the extent the damage of the vehicles that were in this carport. six cars destroyed. there were more cars in here. eight. one woman had a car in that parking spot actually drove her car out while it was burning and another man who's car was right here his truck is actually all the way over there. and you can see it made it out with minor damage to it. now let's take you through how this all happened. it was about 3:20 this morning. i want to show you video we got from firefighters. that is new video show that shows you how hot it was

burning. this fire was reported at 3:20. firefighters said it took only ten minutes to get it out. what residents are telling us one of the neighbors banged on their doors to get them out. they also say though they believe he had a hand in it. so much so that after the fire started dying down vaid says he was hit by a friend of one of the neighbors who was suspicious he may have started it. we talked to him before he left by ambulance and here's what he had to say. >> my neighbors friend or something decided they would sucker punch me. >> reporter: they hit you? >> yeah. and it looks like it was more than just a regular fist. >> reporter: what do you say to them when they say you started this fire? >> thank you very little. >> reporter: i mean are you saying you didn't? >> of course not. why would i start a fire in my own apartment complex?

>> reporter: so this is video of him being taken away in the ambulance just within the last ten minutes because he does need stitches. he says he saw flame, tried to put it out. it didn't go out so that is when he started banging on doors. as far as an official cause, investigators just getting under way and trying to sort through all of this. trying to figure out how it started. live in hayward claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. we're turning to our continuing coverage of another possible bart strike. look at the clock it's ticking toward the sunday night deadline and a walk out that would shut down the entire bart system. it would also be the second bart strike in the past month. >> bart's board of directors holding a special meeting at 9:00 this morning. this comes after bart's unions formerly issued a 72 hour strike notice opinion tara moriarty is joining us now from the west oakland bart station. tara. >> reporter: if you look around you can see a lot of people heading stairs to catch --

upstairs to catch a train. that is because around 7:00 last night bart union leaders emerged from their closed door labor talks and gave their 72 hour strike notice. then they went back inside and continued talking. a 30 day extension was supposed to change the dynamic between the two sides but unfortunately it has not. >> things that we had fined thought they were agreed upon they came back and said no. we have gone backwards in the last 30 days. >> we are in there tonight doing some talking. we are back tomorrow. we will continue to talk way past august 4th if that's what works. but a strike is only going to stall the process. >> reporter: union leaders are pointing fingers at tom hawk bart's hired consult. today those union officials are heading to the parking lot board meeting to make an appearance and ask the board to

late. the two sides will not stop negotiating right up until the 11th hour. judging by the way things have been going, a strike is most likely. live from west oakland bart station i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. transit officials are urging riders to plan ahead and find another way to work for monday morning. coming up at 6:45 what you need to know if you are considering casual car pooling. now stay with us here at ktvu news for continuing coverage. if there is a strike, we will be here for you starting at 4:00 monday morning to help you navigate your way through the morning commute. time is 6:35. a chain reaction crash in oakland last night killed a motorcyclist. this all happened around 10:00 at the adline street bridge. the man on the motorcycle was lying on the ground from the first accident. while cars were stopped in front of him, a speeding suv came by minutes later. they say it hit a car, then rolled over that motorcyclist. >> went up on the curb and

flipped over and landed right on top of the motorcycle driver. he was completely unresponsive. >> police are investigating the circumstances of that first accident as well as the follow up crash. meantime police in south san francisco on the lookout for motorcycle riders who are speeding or they are under the influence. that is a crack down this weekend. police say they will conduct this special enforcement operation tomorrow. they will also be looking for riders who are being reckless or making illegal traffic maneuvers. the operation comes after two deadly dui motorcycle crashes in south san francisco in recent years. berkeley police now investigating that city's third homicide of the year. now it happened just a few feet away from the first killing. ktvu brian flores is in berkeley with what police are now saying about this and people living nearby say this is a pretty safe area. brian. >> reporter: yeah. you are exactly right about that, pam. good morning, to you.

unfortunately police have not released a suspect description as police continue to talk with potential witnesses and the shooting happened here on san pablo avenue and delaware streets in berkeley. now if the location sounds familiar, that is because back in february of this year, there was another shooting in the area. for this case though, police say the shooting happened just after 9:15 last night near binges liquor store. police received reports of multiple gunshots heard in the bay area. and when they arrived they found a man lying on the street injured. he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died a short time later. this is borkly's second homicide in the past two weeks and third overall this year. an employee that works nearby tells us his reaction. >> i came out to the back and heard three bangs. it didn't sound like gunshots at first. when i went outside a girl was saying call 911. >> unfortunately this is our third homicide in berkeley.

it's a little uncommon we would have multiple shootings in a similar area, but at this stage it is our third one we are investigating. >> reporter: again police are asking anyone with information if they saw or heard anything to contact them. in the meantime they will look at things like store surveillance video to gain more leads into what happened. we will continue to follow up with the berkeley police department and give you the latest information. live in berkeley brian flores. the city of rich monday plans to sue chevron with damages to last years refinery fire. he says the fire did great harm to the community and chevron needs to be held accountable. that fire happened on august 6th of last year. thousands of people were sent to the hospital for respiratory problems. time now 6:38. let's go to sal. no friday light on the bay

bridge. >> no. we had a stalled vehicle up there for a bit. looking at interstate 880 north and southbound this traffic looks good. there are no major problems driving south. let's say you want to use the san mateo bridge that should improve a little bit. the san mateo bridge heading out but it's a little slow because of earlier problems there. livermore valley improving. a little bit of slow traffic over the altamont pass. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. unshine inland. a little bit of low clouds. a little bit more low clouds today than yesterday. the breeze is not nearly as strong. a lot of 70s. a little bump up for one day and bring it right back down. one low moved out. another one is beginning to break off. that will form right off the coast. that will keep our weather held in check. today is that between day. san francisco i will tell you a little chilly there right now. 53 degrees.

we will go for 63 today. exactly what it was yesterday. and san mateo judy informs me a nice tweet. they say the aloha festival is in san mateo. i did not know that. today we will go for 72 for a high. 40s. a lot of 50s though. low clouds making a little bit of a push today than yesterday. we had definite breaks yesterday. it's filled in a little bit more today. that tells how much has changed coast and bay. the pattern for early august is -- it's not as track cattic now. the next seven-ten days is kind of quiet. breezy cool below normal pattern. unless there is a fly in the ointment i don't think so. fog, sun, warmer inland but not much change coast and bay. that means 80s for some.

about how this fire started. rumors of a terrorist threat is forcing the united states to clossome embassies this sunday throughout the muslim world. the top u.s. official calls that threat a concerted effort to target an embassy or consulate in the middle east, north africa, and south asia. this morning at 9:00 a.m. bart's board of directors will hold a special meeting. this comes after bart's unions formerly issued a 72 hour notice. they could walk off the job at one minute past midnight on monday morning. janine de la vega is in fremont this morning with some of the options for commuters if bart workers go on strike on monday. a lot of people will have to find some other way to get around. janine. >> reporter: pam, i just spoke to one woman who was waiting here for a car worker. they were going to car pool to palo alto together i asked if a strike happened would she be willing to take others were

her? she said yeah but the idea of taking a stranger inside your car sounds scary but some people do it because an unofficial system is set up for that. there are areas designated for morning pickup. drivers usually drop off passengers at fremont and mission streets or nearby downtown san francisco. to car pool on the bay bridge and i-80 there must be three or more people in the car. one commuter we spoke to said he plans on car pooling with a coworker -- coworker. >> it's the only option i could drive but he lives in carquinez. >> do you think you will pick up any more people on the way? is that something that people should try to do? >> it's more of what people should do but not that time of the morning. we have to leave at 4:30. there is not a lot of people come into work that early. >> reporter: according to local

fog, sun, warmer away from the coast. not much change closer to it. inland we will get back into 80s or upper 80s. doesn't take much to pop up to get to mid 80s. if today isn't the warmest day temperatures will come back down. these are slightly below average for some. not much change saturday but i think we get a stronger sea breeze and more fog. looks cooler sunday into next week. chevron reporting profits of $7.5 billion. that is down 26% from this time last year. the energy giant says that is due to lower oil prices which cut into revenue and the cost of maintenance work done at some of the refineries. exxon mobile report of lower than expected earnings hurt its standing in the financial world. stockholders dump share causing them to fall 2.5%. that means exxon is valued at $4.12 billion. and gives apple the crown as the most valuable company in the world. time is 6:51.
