7:03 am
the sentiment here at the west oakland b.a.r.t. stration is here we go again. right now everything is bustling. come monday morning we may see the shuttle lines because the trains will not be running. last night around 7:00, we saw b.a.r.t. union leaders step out of their labor talks and give their 72- hour strike notice. they went back inside after that and they continued talking. 30-day contract extension was supposed to help these two sides, you know, give them some breathing room, regroup, come together, refocus. but that doesn't appear to be the case. >> we will continue to bargain in good faith with the hopes that the district will do the same so that we can effect a good contract that is equitable and fair for our riders and workers. >> reporter: b.a.r.t.'s spokesman said this is noticing and the unions are the ones failing to respond to reasonable compromise. >> we're in there tonight doing some talking. we're back tomorrow.
7:04 am
we can continue to talk to august 4th if that's what works. a strike is only gonna stall the process. >> reporter: union leaders are pointing fingers at thomas hock for busting the union. today, the union officials are heading to the board meeting for -- to ask the board to change their tune. the two sides will work right up until the 11th hour. judging by the way things have been going, this strike will likely happen. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:04. once again, b.a.r.t.'s 400,000 daily riders may need another way to get to work or school monday morning. b.a.r.t. will provide limited weekway round-trip charter service across the bay at no charges. the buses between the east bay and san francisco will run during the peak commute hours. but these buses can only carry about 4,000 passengers each day
7:05 am
in each direction. a.c. transit will provide its regular commuter bus service between the east bay and san francisco and the peninsula. it hopes to provide extra buses across the bay if there's a b.a.r.t. strike but that depends on the availability of both a.c. transit buses and drivers. many stranded passengers may hop on a boat like they did last month. the san francisco bay ferry plans to launch its boats earlier in the morning and increase the number of ferries from 8 to 13. there will also be more ferry runs from oakland, alameda and vallejo. the possibility of a b.a.r.t. strike next week will be the focus of a meeting at san francisco city hall at 10:00 a.m. this morning. ed me will meet with marty morganstern. you will remember he was the one who announced the 30-day b.a.r.t. contract extension last month. if there's a strike, we'll be here for you starting at 4:00

7:07 am
while it was burning and was able to save it. it's parked on the street. but it does have damage. there's one more empty space over here right where the firefighter is walking by. that space was actually occupied by this truck. that truck owned by a man. that takes us the story on another turn. his name is vade. he lives upstairs in the apartment complex. by many accounts, he does not get along with his neighbors. he started to bang on doors to get everyone out. we have video from firefighters -- you can't see the cars from behind the call walls of flames. the firefighters got the fire out in ten minutes. it started at 3:30 as the flames were dying down, vade said they took it upon themselves to take it out on him and more specifically his faith. >> my neighbor's friend or something decided they would
7:08 am
sucker-punch me. >> reporter: they hit you? >> yes. it looks like it more than just a regular fist. >> reporter: what did you say? >> thank you very little. >> reporter: are you saying you didn't start the fire? >> of course not. why would i start a fire in my own apartment complex? >> reporter: just before 6:30, firefighters came to look at his eye one more time and deep sided that he needed to go to the tonight to get it stitched up. he told us his apartment was trashed by neighbors. we talked to many residents out here. many of them believe this all needs to be looked at much closer by police. we can tell you that fire investigators are out here. they talked to vade before they left, taking a look at the scene. the investigators are trying to determine a cause. very emotional out here. small parties, they say even though this fire is out, they don't feel safe because they don't know the story goes from here. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, claudine.
