away from her home. ktvu's amber lee is following the story. she's live now with late information now, amber. >> reporter: i'm here with the younger sister of the missing woman. tonya coke who just flew in a few hours ago from new jersey. tonya what has you so worried about your sister. >> my sister was last seen on sunday august 4th after going out to find her missing dog and she has not seen since. this is completely out of character of my sister to be out of touch with her daughter or family. >> you also tell me her cell phone and car were missing and they've been recovered. >> she had two cell phones with her when she went missing. one was found hours after she went missing. the second was found near highway 80 near an exit ramp sometime yesterday.

>> you told me her work as an investigator for the federal prosecutor's office in sacramento, you told me a little bit about her work. do you think this plays any role in her disappearance. >> we just don't know. my sister is a criminal investigator for the federal defender office in sacramento. her work takes her out on the field. interviewing people from all walks of life. we don't know if someone involved with her job, it could have been someone that she met that evening to help look for her dog. we simply don't know. we're urging everyone in the community who has any information to text in a tip or call the police department. >> reporter: you were going to take us a picture. this is a very recent picture. >> this picture was taken last year almost to the day.

she is 50 years old and about 150 pounds. she's an articulate, gregarious warm loving person and her family really needs her. >> reporter: you were so worried that you said she's lived in oakland since 1991. >> yeah, she's now a 20 plus year resident of oakland. she came here after she graduated from columbia university to start her legal career. and she loves this community, she has many people here who love her and are concerned about her and we are just begging anybody who has any information to please call the police. >> reporter: thank you tanya. sorry about the disappearance. sandra coke's family is begging anyone with information to contact the oakland city police. her last family member to see her is her daughter who's been waiting for her to come home since saturday night. amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. all right, thank you amber. now to a story we've been

following throughout the day tonight a man accused of murdering a mother in southern california and then burning her home. that man is still on the run tonight. the man hunt for james lee demaggio is expanding and so too is the amber alert for his two children. ktvu's robert handa is here now and tells us why some people were surprised when they received that warning. robert-- >> reporter: well law enforcement agencies like to point out that california's freeways make it easy for a suspect to get from one part of the state to the other. many people in -- in conversation are speaking about the method of the messenger. this is the type of sound that nelson is used to from his home not the jarring alert that he got last night from the amber alert. >> my phone was buzzing. the first thing i did was grab the phone to see how i could

cut it off. >> reporter: amber alerts are usually issued close to where a child disappeared. the new system is built into many new phones so you have to opt out of it which is why the alert even caught law enforcement officers by surprise. >> the first thing i thought is what is that noise. i had no idea that we were going to be using this type of media, but i think it's a great idea. >> an alert is not going to be particularly helpful for the children that have been abducted. >> reporter: people we talked to called the new system jarring but effective. >> it's not a soothing music though. but-- >> reporter: it got your

attention. >> but it definitely got my attention. >> it's for the greater look. for the safety of children and teens. >> i'm very interesting. the way we can turn this deal off because i want to turn it off. >> reporter: on most phones you can opt out through the settings. the highway patrol says they hope people don't. it got five calls in san jose alone reporting a possible get away vehicle. much more than usual on cases starting in the bay area. robert handa, ktvu. the man hunt is still on for the suspect in that amber alert. police believe demaggio killed his long time girl friend. he then set fire to his own home with the victim's bodies

inside. authorities have not confirmed the name of the victims found. the board is hearing the latest information on ongoing negotiations between the transit agency and its drivers who are threatening to strike when the clock hits midnight. there are concerns that both sides have different views as to how much progress has been made. if wage, health care, employee safety and work rules are not worked out in the next few hours, 180,000 or so passengers could be left scrambling or stranded. >> regrettably our contingency plans involves simply no service. we cannot operate without

operators. >> ktvu will continue to monitor this developing situation and we'll have crews standing by right up until the midnight deadline. that possible ac transit strike has many in the east bay on edge. ktvu's rob roth spent the day speaking to riders. rob is live in oakland with teens who have summer jobs here and they say they're in jeopardy. >> reporter: they say what are they going to do if they can't take the job to get to those jobs. these nine oakland teenagers say they really like their summer jobs. they're working for oakland food connection getting ready to open a community kitchen in east oakland that promotes healthy eating. the students are also planting vegetables for the kitchen. they all have one thing in common, each gets to work each day by ac transit and ac transit workers may be going out on strike. >> i'm screwed. i'm just screwed. basically.

i'll have to call up and tell them that i can't show up today. >> reporter: andy says that would be hard, this is his first paying job and it's not easy for teenagers in the inner city to find jobs. >> i can't just walk up and say i want some money and i'm just going to get it. no i have to go to work. and i rely on the bus to get there. >> reporter: this young woman also doesn't know what she would do if there's a strike. she lives too far to walk and people are depending on her. >> there's people in my house that may need the money to pay for the bills or something like that. so i mean, the bus is helping me support my family also. >> reporter: ac transit averages 180,000 riders a day. they take it to stores, to church, to see family, and they ride it to the hospital like this mother who's son suffers from epilepsy. >> i can't even think what i would do without ac transit. >> reporter: now with b.a.r.t. riders they feel they have alternatives if there's a strike. but many ac transit passengers say for them there are no other

very first to know if there's a strike by b.a.r.t. or ac transit. a very public warning to both customers and bank workers. the fbi is searching for this crew behind a series of take over robberies. they are considered armed and dangerous. new at 6:00, ktvu's david stevenson live with a new warning and a second suspect wanted for similar crimes. david-- >> frank the fbi isn't just looking for the public's help in this case. today they gave us advise for folks who may come face to face with these robbers. five banks in five months. this first republic branch in san francisco on thursday became the latest target of the so called high jumper bandits. >> we definitely consider them armed, dangerous and a menace to society. >> reporter: still pictures show the crew in action. they climb over teller counters to collect the cash.

the latest robberies have investigators concerned because this time a bank teller was attacked. the fbi says from monterey to the oregon coast bank robberies are on the rise. agents are now warning bank customers about what to do if they're caught up in one. >> do what you're instructed to do and try to remember or recall as much as you can. in terms of details about the robber or robbers. >> reporter: the fbi today also released these pictures of the so called up close bandit. wanted in at least two separate san francisco robberies. the agency says it has seen 160 robberies in its northern california division since october 2012 making this region among the top three in the nation for bank robberies. david stevenson, ktvu channel

officers in their neighborhoods. back live now. this is the second year berkeley merchants are enjoying the night out with this perfect weather out here tonight. i tell you that they're now expecting big crowds. reporting live in berkeley, health and science editor john fowler. four young girls were hit by a tractor trailer last night. the girls were taken to the hospital. the big rig driver says that a car came into his path causing him to cut his turn short hitting the pole. san francisco fire investigators are reporting an unusual cause for a brush fire in the precidio that happened early this morning. the fire broke out at 2:00 this morning on mcdowell avenue. it appears a large pile of

vegetation and garden clippings began decomposing and actually generated enough heat to start a fire. the flames burned about an acre of brush and charred a couple of treeless. fortunately no structures were damaged and there are no reports of any injuries. now to the south bay where a fire broke out at a san jose storage facility sending thick large plumes of smoke into the air. the three alarm fire was reported shortly before 6: 6:30 at the public storage. the flames destroyed four units and all the content inside. windmill mobiles are popping up all over town. it's not clear how many are on display. but for many the public art display only adds to the city's charm. >> it's another addition to the things that people can see just by moving around the city. also it's very thought provoking. >> reporter: we've not been able to track down the artist but if you know who's behind

these mobiles please let us know. our cooling trend continues this afternoon. temperatures any where from five to 10 degrees below the seasonal average. take a look here. this is what we typically get in august. and this is what we received today. 74 in napa, 73 san jose. upper 60s oak land, 63 san francisco. around the bay 80. the temperatures are beginning to cool down 68 in concord right now. 67 walnut creek. low 70s in fairfield. low to mid-60s around the bay right now. 59degrees at half-moon bay. half-moon bay actually picked up enough drizzle to account for something. .1 reported at half-moon bay earlier today. the on shore breeze continues. fairfield 29 miles per hour. stronger than what we were looking at 24 hours ago. so that cool moist air continues to flow through the

bay and through the delta and we will continue with this low cloud deck any where from 2,000 to 2,400 feet. i've seen it deepen over the last few hours. i'm already seeing it return to parts of the bay area. and it will continue to move inland tomorrow morning we wake up with mostly gray skies once again. in fact, take a look at the time stamp. it's 9:00 this evening and we're already mostly cloudy around the coast and around the bay as we get into the overnight hours the clouds will continue to move inland stretching us through the delta and down into t. -- down into the sacramento valley. we're definitely going to see the possibility of morning drizzle, patchy fog with the late morning burn off. here we are at 1:00 in the afternoon and we're mostly sunny away from the coast once again. temperatures a lot like what we felt this morning. widespread 50s in the forecast. 55 for concord, 53 for downtown

san francisco. and for the afternoon, a lot like what we felt today. perhaps slightly cooler for some. 66 for oakland tomorrow. 74 for danville. low 80s for some of the warmest communities. 79 for morgan hill in the afternoon, 73 for san jose. along the peninsula for tomorrow. 73 redwood city. 63 in san francisco. on to the extended forecast. so how much longer is this going to last. >> how many longer? >> at least through thursday. friday we see a bump in the temperatures and for the weekend, 70s around the bay. >> no fires, no fire concerns. >> that's a plus. the bill is in the mail for hundreds of thousands of california property owners required to pay a controversial fire fee. the legislature approved the fee of up to $150 to help offset the cause of fighting fires in rural areas. bills for this year should start arriving in mid-august. the state has received

people baseball is kind of like you know in between football seasons. to a lot of people happy about it. even though it is just preseason football. big story developing with the 49ers of course. how are they going to do offensively with michael crab tree out. perhaps most of the year. the offseason before the injury they picked up bolden who happens to be one of the best red zone receivers in all of football evidenced by his catch in the super bowl against his now new teammate. he talks about developing a chemistry with the quarterback he'll be working with. hopefully for most of this season, collin kaepernick. >> that is just a trust thing. and i think the more you do it and the more that the receiver comes through for you the more you trust him. my thought is, every time a quarterback throws a ball to you, the more you complete the pass the more confidence he'll have in you. >> good one right there. meantime the a's just

continuing to have big time problems. scoring, they were blanked on sunday and the same thing today. red fans in high spirits with their team inen contention in the national league center. deep to center field goes bruce. there you go an early lead for the reds and their pitcher looks like he's going to get damage here but bruce with the glove. robbing josh redick of an extra base hit that would have knocked in a run and that's the way it's been going with the a's in the 7th inning. they're trailing 3-0. that's the sporting life for right now. you're right a lot of people looking forward to some football. niners hoping to get back to the super bowl. >> how much do you think kaepernick and l.a. will play. one or two series. >> at the very, very most. that's a game where you like to see the youngsters come out and have what they have. and see as far as the 49ers are

baseball season's starting. i'm very excited about that. do you ever sneak down to better seats at the game and get caught by the usher? when you're a kid, it doesn't matter, 'cause you're always getting chased from every place anyways. when you're an adult, it's really embarrassing to get caught. you have to pretend like there's some confusion, so you put on this whole act. you're looking at the tickets. i don't understand how this could have happened. let me see. oh, i see the problem. these are very good seats. i have very bad seats. that's the misunderstanding.
