tragic shooting. >> reporter: neighbors are shaking their heads in disbelief. they simply can't believe a baby was shot and killed on their street. police have roped off the 400 block of gormley avenue right here. you can see the house with the porch light on. officers have been going in and out of there interviewing witnesses, trying to learn how this unfolded. shots rang out just before 3:00 this morning. police tell ktvu that somebody fired their gun into the back bedroom of the home. the bullet struck a 20-year-old man and a 1-year-old boy. the baby was transported to the hospital where he or she -- where he died and the man died on scene. [foreign language] >> reporter: one neighbor tells us he heard six to eight shots at 2:45 this morning. he had been sleeping and had just woken up to go to work. neighbors say they had often seen children playing in the home's front yard but don't know who the residents are. to give you an idea of where it

happened we're just east of interstate 80 by the oakland airport. police have been going door to door asking neighbors what they saw or heard. we'll of course keep you updated on the police investigation but right now we don't know what the motive was here or if there is a suspect description. we did see some family members come out here. they were obviously quite emotional. they had said that they were the parents of the 20-year-old man and obviously just completely distraught. so we'll try to learn more information from you -- now this morning and bring it to you throughout the morning. we're live in oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. time 4:31. other news this morning, this one is good. good news for commuters. a tentative deal that averted an ac transit strike. claudine wong is joining us live with the agreement that still has the buses rolling on the roads this morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. here's some good news. ac transit buses are pulling up. people are ready to go back to work. how are you feeling this morning? that means certainly this deal

came at 11:00 last night. people waking up this morning wondering if their bus will be there. >> i feel final. it was just a little bit -- hey, we're here. >> reporter: were you worried? when did you get the word? did you start going through the chain of folks saying show up for work, we'll be running? >> i found out through the news probably like everybody else did. i was okay. we're going to go ahead and roll these buses. >> reporter: thank you so much. i appreciate it. this deal late last night, 11:00 last night. that's when it all came down. we were there as they came out of negotiations to let people know yes, buses will be running. everyone will be ready to go to work. let's talk about what got them that deal. they say they get a wage increase that rb phased over the next -- that will be phased over the next three years of the contract and they will be making contributions to health

care costs of $70, $140 and $180. these are little details about what really made it happen but certainly no doubt there's a lot of relief. >> it's been a hard negotiations period. we have been in negotiations for over five months. at times it seems that, you know, we weren't going to be able to get an agreement. but getting an agreement was always our goal. >> reporter: it took a long time. if you listened to what everyone said as they came out of the meeting, ktvu was there to just kind of gauge the reaction. there was a lot of relief but there's no doubt that it was a hard fought battle. when asked what did it, they said you just had to have the commitment to stay there. be there at the table and stay at the table. what's the result? you're looking live at the result. ac transit ready to go, ready to get to work, ready to pick riders up and certainly that has to be a relief for people who depend on ac transit this

morning to get where they need to go. if you were going to bed last night with some kind of uncertainty, you can wake up this morning with certainty that your ride will be there. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. time 4:33. now to our continuing coverage of the bart labor dispute. this morning bart management and labor union leaders will present their sides to a special board of inquiry in a public hearing. the hearing will take place at the state office building in downtown oakland. both sides will detail the remaining issues and they'll talk about how a bart strike or lockout would affect the public. the board will then report to the governor by the end of this week. governor jerry brown made declare a 60-day cooling off period to keep the bart trains rolling. this morning's hearing starts at 10:30 this morning and, yes, it is open to the public. again it will be held in the state office building, the state of california building, 1515 clay street in downtown oakland. ktvu will stream the hearing live on our channel 2 website

ktvu.com. we have breaking news in the south bay right now. san jose firefighters investigating three small grass fires. it started about 90 minutes ago near bailey avenue and highway 101. officials say the fire is contained but they still want to know how they started. we have a crew headed there now. we'll have a live report coming up at 5:00. new this morning the power is back on again for thousands of pge customers in can fran. equipment failure at a substation is blamed for knock be out power to more than 36,000 pge customers in the richmond and sunset districts shortly before midnight. in about -- then about 45 minutes afterwards, the power was restored. today family members and friends of a us inning oakland woman will be passing out flyers in hopes of finding her. 50-year-old sandra cogue was last seen sunday night when she

went to meet someone who said they found her dog. her dog was stolen a couple of months ago when her home was burglarized. she's a public defender, a single mother with a 15-year- old daughter. >> my sister was about her daughter and work. she was not somebody who went out late at night. >> her sister says someone recently tried to extort money from coke when they said they had her dog but did not. her work phone and cell phone have been found. one near emeryville. coke's car was found abandoned two miles from her home. time is 4:36. this morning a massive manhunt still under way for a man accused of abducting two children who are the subject of a statewide amber alert. police say the man set his home in san diego county on fire killing the children's mother

and unidentified child. authorities issued an amber alert for 16-year-old hanna anderson and her 8-year-old brother ethan. the family members think the child that was found in that burned out house is ethan anderson but that's not confirmed yet. the children's father is pleading for the safe return of his daughter. >> jim, i can't fathom what you were thinking. the damage is double. i'm begging you to let my daughter go. you've taken everything else. >> he may be driving a blue four-door nissan. here's dimaggio's photo. they think he may be headed to texas or canada. authorities say the children's parents are divorced. dimaggio was a family friend. new this morning, a massive fire has shut down kenya's main airport. that big fire gutted the

international arrivals area overnight the international airport in nairobi, kenya. two people were treated for smoke inhalation but they were not seriously hurt. officials say there's no immediate evidence of terrorism but that investigation goes on. some passengers say they did hear explosions before the fire. flights are being rerouted to mao. president obama waking up in southern california this morning. late other today he'll be going to visit with marines at camp pendleton but this morning he's due to take part in an online question and answer session about housing on the real estate website zillow. that half-hour online chat is moderated by zillow's c.e.o. as part of his swing through southern california, president obama was on the jay leno show last night. he talked about having lunch recently with hillary clinton.

lots of low clouds in place and plenty of drizzle. it's being reported pretty far inland. the low responsible for it is right off the coast keeping inland temps well below average. happening right now, demolition crews are tearing down the cleveland home where ariel castro held three young women captive for years. this is a live picture of the demolition. today's work comes less than a week after castro was sentenced. security is very tight to prevent souvenir hunters from actually taking pieces of the home which often has been called cleveland's house of horrors. mu details about two -- new details about two separate robbery sprees here in the bay area. the fbi just released photos after man they say robbed at least two banks in san francisco since june. they call him the up close bandit because of how clear his face is on the banks' security

video. the fbi is also searching for a group of men they're calling the high jumper bandit because they're known to jump over bank counters. investigators say they may be responsible for as many as five bank robberies in san francisco and millbray. the latest happened in san francisco. the men are armed and becoming more violent. time is 4:46. investigators searching for a second man now who may be tied to the deadly stabbing of a hardware store worker. they say daniel stone was starting his shift at annual ace hardware store sunday morning when someone walked in and stabbed him 17 times. investigators want to talk with the man who came into the store at the same time as the suspect. surveillance video shows the man arriving in a white car just ahead of the man believed to be agnew. >> we're hoping we may be able

to locate him and see whether or not he might have witnessed some of the interaction between mr. stone and the defendant. >> investigators say the deadly attack was a random act from a mentally unstable manual. they say the suspect told -- unstable man. they say the suspect told them he was on a mission. authorities are calling the national night out a success. >> last night having some fun out there. about 50 people gathered for a festive event on corwin court in san jose. they say it was an example of neighborhood law enforcement cooperation. they alerted members of the santa clara county's sheriff office about the graffiti problem in their area. some cited lack of police officers on the streets and they enrolled in a new social networking site called next door. in san francisco mcgruff the crime dog appeared at a national night out event in the

richmond district. he brought along police officers, a police horse and a dog. organizers of national night out estimated about 40 million people took part last night in 15,000 communities across the country. time is 4:48. the united states filed the first charges now in connection with last year's deadly attack on the benghazi consulate in libya. that attack last september killed four americans, including u.s. ambassador chris stevens. the federal officials say several suspects including a prominent militia leader in libya have been charged. but details of the charges have not been released. they're under seal. the investigation goes on. people living in palo alto are being told to lock their windows and doors. there have been at least six residential burglaries in the city in the past week and a half. the first one happened on july 26. most recent occurred on august 1. investigators say it appears the thieves are entering the homes through open windows and unlocked doors. sweden's job team are

gearing up for another race today after a very emotional day. yesterday the swedish team was back in the waters of the san francisco bay for the first time since the tragic death of a teammate three months ago. two-time olympic medalist andrew bart simpson was killed when the team's catamaran flipped over during a practice run in may. >> we wanted to be out there with andrew. we wanted him to be competing that first race with us. that wasn't unfortunately to be. the team lost yesterday's race. however, team members hope for a victory today when they compete in the second heat against the team from italy. right now it is 4:50. want to check in with sal for a look at the commute this morning. >> hello pam and dave. right now traffic is doing pretty well. if you are driving around the bay area, should be a pretty nice drive on 80 westbound coming in from vallejo but there is some mist. the windshield wipers may be
