[ shots fired ] >> now at noon shots fired during a police stand off in sunnyvale and neighbors say a man and his wife are dead. bart and its unions back at the bargaining table now trying to reach another agreement ahead of another strike on monday unless the governor steps in again. plus a man naked now in custody accused of breaking glass and shattering statutes at a bay area church. >> ktvu channel 2 news starts right now.

it is breaking news. >> breaking news out of sunnyvale, where two people are dead after a police stand off. robert honda is at the scene and joins us live to explain what happened. good afternoon, robert. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori, as you can imagine it has been a hectic morning in this neighborhood and they are still investigating the situation here that left two people dead. the stand off started after 8:00 this morning when the public safety dispatch center got a call from a man claiming he had killed someone, they quickly swarmed the neighborhood. investigators say they made numerous attempts to contact the man inside his home. now take a listen as officers did that just before the sound you will hear of loud rapid gunfire. >> come out with your hands up. >> that point the individual charged the officers with a weapon and the officers were forced to own open fire and shoot the individual. the individual was pronounced dead at the scene, in doing a protective sweep we did confirm another dead body inside the residence. >> neighbors we talked to say they believe the dead woman was his wife. they are still investigating and not confirmed the identities or what type of weapon the suspect had. we will have an update on ktvu.com and at 5:00. robert honda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> now to our continuing coverage on bart labor talks. we are just three days away from another possible bart strike. the two sides are back at the bargaining table after yesterday's inquiry hearing. claudine wong joins us live and sounds like there are new developments claudine. >> reporter: that's right,

tori, they both went in at about 10:00 this morning to start negotiations here watching things carefully, no movement yet. we do know the union negotiators went in with suitcases with enough cloths to last them if they stayed around the clock through sunday. the governor said he would call a 60 day cooling-off period if there is no deal by then but there is still the hope he won't have to. before the president sat down at the bargaining table this morning she said something we have not heard from a while. >> i know it is something doable. i know based on the numbers we have been presented by the district and the information we put fort the deal is doable and we can get it done by sunday if both parties commit to it. >> that is a different tone than what we heard at yesterday's governor's hearing but she said it appears they

concrete that will firmly strap the bridge roadways to their pilings. those broken bolts led to a delay of the scheduled labor day weekend opening. the bridge is now scheduled to open in december. new at noon san mateo congresswoman jackie spear is pushing for a new new alert system she says might have prevented the ashanna plane crash, the says the technology already exists and wants it installed on all commercial planes. >> when the alert signals to a pilot that they are traveling at too low airspeed they have at best a few seconds to react. it is vital that planes have alerts that are instantly recognizable -- >> the house approved spear's measure that would order the faa to study the low airspeed alert but it is part of a larger transportation bill that has not yet been passed. vallejo police are asking for your help identifying two

men posing as utility workers and robbing local businesses. now they have also robbed a family in their home. we spoke with people who saw the robbers and found out about their disguise. >> they could have got me all right. i was alone. >> people who live on fear el street are on edge after two men posing as pg&e workers bound a man, woman and six-year- old girl with duct tape in their home yesterday morning. witnesses who saw the two men say they wore hard hats carried tablets and wore bright safety vests, one neighbor i spoke with said she saw them and they fooled her. >> if they looked suspicious i am calling the police. so they did they job, whatever they did they did. they good at it because they fooled me and i know a pg and e man. >> police say they claimed to be investigating a gas leak and

talked their way in the home. >> they fanned working on a wall unit. >> they pistol whipped the man and robbed them and drove away in a possibly cadillac escalade. >> generally there will be a utility truck parked in front of the residence. >> they say they are likely the same robbers who hit those places, those happened within the last two weeks and they wore the same disguise. her daughter lives in the neighborhood. she came by this morning to check on her. >> could you imagine this happening to yourself. >> i am kind of nosey, no, because i would want an id, where is your truck. >> that is exactly what police want people to do, take a moment to be skeptical and even call the utility company to check if there is work being done in your neighborhood. in vallejo, ktvu channel 2

news. >> police gave us a detailed suspect description today. 1 map is believed to be african american in his early 30 has, 6'0," weighs 200 pounds with scruffy facial hair. the other described as hispanic, also early 30s, 5'9," weighing 150 pounds, witnesses say they drove away in a gold suv. the san francisco sheriff's department is joining a program designed to give crime victims a greater sense of security and safety. it allows them to be notified when an offender has been released from jail or moved to another jail. it is a free and anonymous service that lets the crime victims get phone and e-mail notifications. san francisco is joining a growing list of sheriff's departments across the state that use this program. san francisco leaderses are hoping a gun buy-back will help get weapons off the streets today's event is scheduled

it won't break their spirit. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2news. >> a gas leak there has been capped, construction crews hit a line there after 4:30 this morning. streets there were closed until 9:00 this morning when crews capped the line. about 20 businesses had to delay opening and pedestrians and cars were kept out of the area. the highway patrol has shut down lanes of highway 101 in both directions in sonoma county because of power lines hanging too low over the freeway. the problem is near the shiloh road off-ramp in windsor, a small fire was reported next to the freeway, only one lane of traffic is open in each direction right now while crews deal with the situation. more than a dozen homes burned to the ground and several people injured as the raging wildfire in southern california continues to burn out of control. here in the bay area still

the sap daig 82 area has been extended to oregon and washington, investigators say hannah anderson was kidnapped by 40-year-old james dimaggio, he was a close friend of the family and is also suspected of killing hannah's mother and possibly her eight-year-old brother. a friend of the missing girl says in recent months he told her he had a crush on her and made other comments that the friend says made hannah feel creeped out. >> this gentleman that was a friend of ours for a long time has taken everything. >> the body of her mother was found in the ashes of dimaggio's home along with the body of a boy believed to be her brother and they believe they are heading toward canada. the parents of them are

suing them. she was crushed to death by a tree. the suit claims negligence by pg&e and the arborist. it names them because they were responsible for inspecting it and failed to discover it had become weak. they are not commenting on the suit. a controversial gentleman's club is set to open today there. it is a bikini bar surrounded by restaurants and condos and critics are concerned the adult entertainment club could have a negative impact on crime in the area. it is the beginning of the end. we are now less than six hours away from the 49ers first preseason game, ahead of their lost season at the stick. as claudine wong explains fans attending tonight's game are going to be facing new security measures and serious limitations about what they can and cannot bring into the

wreck. >>wind driven wildfire continues to burn out of control this noontime in southern california, the so- called silver fire is raging south of banning and fueled by very dry conditions. it started yesterday afternoon and has already scorched 10,000 acres. officials say at least 15 structures burned, many homes, 1500 people have been told to evacuate communities in the area. >> it was so smoky, you could not see a whole lot. we did see flames that -- it came down here so fast. >> san mateo and santa cruz counties are sending resources to help battle the flames. we just checked with cal fire for an update and so far the fire is still only 10% contained. >> dare i say it is almost mostly sunny, partly sunny mostly sunny but there are definitely breaks in the fog especially by the coast. still that low cloud deck

hanging on. man it was tough this morning, lots of reports of drizzle, especially san francisco emeryville, berkeley, lots and sausalito and a couple of people say it was down right raining here. well the low coming in is starting to chew up fog plus inland temperatures cool so not supporting it so a mix of sun and clouds are another way to say partly sunny, partly cloudy, clouds and north building up there, so far for us not yet but may later on, mostly sunny, partly cloudy but cooler temperatures, below average temperatures the big news is this low which is not going anywhere until sunday. it will sit here and rotate around and could pop up showers or thunder showers just about anywhere, tomorrow is probably a better opportunity than today but elevated fire danger. northeast california where there is already development taking place from reno north and northern mountains but going to include mendocino county and lake county.

73 fairfield, livermore 71, san jose 70 and every one is clear and only a 5 or six degree difference which is unusual but the reason is that low and it has given us a big fog bank and drizzle, that will be back late tonight and tomorrow but that rain increasing in intensity again from reno north so if you are in tahoe and truckee you can see the clouds developing but it is close and today, tomorrow and probable saturday northern california in line for showers, partly sunny, fog near the coast but breaks compared to the last couple of days, afternoon clouds may be building up but more towards the north, so northern sonoma county, and those counties and mendocino, 60s and 70s there, you get a low cloud deck that is all you need to keep temperatures well below average but it looks after probably saturday temperatures will warm up, getting near average, today, tomorrow, tomorrow tory maybe a better opportunity of

stocks climbing after opening higher falling back and rebounding, miners and other companies that make basic materials surnlgd after news that china's trade rebounded in july signaling the end of a six month slow down for the world's second largest economy, the dow is up 27, the nasdaq up 15 and the s&p up six. the number of first time claims for jobless benefits is up but only by 5000 according to new numbers out from the labor department today. 333,000 americans filed first time unemployment claims last week, but that is lower than what economists had forecast and still close to the five year low the experts say that is an indication of an improvement in the labor market. there was a long line outside target's job fair in alameda this morning. >> go right ahead. right into the table in front of you. >> people were there to apply for 300 jobs at target's new
