the numbers up a degree or two in some cases. waking up with the low clouds, patchy drizzle, and breezy through the delta once again with winds gusting 30 miles per hour through fairfield, the on shore breeze will be with us. temperatures low 60s along the coastline. low 80s for inland cities. i'll have a detailed tour of the afternoon highs and your weekend outlook coming up. rose mary, good morning, san mateo bridge traffic looks good here as you see driving across the high-rise. no major problems there, and the morning commute is looking good on the golden gate bridge heading south. let's go back to the desk. we are following developing news in vallejo where police will continue the search for a missing woman this morning. what police are saying about the search and the person of interest in this case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, more people have arrived on scene this morning. the search crews are getting ready to search eugene -- again

at 8:00. 30 to 40 people are expected. k-9 unit are on scene. they will likely begin the search before everybody else. dogs can sniff out the area before people walk over it. i'm told the search area is vast. they won't give me a specific area of focus, but it does include the fairgrounds, and a rural area near six flags discovery kingdom. oakland police detectives called for the search around 6 last night. they are looking for 50-year- old sand are coch who has been missing since sunday. randy alana has convictions for rape and kidnapping and is being held on parole violation. she dated him briefly 20 years ago. law enforcement sources tell us he was seen on surveillance video with coch's car and

credit cards and not sure if he directed them to the search location or why they're here. >> it was deemed we should start tonight to get it started. that's a decision that was made with the oakland investigators as well as our search and rescue personnel. >> crews are not telling us the connection. they are saying that last night's search did not turn up any evidence related to him. that's why we're here. the search may include divers since there are several lakes in the area. again, crews beginning to show up on scene today and will kick off their search again this morning in about an hour. live near vallejo, katie utehs, ktvu news. 7:04. deputies are searching for an inmate who walked away from a work crew. the crew was working late wednesday night at the sonoma county fair grounds in santa rosa. michael edward green was in a minimum security section of the county jail. he had been convicted on drug,

burglary and theft charges. police investigating the shooting of three people just hours ago this morning: ktvu's janine de la vega is at the scene to tell us how police found out about this. >> reporter: dave, police here are on the scene trying to identify the suspect who is responsible for injuring three people here. it happened here at the san jose apartments. you can see there are officers inside collecting evidence because it happened there somewhere in the grassy area. there is near cunningham avenue and lanai on the east side. people who live in the apartment complex heard five to six gun shots ring out and soon after, three people walked into two different local hospitals with injuries. police say it was two men and one woman that suffered gunshot wounds in the leg, buttocks and stomach. and he connected those two incidents together, and they

believe it all happened at the complex. the injuries are nonlife threatening. at this point police are treating this as an assault with a deadly weapon. investigators determined that it happened near the basketball courts at the apartments. officers don't know if it's gang related yet. >> the neighborhood is close to one of the hot spots and it's relatively safe. it's kind of a surprise at this time of night, or morning and the day of the week. >> reporter: officers are interviewing witnesses at the two local hospitals to see if they can gather enough to track down a suspect. they say some seem hesitant to speak, but they are work to go get to the bottom of this, and at this point they don't have a motive in this case but sure would like to hear from anybody that has information on this. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. skyline college in san san

bruno will be open today. a man with a rifle was headed to campus yesterday afternoon. no one suspicious was found. the skyline college campus is near a jail facility. classes were canceled and skyline college will be open today. it is 7:06. menlomenlo park police may have license plate readers in their parole cars. the council members say the city first needs to agree on a policy for how long data will be stored. police requested the license plate readers after an increase in crime in the bell haven neighborhood. parking parole officer ins san francisco are now taking pictures as they hand out traffic tickets. muni has issued an order that they take photos of most traffic violations when they write tickets in san francisco. the infractions include blocking driveways, parking on sidewalks and violating

construction zone parking lots. those photos will be used as evidence against anyone who wants to fight a ticket court. they say a picture is worth a thousand words. careful. sal, friday morning, everybody behaving at the toll plaza. >> it's better than it was the last few days. the worst day we had was monday and the best day we're having is friday. that just seems right, doesn't it. westbound right now, a small delay at the toll plaza with no major problems once on the bridge. we haven't had any stalled vehicles on that upper deck, a minor accident on the lower deck which was moved to treasure island. moving along, interstate 80, the traffic looks good, another reminder, the raiders will have an exhibition game, a lot of people coming for the game and there's going to be traffic in the area. westbound 580, we had an earlier crash in livermore valley, and the traffic is just a little slow trying to clear

out from that. 7:08. let's go to rose mary. waking up with gray skies, mostly sunny away from the coast and temperatures slightly warmer than what we have seen lately. giving a peek at the satellite and radar. it will continue to move north as we get into the weekend and as it does, it will allow our temperatures to rebound just a bit. this morning and at this hour, you can see the circulation ride around that low, continue to go push the low clouds in, the on shore breeze, a little bit of a lift there, providing a patchy drizzle around the bay area. you may have windshield wipers going. and thunderstorms over the northwest corner of california, all the way down to clear lake. for today, a red flag warning in place because of those thunderstorms and the possibility of lightning starting new fires. that's what we're seeing. here at home, gray skies and temperatures will begin to warm today and continue as we get into the weekend. there's also a wave, if you look right there on that satellite, do you see it, here

requested by congress. and u.s. researchers say they have successfully tested a malaria vaccine. it's carried by mosquitoes and kills about 1 million people a year. more than 30 volunteers received several dozes of the vaccine produced with a weakened form of malaria. it protected most of the patients. they add it requires more extensive testing, though, before it can be used worldwide. time is 7:12. the group who bought the second winning ticket in the $448 million powerball jackpot has come forward. we'll tell you how much money each one will get. was it justified or a political snub. condoleezza rice comments on the president's decision to skip a face to face meeting with his russian counter part.

it's a gloomy start to the day. afternoon highs will be slightly warmer for friday, and as we get into the weekend, a minor warming trend continues. >> time now 7:14. american diplomats have been evacuated from the u.s. consulate in pakistan and american travelers are being warned, stay away from there. kyla campbell reports from the washington d.c. news room. this is the latest in a string of threats from al key -- al- qaeda. >> reporter: the majority of workers were evacuated from the consulate either to the capitol city or out of the country all together. the state department also says u.s. citizens should not travel to pakistan. there are growing concerns al- qaeda militants could use a new generation of liquid explosives and it would make their clothing flammable but not detectable by security measures

and that's part of the terror threat earlier this week that closed u.s. embassies. we don't know if the pakistan evacuation is related to the previous threat. we expect to learn more in the coming hours. secretary to have state john kerry is meeting with russian officials this hour. reporters are set up to ask him questions. we don't know if he'll be taking them. and president barack obama has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon. live in washington, kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. 7:16. former nsa contractor edward snowden may be living in a luxury townhouse in a gated community outside moscow. according to a russian newspaper, snowden could be staying in this high security development. it's surrounded by thick walls and bashed wire. reportedly the development has a golf course and a yacht club. the russian government has not said publicly where snowden is living after granting him asylum for one year. and former secretary of state condoleezza rice says she

supports president obama's decision to cancel a meeting with russian president sad mere put -- vladimir putin last month after what she called russia's slap in the face to u.s. when they gave asylum to snowden. rice is an expert on russia and is a political science professor at stanford university. a man accused of a deadly shooting rampage is a former member of an all male dance team for the dallas mavericks. he is accused of killing four people including his estranged wife and wounded four mother, including several children. he was a member of the mav's maniacs between 2002 and 2009. they entertain the fans at dallas mavericks home games. meantime, a florida man

promising to stop sales. they are concerned about preserving the historic character of the building. the post office plans to sell the building but the postmaster general says the space there, while it's no longer needed, he added his agency might be interested in renting back part of the old building. civil rights lawyers filed a class action lawsuit against contra costa policy of keeping juvenile teenageers in solitary confinement. some are kept in there for months at a time and are denied education and some get solitary confinement for swearing and talking back. as many as 88,000 americans are expected to join a new program this year that may speed up screenings at airports. the precheck programs will give members separate security lines. those travelers will not have to take off their shoes, coats

it is 7:23 a. southern california police chase came to an abrupt end when a carjacking suspect lost control and his van flipped over. it happened last night in san fernando. police say the suspect blew through several red lights before rolling the van into a wash area. the suspect refused to come out of the van for about 20 minutes but did eventually surrender. time is 7:23.

new this morning, now we know who holds that second winning ticket in the $448 million powerball jackpot, a group of 16 coworkers bought the winning ticket at this acme market in little harbor new jersey in atlantic city. they work at a maintenance garage. they chose to take the lump sum and will split a prize of $86 million. so they'll each get 5.3 million bucks and that's before taxes. now, their boss who did not get in on the pool says it couldn't happen to better people. >> they were here yesterday at work. they knew they won the lottery and they were here. that tells you a lot about who they are. >> the third winning ticket was sold in new jersey, at a super market in south brunswick. that winner has not come forward yet. at 45-year-old engineer in minnesota was the first to claim his share of the jackpot. in california, 9 second

place winners, who won $289,000 each. california only started selling powerball tickets just a couple of months ago, but lottery officials say it's already beating the sales expectations and that's good news for california schools which were originally promised about 50 million in additional revenue from powerball. the lottery officials say the higher ticket sales mean the schools will get roughly double that amount. 7:25. breaking news from paris, one of the most famous landmarks in the world has just been evacuated. ritters is reporting that the eiffle tower is evacuated because of a bomb threat. again, it is evacuated today in paris because of a bomb threat. and we go now to sal. not good news since there are

it is 7:30 now to our continuing coverage of the b.a.r.t. labor dispute. negotiations resume at 10 this morning in the latest contract talks between b.a.r.t. management and unions. why this could be another tense long weekend for bay area commuters. good morning brian. >> yeah, no question about that, i mean, if you do use b.a.r.t. on a regular basis, you may want to spend this weekend like you have previous weekends making plans to make arrangements because b.a.r.t. may go on strike this weekend. we'll wait and see. what we're hearing is management and unions remain far apart on the key critical issues, salary, pension and health benefits. is there a glimmer of hope. we'll have to wait and see. they're hashing things out today and this weekend. >> at the end of the day, we're still very apart on the main economic proposals. we want to see movement this weekend. hopefully it can happen by

sunday night. i know that based on the numbers we have been printed by the district and the information that we have put forth that the deal is doable and we can get it done by sunday. if both parties commit to the real information. >> that real information is actually something that they kind of disagree on. b.a.r.t. management says they are a hundred million dollars apart, reaching the deal while the unions say they are closer to 50 to $60 million apart. and negotiations resume at 10:00 this morning. b.a.r.t. workers are ready to issue a strike notice later today if they don't see progress in the negotiations. even still, even if both sides can't reach an agreement, can b.a.r.t. trains continue to run. it depends on the governor appointed panel with the labor dispute and the governor itself. the board of inquiry, who's been here this week has until sunday night just hours before the latest strike deadline to submit a report to the governor, and based on that report, governor brown could ask a judge to issue a 60 day cooling off period.

her in the last several days to please come forward immediately. >> family members have posted a $100,000 reward for information that helps police find sandra. tips can be called in anonymously to a hot line or you can even e-mail it. a man suspected of kidnapping two children, triggering an amber alert in four states, mexico and canada, may have rigged his car with explosives. police say james lee demaggio may have abandoned his blue nissan versa after setting a trap. police are asking anyone who think they may have spotted demaggio or his car to stay away from the vehicle and call 911. he is suspected of starting a fire in san diego county at his home that killed hannah and ethan anderson's mother and an unidentified child. police say they have received a lot of leads, but there are no

confirmed sightings of demaggio. a backlog has left customers waiting weeks for orders and trucks idling for hours. the oakland tribune reports port officials are keeping the saa terminal complex open for additional hours to alleviate the backlog. they disagree on the cause of the backlog. union officials say saa has taken two berths out of operation and port officials blame recent labor stoppages. time is 7:35. a san jose nonprofit is making sure children from low income families will have new backpacks for the new school year. volunteer ifs sacred heart community service are giving free backpacks to more than 2400 children today. you're looking at video now of the preparations underway early this morning. the kids will also be able to stock up on school supplies as well. results from california star testing show the scores for bay area schools slipped a bit this

u.s. stocks moving between gains and losses this morning. trading volume is really light, typical of an august friday, little economic news to move the market. taking look at the big board, the dow currently down, and the nasdaq up slightly and s&p down 2. just checking right now, gap stock is down over 5% this morning. investors actually boosted the price in premarket trading

after yesterday's report that sales were up. the san francisco clothing retailer, said revenue jumped 8 personality. the company says stronger sales of the gap stores helped offset a drop in banana republic and old navy stores. and tesla hit an all time high yesterday. it is up about 1% after a 14% increase to top $153 yesterday. right now it's at 155. tesla had a surprisingly positive earnings report after wednesday's closing bell. time now, 7:35, happening now, unhappy students are taking a very important test this morning. as pam cook reports in the news room, the reason they're upset is more than just because they're taking a test, right. >> yes, it is. the problem is they are retaking these tests in a legal battle over that continues. the students are at mills high school in the san mateo school district. right now about 200 of them we

understand are retaking those advanced placement tests. now, as we've been reporting the students originally took the tests back this may, but the college board invalidated their scores after it said the students were seated too closely together. >> it does bother me because it feels like the big businesses such as college sport and ets have been treating the students wrong when they're supposed to be serving us as a company. >> now, the board says it's not accusing the students of cheating but they may have had an unfair advantage over the other students taking the test across the country. the students retaking the test this morning. there are other ap tests, some of the other subjects will be tested on monday. the students signed up to retake, despite the fact that they are still fighting this matter in court. in fact, the students were protesting outside the courthouse in redwood city yesterday. we'll talk more about the actions the students are take

arrived on scene. they are in their morning briefing right now, which includes oakland police investigators. we hope to get an update from them shortly after that briefing. i can tell you the k-9 crews arrived first and will set out before the 30 to 40 people expected to take part in today's search for 50-year-old sandra coke who has been missing since sunday. multiple counties are involved in the search that oakland police called for. the overnight search did not net them any evidence. again, they're looking in a rural area near six flags discovery kingdom and about a 3- mile area that includes the solano county fairgrounds. they're not saying why they're searching this area. it follows the arrest of a man police are calling a person of interest, randy alana is being held on parole violations. he has previous convictions for kidnapping and rape. she dated alana twenty years

the scene with the latest on the search for a suspect. good morning. >> reporter: police have left the scene here, but officers are now at the hospital interviewing witnesses and the victims themselves. it happened here at the san jose apartments. this is on cunningham avenue close to a patch of grass that you see right there behind me. people who live in the apartment complex heard 5 to 6 gun shots ring out just after 4 this morning. soon after, 3 people walked into two different local hospitals and police were then able to determine that those incidents were connected. two men and one woman suffered grounds in the leg, the buttocks and the stomach. they are nonlife threatening injuries. police are treating this case as an assault with a deadly weapon. investigators determined that it happened near the basketball courts in the apartment complex. officers say they do not know yet if it's gang related but neighbors say shootings haven't happened here in a long time. >> i'm really upset because

i'll take those now. >> how are you going to search. >> we have boats. we do have boats in route as well as one boat on scene from our marine patrol at the solano county sheriff's office. we're going to use dogs. they have specially trained dogs that can search lakes and we're going to utilize those this morning. >> have you narrowed it or different aspects. >> obviously the teams have changed. people got tired, so we discontinued last night about 2:00 a.m. we're starting back up. we will start at 8. which it sounds like they did get started about 8. it is going to change the dynamics, over the time and what we have searched versus what we haven't searched. it's changed and evolving as we go. we're going to adapt and do whatever we need to do to make sure we have covered the ground within the search area as well as done everything we can to assist the oakland police department in finding mrs. coke.

hope that this weekend will be it. the negotiations begin at 10:00 this morning. the good news from hearing from both sides is that they are eager to get back to the negotiating table. the problem, though, is that both sides remain far apart on salary, pension, health benefits and safety issues. both sides plentied their cases in front of the governor's board of inquiry, and techedly the board has until sunday -- technically the board has until sunday night to issue to governor brown and may issue a 60 day cooling off period and that would allow the b.a.r.t. trains to continue to run if it is granted. b.a.r.t.'s board met yesterday and they are committed to reaching an agreement by sunday if not sooner. they hope a cooling off period won't be needed. that sentiment was echoed by union leaders who say a cooling off period would detract progress made at the negotiating table. both sides say they are eager

it happened about 4:00 this morning. two men and one woman were shot. police say there are no suspects right now. a man suspected of kidnapping two children triggering an amber alert in four states, mexico and canada. he may have booby trapped his car. if you see a car resembling james demaggio's blue nissan call 911. police are searching a 3 square mile area in vallejo for a missing oakland woman, sandra coke after identifying a person of interest in this case. ktvu's katie utehs is live out there to tell us what police said. we were watching in a live news conference. give us more details. >> reporter: the conference wrapped up 10 minutes ago. police tell us at this point they're still calling it a missing person's case, but homicide detectives have been on scene as well. they're searching for sandra coke's shoes, clothing or even evidence of a crime scene here

at the solano county fairgrounds. search crews are on scene this morning. there are 10 to 15 people on the ground but they are expecting 30 to 40 people to take part in today's search for 50-year-old sandra coke. she has been missing since sunday. multiple counties are involved in the search that oakland police called for around 6 last night. the overnight search did not net evidence but they hope to pick up where they left off in the daylight. they're not saying why they're serging this area. but it follows the arrest of a man police are calling a person of interest. 56-year-old randy alana is being held on parole violations. he has a previous conviction for kidnap and rape. he dated alana about 20 years ago and law enforcement sources also tell us they have surveillance footage of alana putting gas in coke's car using her credit card. the oakland police department confirmed for us this morning that he is the last person to be seen with coke on sunday night. however, i did ask what the

daylight hours and hope to find evidence that helps them find sandra coke. katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. happening ,000 they should be enjoying their last summer before heading off to college. 200 students in san mateo county are retaking their advanced place of advance -- placement tests and pam cook is in the news room. >> a court hearing was canceled this week in redwood city over the test taking controversy that we have been following at mills high school in san mateo county. the student web site says it all, why we need our scores back.com. this morning, about 200 students from mills high school are retaking advanced placement tests even though most of them have graduated and are already enrolled in the colleges for the fall. the problem is the college board invalidated their scores after it said the students were seated too closely together when they took the original test back in may. some students say they won't

retake them as they wait for the court case. one student tells us, this is like running a marathon after taking three months off from training. >> of course we're going to be able to run. but we're not going to be able to run as fast. and we're not going to be able to win compared to the rest of the world and this is unfair because we are innocent. >> now, as far as the court case, it was canceled this week as the college board and educational testing service voiced concerns that it would be an unfair trial here in california. and requested a move to federal court. a spokesperson for the educational testing service says the company is reviewing the lawsuit and could not comment. now, he says at this point the focus is to make sure the students are able to retest and "earn valid ap exam scores that can be reported to colleges and universities ." now, according to daily journal, the students are retesting for free in english, literature, and physics.

low income families have access to backpacks and school supplies. good morning. >> good morning, you know, school starts very soon for some as little as a week or two weeks from now. we're here at sacred heart community services. i want you to look around at tons of backpacks for boys and girlers. these are for kindergarten up to 12th graders girls and boys who come from low income families and these are generously donated. you can see there's scissors and coy yans -- crayons and backpacks and again, generously donated for people from low income families. and we're joined now by jaye paco who's with community heart services. you thought with the economy improving you weren't going to get a lot of people. that wasn't the case. it's record numbers you're seeing right. >> we have a record number of people coming in. we thought it actually was going to be a quieter year.

people are getting jobs now. definitely being able to place people. what we're finding is people are still underemployed or with lower wages. there's pressure on the family budgets and rents and things going up, it makes it so that it's hard to buy the school supplies that they need. >> and one of the things is that this is about a confidence booster for kids, they really look to see if they have like an old backpack and don't feel confident if they don't have all that. >> this program is about kids succeeding in school and has to start with the first day. there they are, lining up, ready to go into the classroom and if they're thinking about what they don't have, they're not going to be focused on studying that first day. by the community coming together, make sure all the right tools are there, they're thinking about learning that moment rather than learning about something else. >> reporter: thank you so much jay from sacred heart community services and they're going to let the parents and children
