. and breaking news, a massive manhunt that stretched from right here in california to idaho has come to an end. just minutes ago, we learned the suspect in the amber alert case has been killed and the teenage girl he abducted is safe. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken pritchett in for ken wane. 40-year-old james dimaggio was located in a remote wilderness area near cascade, idaho. officers respondented him, along with 16-year-old kidnap victim hannah anderson from the air at their camp site. this afternoon, s.w.a.t. teams went in and shot dimaggio after a confrontation. it is not clear if dimaggio was armed. hannah anderson is being taken to a hospital to be checked out. >> we now want to go live to idaho, where a news conference is under way, giving us the latest information on this amber alert case. let's take a listen.

>> hannah anderson is okay. we're told she has been brought now and is on her way to the hospital. [ no audio ] >> the press conference now, can't hear the audio at this point from the press conference. we'll get the latest and have it at 10:00. members of a san francisco fbi s.w.a.t. team were among the 250 officers who scoured the idaho wilderness, looking for dimaggio. he is suspected of killing hannah's mother, christina anderson and her 8-year-old brother, ethan. their bodies were found in dimaggio's burning home on sunday. we are expecting to get late details, more from this news conference. we can see it here from idaho. we'll bring it to you at 10:00. now to our continuing coverage of bart labor talks, and while commuters won't have to worry about a monday strike, today, the pressure is on for both sides to make a deal. if an agreement is not made by tomorrow morning, governor brown says he will seek a 60-

day cooling off period from a judge at a special court hearing in san francisco. >> ktvu's john sasaki joins us from the cal trans building. any update, john? >> reporter: not much, really. but into tonight, the two sides still holed up here, still trying to reach a deal. bart riders were relieved that no strike happened this week. looks like no strike will happen starting on monday, which is why this state- mandated sunday inquiry is set to expire. tomorrow morning, the governor is asking a judge in san francisco for that 60-day cooling off period. the bad news was not well received by the unions, because they want to work out a deal by the weekend and not let this stretch into september or october. one union representative said this afternoon they are confident they can bridge the gap with management, which still stands at about $14 million a year. >> we want to get a deal. sometimes when those things happen and you're given more

time, you kind of take your foot off the gas. we're ready to put it all the way to the floor and get the job done. we want the deal done today. >> reporter: i have been texting with bart spokesman rick rice and he said he would be available for an interview if there is anything to report. that has not happened. the lead negotiate for bart, mr. huck, came out and said they have been making progress. the hearing tomorrow morning in san francisco starts at 9:00 a.m. live in oakland, john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2news. more details on the proposals by both sides. bart has offered a 9% raise over four years compared to the union's 15% over three years. bart would have employees contribute 2% to their pensions in the first year, with increases after that. the unions want a net 0.5% contribution after a separate raise. and bart would cap its health insurance contribution to basic plans, while the union wants to limit employee contributions to

contained. it has burned 19,000 acres and at least 26 homes have been destroyed since this fire began back on wednesday. residents are getting their first look at their losses, after some of the evacuation orders were finally lifted last night. >> this is the first time i've been here since this happened, since i have was flying out of here three days ago. and it was pretty devastating. >> more than 2000 firefighters are on the fire lines right now. calfire officials say 71,000 acres have burned across the state this year. that is nearly twice as many as this time last year, with the height of the fire season still to come. as students and parents prepare to go back to school, emergency officials in the east bay are getting ready in a different way. just take a look. this is san leandro high school. today, it looked like a war zone, but it was all a drill to make sure students are safe in the event of a terrible

situation. ktvu's anne ruben watched it all happen. she joins us live now with more. >> reporter: well, in this case, the scenario involved two roving gunmen and about a dozen pretend victims, but police and paramedics didn't know what they were up against until they got here. >> shots fired at san leandro high school. >> reporter: first responders rush in as gunfire rings out. while the gunmen here aren't real, the response is, and every second counts. >> if we were to stage basically every shot could potentially be a life. >> reporter: school shootings like at sandy hook have changed how police and paramedics act. >> third floor, we have information the shooter is up there. >> reporter: now, they don't wait outside for s.w.a.t. teams to arrive. it's often patrol units heading in first. >> we're moving quicker. we're moving in, maybe a more raw virp and we're doing it together. >> reporter: that's why they say training is more important than ever. in fact, san leandro in alameda

and reporters. just look for the back-to- school link near the top of the home page. protesters outside the main berkeley post office sent a message today to those who want to sell the historic building. >> two dozen demonstrators have been camping out at the post office for nearly two weeks now. they are trying to halt the planned sale of the 100-year- old building, with its depression-era mural created by an artist who also worked on the coit tower. >> they are trying to sell it off. trying to sell this one off, because it's an historic building with a lot of value in a downtown area. big money. ♪ >> the postal service says it doesn't need the whole space, but hopes to rent that part of the building to continue as a post office. happening now -- [ crowd noise ] >> the outside concert in san francisco, thrilling fans for a second day.

jurassic five entertained the crowd at golden gate park. more than 25 acts are performing today on multiple stages. tomorrow's lineup includes hall & oats, willie nelson & family, and the red hot chili peppers. sailors on san francisco bay today got an up-close look at the america's cup team won the louis vuitton cup. their opponents from sweden looked strong early in the race, but could not hang on to score a win in the best of seven series. they will meet team new zealand in the cup finals set to start next saturday. the winner of those races goes on to the america's cup, facing oracle team usa starting september 2. in the north bay, police investigated a pretty unusual accident involving a runaway horse and buggy. take a look now. petaluma police say a man was giving an 11-year-old girl a buggy ride as part of a family gathering on east washington way. the horse got spooked and took

off running. when the carriage hit a street sign, the driver was thrown off, loafing the girl alone in the back of the buggy. the driver of a white pickup truck stopped to help and as the horse ran past, the carriage hit the front of the truck. the girl had minor injuries from the crash. the horse was caught not far away. we have a happy follow-up story now to one we first brought you last night about a partially paralyzed dog whose wheelchair was stolen in richmond. >> thank you so much! thank you so much! >> good samaritan sandra gordon of san francisco donated a doggie wheelchair today to the family. gordon lost her own dog earlier this week to a spinal cord disease. after she saw the story last night about the theft, she felt giving mason's wheelchair to the family was the right thing to do. they said the two dogs were so similar that most of the settings on the device didn't have to be changed. . it's not the pirates of the caribbean, but a gun buyback in oakland. how residents and the police feel this will help make the

us this event gave some people peace of mind. >> reporter: oh case for youth was the site of a gun buyback today. everyone came armed. this gun buyback program offered $100 for each gun, $200 if it was an assault weapon. >> my husband's cousin gave it to him a long time ago. my husband died. i don't need them, just want to get rid of them. >> reporter: accidental shootings in the home are a big concern. >> it would take the opportunity away for my child to hurt anyone or anyone in my house to hurt anyone. >> reporter: most of the youth volunteers know all too well the impact of gun violence. >> i have at least 10 friends in a wheelchair right now. >> because of gun violence? >> yes. >> reporter: police recovered dozens of handguns, which are often used in crimes, but perhaps the prize today goes for this ak-47, which is a weapon of choice for gangsters. >> seeing people that you love die, it's crazy. >> reporter: the city has recently been rocked by high profile killings, including just three days ago when a man

and his baby son were shot to death as they slept in an east oakland home. >> shouldn't be 13-year-olds, 15-year-olds shooting each other. that shouldn't be happening. there's something wrong. they are not getting the guns from nowhere. i think this gun buyback is good. >> reporter: not everyone was as careful with their firearms as they could have been. an officer examined this gun, which turned out-- >> whoa. >> reporter: -- to be loaded. all told, youth uprising gave out $10,000 for nearly 100 guns, now no longer around for criminals to steal or otherwise obtain. in oakland, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2news. pg&e held events in concord and east palo alto to get the word out about how important it is to look before you dig. the majority of accidents happen when people fail to call for power or gas lines. that number is 811.

>> either contractors or homeowners start a digging project without calling us to have the lines marked. it's important to call 811, to help avoid damage to property and potential injury or even death. >> pg&e says on average, an underground utility line is damaged every 3 minutes during a digging project in the united states. activist and friends rallied today to support a long- time san francisco resident, now threatened with eviction. the rally at the tenant's union on cap street featured renter jeremy michael who as aids. he's lived in his rent- controlled apartment in the castro for 17 years. last september, michael was served with a so-called ellis act eviction, giving him a year to move out as his building is converted to a house. >> for me to move to any other place, i wouldn't be able to afford to stay in the city. i'm pretty much fighting to stay in my rent-controlled apartment and to stay close to my doctors who have kept me

alive this long. >> michael says the state law is being used to evict the elderly as well. one of the new owners of the building reportedly said he made an offer to buy out michael. squash, cucumbers, kale. >> today, occupy the farm protesters returned to a disputed stretch of uc berkeley land, this time by invitation. 40 people are planting in an experiment in urban farming. protesters have been trying to stop planned development on this part of the property. supporters of today's project hope it will help grow a better relationship between the university and the community. president obama today told disabled veterans that the veterans administration is finally speeding up its response to claims. >> after years when the backlog kept growing, finally the backlog is shrinking. in the last five months alone, it's down nearly 20%. we're turning the tide. >> mr. obama spoke at the

annual disabled veterans convention in orlando. the va reports the average wait time on disability claims is more than 270 days. today, the white house also announced an action plan to reduce soldier suicides and boost treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and brain injuries. in colorado, a mudslide has claimed at least one life in an area burned in last year's waldo canyon wildfire. here, you can see mud and water overflowing the highway in manitou springs near colorado springs. officials say a man's body was found beneath the debris, covering the road. authorities are looking for three people reported missing in the area. heavy rain last night triggered those flash floods. >> such devastation in colorado. pretty nice though, here in the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo. nice again tomorrow? >> yeah, in fact a little warmer. over the past few days, we've been talking about a cooling trend. things are beginning to change a little bit for the second half of the weekend and into next week. as far as temperatures from this afternoon, they range from

the cool 60s with patchy fog for pacifica, 70s around the bay. temperatures inland, in the low to mid-80s. right now on the maps, no storms, but there's the fog getting its act together offshore and pushing back into the bay. we still have this pretty good onshore breeze. in fact, fairfield, winds out of the southwest at 20 miles an hour sustained. out toward the concord area, winds out of the west at 12 miles an hour. and sfo, winds at 20 miles an hour at last check. our time lapse during the past hour, looking toward the golden gate bridge, notice one thing here. this marine layer was basically this deep yesterday. today, it's being compressed. that's a good sign we're warming back up, primarily away from the shoreline, as high pressure rebuilds over the next few days. for tonight, though, as we showed you, still coastal fog pushing back into the bay. tomorrow, it will be warm inland. more 80s. then we'll bump up the numbers gradually in the extended forecast. overnight lows will be in the low to mid-50s. no big changes here. partly cloudy skies inland. mostly cloudy skies around the

bay, near the coast, and patchy fog, especially right near the immediate shoreline. this area of low pressure has not been moving too much over the past week or so. it begins to scoot out to the north just a little bit for tomorrow, as high pressure rebuilds, talking about a warming trend with morning overcast, clearing back near the shoreline. 60s for the beaches. 70s around the bay. inland neighborhoods on track to approach the lower 90s in the five-day forecast. overcast out there, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 tomorrow, clearing back to near the coastline during the afternoon hours, revealing more sunshine away from the shoreline. but the beaches, still on the cool side. forecast highs for tomorrow, santa rosa at 80 degrees. fairfield, 84. once again, wind speeds pick up into the afternoon hours. around the bay, upper 60s, lower 70s. san jose, upper 70s, around 78 degrees. san francisco, we'll go with 67 degrees for tomorrow afternoon. in san francisco, golden gate park, outside lands day 3, temperatures on the cool side.
