there's new reason to delay the opening of the eastern span of the bay bridge, according to officials. bags full of drugs and hundreds of dollars in cash. one of the biggest drug busts in san francisco as police show off what they found. and hundreds of city workers walking off the job. we'll tell you about the strike in hayward and how long it's expected to last. good afternoon.

i'm tori campbell. embeatleed by years of -- embattled by years of delays, ballooning costs and broken bolt, now federal officials say there's no reason that the eastern span of the bay bridge cannot open on labor day. sal castanedo is live on treasure island with more. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon. the toll authority says if it, indeed, decides to open up the bay bridge in late september, they say the temporary fix is ready and would only take a few days. the long-awaited opening of the new eastern span had been planned for labor day. >> labor day has been the goal for two and a half years. whether or not that goal is met or not is dependent on decisions that will be met later this week. >> reporter: a letter sent last

week gives the program oversight committee approval to go ahead with a temporary fix for the cracked bolts. the fix could involve steel shims used to strengthen the span until a permanent repair is made. engineers say the temperature solution would not hamper any work being done on a permanent fix. that work could be done at the same time. many say this would be a lot safer than the current cantilever span in use now. >> the old bris is built on timber piles. that bridge has had steel pilers on it that need to be fixed. the question is when are we gonna open it? >> reporter: now, if they, indeed, decide to open up the new span over the labor day weekend or, for that matter, whenever they open up the new span, they will have to temporarily close the old span

for a days. published worsts says chp is ready in -- reports say chp is ready in case the opening is labor day weekend. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, sal. meanwhile, as the construction continues on the new eastern span, new energy- efficient lights are set to be turned on tonight. the l.e.d. lights are said to use half of the energy of other light bulbs and last five times longer. they are set to be lit at 8:00. a homicide investigation is underway after remarks from a man arrested for dui led police to a woman's body. police say the man spontaneously told them about a crime in east palo alto. when officers arrived at 6:00 this morning, they found a woman's body inside the apartment. a motive is not known.

there's no word on the woman's identity or how she was killed. the santa clara coroner's office has identified a woman found dead last week inside her sunnyvale home. she was killed by her estranged husband. the couple was in the process of getting a divorce. michael nehas was shot and killed by police after they say he rushed them with a knife at the end of a two-hour standoff. the cause of the woman's death has not yet been released. less than an hour from now, oakland police are expected to announce whether a woman's found in vacaville on friday is sandra coke from oakland. a news conference is scheduled at police headquarters. she will disappeared more than a week ago. she's an investigator with the federal defenders office. she was last seen with a man who she dated briefly 20 years ago and who was recently in her

alana putting glass coke's car. she's a convicted rape and robber required to wear a gps device as part of his patrol. police are calling him a person twys after coke vanished, the state department issued a warrant for his arrest nor failing to participate in the gps monitoring program. a major drug bust in san francisco resulted in the arrests and the confiscation of kilos of pills. new at noon, police just showed off what they seized and david stevenson is there live. >> reporter: san francisco police told us this may be the biggest narcotics bust in the department's history. 23 kilograms of powdered mdma, also known as molly or ectacy along with 30,000 pills. seized from the 3300 block of mission street. officers responding to a

burglary call spotted the narcotics. police also found 30,000 in cash. two arrests were made and police are now looking at whether there may have been plans to distribute the drugs at last weekend's outside lands music festival. >> we do not know at this point in time if there's any counsel dense by the fact this --ny coincidence by the fact that this weekend was the lands music festival. we're happy if it's a coincident. if not, we're happy none of it found its way to the polo fields. >> these two men were arrested. hagler is being held on a million dollars bill, the other man terrell, had a warrant for $500,000 out of illinois for a separate drug trafficking case.

police are pursuing federal authorities to see if they will get involved in san francisco. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. asiana airlines says it's not responsible for last month's plane crash that led to the deaths of three teenagers. in a filing in u.s. district court, the airline denied responsibility and claims that passengers contributed to their own injuries. the airline offered to pay $10,000 compensation to each crash survivor. the court filing is in response to two lawsuits filed by a burlingame lawyer on behalf of some passengers. berkeley's landmark post office which had been slated to be sold has been given a brief reprieve. that's good news for protesters who have been camping out in front of the building since the end of the last month. it's part of an effort to keep the post office from being sold. u.s. postal regulatory commission has agreed to delay the sale at least until of a it

hears from tom bates. he's expected to testify about why the post office should be saved. the group is happy but skeptical. >> the people of berkeley, the community, this is what -- we want this hear -- this here. this is all we got. >> after the hearing, the commission has 120 days to grant or defly the appeal. representatives and advocates for the chinese community are hopeful a federal court will block a new state law banning the sale of shark fins. the justice department filed a brief in support of their pox last month -- position last month calling the shark fin ban unconstitutional. they say the new law is preempted by existing federal law. the 9th sir court court of appeals in san francisco could review an preliminary injunction tomorrow to block the law.

the father of a 12-year- oldby accused of killing his 8- year-old sister does not believe his son committed the crime. >> i turned isaiah in. most people don't know it that. >> the 12-year-old has pled not guilty to charges he stabbed his sister leila to death at their home. police say the boy tried to blame the death on an intruder causing a span -- caughting a panic in the town. his urfather says he does not know how leila was killed but he does not believe his son was responsible. >> i was the first one in my house. i saw his demeanor. i don't think he did it. >> the 12-year-old remains in

custody and is scheduled to appear in court again next month for a hearing to set a trial date. 16-year-old kidnapping victim hannah anderson is now recovering from her ordeal in san diego at her family home. her family welcomed her home and asked that she be given privacy to heal and to grieve the loss of her mother and brother. she was found with kidnapping and murder suspect, james dimaggio. investigators believe dimaggio killed hannah's mother and brother, and bushed their bodies in his home and then abducted hannah. palo alto police, are warning drivers about a rash of smash-and-grab burglaries. they have responded to 70 break- ins and nearly 50 occurred in june. many have been in the el camino area near the stanford shopping center. burglars often target rental

cars because drivers are more likely to leave valuables inside. happening now, hundreds of hayward city workers have begun their three-day strike. the group walked off earlier this morning and are gathering for a noon-time rall ktvu's tara moriarty is there and joins us live to explain why workers are striking. >> reporter: good afternoon. these workers say there haven't had a raise in three years. now they are standing up for themselves. >> don't cross our picket line. >> reporter: since 6:00 this morning, city workers have been asking replacement workers to honor their picket. they are animal control officers, librarians and maintenance workers. >> i got a kid going to college. it's like how am i supposed to do that? i'm a single mother. a lot of us are. it's just at a certain point you have to say enough is enough. >> reporter: they decided to walk out on the job for three

days after negotiations between the union and the city crumbled. >> the city's been fair and reasonable in our proposals back to our bargaining groups. many of our groups have already met our concessions requirements including our firefighters. >> reporter: the assistant manager says the city needs workers to forgo raises for five years. workers say they've given up more than $7 million over the last four years. >> since february all they've said we want $5 more million. we're willing to talk to you in whatever way you want to give us $5 million but you will give us that. >> we have a 2.5 million deficit in our operating budget but that doesn't include the unfunded liability for our retirement or infrastructure needs. >> reporter: earlier this morning, things got heated when witnesses say a driver hit a pickettetteing worker -- picketing worker. >> we are taking our time crossing but there's know way for him to -- no reason for him

to bust his way through. >> into my truck. >> reporter: now, the man was take on a nearby hospital and police are reviewing surveillance video regarding the accident. the strike affects 280 workers, although those who work in 911 dispatch will remain on the job during this strike. live from hayward, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. the international jury that oversees the america's cup has found evidence that team oracle cheated during some preliminary races last year. officials found extra weight in three of the team's boats used in a world series races. the extra weight could have made those poets faster than the competitors. or raw oracle announced they are withdrawing from the race and have been ordered to return any awards associated with those races. an early-morning fire ripped through a santa rosa apartment complex.

the fire started at 1:00 a.m. at the marlo apartments. it took an hour to put it out. three apartments had heavy damage. several others have minor damage. no one was hurt. investigators are looking into whether gasoline in a storage closet started the fire. a big welcome back today from santa clara county officials to their headstart teachers and preschoolers. the county was facing a 5% funding loss because of federal budget cuts and some student spots were in jeopardy. the county voted in may to put $1 point 5 million in to compensate that. >> we felt we had an obligation to insulate that. >> the county serves about 2600 preschoolers. the study shows children who don't attend pre-k actually start kindergarten about a year or more behind their peers.

an indicator of just how strong the onshore breeze is. you can see fairly week for the past week. we've looked at winds anywhere from 20 to 30 maurles 30 miles an hour at a time. no relief for the pacific areas. temperatures already heating up. fairfield, 82. 7 in concord. low 80s in walnut creek. 84 in livermore. you are probably feel it because these temperatures are anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. we're warm around the bay, 2 to 4 degrees up. low 60s half moon bay with mostly sunny skies. that must feel like a nice change in your neighborhood. so for today, the ridge of high pressure coming in from the desert southwest continuing to strengthen more expected for tomorrow. tomorrow is actually expected to be a little bit warmer for today. for today, along the coast, 60s, around the bay 70s and 80s. getting into the low 90s for some of the warmer spots.

justice department and attorneys general from six states and d.c. have filed and anti-trust lawsuit challenging an $11 billion airline merger. a lawsuit claims the merger of american airlines and u.s. airways would decrease competition and create higher fares and fees for customers. a bay area state senator wants to crack down on doctors believed to be recklessly prescribing oxycontin. a concord senator is demanding the names of california doctors who prescribe the painkiller to drug dealers an addicts. he and a southern california state senator say the drugmaker has a list of 1800 doctors across the country who show signs of dangerous prescribing. only 154 of those names have been turned over to police. an east bay city known more

for wineries is gaining fame for its breweries. the city's first brewery altamont beer works, is already a popular spot and the first street ale house in downtown livermore reportedly orders 50 kegs of beer a week. a berkeley couple is hoping to find the owners of a dog found swimming in the middle of the bay. a woman brought the dog in to see if there was a microchip. they found nothing. the dog is well-fed, healthy, with a nice collar and looks like she belongs to someone. her husband commutes in san francisco by boat and found the dog with a group of windsurfers. >> there were four of them. they had their sails down. they had this puppy on board trying to keep her out of the
