machinery, the front loader was that officials say backed into a pedestrian on this walk way near the fine arts building. officials have not given any details of the victim but sources say it was a female pedestrian who was hit. but no one is saying anything else as if she was a student or incoming. workers understandable by shocked and one person said she wondered if the woman was walking where she shouldn't have been. workers were putting in an underground water valve. >> they could have been more cautious, but this is not an area you go through. >> how about for you? are you going to be more cautious? >> oh, yes, definitely i will be for sure. >> it's just a water line and it was just being drilled underneath the lawn and that actual part of it had nothing to do with any of this. >> what was the tractor doing

at the time then. >> he was just taking a load of dirt over to one corner of the job site. that's it. >> again the victim was taken to valley medical center after being given cpr at the scene but died at the hospital. the chancellor said they are working closely with investigators to determine what happened and if it could have been prevented. the coroner's office said it won't release any more information until the victim's family has been contacted. a drunk driving arrest led police to a woman's body in west paolo al to. there to tell us how officers were led to the victim's apartment and the circumstances surrounding her death. >> this is the apartment building where police found the victim's body. we talked with her devastated family this afternoon. the crime scene is in east palo alto.

a former math teacher was sentenced today to three years in prison for molesting a former student. 42-year-old marie johnson taught in liver more. in april she pleaded no contest to 9 counts of sex with a 14- year-old boy. police say the relationship began through the smart phone app words with friends. when released she faces 4 years of parole and must register as a sex offender. now to the story of a heroic rescue of a dog in the bay. you can see that black dog was surrounded by those wind surfers and here's the same dog this morning. as rob roth tells us the rescuer is a man with an unusual compute. rob. >> ken, he was on the bay about

3 miles from the berkeley shoreline. a man commuting home by boat rescued a dog swimming for its life. >> this dog was apparently close to drowning but she seems to be okay now. the wife of the man who helped rescue her brought her to the hospital to see if this pup has an id chip embedded inside. there's a good chance this dog wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for this man. >> to be able to help this poor lab, it felt really good. >> he was commuting home yesterday from san francisco to berkeley in his inflatable motor boat when he saw a group of winds surfers who looked like they were having problems. >> we spent 10 to 15 minutes trying to manure the boat

school year today, the super superintendent welcomed those preschoolers back this morning. the school district was facing cuts. but the county decided to put $1.7 million into the program to make up the deficit. the superintendent told us it's that important. >> it has been estimated and research would say that students who don't have access to pre-k can start kindergartener a year or two years behind their peers. >> serves about 2600 preschoolers. and a special section to help you get ready for the school year, just look for the tab on our front page to save on school shopping and more. among other times the giants are battling the weather back east. tell us all about it. >> a couple of teams, the nationals and the giants
