[ technical difficulties ] >> we'll hear from sal in just a little bit. coming up at 4:30, we're following developing news of a deadly shooting. the reason police say they had no choice to open fire. >> reporter: we're getting late details from police. i just talked to them about what happened. this happened off tennyson road at this apartment complex. you can see several police cars, the crime scene unit are on the scene. they should be out here for several hours this morning.

this all started last night just before 9:30 at night. police say they got a call from a 12-year-old girl that her parents were fighting and that her father was threatening to kill her mother. the father armed himself with a knife. dispatchers said they could hear a violent argument going on in the background. they sent multiple officers to the scene and the lieutenant describes what happened next. >> the officers arrived at scene. we were met with a male at the door with a knife and he had the knife raised forcing the officer in defense of his life to shoot the man who was armed with a knife. >> it's still an active scene. what we know now is the suspect, who was 37 years old

and was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead. there were two children, 11 and 12 years old. both were daughters of the suspect and his wife. they'll be out here for several more hours now. we don't know any more information about what kind of knife it was, we don't know much about the officers were involved except to say they were all veteran officers with five years on the force, multiple units here. they're piecing together the details that happened, it was minutes between the 911 call and the shooting and moments before the officers went into the apartment and when those first shots were fired. claudine wong, channel 2 news. >> the bay bridge is on the fast track to opening. we'll know when it will officially open to traffic. we're looking at it, now, from the traffic cameras. the traffic is moving along,

it's lit up quite nicely. the opening date will be announced in oakland, that will be on labor day weekend. they need the ideal conditions, they'll shut down the bridge five full days to realign the lanes and demolish part of the old structure. >> it doesn't matter. there are some places where the weather matters a great deal, it matters here because of the paving work. you need the right temperatures at the right times. >> the cost of the bridge is $6.4 billion and that's 4.5 higher than the original estimates. the entire span will shut down for five days beginning on wednesday august 28th. construction work would take place during the holiday weekend with the bridge opening

about the case after the sentencing. the san francisco bicycle is recalling for a redesign of fulton street. the 24-year-old woman was hit yesterday morning by a box truck making a right turn on fifth street. there is a lane for bicyclists on folsom street. they're calling for a bike way that is physically separated from traffic. there are currently no negotiations scheduled. the two sides remain tens of millions of dollars apart. complicated matters, the ac transit deals, it's calling for a 15% raise, and bart workers want more. cisco systems of san jose

welcome back, 4:43 is the time right now. we're locking live at the crash scene from yesterday morning. federal investigators are trying to recover the flight data recorder from the us cargo plan that crashed outside of birmingham, alabama. we're looking live at the crash site. the investigators say they have little information to go on. there was no distress call before the plane went down. they have not been able to get to the plane's cockpit because part of the wreckage is still smouldering. two died in that crash. we have a message for a republican congressman, it's in bakers field. it targeted the office of kevin mccarthy. it's one of a series of rallies aimed at republican members of

marriage in california is over. demonstrators staged another protest for a boycott of russian vodka. they dumped water out of vodka bottles. it was against russia's antigay laws. a man accused of killing a hairstylist is scheduled to face a judge today. james is expected to be in court this morning. he killed steven after the two met in a bar in castro and he's plead not guilty. naso is accused of killing four women in the 1990s.

the four women did not testify in the trial. they had this message after yesterday's hearing. >> i am looking forward to my opportunity to present my closing arguments. >> yesterday's hearing was delayed after just as naso killed my sister, the hearing continued after the judge decided no jurors could have seen sign. if convicted he could face the death penalty. they're asking a federal court to stop california to enforcing the fins, they cut the fins off and leave the fish to die. california's ban runs counter to federal policy. it is decision day for the new span of the bay bridge.
