traffic. let's go to steve first. how does the weather look? >> pretty gray for some. not for all. there's been drizzle on the coast. we're in between systems. pretty strong system coming out of the gulf of alaska. 54 to 64. lean more on the 60s. by noon, fog or sun. 62 to 82. some of that low cloud deck, it's not sold out. parts of the santa cruz coast and sonoma if they don't have it, they can probably see it. 64 to 94. there will still be a pretty big spread on the temperatures. focus in on healdsburg. starting off 55. we go to a high of 93 degrees. this looks like the last warm- to-hot day inland. fog, a breezy warm pattern. you are getting a lot of low to mid-60s currently. except santa rosa and napa. a little bit better breeze

northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 and beyond that into cupertino, the commute is in the valley. 7:03. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we're following breaking news this morning. we're just getting reports of an attempted smash-and-grab burglary at a tiffany's. this happened on mt. diablo boulevard and south main street near the broadway plaza shopping center. the call came in about one hour ago. a white truck backed right into the front of the store. it's unclear if anything was taken from inside the tiffany's jewry store -- jewelry store. the police are looking for two men who may be involved. paul chambers is headed to the scene and will have an update shortly. we're following developing news in hayward, where police have shot and killed a domestic violence suspect. they responded to the home on west tennyson road after getting a call from the man's daughter. ktvu's claudine wong is live with the reason police say they

were forced to open fire. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. let me give you a look at this apartment complex where this all happened on tennyson road in hayward. within the last ten minutes, police cleared the crime scene tape and cleared out of here after processing the scene for hours. we can tell you a 37-year-old man is dead after police responded to a call for help from his 12-year-old daughter. here's what we know about what happened -- inside an apartment in this hayward complex was a mother, father and their two daughters, ages 11 and 12. just before 9:30 last night, police say a fight broke out between the parents. a fight intense enough to have one of the daughters calling 911. >> dispatchers could hear loud commotion, fighting, arguing going on in the background. officers are responding and while they were responding, the child advised that the father armed himself with a knife and was threatening to kill his

mother. >> reporter: that prompted dispatchers to send units to the apartment complex. police say the first officers got inside and moments later, shots were fired. >> it was instantaneous as soon as the officers entered the apartment. >> reporter: police won't say what type of knife was used or what he did to prompt officers to open fire. but they will say officers feared for their lives. back live out here on tenny soon road in hayward, we've seen people identifying themselves as friendses and family members as officers cleared the scene and allowed them back in. the officers involved have more than five years' experience. they are considered veteran officers. they are on paid leave. it's unclear how many officers were involved and how many fired shots. the mother and two daughters were not hurt. but this investigation does continue. live in hayward, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. a vallejo healthcare

provider is facing elder abuse charges after the death of a 78- year-old bomb in her care. the paper reports police found the woman after doing a welfare check at her home on florida street. they say it appears she had been dead for quite some time before she was found. the individual was arrested on suspicion of elderly -- elder abuse charges. these are live pictures. you are looking at the bridge. in a couple of hours from now, we'll know when the new bay bridge will open. again, live pictures from one of our traffic cams for you. the new l.e.d. lights, they are not turned on at the eastern span. so it's not lit up like the original bridge. at 10:00, they will announce the opening date during a public meeting in oakland. it appears they want to open the new bridge on tuesday, september 3rd. that's typically good weather

labor day weekend. the crews will need the best possible conditions because they will have to shut down the bridge for five full days before the opening to move the road deck to re's line 26 of the lanes and also tear down part of the old bay bridge. >> the weather matters a great deal in paferring work and you need the right temperatures at certain times. >> the cost of the bay bridge, $6.4 billion. that's four and a half times higher than the original estimates. we have a lot more details about today's decision by the oversight committee. if the members select the labor day option, the entire span will be shut down starting wednesday, august 28th. construction work would take place during the holiday weekend with the bridge opening in time for the morning commute tuesday, september 3rd. stay tuned to us right here on

ktvu for the big bridge decision. you can also get an alert as soon as it is announced by using the ktvu app or following us on twitter or "liking" ktvu on facebook. a driver accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist in pleasanton has been charged with murder, in part because of what he posted on twitter. two months ago, 58-year-old diana of dublin was hit and killed during a bike ride and her husband was injured. 18-year-old cody hall was charged with vehicular homicide, but yesterday the charge was upgraded to murder. prosecutors say it was partly because hall posted a message on twitter where he bragged about driving fast and going on a "death ride." happening today -- the bicyclist who pled guilty to hitting and killing a pedestrian in a san francisco crosswalk will learn his punishment. chris bukari will be sentenced on felony vehicular

manslaughter charges in the death of wi. under a plea agreement, he's not expected to serve any jail time. instead, he will likely be sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. he's believed to be the first bicyclist in the nation to be convicted of vehicular manslaughter charges. and the san francisco bicycle coalition is calling for a complete redesign of folsom street after a bicyclist was hit and killed there yesterday morning. police say the 24-year-old was hit by a truck after making -- after making a right turn onto 6th street. the driver was not arrested. there is already a lane for bicyclists on that stretch of folsom but the bicycle coalition is calling for bike waves that will physically separated from traffic. the nfl and the players' union have reportedly agreed to study the effects of human growth hormones on athletes. "usa today" reports a study will involve about 100 former

players using that growth hormone as guinea pigs. two-thirds will get the hormones, the other third will get a placebo. the nfl wants to determine the impact of using -- use on a player's normal hgh levels. well, in today's back-to- school segment, a program to protect santa rosa high school athletes from concussions is on hold for now. students participating in sports were supposed to undergo the baseline testing. the "press democrat" is reporting a delay because there's a shortage of qualified trainers to monitor the programs. if an athlete had an arinjury, the trainer could test that person and compare the results with the baseline to determine if that person had a concussion? later on today, more than 150 people in san francisco will get free clothing, muni passes and back-to-school supplies. the st. anthony foundation is hosting the annual giveaway hon

developments from egypt. i want to show you some new video. a government building there set on fire this morning. all of this follows the government crackdown on protest camps yesterday and the deaths of hundreds of supporters of former egyptian president, mohamed morsi. ktvu's kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom right now and we're expecting to hear from president obama any moment now. >> reporter: he's supposed to be speaking in a few months. we did press for more information. he will likely not be taking any questions from reporters and, dave, you did mention this new development this past hour. supporters of the muslim brotherhood setting fire to a government building. take a look again at that video. protesters set fire to the building a few miles outside of cairo. there are reports the building was evacuated before the flames spread. egypt's health officials put the death toll at 525 and said at least 3500 others are injured. security forces used deadly force on peaceful protesters

yesterday in cairo. 7:17. we want to go back to our developing news from walnut creek, where there's been a smash-and-grab burglary at a tiffany's store. the thieves drove a truck through the front of the store. ktvu's paul chambers has just arrived on the scene and has received new information from police. what did they tell you? >> reporter: good morning, tori. a news conference just wrapped up. you see that white f-250? that is stolen out of citrus heights. that came from walnut creek police. they say that vehicle was used to smash into the store before 6:00 this morning. they said they did get a few items outside of the tiffany's jewelry shop here. most of the major things were back in a safe. so a lot of the major jewelry was not taken. we know they are looking for four suspects. they were wearing hoodies. they don't have an idea of race. of course, we're still gathering right now. i will tell you, this white f-

getting up to highway 17. it will be mostny slow. so is 101 getting up to the sunnyvale area. no major problems but a lot of slowing as you drive closer to cupertino. let's take a look at the concord to walnut creek commute. a car fire at 24 has messed it up. 6le 80 is -- 680 is backed up, a pretty long one. highway 4 is typically slow from antioch to pittsburg. at the bay bridge, we have a backup getting better. some people may be stuck in the east bay farther out. but right now, westbound at the toll plaza is backed up about to the end of the parking lot. five to ten-minute wait before you make it on the bridge. let's go to steve. >> sal? >> yes. >> last time i saw you was at 4:00 a.m. so good morning. >> good morning! mauled by a pit bull yesterday face as long recovery. this is a photo of him being wheeld into surgery at uc davis medical center in sacramento. she says hunter will need several reconstructive surgeries and skin grafts. his face may be partially paralyzed. he was playing at a friend's house in antioch when a pit bull knocked him down the stairs and a second pit bull mauled him on the face and his arms. >> he said mommy, i don't want to die. i said you're not gonna die. you're gonna be fine. >> one of the dogs in the attack has been euthanized. the other dog is in the custody of antioch animal control. 7:26. a husband and wife from oregon are sharing their amazing story of survival after a harrowing experience out to sea. mark and cynthia snyder have been spending time on their boat for 27 years.

>> the fireball hit me on the side. it burned my face here and here. >> in a rash, they abandoned ship and were eventually rescued by a nearby boat. they had no choice but to leave their two cats behind. the cats swam off the sinking boat and were reunited with their owners. the snyders were not seriously hurt and hope to eventually return back to the sea. 7:27. new tests are showing many pet safety restraints and cars used to protect pets during a crash don't work. the center for pet safety recently used fake pet crash dogs to test the effectiveness of the best-selling dog restraints. the test results show many restraints were not strong enough to protect a pet and they could actually choke the dog during at crash. right now, there are no

the commute. i want to mention that 680 has been a mess from concord to walnut creek. we had a variety of things go on here. southbound 680 slow from highway 4 to the wul interchange. 24 because it's being held up by 680 traffic. 24 looks good. a lot of the traffic is being held up on 680 is what i meant to say. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza, that's backed up for about a ten-minute delay. there are no major problems on that span getting into san francisco. s are this morning we're -- also this morning we're looking at northbound 101, 280, all of those freeways are getting more crowded on the way to the valley, a although we don't have any -- although we don't have any major problems blocking lanes on the three freeways i just mentioned. we want to take you back to the developing news from downtown walnut creek. burglars tried to rob the tiffany's jewelry store in a smash-and-grab attack. paul chambers is right there to show us a truck that crashed through the front of the store,

it's still there, paul. >> that's correct. >> it was a robbery. let me first show you right here. you can see there's some officers standing outside of the door. this is the truck. this white f-250 was stolen we're told by police from citrus heights. they say four males wearing hoodies, brought them, came up, rammed it into the back of the door there. there's two sets of door. the big silver there is right there and there's glass ones behind it. they used the track as a battering ram to knock open the first set of doors and go into the second set of doors. we're trying to show you. there's some broken glass right there. that's where they broke into the jewelry store. officers say it took them several attempts to get in there. the officers said they got away with -- >> they got surprisingly enough jewelry. so that's -- that's all we know at this point. there's jewelry scattered around the floor there. it's small jewelry. >> reporter: there was a white

suv seen leaving the scene headed towards highway 24. that's not this vehicle used. one vehicle was used in the robbery. the other one was used as the getaway. the jewelry is scattered all over the floor. they say the high-end stuff is locked out. the things they stole were the small display items. officers said it was costume jewelry. we're also finding out there was another smash and grab at another store in antioch. as of right now, police are not sure if the two are connected. they expect to be out here for several hours. they say there's a lot of videotape, a lot of surveillance video of this scene, of the area. once again, they are looking for four men driving a white suv and they say they were wearing hoodies. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, paul. new details now in the case of a san diego county man accused of kidnapping a teenaged girl and killing her mother and younger brother. newly unsealed search warrants show james lee dimaggio tortured the mother and son and

then killed them and burned their bodies in a house fire. he also shot and killed the family dog. records show he and hannah anderson called each other 13 times before their cell phones were turned off after the murders. while dimaggio's sister has -- was never charged, detectives believe she may have been aiding him. court documents show dimaggio's sister made an unusually large number of calls to his cell phone that day. funeral services for hannah's mother and brother will be in the san diego county on august 24th. the family of a missing child from oakland say they are frustrated with the lack of leads in the case. yesterday, almost two dozen people walked from police headquarters to city hall in honor of 21-month-old daphne webb. she disappeared five weeks ago in east oakland. her father told police someone kidnapped daphne from his car while he went into a store on 79th avenue. daphne's mother is frustrated with the police investigation. i know they tried to do

what they could do. but it does feel like it is at a standstill. >> when you're not privy to information behind the scenes, such as the investigation, it can sometimes seem like that. >> police say more than a dozen investigators are working on the case. 7:36. last night, a vigil was held in oakland in memory of sandra coke. she was the federal investigator whose body was found last week in vacaville several days after she went missing. this candlelight vigil was held outside of her home in oakland. they remembered sandra coke as a good neighbor and a dedicated single mother for her 15-year- old daughter. >> i can't wait for that day when we meet at heaven's gate. >> police say 56-year-old randy alana is a person of interest in the case. coke's friends say the two of them dated briefly 20 years ago. he recently reappeared in her life. alana is a convicted sex

offender. he's in jail on a parole violation. a teenaged girl in san jose was robbed. her classmate was hurt during a bold attack yesterday at a san jose high school. ktvu tea cara lui is live in san jose. you talked to some parents about what happened. >> reporter: that's right. parents and students arriving here on campus in the last 30, 40 minutes ago tell us they did hear about the incident. some of them got a phone call at home. others got an e-mail from the principal. police tell us a girl, a student here, rornlted being approached by a gunman on campus right after classes let out wednesday afternoon. the man demanded an electronic device she had. a male sturnt saw her getting robbed and tried to help. investigators say he turned around and pistol-whipped. he's in the hospital but is expected to recover. the girl is not hurt. we found one parent out here

passing out fliers asking others to take action. she's upset after hearing administrators to tell kids get off campus to have their kids pick them up at a store nearby. >> i'm enraged. i'm very upset. i'm thankful it was not my son. but i think there was a reason for me to be one of the very last parents to pick up my children. >> reporter: she's expecting another mom to come out here this morning and help pass out fliers. they are asking other parents to contact the school board and demand the school do a better job protecting students. police say the gunman is described as black or middle eastern in his 20s. wearing a zippered gray sweatshirt and black jeans. police are asking anyone with information to call them. we've placed call to several administrators here. we have yet to hear back. live in san jose, cara lui, ktvu channel 2 news. a private school in palo alto will report to the city today about why it exceeded its

enrollment cap. the san jose mercury news reports the school was given a permit that lets it enroll up to 415 students. but neighbors say over- enrollment is causing parking and traffic problems. officials admit the school is 33 students over the enrollment cap. they say they are working to address the neighbors' concerns. the school, by the way, is holding a community meeting tonight. students at city college of san francisco, calling on san francisco mayor ed lee to help the school keep its accreditation. they plan to hold a news conference this afternoon, asking mayor lee to demand that a commission reverse the device to -- decision to revoke the school's accreditation. 20 minutes before 8:00. a landmark building at cal state east bay will be imploded in j a few days. but before that happens, ktvu

will receive a tour of the demolition site in just a few hours. the 13-story warren hall will be deknollished this saturday -- demolished this saturday. the building that housed classes and classrooms opened in 1971. it's been vacant for two years because of earthquake safety concerns. the implosion is set for saturday at 9:00 a.m. this morning, paramedics are defending their response to a deadly stab a an el sobrante hardware store. emergency responders waited five minutes, it's reported, for deputies to secure the scene before helping the worker despite pleas at bystanders -- from bystanders. the man accused of stabbing the worker has been arrested.

speeds during this pursuit topped 100 miles an hour. oakland police started to chase the suspect accused of stealing a silver nissan. at the end of the chase, the suspects backed up the car and hit a police cruiser. two men and a female teenager were arrested. sheriff's deputies recovered a semi-automatic assault weapon at the scene. no one was hurt in the pursuit. some anlifts worrying that a -- analysts worry that an agreement won't be reached during the 60-day cooling off period for b.a.r.t. and complicating things, the a.c. transit deal. that calls for a 9.5% raise over three years. b.a.r.t. is offering a 10% raise over four years. b.a.r.t. employees want more. they say the revenues are higher than a.c. transit. tonight there will be more action to try to prevent west

the flight data recorder of the u.p.s. cargo plane that crashed just outside of birmingham, alabama early yesterday morning. they say they have little information to go on as far as the cause of the crash because there was no distress call before the plane went down. one story they are looking into is based on witness accounts of a possible mechanical prob -- problem. >> it was extremely low and then it sounded like it was sputtering, like it was out of fuel. >> investigators have not been able to get to the plane's cockpit because part of the wreckage was still smoldering yesterday. the two pilots on board died in the crash. people in utah who were forced to evacuate because of a fast-moving wildfire may be able to return to their homes today. the fire destroyed about 14 homes near the resort town of park city, utah. another 200 homes, though, are still being threatened. firefighters hope to allow the people back home by last night,

it happened about 5:45 this morning. police say four males wearing hoodies decided to smash this with a battering ram. there's two sets of doors. there's glass doors beyond it. they use truck, the -- they used the truck as a battering room to break the first set of doors and smashed in the others. police say they were only able to get inside one of the display cases and got a few items from there. there's jewelry scattered all over the floor. the high end stuff is look -- is locked up. other items were stolen. >> we're following up on multiple leads. we're looking into another similar incident here in contra costa county that happened at another store, kind of a smash- and-grab type thing shortly after this one. >> reporter: now, that department store was up in antioch. police are not sure if the two are related at this point. they say the suspects were seen

the nfl and the players' union have reportedly agreed to study the effects of human growth hormones on athletes. "usa today" reports that the study will involve about 100 former players used as hgh guinea pigs. two-thirds will get the hormone while the other third will get a placebo. the league wants to determine the impact of use on the normal use of hgh level. a program to protect santa rosa school athletes from concussions is on hold. students participating in fall sports were supposed to undergo baseline concussion testing. but "the press democrat" reports it's delayed because of a shortage of qualified trainers to monitor the program. if an athlete suffered an injury, the trainer could test that person and compare the results with a baseline exam to determine if the person had a concussion. more than 150 children in san francisco will receive free

the water tr temperatures went from 58 to 60. we loses northeast breeze and we get more of a southerly direction of the system coming in that produces the rain. high pressure doesn't want to lose its grip. the fog came in soon. we really couldn't cool off that much. the combination of the low overcast. there's been some drizzle. not all of the coast. it looks like most of the santa cruz coast is fog free. and about i would say three quarters of the sonoma coast. it's in between marin and san mateo taking the bulk of the fog. coast, fog, not sold out. still warm inland. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. but everything is pointing toward more fog, cooler, breezy pattern as we go into saturday. the key will be -- one forecast model is very cool. the other two are like well, it will cool. not that much. there's a lot going on out here. this system will sweep in here slowly. we're starting to see an edge with the stronger sea breeze.

welcome back. a driver accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist in pleasanton has been charged with murder in part because of what he posted on twitter. two months ago, 58-year-old diana herzborg of dublin was hit and killed during a bike ride. her husband was also hurst. 18-year-old cody hall was charged with vehicular homicide but yesterday, the charge was upgraded to murder. prosecutors say it was partly because hall posted a message on twitter, where he bragged about driving fast and going on a death ride. happening later today -- the bicyclist who pled guilty to hitting and killing a pedestrian in a san francisco crosswalk will find out his punishment. he will be sentenced on felony vehicular manslaughter charges in the death of 71-year-old suchi wi in march of last year. under a plea agreement he's not expected to serve any time in jail. instead, he will probably be

sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. he's believed to be the first bicyclist in the nation to be convicted of vehicular manslaughter charges. same-sex marriage will remain legal in california. the state supreme court rejected the latest legal effort to save proposition 8. supporters of the measure argue that only the two couples named in the landmark case should be allowed to marry. but the state's high courts declined to hear the petition. experts say unless something unforeseen happens, the legal battle over gay marriage in california is over. and in a landmark decision, the pentagon says starting next month, military personnel and same-sex relationships will be granted leave to get married. the new policy announces those members will get seven days of extra leave in order to get married. that's only if they are stationed more than 100 miles from a state where same-sex marriage is legal. the pentagon will also begin to

after hayward police shot and killed a man. it happened at an apartment on west tennyson road after the suspect's young daughter called 911. ktvu's claudine wong is here now to tell us what family members are saying, claudine? >> reporter: well, dave, just after our last report with you, a group of people approached us, identified themselves as family members of the man killed, donnie simmons. they are taking issue with the police account of what happened. police told us this morning that the officer-involved shooting happened after the suspect's 12-year-old daughter called 911 and told them that her father was fighting with her mother, had a knife and threatened to kill her mother. police also say when the suspect arrived, police came at them with a knife and that's why they opened fire. but the family of simmons says he was not armed with any weapon and say police had no reason to shoot him. >> he was a hard worker, he has two kids. he was a wonderful unkg.

-- uncle and brother. i could see if he had been drinking, but you don't do this. he's a good-hearted man. >> they have tasers. they could have tased him. >> i don't understand why they would come in and shoot somebody when there's nothing there. you just don't do that to a kid. he might be an adult. but he's my son. you don't do this. it's uncalled for. these kids have had enough trauma to see this happened to them. >> were they in the room? >> standing just like we are right now. >> reporter: family members distraught. they say today is the first day of school for the suspects two daughters and they say the fight between husband and wife was simply a lover's quarrel. one thing that may shed light on what happened is the 911 call made by the daughter. police told me that she did stay on the phone until officers fired those shots which means there should be at a minimum an audio recording of what happened. live here in hayward, claudine

wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. a teenaged girl in san jose was robbed at school yesterday and a boy trying to help her was hurt. it all happened during an attack at silver creek high school. ktvu's cara lui is live in san jose. you've been talking to both parents and the superintendent. cara? >> reporter: yeah, i talked to the superintendent in the last half-hour. that person tells me it was a recent graduate here on campus using her laptop exrur approached by a -- computer approached by a gunman. this happened as school was -- was wrapping up yesterday afternoon. the girl said the gunman demanded the laptop. a male student saw her getting robbed and tried to happen. investigators say the gunman turned around and struck the boy. administrators say he was pistol-whipped and taken to the hospital for stitches. he will be okay. the girl was not hurt. this morning, one parent was out in front of the school here, silver creek passing out fliers. encouraging others to take

action. she's upset after hearing administrators tell kids to get off campus and have their parents pick them up at a store nearby. the superintendent says they will be reviewing their response. >> i'm enraged. i'm very upset. i'm thankful that it was my my son but i think there was a reason for me to be one of the last parents to pick up my children. >> i think in a situation like this where you have a lot of kids waiting for the day to end and they don't have a class. we just have to be that much more diligent in terms of the supervision that we have here. >> reporter: now, a couple of parents have told us they are asking others to also contact the school board and demand that the school do a better job protecting students. now, the gunman is described as plaque or middle eastern, according to police. he's in his 20s, was wearing a zippered gray sweatshirt and black jeans. police are asking anyone with information, perhaps anyone who witnessed this incident or the suspect escape from campus to please give them a call.

live in san jose, cara lui, ktvu channel 2 news. in half an hour, two defendants in the notorious richmond high school gang rape case will learn if they will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. last month, two separate jurors found peter and mon toy yoguilt yo guilty -- montoyo guilty. they face up to life in prison. two men have already been sentenced. two others are waiting for trial. tomorrow, jose naso is scheduled to make his own closing arguments. prosecutors delivered their remarks already. he's accused of killing four women in the 1970s and 1990s. naso did not testify during the trial. he's been acting as his own attorney with the help of a legal adviser. moge those attending the trial -- among those attending the

2012 london olympics. 42-year-old mark sutton on your left in the tuxedo, he was killed at an airshow in switerland. he jumped from a helicopter and hit a ridge. he's best remembered for playing 007 and parachuting onto the field of the opening ceremony of the summer games. the also person in the photo, also a fellow stuntman, said he lost a close friend who shared a common bond with him. google is currently defending itself against a data mining lawsuit and filed a legal motion quoting an earlier court decision that says a person has no legitimate expectation of privacy and information they voluntarily turn over to third parties. that has some g-mail users pausing before they hit send. >> if it is not confidence, who

is able to see it, and what things can be extracted from it? >> google says it takes privacy and security very seriously. industry experts told ktvu that anyone who sends or receives e- mail through a third party should expect messages will go through automated processing. your social media rights don't necessarily die when you do. the u.s. has some of the strongest privacy laws in the world. so facebook can memorialize your page and no one can post anything more on it. twitter just deactivates the account if relatives send it, a death certificate, google will get you transfer your digital assets. in asia and europe, when you die, all of your photos, e- mails and all personal information become the all right of the media website. now, facebook may help people feel connected but it doesn't seem to make them happier.

stock market is low after more disappointing news from blue chip companies. walmart cut its profit. cisco still down 7% after they said they would put about 4,000 jobs. the dow is down 173. the nasdaq down 48. the s&p down 19. the number of americans applying for new unemployment benefits dropped to 320,000 last week. that's down 15,000 from the

week before. it's the lowest number since november 2007. economists say it's a sign employers are laying off fewer people and they are still steady but -- there's still steady but modest job growth. back to the developing story of a dramatic break-in at a tiffany's jewelry store in downtown wall mortgage creek. they used a pickup truck to ram the front store. paul chambers is there with the latest information. >> reporter: you can see they are towing a truck right here. they are loading it up on this flatbed truck. that truck was used in this robbery in morning. police say it's stolen out of citrus heights. we can take a look at video here. it all started at 5:45 this morning. police say four men wearing hoodies decided to use that car basically as a battering ram to go through two layers of doors at the tiffany. they said they used it and once

they got inside, they were able to break through and get inside one of the holding cases and taking some jewelry a -- jewelry away. >> they got surprisingly enough jewelry. that's all we know. there's jewelry scattered around the floor there. but it's small jewelry. >> reporter: police are looking at another incident that happened in antioch. they say a smash and grab happened there also. they are still trying to figure out if the two are related. they were last seen driving a white suv headed towards highway 24. you can see this is what the doors look like right now. they were able to break through both sets of doors. police say they tried several times. they say the people who stole these, probably didn't realize there was that many sets of doors and take that many to get through. we'll stay on top of this and bring you more as it develops. there have been several other

of the bay bridge. a special commit tee will make the announcement during a public meeting in oakland. that's at 10:00 this morning. the indication that we're getting is that the opening will be right after labor day weekend on tuesday. september 3rd. but whenever the opening date is, a lot has to happen first. >> there's a whole host of things that matter, how the contractors are mobilize on short notice or a longer notice matters. in contracting work. when you do things fast, verses do things slow, it matters. the kind of public notice is also going to matter. >> the reason the labor day weekend is a good estimated date is because crews need good weather for paving to open the bridge. also the entire bridge will need to be closed for five full days to move the road deck, realign the lanes and demolish part of the old structure. now, bridge closers in the past have been over the labor day weekend. the official announcement comes

police in seattle getting ready for the annual hemp fest. no one will get a ticket for marijuana possession. police will pass out doritos them will have stickers encouraging web users to check out a website and get information on the marijuana laws. this is the first time the event has been held since washington legalized rerk rational use marijuana. more than 8,000 plants were seized. this is part of the annual effort to cleanup the illegal frirles. the santa clara county sheriff's office posted this picture on facebook. they removed the pot plants near hamilton. sal, how are things doing? >> i'm gonna start off with the look at the richmond-san rafael approach. we've had slow traffic on 580

getting up there. then out of san francisco to daly city and down the peninsula, i think i messed it up here. let's do this. southbound traffic on 280 just a mess. getting down to san bruno, you can see that the traffic is going to be slow all the way down to the 380 interchange because of an earlier issue. let's talk about the bay bridge. that's cleared out very nicely coming into san francisco. there are no major problems. it's a very nice drive getting into the city. if you are driving on 880, it's still very slow from the coliseum. northbound traffic slows all the way up into the downtown area. 8:57 back to steve. a lot of low clouds in place. not completely on the coast. there are some areas that definitely get the sun. but temperatures on the mild side, kind of muggy. warm, 60s to 90s. it looks like we get cooling as we go into the weekend. >> are you satisfied with that, tori? >> i think i'll have to take it. no other choice.
