inside. good afternoon. our breaking news is out of oakland -- oakland, where a decision was just made moments ago for the opening day of the bay bridge. cal sas sas was there for the decision and is live. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the bay bridge is -- is scheduled to open on labor day. they just made that decision moments ago here at the mtc headquarters building in oakland. they were also talking about the plans and how they are going to do the closure, which will take about five days. the recommendation came after the bay area toll authority came and gave recommendation to the board. >> i move to the recommendations. >> i will second the recommendation. >> and i will make that action unanimous. item 1-a is approved. >> reporter: now, the labor day opening was put back on the

calendar after bridge officials received a letter from the federal highway add nin stration saying there was no reason to put off the opening. -- administration saying there was no reason to put off the opening. the bolts will be replaced with shims until a permanent repair can be made. for more than two years, they planned to open up on labor day. the bridge will close on wednesday before labor day. it will close for five days. it's scheduled to reopen with the new bridge on the tuesday after the labor day in time for the morning commute. they have five days of realignment to do. one of the other things we found out was the chp and also the caltrans officials are ready, they have a command center ready to do this. they've done this before. this will be another one of the closures. b.a.r.t. is not scheduled to have any

sort of labor problems that weekend. b.a.r.t. is ready to go. again, to recap, the bay bridge is scheduled to reopen on labor day. it will close wednesday before labor day. it should close tuesday after labor day. that's when the new eastern span will open. live in oakland, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, sal. more details on. rising cost of the new eastern span. when the decision was made to damage the bay bridge which was damaged in the loma prieta earthquake, caltrans estimated the cost at $1.3 million by 2001. that estimate doubled to 2.6 billion to build a signature suspension bridge and tower. three years later, the price ballooned to $5 million and now caltrans estimates the toastal cost to be $6.4 billion. police are searching for four men in a white chevy blazer after a jewelry store

heist in walnut creek. paul chambers is live with more. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. one of the things you had to see to believe. tiffany's is closed. they say they will be closed. they usually open at 10:30 a.m. you can see the shades have been drawn. they've closed those also. talking about the smash-and- grab robbery, police are still looking for the suspects. take a look at this. someone used this pickup truck as a battering ram to break into tiffany's. that's according to walnut creek police. officers say the truck was stolen out of citrus heights and around 5:45 a.m. four men wearing hoodies came out with jewelry. >> it's small jewelry, the stuff left out. the high-end stuff's locked up. >> reporter: the robbers took off in a white suv and headed towards highway 24. investigators say the be the

men were only in the store for a few minutes. if it weren't for the two sets of doors, they might have been able to get away with more. >> it took them longer than they probably anticipated. they only made entry into one display case. >> reporter: the latest to happen here in walnut creek, you may remember, two men went into a jewelry store in november and there was robbery in december at macy's that same year. tough -- tiffany's is urged for the rest of the case. police urge you to call them if you know anything. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. in an unrelated incident, two men are in custody and a third is still on the loose in connection with the burglary at a j.c.

penney store. around 5:00, the men were trying to pry open the exit door at the j.c. penney. two men were oakland were caught after their car crashed on highway 4. a third suspect ran away. we're still waiting to hear the sentence for two richmond men convicted in the gang rape case. a judge is expected to announce the timeny now for more 29-year- old marcellas peter and 24-year- old jose montona. last month, they were found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl outside a homecoming dance in 2009. they both face a maximum life sentence. two other men are already in prison in this case and two others are waiting for trial. tomorrow, joseph naso is is scheduled to make his own closing arguments in his murder trial. marin county prosecutors delivered their closing arguments yesterday.

the 79-year-old is accused of killing four men during the 1970s and 1990s. he's been acting as his own attorney along with a legal adviseer. or -- adviser. >> i want him connected. i i want him -- i want him quicked -- convicted. >> reporter: a mother passed out fliers this morning. she asking parents to complain about a school response after a student was reportedly pistol- whipped on campus. >> i don't think they knew how to handle it at all. they didn't know what to do. they should have locked all of the students down knowing

someone was out here. >> reporter: district officials say a gunman approached a recent graduate on campus demanding her laptop. a male student was hurt as he tried to intervene. >> i saw administrators and staff telling it the students to get off the campus and go wait for their parents at target. >> reporter: the superintendent says the boy needed stitches but will be okay. he added the school will review its policies. >> i think in a situation like this where you have a lot of kids waiting for the day to end and they don't have a class, we have to be that much more dilly gent in terms -- diligent in terms of the supervision we have. >> reporter: only some students were surprised by the violence. >> a little. not really surprised about it. >> reporter: officers plan to be on campus all day offering safety tips. investigator investigators say the gunman is black or middle eastern he was last seen fleeing the campus. police want to hear from anyone who saw any part of this

incident. in san jose, cara lui, ktvu channel 2 news. a car flew off a freeway in san jose sending a toddler and two adults to the hospital. this is new video of the accident. the highway patrol says the truck collided near highway 85 near blossom hill. the impact of the cash sent the car down below near a parking lot. the vehicle crashed through a chain-link fence before coming to a stop. emergency crews took a toddler and pregnant woman to the hospital. crews had to use the jaws of life to get the driver out of the car. luckily, the three escaped major injury. >> they dodged about eight or nine trees in between where they left the freeway and to their point of rest. >> >> the victim ally injuries are minor. no one -- the victim's injuries are minor. no one was hurt. we have developing news out of egypt where the death toll has risen to more than 500

it all happened in the 2100 block of tenny soon road in a large apartment complex. new at noon, ktvu's claudine wong gives us a look at where the shots were fired and why on more the suspect's family is now speaking out. >> reporter: it happened in this upstairs apartment. rezs say the hinges were torn off as officers came in. >> that's where he shot him. >> reporter: family members identify the man killed as 24- year-old donnie gene simmons, junior. he lived in the apartment with his wife and two daughters. >> i just don't understand why would they come in and shoot somebody when there's nothing there. you don't do something like that to a kid. you don't do that. >> reporter: police say it was his 12-year-old daughter who called 911 for help last night because her parents were fighting. >> while they were responding the child advised the father

armed himself with a knife threatening to kill her mother. officers arrived. they came in and were met the male with a knife. >> reporter: and that's when police say officers feared for their lives and opened fire. neighbors say they heard the shots. >> boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: but family members are challenging the account of what happened and say simmons wife and daughters were standing next to him when he was shot. >> my brother had no weapons. >> reporter: no knife? >> nothing. >> they were in the room, the children, right there. >> reporter: what will be able to provide answers will be the audio recording of the 911 call that first brought officers to the apartment. police say several officers were inside when the shots were fired. all are described as veterans. all are on paid administrative leave while this investigation continues. in hayward, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. in just about an hour, the

bicyclist who pled guilty to hitting and killing a pedestrian in a san francisco crosswalk will learn his punishment. under a plea agreement, chris buccare pled guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter charges in the death of 71-year-old suchi wi. he's not expected to serve jail time but will likely be sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. the 24-year-old bikist killed yesterday morning in san francisco has been identified as emily muloc. she was hit on a truck on -- by a truck on folsom street and the driver was not arrested. and now the san francisco bicycle coalition is calling for a complete reredie sign of -- redesign of folsom police. san francisco police are looking for a man who pistol- whipped and robbed a city worker near candlestick park. it happened on eckerson avenue, not far from candlelight vigil park. police say the suspect struck

the 59-year-old city worker with a gun sand then stole his wallet. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital to be treated. some analysts worry that a b.a.r.t. settlement will not be reached during the 60-day cooling off period. there are no new negotiations settled. the two sides remain tens of millions of dollars apart and complicating the problem, a.c. transit's deal which called for a 9.5% raise over three years. but b.a.r.t. workers have rejected a worker of a 10% raise over four years. hundreds of kids in san francisco are gearing up today to head back to school. the st. anthony's foundation began the annual giveaway from backpacks, new clothes from old navy and free muni youth passes to about 200 kids living in the tenderloin. >> for kids who are going back to school, just like any kid anywhere they need the confidence, they need to know they will look good and they

habitat. the so-called american fire continues to rage out of control northeast of forest hill in the tahoe national forest. it started on saturday. according to the u.s. forestry service more than 4900 acres have burned. this is the largest wildfire in northern california so far this year. right now, it's 35% contained. flames are burning in very steep and wooded terrain. the community says so far the community of forest hill is not being threatened. the cause of the fire is under investigation. tonight, fogging is scheduled on the east side of san jose to prevent the spread of west nile virus. the fogging is scheduled to begin at 11:00 and will take place in the area between berryessa road, east san antonio street, north 19th street and 23rd street. so far, santa clara county has one confirmed human case of west nile virus. there are 14 cases statewide, including two that were deadly.

well, stepping outside the door today. a lot of sunshine across most of the bay area. i have to say most because we actually still have some patchy fog, dense fog near san francisco keying the beaches on the cool side -- keeping the beaches on the cool side. temperatures in the 80s already. there's the fog bank hugging ourier shoreline from half moon bay, pillar point, right around south san francisco and the golden gate bridge as well. still some dense fog near the shore line. away from that, it's warming up nicely. fairfield right now 82 degrees. san jose reporting mostly sunny skies in the upper 70s. san francisco's 64 and santa rosa at last check reporting 80 degrees. forecast headlines for today -- coastal fog. near 90 inland by 3:00 this afternoon. tomorrow we'll bump up the fog layer and cool things off a few degrees for friday, saturday. the weekend, morning clouds.
