explosives, the landmark building is scheduled to be demolished in two hours. the geologists predict that it will generate the same amount of force as a 2.0 earthquake. we have a reporter on the blast site. >> i hope i have my hearing protection in. we should be a safe distance out. we have a lot of details about it. there will be a warning signer two minutes before the blast, and one minute before the and 0 minutes before the blast. this is a talk of cal state east bay. if you take a look over here to our left. you can see there's a large vip reception here. a large audience is expected to turn out and watch this. the campus was shut down and it will be shut down through monday morning to clear the campus from the demolition.

we're two miles away from warren hall. it served as the administration building for two decades. it's not a danger to students, but expensive to rebuild in the event of a major quake. we talked to the demolition expert on thursday. it's too tall to take down by crane. they'll be using 430 pounds of explosives to buckle building and let gravity do the rest. >> it will be between 7 and 8 seconds. >> warren hall, you can see as we've said has been prepared. one of the things they'll be doing this morning is running through the campus multiple times to make sure nobody has snuck on campus so they're trying ton get a close look at the building this morning. again, once warren hall is brought down a new administration building will be

built elsewhere on campus. the area will be left as a green space or a parking spot. we've learned new details on how the procedure will go this morning. there will be a warning signer 10 minutes before 2 minutes before and one minute before the blast. coming up in the next half- hour, we found out one of the geology cal members will do a this survey and he's on scene. we'll have a live interview coming up in a half-hour. we're live christian captain channel 2 news. >> as you heard christian talk about, scientists are on site. they're going to learn more about that hayward fault. volunteers and scientists installed seismic monitors in the neighborhoods around the campus. they will measure how was the -- how fast the energy from the

the children have been found. it was issued last known for a 9-year-old and her brother, they were in the custody of child protective services when they went missing. the parents took the children out of nevada on wednesday. this happened after 11:00, it happened in knight street near the wilson college preparatory school. they're responding to that scene and a number of bystanders in the area. at this point police will only say the victims are adults and no arrests have been made. authorities in contra cost at that county are investigating a hit-and-run police shooting. the hit and run occurred in oakland on the west side of the tunnel. the shooting happened on the east side of the tunnel. the entire episode began with a

car and a motorcycle and the crash injured the motorcyclist and caused the bike to catch fire and tied up the commute. later an officer spotted a car matching the description in the hit and run on the other side of the tunnel. investigators say there was some type of altercation causing the officer to shoot the male driver. >> it's unfortunate that this happened here and it's a sad incident. >> it's pretty quiet and peaceful here. >> it's shocking that this happened here. >> the hit and run suspect was taken to john medical center while had the motorcyclist went to highland. there he is a growing investigation with the contra cost at that district attorney offices. this happened at 8:45 in the park, police say the father and child were leaving the playground when two men walked

up and pulled out a gun and knife and robbed the father. one of the membership punched the father in the face and slashed his arm. the child was not hurt and they have increased patrols in that area. >> it's not something i have heard of in my career. someone being targeted as a victim of al violent crime when they have a young child with them. it boggles my mind quite frankly. >> police released two sketches of the suspects. one is described as latino and one african american. they're wondering if the same two men were involved in a robbery in downtown palo alto. this should be one of the biggest and most memorable gay pride festival. it is in discovery downtown park in san jose. people can get married at the festival.

old randy violated patrol by contacting sandra coke. he resisted arrest. he dated coke 20 years ago. two days after coke was reported missing. her body was found last week in vacaville. police say they're investigating and no charges have been filed. a baby shot and killed last week in oakland has now been laid to rest. yesterday a funeral was held for 16 month old drew jackson. baby drew and his father 20 years year andrew thomas was shot to death. no arrests have been made. a $30,000 reward is being hovered in the case. mark is in the area this weekend to push for gun control. gabby giffords was injured in the mass shooting two years ago. if the two are supporting a bill that would expand

background checks for firearm purchases. those nationwide checks would not infringe on the right to bear arms. they've filed additional charges against a concord teacher. two more young people have come forward leading to 17 additional charges against 45- year-old joseph andrew martin. he faces a total of 109 charges. he taught fifth x-rayed and had been at wood side elementary since 1991. he pleaded not guilty. he faces life in prison if convicted. the joseph naso jury trial will continue on monday. they say the prosecution's case is weak and circumstantial. he's charged with killing four northern california women in the 1970s and '90s. the former freelance photographer told the stories and talked to them and how he

demolish the building. it has been deemed seismically unsafe and there it is. demolition crews are making the final preparations. what's going on christian. >> reporter: less than an hour as you said until warren hall comes down. a lot of excitement. crews have placed 400 pounds of bringing the building down. it will take 7 to 14 seconds for the four decade old building to come down. joining us live is the chief financial officer, if we could talk for a moment. you have been in contact with the command center. you can give us a sense of what's going on, the lathe minute preparations. >> reporter: they're maintaining the perimeter, they're making sure all cars are outside of that perimeter. the people, their job will be to maintain eye contact between now, and the implosion. if anything does come into that perimeter, they'll stop and re-

evaluate and start over again. >> it will take 7 top 14 seconds. this is the final part of this. there's been a lot of work leading up to this point. >> it's been about a year of intensive planning, six months of actual work on the building, to remove equipment and materials before the actual implosion. there's been quite a bit of activity, quite a bit of noise on campus, quite a lot of cooperation to not interrupt educational programs. >> this is seismically unsafe. this had more to do with the financials if there was a major earthquake. >> the building was intended to stay erect in the convenient of the earthquake, but the collapse would have been able to -- difficult to recover from financially. they tried a seismic review board that looks at these buildings. they evaluated the building to

come up with different options to strengthen it. they were unable to come up with an idea financially and so they all agreed to imploding it. >> it's a big project here over our shoulders. a lot of excitement building on the east bay campus. we'll hear a warning signer ten minutes before it goes off then one at two minutes and one at one minute before it goes off. we'll carry that demolition live. we're live in hayward, ktvu channel 2 news. >> scientists are using that i am motion to learn more about the hayward fault. they installed 600 seismic monitors. those devices measure how fast the energy from an earthquake travels. researchers want to know more about the depth of the hayward fault and whether it's connected to other faults.

the hayward fault zone is less than a half mile from the warren hall building. cal state east bay has cleared out the entire campus that is 350 acres. an area has been set up, they're asked to go to the k- mart parking lot. folks might want to bring those binoculars just in case. you can watch the warren hall implosion live, we'll have it live streaming at ktvu.com. if it's past 10:00, we'll spring it to you online. the school says it's taking every precaution to insure safety especially in the wake of implosion that injured five people in bakers field at the beginning of the month. another blue up two towers. remnants flew into theout of spectators including one man who lost his leg.

taken top johnson medical center. we have just received new information about a shooting in oakland. two people are dead and two others injured. this happened after 11 last night on 105th avenue and knight street. it's across the wilson college preparatory school. our crews saw number of units responding to the scene and a number of bystanders in the area. they have told us they are adults and no arrests have been made. police are searching for two young men who robbed a man in front of his young child. it happened at this park. two men walked up and pulled out a gun and a knife and robbed the fire father. one of the men punched the father in the face and slashed his arm. the child was not hurt but there are increased patrols in

the area. >> it's not anything i've heard of in my career career, someone being targeted in a violent crime when they've got a young child with them. it boggles my mind quite frankly. >> they released two sketches of the robbers. one is 5-foot 9, 190 pounds and another african american about 6 feet and 190 pounds. they were in downtown palo alto. two children with respect found safe in sacramento. this sister and brother were both in the custody of child protective services when they went missing. the parents violated a court order and took the children out of nevada on wednesday r. the friend of faith walk started. the nice 5k and you'll walk and

[ yelling ] [ explosion ] s >> there it ising a a twin building, it was imploded to make room for a new apartment complex. part of the dayton building was brought down. let's bring you back to the bay area. we'll have our own implosion in just about a half-hour from now. warren hall is a 13-story tower named for a trucking magnate.

we have warren hall in our sites. we should be hearing that first warning signer. >> just about 20 minutes from now, we should be hearing that first warning signer. we're less than a half-hour from demolition hall. you can see it in the distance. it's out of the exclusion zone. we can tell you right now crews are circulating through the area to make sure no one is that exclusion zone in warren hall. the count down would be immediately stopped. the situation is re-evaluated to see if it's safe to proceed. we don't see any reports of unscheduled activity going on. this has been the administration building for four decades, but was deemed to be the most seismically unsafe building inside the cal state system. not a danger to students, but expensive to rebuild in the

event of a major earthquake. we talked to the demolition expert on thursday, the building is too tall to take down by crane. they'll be using 430 pounds of high explosives to buckle will the building and they'll let photograph it do the rest. >> the time will be 7 or 8 seconds to bring it down. >> there's a vip seating over there right now. the grandson of mr. warren the man for whom the building was named. he's speaking, we can tell you the cal state university's president is here. one of the hundreds of spectators watching history coming down. the procedure is we'll hear that warning signer go off 10 minutes before, one more warning superone minute before the demolition is scheduled to begin. we'll bring you that entire event coming up in less than a

the warning sirens have gone on, giving us an indication everything is on schedule right now. >> ktvu's christien kafton is out there. you said there was a 10-minute

warning horn you heard? >> reporter: yeah, i actually didn't hear it. we were giving a high sign. it's not audible where we are. i'm actually looking over at brad wells. he's cfo for cal state east bay. he has been giving us a visual sign, if things are still going on track. he just raised his finger for the one-minute sign. so that means we are one minute out right now from the scheduled implosion here at warren hall. claudine was saying a minute ago, a lot of dynamite, 430 pounds of dynamite and high explosive called rdx, all set to bring down this 13-story building. those sirens have gone off, meaning the area has been cleared. there have been police officers in the area, making sure that there is no one in the area. if there is somebody found in that area, they will stop the process, clear the area, then restart the countdown. again, at this point, we're not getting that as the indication right now. we are about 25 seconds out right now from the scheduled implosion here at warren hall.

>> and it will happen quick. 7 to 14 seconds and this should be all done? >> reporter: the whole process should be 7 to 14 seconds. we are 10 seconds out. i'm going to -- [ explosions [ >> we can hear the explosions. [ explosions ] [ warning sirens ] >> 13 stories. opened back in 1971, tallest structure in heyward just until about 15 seconds ago. >> that was faster than 7 to 14. they were going to blow one side and let gravity do the rest. that's exactly what it looked like happened. >> reporter: yeah, you could see the blasts taking place and then the building hung there just for a moment. as you said, gravity really did the rest. there's a large crowd here. you might have been able to

hear some of the applause and cheers, as warren hall went down. now taking a look, you can see the big plume of dust. i was out here the other day talking with the head of facilities here at cal state university east bay. he said they did anticipate that there would be a dust cloud. they are, however, saying they don't think there will be any damage to any nearby buildings, which would be incredible. a very surgical strike using this explosive. in fact, the library is just across a small alleyway, probably no more than 50 feet away from where warren hall once stood. they are saying not only will the building not be nicked, i said what about the glass. will the glass survive the impact? they said it sure will. they said they know what they are doing. as the dust clears, we're starting to get our first look at the void, where warren hall once stood, the nearby library in the area, again, seems to be standing, intact. seems at this point that things went off without a hitch. we will, of course, continue to

monitor the situation out here and check to see if in fact everything did go off as planned. but at this point it, does appear that everything went down as planned here at warren hall. >> and how long before crews actually start going into where warren hall was and start looking around and pulling out the debris? >> reporter: well, that's one of the big projects, of course, getting in there. no word on exactly when they will go in. one of the first considerations, of course, is safety, for anybody involved. they will want to be sure that all of the explosives have in fact gone off. presumably, that will be one of the first things they do before they try to get into that area, is make sure that in fact all of the explosives used did go off, make sure the area is stable and secure and safe before they can get in and start the lengthy process of removing that, that debris. we can tell you that, you know, this may have taken just a few seconds, as we all saw, to come down. the big process, of course, is

the lead-up to it and all of the work that follows. they will have to do a lot of work hauling all that debris out. >> and 12,500 tons of it, the estimate of what it will be. i'm curious, did you feel the ground shaking? they said it would be like a 2.0 earthquake. we know the heyward fault is 2000 feet from that building. did it feel like a little bit of an earthquake? >> reporter: you know, subjectively, i wouldn't describe it as feeling like an earthquake. we definitely felt the concussion from the explosives used. that was the first thing that i noticed. i actually felt the concussion. i would say just a split second before i heard the sound, so it all came rushing through. we could definitely feel the vibrations from the sound. didn't necessarily feel the ground shake. i'm looking over at my photographer, ryan. he's saying he didn't feel the ground shake either. we both definitely did feel the concussion from the explosives used to bring down warren hall. >> and what about the usgs?

talking about earthquakes, they placed seismographic sensors and recorders out there, all because of the heyward fault. the building was so close to the heyward fault, just about 2000 feet away. what are those sensors and recorders, what are they looking to get out of those? >> really, what they explained was these sensors looked straight down at the vibrations in the ground. they say that if you have one sensor, you have sort of a beam looking straight down. if you have two, you have sort of a, you have sort of a plain. when the building goes off, they are hoping it will send a shock wave through the ground and with their net of 600 or so sensors, they are hoping to really develop a 3d map of the area here surrounding the heyward fault, so they get a sense on what the ground looks like, what kinds of materials are here, and that gives them a better sense of what would happen in a case of a major earthquake, where the shaking will be worse, where the shake will be a little better.

if we can come on back and take a look at our live picture now, you can see that the dust really has started to clear quite quickly, and you can see there's the void where warren hall once stood. it's a pretty incredible sight. it was a landmark here in the heyward area. and now, it is in the history books. >> and for those people who may be just tuning in now and saying, wait, we missed it, we've got it for you again. we're getting impressive feedback on our facebook page. looked like it happened just as planned. >> here we go. [ explosion ] >> reporter: sure did appear to go off without a hitch. is history, so to speak. >> absolutely, yes. we were sorry to see the building go, but given the seismic challenges it was facing, we needed to take it down. we're really pleased that the improceedings went as planned. >> reporter: that was the big question. did everything go as planned? from our vantage point it, appeared everything went off without on hitch. >> yes, it did. it was supposed to tilt away from the library so it wouldn't hit, so whether it imploded it fell exactly as planned. it looks very good. >> reporter: what can we look forward for the rest of the day? when will crews get in and have a chance to start removing debris? >> i think they will begin today and they will be working today and tomorrow to remove the debris and clearing it away. they probably won't have all of it cleared out, but they will have enough so we can reopen the campus at 6:00 a.m. on monday. >> reporter: that's an important note, that cal state university east bay still closed down. people may think that because the implosion is over, that they can come back onto the campus, but that is not the case. this is still a secured area. >> right, absolutely. it is a secured area.

we cannot have people come back on because of the demolition that has occurred, as well as the construction crews that will come on. >> reporter: if we could just talk for a moment about the feel of all of this, really, there was -- i'm sure you had offices there. i've talked to many students who had classes in warren hall. it's sort of the end of an era so to speak. how are you feeling at this time? >> a little bittersweet, as you're suggesting, because the building did mean a lot to the campus. it was an iconic structure. you could see it across the bay area. now you won't have that visual focal point for the university. we hope to build something else there, put a monument or some iconic structure there. >> reporter: sounds great. thank you for joining us. we'll take one more look at the void, where warren hall once stood. really, again, guys, pretty miraculous that this building seems to have gone down without a hitch. again, you had heard it there, that the building was designed, the explosives were designed to settle off, set the building off to one side, then have it settle down and then they say

it appears that is exactly what happened, that the implosion went off, the building leaned away from that library that i had been talking about earlier, where they say they don't even expect a nick on the library, no blown-out windows. they say it seems everything went off text book and that crews could very well begin the process of removing that debris as early as today. >> and i know we have another look at this from a different angle. i think i saw there as the dust started to blow out of there, some of the rubble. i don't know if we still have that shot. i guess we don't. you can see all the reinforced concrete walls, now down. about 12,000 tons? >> yes. they actually said -- there was a quote from the company in charge of this from maryland, who has been doing this for 65 years. they said they do not expect the debris field to be any further than 35 feet away from the foundation. you can see a little part of that building through the trees there, which is pretty incredible. and the precision of the science, they said this is very predictable and very safe. i just got something on

facebook from one of our viewers, pam nolan, who lives in alameda. she said when she watched it here on ktvu, then two seconds later could hear the explosions, kind of a delayed sound. there's the other picture you're talking about, the rebar, steel and concrete and what is left of this warren building, historic building and an historic day as this chapter ends for that building because it was seismically unsafe and they just couldn't have it there anymore. >> warren hall, named after mr. eguy warren, 1957, persuaded state leaders to open the state campus in heyward. that campus is closed now and is scheduled to reopen at 6:00 a.m. monday. quite the impressive sight here, as you watch live on mornings on 2. we'll get back to christian kafton in a bit as he gathers more reaction from folks at the cal state east bay campus. early this morning, law enforcement in solano county arrested a fugitive who they say tried to ram police cars in a daring attempt to escape. vallejo police responded to a report of gunfire at 2:30 this

morning on the 400 block of top sail drive. officers spotted two people leaving that scene with the suspect lloyd harris behind the wheel. police say the chase went on to interstate 80 and at times, the suspect was driving against traffic and even tried to ram police cars on two separate occasions. investigators eventually tracked down the two suspects. harris was caught by some police dogs. he was wanted on drug charges. the passenger, jennifer crackle, was also arrested. forecast looking nice. fog near the immediate coastline. it will continue to feel muggy out there. that's the camera perspective on the satellite. we do have high clouds streaming in, favoring the southern half of the region, south of golden gate bridge. as far as current numbers, updated for the 9:00 hour, we

are warming up. fairfield, 69 degrees right now. san jose, 64. san francisco, 60. and our friends in santa rosa reporting 63 degrees at last check. changing weather pattern this weekend as this area of high pressure backs off just a little bit. we're watching this guy over the next few days. today, partly sunny, humid, about the same as yesterday temperature wise. could be a little cooler. this system backs off a little bit on sunday, as this high builds back in. so with that, the key headline for tomorrow, it will be warmer. tomorrow, easily the hottest day of the weekend. that means mid to upper 90s well inland. as far as the circulation, it's going to trigger a few isolated thunderstorms. not for this weekend. look what happens. we'll take this into late sunday, into monday. you see the overall flow moving in from the south. here's what happens first thing monday morning. shower activity to our south, close enough to warrant at least a chance of an isolated thunderstorm on monday and still the flow moving into the region by monday afternoon. a slight chance on tuesday. then once again, into

an isolated thunderstorm on monday, slight chance on tuesday. then once again, a chance of a thunderstorm on wednesday. we'll iron out the details over the next few days for monday through wednesday timeframe. this weekend, it will be warm and muggy. . new this morning, a statewide amber alert for two young children from nevada has now been canceled, after they were found safe in sacramento. the amber alert was issued last night for 9-year-old lily ramirez and her 3-year-old brother, martin rosales. they were both in the custody of child protective services when they went missing. police say their parents violated a court order and took the children out of nevada on wednesday. oakland police are investigating a shooting that left two people dead and two others injured. it happened just after 11:00 last night on the 105th avenue and knight street, right across from the aspire lionel wilson college preparatory. our crews saw multiple units responding to the scene of a number of bystanders watching on. one person died at the scene. the other died later at the hospital. police have not released a lot of information on the victims, but they do know that they are

. good saturday morning. time now, 9:16. this camera shows the weather story. it's beautiful here. low clouds, dense fog hugging the coastline. coming up for the hottest day of the weekend. more than 1600 families are under evacuation orders in sun valley, idaho as a wildfire continues to burn closer to their homes. residents say the smoke from this fire has been unbearable and it could get even worse today, with more strong, gusty winds in the forecast. the fire has burned 64,000 acres of land so far and is 6% contained. there are more than a thousand firefighters battling the flames. >> we didn't have the rainfall last fall, nor the snow pack last winter that we would have liked to have had. >> sun valley is an affluent vacation area that is quite popular with celebrities, such

as former california governor arnold schwarzenegger and actor tom hanks. managers at the sun valley ski resort say they have turned on water cannons that are normally used for snow-making in the case the fire threatens some mountain top lodges. next week, threetown hall meetings will be held to talk recent cuts to fire services. pittsburg, lafayette and clayton have all been affected by fire station closures and reduced fire services because of budget cuts. consultants were hired to give feedback at the meetings. authorities in contra costa county spent hours overnight investigating the circumstances of a hit and run that led to a police shooting. we want to show you this map which shows where both incidents happened. the hit and run happened in oakland on the west side of the caldecott tunnel. investigators say the entire episode began when a car hit a

motorcycle around 3:40 yesterday afternoon. the motorcyclist was hurt in that crash and the bike caught fire and that tied up the evening commute on highway 24. then later, a chp officer spotted a car matching the description of the one in the hit and run on wilder road, which is on the other side of the caldecott tunnel. investigators say there was some type of altercation that caused the officer to shoot the male driver. >> it's unfortunate this happened here, and it's, it's a really sad incident. it's pretty quiet and peaceful here, completely. very shocking something like this happened here. >> the hit and run suspect was taken to john mere medical center. the motorcyclist was treated at highland hospital. there is now a joint investigation with the highway patrol, the contra costa county sheriff's office and the district attorney's office. now to our continuing coverage of the crisis in egypt, a government spokesman announced this morning that egyptian authorities are considering outlawing the muslim brotherhood. cell phone video inside a mosque shows a stand-off

continuing at this hour between hundreds of brotherhood members and military troops. the brotherhood held what it called a day of rage yesterday to protest the recent military cowx. taliban militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades atact a camp in the western part of the country. nine contractors and a policeman were killed. in southern afghanistan, a roadside bomb killed five members of the same family. victims included women and children. iraq's foreign minister is in washington this weekend, asking the u.s. for aid. the request comes after a resurgence of violence without a major american presence, iraqi officials say al-qaeda has been quickly building up its forces. just last month, terror attacks killed more than a thousand people. for the first time in more than a year, california's unemployment rate is on the rise. the statewide unemployment rate increased to 8.7%, which is up

>> reporter: it was pretty incredible. this is my second implosion. this was definitely the more impressive of the two. i really felt the concussions from where i was, a little closer, a little more than 1400 feet away. you can see the demo, as you said, took place half hour ago. you can see obviously no warren hall. even the dust cloud is now gone. let's go ahead and show you what that looked like. it took 13 seconds. let's roll it right now. [ explosions ] >> reporter: a series of explosions and then a rumble, as warren hall, 41 years of history, came down in just 13 seconds. we talked earlier with cal state university east bay president leroy maurice. he said he has heard from the

demolitions crew that everything went off exactly as planned. that's exactly the news they were looking for. there's a nearby library building. they said that as the building started to settle, they had it so it would settle away from the library. it seems to have done exactly that. we haven't had a chance to get too close, but from our vantage point, we haven't seen any damage to the nearby buildings. we can also tell you that some of the curious onlookers here said it was absolutely spectacular. they said it absolutely delivered what they were hoping. they said they could feel the concussions, just like i felt. they did not feel the ground vibrate, but again, those vibrations certainly what the usgs was hoping to focus in on. just a minute ago, i spoke with a representative from the usgs. he said the data from the seismometers they placed in the area will take them months to sift through that data and figure out exactly what happened out here. they do say, though, that this event should have registered on

the usgs site, so we are going to be checking out that in a few minutes to see if in fact this did show up on the usgs site. one of the big things they are looking at, they want to figure out what the ground is like in the area. they are using the vibrations from the collapse of warren hall surrounding the heyward fault. that data is months away. coming back to our live shot, taking a look, you can see just a little bit of warren hall sticking up there, leaning, again, away from the library. we are hearing, again, from university president leroy maurice that crews could get in there as early as today to begin the process of clearing away what is left of warren hall. we will continue to monitor the situation out here. certainly a very exciting morning here on the cal state university of east bay campus. a lot of excitement out here. fans in the area, again, say

this absolutely delivered. christien kafton, ktvu. >> thanks, christien kafton. cal state east bay coupled pictures of onlookers at the kmart parking lot, in a special area set up for the public to catch a glimpse of the demolition. campus is scheduled to reopen 6:00 a.m. on monday. there are new questions about the opening of the new bay bridge. we want to show you a live picture this morning. there's the new bridge and the old bridge, side by side. now, work on the new span will continue through september 3rd, when it is scheduled to officially open. now, officials had originally planned a very large celebration that actually set aside $5.6 million in toll money to pay for that public event. then private funds were also raised for a fireworks show. but now, with a tight deadline, organizers have canceled the big bash, which was expected to draw some 200,000 people. so the question now is where does the money go? we're told contractors for the

event will still get paid for planning that's already been done. then the remaining money is going to go into the general fund. >> they are there. the commission made a decision to allocate them. we have a contract with a contractor. that contractor did a certain amount of work. we need to go through and figure it all out and we'll move on from there. >> there is still the possibility there will be some kind of large public party in the future. a celebration could be held once the bike path on the bay bridge is finished or when the existing span is torn down. parole has been revoked for a man considered a person of interest in the death of sandra coke. a federal investigator from oakland. 56-year-old randy alana violated parole by contacting coke, failing to charge his gps monitor, and resisting arrest. alana is a convicted sex offender who briefly dated coke 20 years ago. he was arrested for parole violation on august 6th, two days after coke was reported missing. her body was found last week in vacaville. police say they are still

investigating and no charges have been filed. a baby shot and killed last week in oakland has been laid to rest. yesterday, a funeral was held for a 16-month-old drew jackson. oakland mayor jean quan was among those attending services. baby drew and his father, 20- year-old andrew thomas, were shot to death as they slept at a relative's home in east oakland. so far, no arrests have been made in the case. $30,000 reward is being offered. prosecutors in contra costa county have filed additional child molestation charges against the concord teacher. the da's office says two more young people have come forward leading to 17 additional charges against this man, 45- year-old joseph andrew martin. he now faces a total of 109 charges. martin taught fifth grade. he had been at woodside elementary since 1991. martin was arrested in april and has pled not guilty. he faces life in prison, if convicted. closing arguments in the joseph naso murder trial will continue on monday morning.

the accused serial killer told the jury the prosecution's case is weak and circumstantial. 79-year-old naso is representing himself and is charged with killing four northern california women in the '70s and '90s. yesterday, in a marin county courtroom, for about five hours the former free-lance photographer told the jury stories, talked about the victims, how he knew them, but he said he never killed them. several times, naso did have to be admonished by the judge for discussing evidence that was never mentioned during the trial. >> mr. naso, dumb as a fox, what he's trying to do in his closing argument is testify. what he's doing now is trying to introduce evidence that was not brought in during the trial in his closing argument. you could tell the judge was losing patience with him. >> naso's closing argument is scheduled to continue monday morning at 9:00 a.m. as we approach labor day weekend, expect to see more sobriety check points. several cities, including san francisco and vallejo are holding dui check points tonight. san rafael had one last night. about a third of all traffic

deaths are alcohol-related, while on average police say more than a hundred people are killed on labor day weekend each year due to drunk driving. >> the dui check point is a very effective way to publicize the dangers of dui drivers and bring awaress to the problem. we're hoping people drive through here, read the pamphlet we give them. >> police say in a typical check point, they will stop about 1500 cars and arrest two to three people on dui charges. the message, they say, is to make people think twice before driving drunk. right here in the bay area, there are some big changes at the intersection of broadway and telegraph in oakland. a new pedestrian plaza is now open in historic latham square. it converts telegraph avenue, south of 16th street, to a pedestrian-only space with plenty of places for people to sit and enjoy the sights of the city. the plan is to keep the area pedestrian-only for at least the next six months. well, it's the last weekend people will be able to enjoy the amusement park on the peninsula.

after almost 35 years, the malibu grand prix in redwood city is set to close for good tomorrow. owners say the park just wasn't making enough money to stay open. people have been going there for miniature golf, go carts, batting pages and arcades since 1979. >> it was here before i got married and this is my grandchild here. how many years have been been going here? >> the doors are set to close at 8:00 tomorrow night. and a nice weekend for all the outdoor activities, except right in the immediate shoreline. definitely want to bundle up, with patchy fog nearby. san francisco camera shows two layers of cloud cover. the lower clouds here, and high clouds moving in from the south. that's why it has been feeling a bit muggy out there and that pattern will continue through the weekend. latest on the maps, you can see on live storm tracker 2, the live satellite loop. you can see the high clouds favoring the southern half of the way area, moving south to north. current temperatures are warming up.

you can see fran, 60 degrees. santa rosa, 63. mid to upper 60s toward fairfield, concord, livermore. san jose right now checking in at 64. the overall weather pattern is kind of an interesting one developing for the weekend. this area of low pressure remains offshore. today will be a little bit cooler, but not much change from yesterday. we're still thinking lower 90s inland. into your sunday, this area of low pressure backs off and the heat work its way back in. tomorrow, easily the warmest day of the weekend. that will translate to mid to upper 90s. also this southerly flow will transport some moisture into the bay area by monday and as a result, we could be talking about the chance of an isolated thunderstorm. not this weekend. we'll fast forward into sunday and notice the overall flow. high clouds, even a few showers develop right around lake tahoe. you'll see lots of high clouds moving in monday afternoon. some showers to our south, close enough to the bay area that we do have to bring in the chance of an isolated

thunderstorm on monday, and a slight chance on tuesday and a chance on wednesday. the monday through wednesday timeframe, we'll have to keep an eye on thunderstorm chances and also this. fire danger, fair danger will be on the increase. as a result, fire weather watch kicking in for the northern california mountains, including the sierra. there is a chance it could include parts of the bay area as we approach monday. nothing issued yet, but something we'll be watching for the timeframe. forecast highs this afternoon, 64 degrees. santa rosa at 90. napa, upper 80s at 89. temperatures will check in about 3:00 this afternoon. oakland, mid-70s. over the hills, lower 90s toward antioch and brentwood. san jose, partly sunny skies once again and muggy, 82 degrees. cupertino, same deal, lower 80s. san francisco, clouds in the morning, partly sunny this afternoon, upper 60s. looking ahead, tomorrow easily a big bump in the numbers. warmest locations, upper 90s. there is a chance of an isolated thunderstorm on monday, slight chance on tuesday, and once again, chance of a thunderstorm on wednesday. we'll be watching for the changing weather pattern in the

long range. . as students head back to school, health officials in contra costa county are worried about whooping cough. this year, contra costa county has seen 50 cases of whooping cough. that's double from last year. the last time the county saw a spike was three years ago when 200 cases were reported. by the end of that year, there were 9000 cases statewide. health officials are worried there could be another spike this year. >> we do know there are people out there who are sick and don't get diagnosed. they can unknowingly spread it to a newborn who can become very, very sick. >> marin county is also seeing a spike in cases. however, in alameda county, the health department is seeing fewer cases than it did at this time last year. today, free backpacks and school supplies will be given away at two back-to-school events in oakland. the first one started just about 40 minutes ago at oakland city hall. today, the shiloh church will also host a back-to-school event. that one starts in a little over an hour, at 11:00 in the

. good saturday morning. a neat shock looking out towards san jose. high clouds definitely moving into the region. this afternoon, san jose, partly sunny, forecast high in the low 80s. the curiosity rover has captured new video from mars, showing two moons of mars passing each other. the larger moon is seen moving in front of the smaller moon. astronomers say images will help researchers make more precise measurements of the two moons' orbits. political leaders from california and nevada are headed to the sierra community for the 17th annual tahoe summit. former vice president al gore is scheduled to give the keynote speech monday at nevada's sand harbor state

park. one issue up for discussion will be finding private money to supplement restoration projects. the summit follows some tension between california and nevada about how to balance lakeside development with environmental protections. a 12-year-old girl in michigan is recovering this morning from a bear attack. abigail weatherall was attacked thursday night while running on her grandfather's property in wexford county in northern michigan. authorities say abigail tried to outrun the black bear, but it eventually knocked her down. she suffered some deep cuts and puncture wounds on her thigh, but she is expected to recover. >> a neighbor heard her screaming and came out, hollering themselves. that's when the bear took off. >> neighbors say black bears are not unusual in the area, but it is unusual, they say, for them to attack people. wildlife officials have set traps in that area to try to catch that particular bear. three new animals have arrived at a fresno county wildlife park, where a lion march. a volunteer back in

wildlife officials posted these photos on their facebook page showing the new tiger and leopard cubs. in march, a male lion killed 24- year-old diane hanson. investigators think the animal slipped out of its cage while she was cleaning an outdoor lion's enclosure at the time. one of the tigers at the park have been named diana in honor of the woman killed. more than 170 people are missing after a ferry crashed into a cargo ship and sank near a central philippine port. the ferry was sank. a disney shuttle bus on its way to the park hit a car. a woman's car was stopped in the middle of the road yesterday afternoon and the bus slammed into the back of it. more than 30 people were on board the bus and two suffered minor injuries. the woman was taken to the hospital where she was

pronounced dead. disney released a statement saying we offer heart felt condolences to the family and friends of the driver who passed away. there is a new warning about brightly colored laundry detergent packets after a baby died from eating one. the medical examiner has not determined if the 7-month-old baby choked on the pod or if he was poisoned by the liquid detergent. officials say this is likely the first death linked to the laundry detergent packets. so far this year, about 5700 children age five or younger have been sickened by eating laundry detergent packets. if you own a chevy cruze, general motors is recalling nearly 293,000 of the compact cars because the power-assisted brakes can fail. it affects 2011 and 2012 model years that have 1.4-liter turbo charged engines. it also affects the 60/40 six- speed automatic transmission models. it's the eighth recall for the car since it was introduced back in 2010. new this morning, president

. 9:53 on the clock. following top stories this morning -- [ explosion ] >> you saw it live right here on ktvu, a four-decade-plus old building came crashing down at cal state east bay. administrators say they are pleased as the implosion of warren hall went off without a hitch. as a precaution, the school will remain closed until monday morning at 6:00 a.m. shots fired overnight in oakland, killing two people, on 105th avenue and knight street across from aspire lionel wilson college prep. in arrests were made. a little more than an hour from now, it will be the start of the san jose gay pride

festival. this year, couples can get married. there will be a matrimonial grove, featuring a wedding chapel. we are now hearing from the california teacher who helped rescue a woman bitten by a shark off the shores of maui. 57-year-old rick moore of orange county says he jumped into action when he heard a snorkler scream. the shark had attacked a 20- year-old german tourist off the coast. moore says he swam to the badly bleeding woman, helped her into a kayak, then got her to shore. the woman did survive the attack, but lost her arm. >> she was in and out of consciousness, saying words, i'm dying, i'm going to die. i kept saying, no, you're not! we're going to get you to shore. we're going to save you. >> the woman remains in critical condition. wednesday's attack was the fifth shark attack off the shores of maui in recent months. a peninsula high school is trying to put an end to students going a bit wild. it has become a bit of a
