burned through this five acres of dry brush. you can see the damage that was done here. a few buildings were threatened for a short time. in the end no damage was done to them. while the cause of this particular fire is unclear, dry lightning will be a big concern for firefighters across the bay area as we move throughout the day. a red flag warning went through midnight. the forecast calls for thunderstorms bringing gusty conditions, winds more than 25 miles per hour and the possibility of dry lightning. the lightning is a major concern for fire crews because the brush is so dry right, now, in most areas. we stopped by a cal fire station in the south bay where extra firefighters and additional engines are on stand by because of these conditions. cal fire is modifying how it responds to calls to keep crews free in case lightning does spark a fire. with a number of large

wildfires burning across southern california resources are limited. >> we don't have the normal resources that we would given the conditions in the state. >> reporter: in an effort to spot fires early on they'll be stationing lookouts on peaks and in the south bay and north bay. they're going to try to get crews on to those fires early on and those lookouts will be put in place beginning later on this morning. firefighters will have to stay on their tows until early wednesday morning and that's when the red flag warning is expected to be lifted. alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. more than 5,000 firefighters are battling fires across the state.

many have had to force the evacuation of hundreds of people. there could be a situation that's worse. the only fire that is close to be contained is in fresno county. this fire in beautiful county are forcing people and animals from their homes. one woman who has lived in the area 30 years called it the worst nightmare of her life. it has burned 2,000 acres. firefighters in southern california was able to get ahead of a grass fire sparked by a car fire. it caused a traffic backup for miles. it burned 170 acres before crews gained the upper hand. in idaho firefighters say they're making progress in a major wildfire that portioned an evacuation of hundreds of

woman and forcing her -- trying to force her into prostitution. they are accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a victim in come ton on thursday. the victim managed to escape and told deputies that they were planning to force her into prostitution. we have more information on a man's fall off a cliff. the 25-year-old man is fighting for his life after falling 100 feet to the beach below. it happened yesterday afternoon outside of the ritz-carlton hotel. he was rushed to the medical center where at last check he was listed in critical condition. they have banned firefighters from using helmet cameras. one fire truck ran over and killed the 16-year-old

passenger in the chaotic moments after the crash. the chief says it's an issue of firefighter and victim privacy. it has sparked a debate with firefighters across the country. >> the chief has to be sensitive about what they let their employees do because they can be liability. they are now considering their next move in a contract dispute poot many commuters thought were settled. the union is representing 800 transit workers. the union workers include bus drivers, dispatchers and clerical workers. the vote is at 256 yes, and 576 no. >> a pretty strong no vote.

. welcome back. the time now is 4:44 a firefighters in central idaho say they're making progress against a wildfire that has burned almost 160 square miles. the fast moving fire has forced the evacuation of 2300 homes in coach he 'em and sun valley.

it's turned the city into a ghost town with most people staying inside or avoiding the area. >> all the business owners are depressed about it. august is a big month for us from coffee shops, bike shops to ski shops. people don't want to go out in the smoke. more than 1200 people and 19 aircraft have been called in to fight the fire as well. we have new information this morning about a house fire in san jose that killed 100 cats. the home belonged to carol miller. she's responsible for a nonprofit that cares for feral cats. she got accused of animal cruelty and hearing. she denies the charges and took care of the cats.

new this morning the olympian oscar was in jail. he faces 25 years in prison if he's convicted in the murder of his girlfriend. he said he shot her by mistake thinking she was an intruder. it is set to begin next year. two buses carrying police officers killed 25 people. nearly 1,000 people have been killed in clashes between government security. some are calling on president obama to assist. >> there are many areas where we could exercise influence over the generals and we're not

back room at the time and fortunately she was not hurt. she is now staying with a family. they're calling an end to the violence after deadly shootings, 12 people were shot in less than 24 hours. one of those killed was a 39- year-old who was driving to an east oakland mcdonald's who was shot along with her boyfriend who survived. the five-year-old boy was in the car and he was not hurt and is in child care services. what can be done to stop the violence? they say it's partly because of the lack of job opportunities. >> you want to let them know, the kid, everybody is good, everybody has a good side. so, when you see things like this, you don't know where to

start. >> police have not released a motive or suspect descriptions of any of the shootings and they do not appear to be connected. today the berkeley man who went at a rampage naked at the bart station is back in court. he performed acrobatic stunts and is accused of kicking a bart employee and grabbing passengers. he pleaded not guilty and he says he remembers very little of that incident. his attorney says he's clearly suffering a mental breakdown. students return to the classroom this month, they're likely to see something new. many california teachers are training on the new standards. the standards do not go into effect until the 2015 school year. many of them are starting to accumulate -- incorporate the
