fire crews bracing for a busy day with a threat of lightning strikes in the forecast. we have team coverage. we hear from oakland police in the wake of a violent weekend. three people killed and nine others shot. working to remove a whale from a marin county beach after it washed ashore and died this morning. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. right now, a weather alert is in effect across parts of the

bay area because of dangerous fire conditions. ktvu's alex savidge will tell us about how crews are preparing in a moment but first, we begin our team coverage with steve paulson who explains the weather conditions outside. well, it's a tale of three different forecasts. if you are near the coast, fog or sun. if you are south bay or parts of the peninsula, it's mostly sunny. although there's one little band of clouds going through the south bay. north bay and parts of the east bay. a lot of clouds, mostly cloudy. it's cool, warm, hot, muggy. a little low off central california is producing a lot of cloud cover and it will be with us through thursday morning. i think a bert opportunity for showers is tuesday. the red flag warning is out for lightning, for causing fires. it's very dry and hot. already 93 in livermore. yesterday they were 102. san francisco is 61. half moon bay, also 61.

a huge difference. watch the clouds streaming in. you can see they are definitely taking aim more towards the east and north bay. some of that looks like it wants to produce rain. not too much. anything reported. but as you go up to the sierra. there's lot spinning off the sper. the afternoon -- sierra. the afternoon heating helps. we'll have a couple of days where we'll be in line for this, more coming up in our weather segment. since sunday there have have been 2500 lightning strikes sparks fires. their is according to calfire. sal castanedo has more about a close call for crew in the contra costa county and how they are preparing for more fires. >> reporter: hosing down fields, east contra costa firefighters were working this morning to make sure this brush fire would not flare back up. it started at 8:00 last night and quickly burned through fike

acres. it was pretty big. the flames were up high and the wind picked up right around then t was moving fast towards the houses. >> reporter: nerve-racking for neighbors but firefighters were able to get the flames under control before any homes were damaged. and now he's crews are bracing for more employerups like this one with a -- flareups like this one with a red flag warning in effect. the chief believed this fire was sparked by a power line. but the concern for firefighters dry lightning. the forecast today and tomorrow calls for gusty conditions and a lot of lightning strikes for the inland areas. couple that with extremely dry brush and you have a dangerous combination. >> it's very useful to have multiple -- it's very common to have multiple fires burning at the same time. we're already spread thin. >> reporter: three stations were shut down. high fire danger means a worried fire chief. marks -- mark parson watched

anxiously. >> started to move things out of the way, anticipating it was gonna come this way but thank god it never did. >> reporter: crews got the upper hand on this fire. now they are gearing up for the next one. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. the so-called american fire has grown to nearly 15,000 acres. it's burning in the tahoe national forest and is 49% contained. fire crews expect full containment by the end of the month. and across the state, more than 5,000 firefighters are battling ten different fires according to calfire. one of the largest is burning in butte county where nearly 2,000 acres have already burned. that fire is 45% contained but is still threatening more than 400 homes. in just about an hour, we are expecting to find out the cause of the deadly limo fire that killed five women on the san mateo bridge back in may. the completed reports on the incident are scheduled to be

released today at 1:00. ten people were in that limo when it burst into flames on may 4th. four women and the driver escaped. but five other people, including a new bride, were killed. new 911 calls are also expected to be released. we will be live streaming the news conference. you can watch it at 1:00 on ktvu.com. oakland police are investigating what neighbors say is a possible murder- suicide that happened early this morning. a father and his adult daughter were found dead inside their home on fruitvale avenue near tiffin road. police say the woman, and elderly man were shot to death. although they've not been identified, neighbors say the woman was a quadriplegic and the father was suching from -- suffering from cancer. this comes on the heels of a violent weekend in oakland that included three other deaths and nine people injured by gunfire. brian flores just spoke to

police and join us live. what are they saying? >> reporter: no question, a very violent weekend in oakland. three people killed here in oakland. nine others injured. but police announced a few minutes ago they've made an arrest in one of those shootings. take a look at the map first. details where the shootings took place. four people were shot friday night two of which died. then on saturday, one person was shot before 11:00 a.m. four people were shot in a nail salon and another person was shot saturday night. oakland police have made an arrest on a quadruple shooting that injured four people -- that happened saturday afternoon around 4:00. this was a suspect who broke into a car off telegraph and was chased by witnesses. that suspect came back and opened fire and injured four people. police say as soon as they knew who it was, they were able to make an arrest quickly. >> we made an arrest late last night. this is due to a patrol officer, as soon as

investigators learned who was responsible for the shoot, they immediately put the information out to law enforcement. we have an officer here who observed that individual and was able to arrest him last evening. >> reporter: now, at last check, all of the victims are expected to survive. one is at least in critical condition. we're also learning a robbery last wednesday at grand nails -- grand and oakland where three to four men robbed women while they were getting their nails done. the men wore masks and got away with cash and some jewelry. at this point, oakland police are working on several cases. many of the shootings are under investigation. they plan to release more information about this latest arrest and the shooting off testify le graph as well as what happened on fruitvale this afternoon -- telegraph as well as what happened on fruitvale this afternoon. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland continues to search for a new police chief, the

fourth in four years. mayor quan hopes to hire a new chief as soon as possible. she says there will be a variety of challenges, including persistent violence, scarce resources and a tough, political environment. one councilman wants a chief with a no-nonsense atty tud who will ignore the mayor's crime- fighting advice. john burris just wrapped up a news conference outlining a lawsuit that he's filing against the city of hayward on behalf of lester chambers. the 73-year-old man was attacked while a woman while performing at a blues festival in hey ward last month. the 43-year-old woman has been charged with felony assault and elder abuse. she told police she has a stress disorder and a repetitive part of the song chambers was singing caused her to snap. joseph naso was delayed

today because of a message written on a truck. he was acting as his own attorney and was supposed to continue with closing arguments today. but his investigator saw some writing on the windows of a truck in the parking lot today. it read "joseph naso is charged with killing my sister" the truck's owner is the brother of one of naso's alleged victims. he had written a similar message on the truck last week. at naso's request, the judge is asking each juror if they saw the writing. a.c. transit workers are now considering their next move in a contract dispute that many commuters thought was already settled. over the weekend, the union representing 1800 -- 1800 a.c. transit workers rejected the contract reached this month. some think in the wake of b.a.r.t.'s negotiations, union workers may have trouble getting public support. the atmosphere, especially with b.a.r.t -- maybe b.a.r.t.'s tainted the atmosphere. i don't know that the public

opinion is gonna be on the workers' side. >> union leaders say they will meet soon to review their options. so far a.c. transit management has not commented. as far b.a.r.t., there are still no scheduled talks between the two sides. b.a.r.t. and its unions have not had any contract talks as the judge ordered a 60-day cooling off period eight days ago. the two sides are reportedly waiting for a mediator to set a new schedule so negotiations can continue. that cooling off period ends on october 10th. an investigation is underway into the drowning of the teenager near lake tahoe. a dive team recovered the body, javon green on saturday in lake tahoe's emerald bay. he was vacationing with his family from the l.a. area. he was swimming friday when he went under the water and vanished. the cause of death is under investigation. >> reporter: authorities say five people from the are responsible for kidnapping a teenager and trying to force her to be a prostitute. you will hear what the

the south bay are arrested in the kidnapping of a southern california woman and forcing her into prostitution. but janine de la vega spoke to the suspect's brother about the case and he revealed some surprising information. >> reporter: this man is in disbelief that his brothers are accused of kidnapping and trying to pimp and 18-year-old girl. he is also shocked that the brother on the left is using his identity. i says bawg is not his name. it's his -- says more had -- says horrington is not his brother. he is. >> he's probably just scared. >> reporter: riverside county sheriff's department says ana ceja of san jose is prostitute and along with the four men kidnapped a woman at gunpoint off the streets of corpton. they say two slaulted her and drove her to a hotel 50 miles away in moreno valley. the men had the victim as a

best western, somehow they were distract and she glot to the lobby -- got to the lobby and they called police. >> she was very distraught. >> reporter: authorities arrested the five suspects as they were trying to leave the hotel. they were booked and taken to a -- taken to jail. >> i know they don't kidnap people and force people into sex trades and things like that. i've never seen them with those kind of weapons. >> reporter: horrington says the victim is a prostitute and tried to set them hup. >> we'll look into that. even if it was determined she was a prostitute, that doesn't mean she can't be a victim. >> reporter: authorities say it's still an active investigation and are looking into the possibility there may be other victims involved. in gilroy, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco's fire chief

has banned firefighters from using helmet-mounted video cameras. the decision from chief joanne heys white came came after the flight of the asiana plane crash last month. some residents disagree and feel the more firefighters wearing cameras the better. >> i think it's definitely relevant. i think we should definitely have it. we want the truth. >> the fire chief's office says this ban is nothing new. it points to a 2009 policy that prohibits firefighters from having recording devices of any kind. >> reporter: a protest strike by independent truckers have shut down part of the port of oakland. we've been showing you the lines and the line of trucks all morning long. the striking drivers blocked access to a number of berths at

the saa terminal. one trucker said they're forced to wait hours to load and unload shipping containers and they say there are no restrooms, no vacations and other poor working conditions. >> too much. over there, one guy is in the line three, four hours. all guys, no moving at all. >> >> port officials have stopped operations at the berth because of the pickets. thousands of san francisco children are back in class today for the first day of school and police will be out this afternoon to make sure they get home safely. there will be extra patrols near the city's schools tomorrow. police will be looking for drivers violating traffic laws and school zones -- in school zones where the speed limit is 15 miles an hour. >> drive safely, stop at the crosswalks for the children. take your time getting to work

and watch out for little kids. >> the school district has added 45 more crossing guards at intersections near schools. they are stationed on streets with high traffic and in air areas with -- areas with a history of accidents. we have a back-to-school section on our website and a slide show of kust -- and ktvu reporters from their school days. happening now, the qualifying race for the america's cup is underway. all but one race was postponed over the weekend because of high winds. in the single race that happened. luna rossa evened the score. the winner of the challenger's series faces oracle usa for the america's is up in september. protect -- cup in september. protecting lake tahoe. al boer is scheduled to give the keynote speech tonight of the 17th annual tahoe summit.

california lawmakers say one issue up for discussion will be finding private money to supplement restoration projects. the summit follows some tension between california and nevada about how to balance lakeside development with environmental protections. a wail that washed ashore today on a marin county beach has died. the fin whale is beached near wall law vista at -- walla vista at the northern end of stinson beach. it appeared weak but alive at the time at 7:00 a.m. marine experts and the fire department were called. they say the whale died around 10:00. the stinson beach fire chief says it's rare to see a live whale wash up at stinson beach. >> in the past, we used to have whiles wash up during a regular basis during the winter. i've never seen a live whale washed up on the beach.

>> no word why the whale died. a marine mammal center vet team is try tog move it away from the shore -- trying to move it away from the shore to conduct a necropsy today or tomorrow. the calendar says august but some of this looks like september. we get a little bit of cloud cover coming in. sunshine, very cool or very warm to hot for some. most of the cloud cover is in the north bay all associated with the little low spinning off the coast. you can see the signature of it. it will be here until wednesday night or thursday. as it does move, it will bring in some cooler air. but today there's warm readings inland. you can see the lines of rain and cloud lining up. there's fog on the coast. today, partly sunny, partly cloudy, muggy. some patches of fog on the coast as the low gets closer on even today the possibility of lightningicks exists. -- lightning exists. we have fog on the coast, hazy

skies from the fires. lightning, possible showers or thundershowers. again, maybe today but more likely i would think on tuesday or wednesday. it's really hot through the interior. you can see that in red there. very warm conditions. on the coast, 60s and mainly low 70s. 90s for some. livermore is 93. concord, 84. 64 san francisco. santa rosa, 78. 63 half moon bay to san jose's 83. the cloud cover continues to stream in. you can see there's some returns showing up on radar, anything that's falling would probably be very light. there's nothing that's lit up here but there will be later on. i will show you one up santa cruz and monterey. still going west to east -- or east too west back towards us. south bay you can see mostly sunny, parts of the peninsula as well. mostly sunny but it is muggy and human. lightning detection right off monterey. picked under a cell. that's closer to the low. but that's a sign of maybe things to come later on. a lot of this moisture will start to pick up. you get some of this afternoon

heating. we have some fog on the coast or sun. there's plenty of low clouds along. but sunny to mostly sunny. mostly cloudy. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. i mean, it's a warm, warm pattern. if you are inland and kind of muggy, we get the humidity factor way up there as well. temperatures, it looks like they will continue to inch downward over the next few days. i think they will cool down by wednesday and thursday. i don't think we're done until at least thursday morning and then looks better and quieter as we go into the weekend. next couple of day, lightning, fire, and thunderstorms a possibility. >> really, muggy, too. >> yes. unless you are by the coast. and the full moon is tomorrow. >> okay. thank you. the 49ers make a trade with the chiefs. why it's being called a swap of disappointing first round picks.

stock market, mostly lower today as worries about the recent rise in bond yields outweighing an advance in the technology sector thanks to a good investment report on intel. intel's stock is up almost 2% now. the dow is currently down 40. the nasdaq is down 3. s&p down 5. the san francisco 49ers have traded a.j. jenkins to the kansas city chiefs in exchange, the 49ers receive john bald wynn.

jenkins was the 9ers first round pick last year and baldwin was the 26th overall pick of the chiefs in 2011. he missed time his rookie season after getting hurt in a fight with a teammate and has prone to dropping passes. today's trade is the second significant deal between the chiefs and niners this year. after the 9ers exchained alex smith for a pair of draft picks. the giants plan to honor the boston marathon bombing victims tonight at home tonight against the red sox. local survivors of the bombing will participate in pre-game ceremonies. a portion from every sale will go towards the one boston fund which helps victims recover. today at 5:00 on ktvu news, three months after that deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge, we're expected to learn more today about exactly what went wrong. investigators are expected to release their findings at a news conference just 30 minutes from now. our views are digging for details and we'll have live
