jose. three people were shot there overnight. one of them died. and we have a reporter out there. this is a live picture of the scene. we will have an update with new information that we just received in just a couple of minutes. i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. >> i'm dave clark. steve, are you still worried about lightning this morning. >> not this morning but later this afternoon. thick fog out there. be careful coast and bay. some of that is reducing visibility. isolates showers, 60s 70s and 80s at noon. a lot more cloud cover and the wind has definitely picked up. it will not be as hot for some inland yesterday. the low is rotating around, still sending in a couple of bands moving north and west off shore but the red flag warning continues. temperatures a lot cooler today than yesterday. more 50s and 60s instead of the 70s. the wind has picked up.

gusts up to 30 plus. yesterday they were at 8 miles per hour. that is a huge difference. some of that cloud cover, there's a little blip skirting along going east to west. the main cloud deck has moved north. we are in line for fog and a possibility of lightning again. it equals a cooler pattern for those inland today. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. temps to the north are dependent on the cloud cover. >> good morning. we do have things to talk about in fremont on side roads. auto mall parkway near technology drive, there is an injury crash involving a big rig. this is near fremont boulevard. a lot of people use auto mall to get to the freeway. today you should use a different way. the traffic on 880 still looks good. let's move along and take a look at westbound bay bridge. metering lights have come on and traffic is backing up. i see flashing lights there in the background. there could be a stalled vehicle or something going on in the toll plaza area.

it's on the ramp from 880 to west 80. we will get to the bottom of that and figure it out. west 80 looks good coming in from the vallejo area. you can tell it is getting busier as you drive through. now, we did have a major crash in san jose early this morning. it happened about two hours ago on interstate 880 near stephens creek. tara is live in san jose to tell us how traffic is doing now. tara. >> reporter: good morning, sal. about 25 minutes ago, chp was able to clear the scene of the crash. if you take a look behind me, we're standing on the overpass and things are flowing nicely. the street sweeper came in and cleared the roadway. this was a major injury accident as sal mentioned. it happened just after 4:00 this morning. two vehicles crashed. a redford truck and a gray acura. the acura flipped and landed on its roof. a woman driver was trapped inside. emergency crews worked to extricate her from the car. both vehicles were blocking the

middle lanes. just before 4:30, the highway patrol had to shut all of the lanes down. the chp checked the southbound lanes for well for debris from the crash. we're not sure the extent of the injuries but we understand that they are major. luckily the medical center is close by. no word on the condition of the driver of the other car. all northbound lanes of 880 near stephens creek boulevard are once again open. >> we also have developing news this morning in san jose. police are looking for suspects in a shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. one person was killed, two others wounded. jeanine has new information now about the person who was killed. she joins us from the scene. >> reporter: well, police say that it appears that the man who died here from this shooting at the restaurant appeared to be an innocent bystander. sources tell me that friends

that were on the scene say he was an engineer that was just everyone joying a drink with friends. you can see crime scene investigators are here combing over the restaurant and looking for clues that may help lead to the shooter. shortly after 10:00 last night they received a report of multiple gunshots fired near the restaurant on allen rock and capital avenue. officers say about 15 people were inside the restaurant and three men were shot. all were rushed to the hospital where one died this morning from his injuries. the other two received superficial wounds and will survive. police say after speaking to witnesses, it appears whoever pulled the trigger did so from outside the restaurant. >> at this moment we're still determining what the suspect -- what the witnesses saw. we are in the preliminary stages of the investigation. it's hard to say if somebody will come forward to give us more information. >> reporter: police tell us nine shots were fired and as you can see, crime scene investigators this morning have

been taking photographs of all of the damage. at this point, there is no motive in the shooting and it is unknown if the restaurant was targeted. the victim's identity has not been released yet. all we know is what police have told us. the homicide victim in this was asian and appears to be in his 40s. >> time now is 6:06. a woman in danville was seriously hurt last night. hit by a car as she crossed the street. it happened about 9:00 last night on camino tasahara near sycamore valley park. the investigation shut down the road for several hours. now, police say the driver stopped and is cooperating. it's too early though to know what caused that crash. >> there's a lot of details that our traffic investigators will look at. they will look at the time of day. they will look at lighting. they try to establish a clear picture of what occurred. >> the woman is in critical but

stable condition. her name has not been released yet. this morning, there is still protesters at the historic berkeley post office, despite a police visit during the night. police once again warned the protesters they were trespassing and asked them to leave. one person was arrested. protesters have been camped on the post office steps since july 27th. they're trying to block the postal service from selling that historic building. >> continuing coverage now of the lightning around the bay area. this is video that one of our photographers took last night in san mateo county. quite a show. according to the national weather service, more than 11,000 lightning strikes were seen since 8:00 last night there. is chance that lightning will be seen today. steve says later today or tonight. even more expected tomorrow. that lightning has triggered a red flag warning which is still in effect for northern california. right now, cal fire is on high alert and has staffed reserve engines and brought in extra

people. cal fire pilots are on stand by just in case any fires are reported. this morning, firefighters at various command centers will be monitoring the weather and closely following any reported lightning strikes. >> all over the state, there are at least 11 wildfires burning right now. cal fire says nine of them are major. the late jest fire started yesterday in the sequoia national forest. lightning started it. one of the bigger fires burning right now in california is in the tahoe national forest northeast of auburn. it has burned almost 15,000 acres. national weather service has issued a red flag warning for that area beginning at 11:00 today. right now, it's 53% contained. the cause is still being investigated. in butte county, firefighters closer to containing a wildfire that is burning south of chico. this one has burned about 2100 acres since it started friday. one home was destroyed.

yesterday afternoon, about 400 people had been evacuated and had been allowed to return home. containment is about 64%. and one of the main entrances to the yosemite national park has been closed because of a fire. the fire started over the weekend but crossed state route 120 yesterday shutting it down in both directions. drivers are being rerouted to state route 140 or 41. about 800 acres have burned so far. some structures have been destroyed. campgrounds are also being evacuated. >> tonight the napa city council will discuss a recommendation from the police chief to ban medical marijuana dispen stores and retail s. currently there are no dispen stores and retail s in napa. with the current crackdown on dispen stores and retail s, the city opens itself up to prosecution if it does not issue a ban. time is 6:09. san francisco city attorney is demanding reimbursement from

nevada lawmakers for what he calls patient dumping. in a letter sent today, herrera says that nevada has been busing psychiatric patients to california cities. he has bus records to back up his claims. he wants all california cities reimbursed for any treatment provided. san francisco alone has spent $500,000. >> the time is 6:09. tonight a special event in san francisco marking a landmark event in the civil rights movement. it marks the 50th anniversary of dr. martin luther king's famous i have a dream speech in 1953. it includes speakers talking about dr. king's legacy. the speakers including dr. benjamin jones senior, a former speech writer, lawyer and advisor to martin luther king junior. ed lee will speak on stage too. >> 6:10 is the time. new details on a deadly hit and run. the truck police are now

>> we have continuing coverage now of the situation in egypt. the country's military-backed rulers continue their crackdown against the muslim brotherhood arresting the spiritual leader. the arrest is the latest blow to the supporters of former president morsi. we are getting a better sense this morning about u.s. aid to egypt. senior bank of america administration owe firms say it is under review. kyla campbell is following the story from washington, d.c. you're getting a word on getting details from the white house. >> reporter: pam, i did just speak to my contact a few minutes ago. she pointed me to the white how's news conference from yesterday. spokesman said that the obama administration is evaluating the $1.3 billion in military aid give tony egypt each year. he says that the president will first make sure that any

decision to suspend aid would be in the best interest of the national security of the u.s. and secondly the administration needs to make sure that the u.s. is meeting its legal obligations since it promised funding to egypt. the state department says that officials will work with the white house and congress to review the situation in egypt. this comes after deadly clashes between the interim government's military and supporters of the ousted president left about 1,000 people dead. the white how's says there are consequences for the egyptian military attacking the people. >> the time is 6:15. new developments in the nsa scandal. the editor of the guardian newspaper says he was forced by british authorities to destroy computer hard drives containing material leaked by edward snowden. this follows the detention of the brazilian partner of the

guardian journalist who first published u.s. intelligence secrets leaked by snowden. miranda was on his way home from when he was questioned at the airport for nine hours. he says that british authorities questioned him, took away his laptop and his cell phone. stanford university is increasing online secured. that's after two hacker attacks in the past couple of months. most recent was just last month. hackers broke into the main computer network for the second time since may. administrators now warning this latest attack was apparently launched from an overseas location. and it closely resembled other recent attacks on american universities and companies. >> san diego mayor is believed to be working out a settlement with one of his accusers. he was spotted out in public for the first time in about three weeks. he went in for a mediation

session regarding his future. the attorney representing one of the we will who is suing the city and the mayor for sexual harassment was also there. cindy chavez will be sworn in tonight. she was elected in a special election on july 30th to replace former supervisor. he resigned after pleading guilty to charges related to misusing public funds. >> the time is now 6:16. later today there will be a funeral for a father who was hot and killed two weeks ago along with his one-year-old son in east oakland. 20-year-old andrew thomas and his son drew were shot to death while they were asleep at a relative's home. little baby drew was laid to rest friday. so far no arrestshave been made. a $30,000 reward is being offered in this case. >> the nfl celebrating the league's only perfect season with the miami dolphin fibs today at the white house. it was more than 40 years after the accomplishment.

it was back in 1972. the team will be honored by the president. in return, the dolphins will honor the president with a leather bound book commemorating the season in the dolphins win over the redskins in super bowl 7. the team wasn't able to make it to the white house following the win because of the watergate scandal. in the meantime, slugger alex rodriguez taking a swing against major league baseball and his own team. how his representatives say the team lied to a-rod about a career ending injury. >> sal, what just happened in fremont? >> it's a crash on -- i'm so used to saying that. a crash on auto mall parkway at technology drive. let me show you where it is in case you're not familiar. it's where i drew the white line. if you drive that way every day you know that's a major route for people to get between 680 and 880. right now it's blocked at

technology drive near fremont boulevard with an injury crash. a big rig was involved. people are injured. watch for slow traffic in the area. we recommend using an alternate route to auto mall parkway for the time being. looking at westbound 80, the traffic is moving along okay. on the upper subpoena lower deck of the bay bridge. the traffic is -- the traffic is doing okay. but the lights are out. so we do have some people who might be a little bit startled by that. some of the lights are on the upper and lower deck of the bay bridge. we will try to get a picture of the bridge for you next time. westbound bay bridge is backed up for about a 15-minute delay. 6:19. let's go back to steve. >> our back to school forecast. we focus here real quick so you can see it, west contra costa county. el cerrito will be closer to 68. focusing on hercules.

low clouds. high is upper 60s to low 70s. temperatures cooling down. big thunderstorm activity has moved off. i will show you what developed last night coming up in a second. we're not done. that will spin in cloud cover. the red flag warning continues. maybe another round of lightning although things have calmed down a little bit right now. some of the higher elevations are down 15 degrees. the west wind is showing itself up. yesterday it was calm. we're seeing a westerly direction. i have seen temperature drops very significant. some of that cloud cover continues to move back in. we're not done yet. it is lifting a little north but coming around the central valley. we could get isolated showers. show you last night. put this in motion. right there. back over towards the peninsula and then san jose, that was another round. we will do this one more time so you can see it going back 18 hours. it will start and now we will start it up again. this is what happened last

night. the line is forming by half moon bay. it stretches back across the pens l here is the second round. things have moved off into the pacific. it is still out here far enough way that we don't have to worry about it yet. fog, sun, possible showers. lightning later this afternoon. a little afternoon heating although it will be much cooler today than yesterday. not the 100s that they had for inland areas yesterday. still unsettled weather into thursday. i don't think this low gets far enough away until after thursday. then things cool down into the weekend. >> thank you, steve. well, twitter filled with support for what could be the most obvious feature of a new iphone. there are reports that apple will have its newest iphone in three colors, black, white and a champagne gold. only the sides and back will be gold. the front will be white. apple is not commenting on the reports. it is expected to unveil a new

>> the time is 6:24. 87-year-old dick van dyke is luckily to be alive after being rescued from that burning car on a los angeles freeway. this shows the car moments after it burst into flames yesterday afternoon. a man saw the smoke, ran over, and he pulled van dyke out of that car. he was not hurt. >> not only that, there was a fireman and a nurse and a cop that happened to be passing by. >> wow. >> somebody is looking after me. >> that qualifies as lucky. firefighters say a flat tire may have started the car being on fire. well, all of california's top-selling cars in the first half of this year are from

japan. the toyota prius is still number one. nearly 34,000 of the hybrids were sold between january and june. the prius was a top seller in california for all of 2012. now the other top cars are the honda civic, the honda accord, toyota camry and toyota corollas. the car deals say new vehicle sales are up almost 12 and a half percent from last year. >> alex rodriguez is fighting back against major league baseball and the new york yankees. his attorney is now going public with serious accusations. he says the yankees let rodriguez play during the 2012 post season despite an mri scan by a team doctor this showed a serious injury to his left hip. a-rod's attorney spoke to cnn. >> the amazing part of that is that was never shared with alex rodriguez at the time. he was sent off to play -- >> when you say it wasn't shared, what do you mean? >> he wasn't told about it. >> major league baseball

suspended rodriguez through the 2014 season claiming that he used performance enhancing drug. he is being allowed to play while he appeals the suspension. >> practice day for the racing yachts. they return to the bay tomorrow in the yacht race. the organizers hope for a smooth day. sailing has been taking place for six weeks and they have been plagued by accidents and mechanical problems. there were a number of big problems over the weekends. some of the catamarans may be too big for the gusty winds of san francisco bay. time now is 6:27. a home invasion reported in pittsburgh. we're live on the scene now. we will have the latest details that we're hearing about the family. >> investigators are on the scene of san jose's 31st homicide of the year. we will tell you where police say the bullets came from and what we're learning about the victim. >> also the opening bell is

up. nothing intense yet but they're filtering in. farther south more sun. partly to mostly cloudy. possible lightning again this afternoon. but there is a westerly breeze in place that was not there yesterday. so 60s, 70s, 80s for some. not as hot as yesterday. here is sal. >> right now traffic is going to be affected by -- or not affected on the bridge but it is going to be slow. the lights are out on the eastern span -- on the western span of the bay bridge. outages reported on both the upper and lower decks. crews are aware of it and we will let you no he what is happening. traffic is still slow at the total plaza it's anormally is. you can see traffic is moving along slowly at the toll plaza. no major problems getting into the area. as a matter of fact once you get on to the bridge, the traffic is moving along relatively well. i do want to mention that traffic on the upper deck of the bay bridge is going to be

moving well into san francisco. looking at the maps, westbound 580 through livermore, the traffic is a little bit slow on the pass. it's 6:32. let's go back to the desk. >> this morning, police in san jose are looking for suspects in a shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. one person was killed, two others were wounded. we have new details about the person who died. jeanine joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: homicide detectives just arrived on the scene in the last 30 minutes to take over this investigation at this vietnamese restaurant. initially it began as a triple shooting. a couple hours ago one of the men who was shot here died. sources tell me that his friends who were at the scene say that he was actually an engineer. police say shortly after 10:00 last night, bullets came flying inside the restaurant at allen rock avenue near capital. officers say it appears whoever fired the shots were outside.

three men were hit by bullets and rushed to the hospital. one of the men died at about 2:00 a.m. the other two suffered superficial wounds and will survive. one witness heard the gunfire but didn't want to give her name. >> there were two or three shots. we didn't pay attention to it. about 20 minutes later, there were five shots. >> reporter: police say there's no word on what led up to the gunfire. they don't have any suspect information at this point. what we do know is that police tell us that the victims were all asian who appear to be in their 40s. now, it's unknown if the restaurant was targeted in any way. but police have told us, again, it appears that those victims were innocent bystanders. reporting live from san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the time is 6:34. we're finding out more about a deadly hit and run crash in san jose. carlton ford was hit and killed

saturday night by a pickup truck on allen rock avenue around 8:45 that night. witnesses described a truck to investigators but say it was too dark to see the driver. the chp is investigating if it's connected to another hit and run involving a pickup truck that happened friday night. >> i think that's horrible. i think anybody that would leave somebody out in the middle of the street is horrible. >> now, investigators say they have got a good description of the truck that was involved. they're looking for a '90s ford pickup truck with front end damage. the truck is either white or light-colored with a red stripe down the hood. if you have seen that truck, get in contact with the chp. >> we have new information now about the arrest of a surf instructor in santa cruz. santa cruz police are now saying that the investigation could be handed over to the federal government. 38-year-old dylan griner ais cued of make inappropriate advances and taking photos of

two teenage girls. he was arrested on friday. now police say they have received calls from possible victims' families living as far away as new york. he is expected in court tomorrow. the california highway has released its report on the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. five women were killed when that lincoln town car they were in burst into flames. investigators have ruled that the fire was un-- an unforeseeable accident ask that the limo driver will not face any criminal charges. >> the primary catalyst of the tragedy was the catastrophic failure of the rear suspension system that allowed the vehicle's drive shaft to come into contact with the floor pan. >> investigators also conclude that the limo driver was not on a cell phone test the fire as previously reported. >> the time is 6:36. continuing cover rang now. the lightning around the bay area. look at that. so far most of the lightning has been seen in san matey i

don't and santa cruz counties. more is forecast for today and tomorrow. a lot of last night's lightning was reported in pacifica. that is where alex savage is with the light show up in the sky. good morning. >> good morning to you, dave. firefighters were on high alert with all of the lightning strikes around the bay area. people in the area and on the peninsula enjoyed what was a spectacular light show last night. let's show it to you here. here is the incredible video. this was taken by a ktvu photographer. lightning reported down in santa cruz county light rain as well. according to the national weather service, more than 11,000 lightning strikes were seen around the bay area since 8:00 last night. the majority of the strikes were out over the water. this has firefighters worried. red flag warning remains in effect across northern

california with lightning and strong winds leading to high fire danger. they have staffed reserve engines and brought in extra firefighters just in case a large fire breaks out. yesterday we were at the cal fire air attack base at the sonoma airport where crews were ready to respond to lightning- sparked fires. one plane had to turn around and return to the airport. >> the clouds can make things more challenging for the pilot. >> it can drive the plane into the ground. >> it can. >> crews plan to be back up in the air today to respond to any fires that may spark because of lightning in the area. although according to the national weather service, the lightning has let up. but there is the possibility of

new 49ers stadium gets closer to completion. they're two weeks ahead of schedule and more than halfway down. the goal is to have the stadium ready by next june, two months before the preseason. $26million a month was spent installing the concrete and steel. this year they have been focusing on the inside of the stadium, spending about $37 million a month. >> all right. right now it is 6:40. a new surprising twist in the hannah anderson kidnapping case. what the suspect left behind for one of her family members. >> plus, closer to completion. what happened over the weekend that is good news for the bay bridge's new spans opening day. >> and we have trouble on one of the city's busiest streets. look at this crash. this big rig flipped over in this violent collision. it looks like someone was taken out of that vehicle. we will tell you what happened coming up. we have a reporter on the

fremont. the street is blocked off as the investigation continues. we will have a live report from tara who is on the scene and has spoken with investigators. but obviously just by looking at these pecktures, this was a very violent collision. it doesn't look like they will be clearing it any time soon. let's go back to the desk. >> the opening of the new span of the bay bridge is a step closer now. ktvu has learned that the temporary fix for the broken bolts is complete. over the weekend crews finished installing steel shims. the permanent repairs is not expected to be ready until december. in the meantime, later today, the bridge oversight committee will give an undate on the construction work that will take place before the bridge is closed next week. ktvu news has learnedthat bart plans to have 14 of its stations running around the clock during the bay bridge closure. the bart stations will stay open 24 hours a day starting

wednesday, august the 28th. they will be offering overnight service once an hour to bart riders all over the bay. the bart will also run longer trains during the day with as many as ten cars. they will also provide special service for weekend events including oakland a's games. transportation experts don't expect huge traffic problems  during the five-day bridge closure. >> in previous years, things slowed down a little bit in some select locations. but at no point was the bay area brunt to grid lock. >> now, all of the bart trains will stop early tuesday morning, september the 3rd, for required inspections and maintenance. that's the same morning that the new bay bridge is due to open. now, ktvu.com has a lot of coverage for you dedicated to the new bridge and next week's bridge closure. just go to it. look for the link right on the front page under hot topics.

residents in a pittsburgh neighborhood are on alert after a home invasion robbery last night that injured a woman. ktvu's brian flores is out there now with more on what happened out there and how that victim is doing this morning. brian. >> reporter: hi, dave. good morning. we understand that female victim is expected to be okay. this is where it happened. this home right here on the 1,000 block of bending willow way in pittsburgh. we have been able to confirm through law enforcement sources that the robbery happened late last night. we understand that a woman was inside at the time and perhaps one or two men enters the home from a back window. that woman was pistol-whipped while the men went through the home. we don't know what they got away with or if there was anyone else at home at the time. we did speak to neighbors this morning. they didn't want to speak on camera. from what they tell me through the police department, the men entered the second-story window by possibly stacking up trash cans. the neighbor told me that they went through the kids' room.

we don't know the kids' condition at this time. neighbors are shaken up this morning. we understand that the husband of the victim was away from the home during the incident. we have yet to hear from pittsburgh police so we don't have a suspect description or more information to give. we hope to gather more information as the morning goes on. we're live here in pittsburgh. brian flores, ktvu news. >> for information about a man killed in a shootout after kidnapping hannah anderson. the suspect left $112,000 to hannah anderson's pa ternal grandmother. the mother and brother were found dead inside of a home. they're not sure why the money was left to the family but believe it was to benefit hannah. jury deliberations in the case against joseph naso will resume at 9:30 this morning. the jury will begin its first full day of deciding the fate of the murder suspect. he is acting as his own

attorney. he finished closing arguments late yesterday. he is charged with first degree murder for the i will canning of four northern california women in crimes dating back to the 1970s. he has insisted he is innocent of the crimes. a trial for an ex danville police officer accused of being part of a dui scheme. former private investigator butler told steven to arrest certain men for dui. in exchange, butler says that he gave him cocaine and a gun. prosecutors plan to call their first witnesses to the stand today. >> the time is now 6:48. college tuition keeps growing but so does financial aid. 71% of all undergrads receive some financial aid in the last school year. that's up 5% from 2007. the latest numbers show 42% of undergrads receive federal grants. 40 percent received federal loans. those numbers are up. but aid from states and the

goes into thursday. possibility of thunderstorm activity. most of that has moved off- shore you see it rotating around the low. drier air is coming in. still clouds coming across. noticeably cooler and a stronger sea breeze than yesterday. the low cloud deck has made it farther as well. westerly breeze in place. big difference compared to yesterday. so inland temps will be cooler. they will be, i promise. some of these showers still popping up along the deck line. san jose is mostly clear except for fog. clouds could easily pop up later on. we get afternoon heating. this is last night. the line of thunderstorms that formed over the bay around pacifica was well rotate right here. it takes you back -- right there. right there. you can see the associated lightning with it. that is pushed well off. there are lightning strikes but out in the pacific, far away.

>> the time is 6:55. look at this, a disturbs incident in san francisco. the man is trying to light a homeless man on fire. this is at 16th and mission at the bart station. the viewer sent ktvu this video. it happened saturday night. bart police say they could have intervened but no one ever reported it. bart police say the largest number of crimes reported last month was at the oakland coliseum bart station. the west oakland, dublin and hayward station had the same amount of crime reported and tied for number two. fruit vail ranked third.
