information. breaking news from london. it involves a united jet that left heathrow this morning heading to sfo. >> reporter: you may have seen it. thousands of lightning strikes light up the bay area overnight. we'll tell you where most of the activity was reported and why this wild weather has firefighters on high alert. >> reporter: we're live in fremont where a big rig and a car crashed. we'll tell you what police are saying and which city streets are closed. welcome to "mornings on 2." we're live at the scene of a serious accident where a big rig flipped over hitting cars. we'll have more on that in just a moment. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve is here to tell you a lot of things. >> red flag warning continues from now until 5:00 on wednesday. probably go into thursday.

possible thunderstorms, more lightning. things have rotated north and off the coast, still lightning strikes being reported out to the farrahlons. we're still in line for the wraparound of clouds and maybe shurs -- showers. 56 to 58. 60s, 70s and 80s by noon. by then, partly cloudy. maybe more showers tonight. 60s to some lower 90s today. not the 100s we saw yesterday. much, much cooler. a good 10, 15 degrees especially in the higher elevations and a rip roarin' braze. today it will be hot for some. not as hot. occasionally popup showers are coming from the sierra and the sacramento valley. a lot of is lifting out. there's still plenty of activity that has to come through. showers, sun. i think it would be more in the afternoon, evening. tomorrow looks active for i think here as the low begins to

move. 60s, 70s, 80s. not the 100s from yesterday. here's sal. we have lights out on the lower deck of the bay bridge that have been causing some people to -- in fact, if you look at this video, the lights go out on the far left. it's caused some people to question what's going on. as the traffic gets into san francisco, it is not affected by this because, fortunately, it's light enough. some of the lights were also off on the lower deck of the bay bridge. we're looking at westbound bay bridge approach. this is normal for this time of the morning. it's backed up for about a 15- minute day. fortunately, none of the light problems have been affecting the bridge. we're also looking at a problem in fremont. this problem on auto mall parkway, major crash near technology drive. let's go live to ktvu's tara moriarty, who is on the scene of have very serious crash. tara? >> reporter: this looks pretty violent. if you take a look behind me, you can see the big rig is on its side. it does have diesel.

crews are a little bit concerned about that. right now they are trying to figure out exactly how this crash unfolded. joining me live is lieutenant fred bobit. he's here to explain this. this is auto mall parkway. can you tell us who was going which direction? >> we understand the big rig or tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on auto mall between technology coming up towards fremont boulevard. we believe currently right now that the big rig actually, as it was traveling eastbound jumped the center median and struck what you see is the white compact vehicle that we believe was traveling westbound. >> reporter: there was a woman in the car. witnesses say she appeared to be in her 30s or something. her head was actually out of the window and that's what saved her. that window was down or popped out? >> we will say that she was obviously transported to a local trauma center. we're hoping that she makes it. right right now we're not sure

if that's how she survived. but we know she is at a trauma center right now. >> reporter: as far as the truck driver goes, it appears he only suffered a couple of scratches. >> that's correct. >> reporter: so where does the investigation go from here? how long will this section of roadway be shut down? >> well, as you can see, this is a pretty horrible collision. we believe it will be closed for 0 some time. we're think be maybe an hour, two hours right now. as soon as we're able to open the roadway, we'll let you know. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. so once again, a grewsome accident here and the -- gruesome accident here in and the woman in the white car is at a trauma center. we're waiting to get an update on her condition. the truck driver is okay. they are interviewing him and trying to figure out why he jumped the median. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:05. breaking news just into our

newsroom, a flight headed from london's heathrow airport to sfo this morning had to turn around after a mechanical issue with that plane. sfo confirms united flight 900 returned to london but they say there was no serious risks to passengers. according to the website, the flight has been canceled for the day, so passengers will likely need to be booked on other flights to get to san francisco. developing news from san jose. this morning police are looking for suspects in a tripping shoot -- triple shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. it happened on alum rock avenue in east san jose. janine de la vega says police are now asking for the public's help. she joins us now from the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're going into the tenth hour that police have been here on the scene. this have this area roped off.

when officers arrived, they say about 15 people were inside the restaurant. but they believe many more witnesses were inside who left and they would like to talk to them. police say they were called to the restaurant and bar in east san jose shortly after 10:00 last night of a they received a report that multiple gunshots were fired. officers say the bullets came flying into the restaurant, startling customers. three men were hit. one of them died from his injuries at the hospital. the other two received superficial wounds and will survive. >> at this opportunity, not exactly sure the motive of the shooting or any suspect information. just that it appears that the rounds were fired from the outside into the establishment and at this opportunity, that's all we have. >> reporter: this morning, crime scene technicians collected evidence and took pictures of the bullet holes. police say around nine shots were fired. from witnesses statements it appears the victims were

innocent bystanders. sources tell me friends of the man who died was an engineer. police say the homicide victim is asian. he appears to be in his 40s. again, there are -- there's no motive or no suspects that have been apprehended yet in this case. reporting live from east san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:07. continuing coverage of the unusual bay area weather. thousands of lightning strikes, about 1,000 reported overnight. we may see even more later today and tomorrow. now, the threat of lightning has triggered a red flag warning. it's gonna stay in effect until tomorrow. ktvu's alex savidge is in pacifica now to tell us how calfire is responding to the potential of fires. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. with all of the lightning strikes, firefighters were on high alert last night, but people here on the peninsula and across the bay area really

enjoyed what was a spectacular light show last night. let me show you some of the video here. this is video taken by a ktvu photographer down here in san mateo county. lightning also reported further down the coast in pescadero and santa cruz county. also some reports of light rain as well. according to the national weather service, mother nature was busy last night. more than 11,000 lightning strikes were seen across the bay area and that is just since 8:00 last night. although a majority of those strikes were out over the water. now, while the lightning was fun to watch, all of that lightning had firefighters concerned. a red flag warning does remain in effect across northern california with lightning and strong winds and high fire danger. at the calfire air attack base at the sonoma county airport, crews are ready to respond to any lightning sparked fire. last night the thunderstorms actually forced one plane to turn around and return to the airport. calfire, of course, has staffed reserve engines and brought in

extra firefighters just in case the large fire does break out. >> we have additional engines staffed, we have additional staff on duty and station personnel on duty. if we do get lightning, we're able to deal with those incidents appropriately. >> reporter: now that the thunderstorms have moved through, calfire crews plan to be back up in the air later today to respond to any fires that could break out. the red flag warning for northern california remains in place through tomorrow. although those thunderstorms have moved out over the water, they did so early this morning, the lightning has let up this morning, but nearsary the possibility of more lightning activity later on tonight. live this in pacifica, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. because of the red flag warning, calfire reopened that lookout station near mount hamilton. it's 4400 feet over santa clara valley. volunteers will be -- a volunteer, right there, he will

stay at the post from dawn to dusk until the red flag warning is lifted. 7:10. right now, crews are battling at least 11 wildfires burning all across the state. calfire considers nine of them major fires. the latest fire started yesterday in the sequoia national forest in kern county. firefighters say it was started by a lightning strike. we want to see your photos any time when severe weather hits. e-mail them to photos@ktvu.com or post them on our facebook page. 7:11. a grant to remove flammable trees in marin county may be headed back to the state of california. fire safe marin works to reduce wildfire hazard, received a grant to remove eucalyptuses and replace them with oakes. they don't have enough money to play for the project. the grant does not run out

situation in egypt. the country's military backed rulers continue a crackdown against the muslim brotherhood arresting the group's spiritual leader. now, this is the latest blow to the supporters of former president,-month-old morsi. well, the white house -- president,-month-old morsi. well, the white house says they are reviewing this situation and kyla campbell has new information from the white house. what are they telling you? >> reporter: my contacts say no policy decisions a have been made -- have been made for the remaining assistance for the rest of the year. the u.s. is supposed to make a payment and that is under review. president obama has a range of options including suspending

aid. more than 900 civilians and dozens of security force members have been killed over the past week. the white house says there are consequences. the u.s. already delayed the delivery of f-16 fighter sets to egypt and the president canceled next month's joint military exercises with egypt. some analysts say pulling aid could hurt u.s. tax payers. i will have that for you at 8:15. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:16. former pakistan president and army chief perves musharraf has been indicted on murder charges. the charges are in connection with the assassination of former pakistan prime minister benazir bhutto six years ago. it's the first time a former army chief has been charged with a crime. he took power in 1999 during a coup. he stepped down almost a decade later in disgrace. he's entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

7:16. cindy chavez will be officially sworn in tonight as the new santa clara county supervisor. chavez was elected in a special lex on july 30th -- election on july 30th to replace the former supervisor who resigned after need pleading guilty to misusing public funds. bob filner is believed to be working out a settlement with one of his accusers. he was spotted in public for the first time in three weeks. he entered the san diego administration building. also there was gloria allred, representing one of the women suing filner and the city for sexual harassment. it's not clear if a possible resignation by filner is part of the settlement talks. a sonoma county supervisor accused of driving to break into a woman's home in his underwear is expected to return to work. he was arrested last month on

suspicion of prowling and burglary. he checked into an alcohol treatment program after his arrest. his return to work comes three weeks after publicly condemned by his board colleagues. 7:17. it's now up to governor brown to decide if california voters who vote by mail can find out if their bal lott was counted. both houses approve the idea. if the governor signs it into law, every county would be required to check mail-in voters. about half of the ballots last november were mailed in. an army judge is deliberating the sentence for bradie manning for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to wikileaks. now, manning was convicted of violating the espionage act. he could be sentenced to as long as 90 years in prison. defense lawyers argued for more than 25 years. they are saying that manning was "capable of being

redeemed." the judge said she could announce a sentence as early as tomorrow morning. 7:18. want to check in with sal. see what's happening on the roads, including the always popular bay bridge toll plaza. >> that's right, tori and dave. it's going to be heavy there at the toll plaza. we're also looking at other things. we'll start here because it's one of the busiest commutes in the bay area. 15 to 20-minute delay. it's a little bit crowded unless you are in the carpool lanes. no major problems here. there appears to be one by going really slow and one guy flashing high beams at him. that happens. the traffic here is moving well. tonight there is an as' game 7:05 against the mariners. tomorrow is the day game at 12:35. the giants are also at home. so you can expect traffic in the city tonight. let's move along to the fremont area. we've been talking about that crash on auto mall parkway near technology drive. it will be out there for the next few hours.

we have a reporter on scene there. that's right there. also want to mention that northbound 680 at highway 4, we have a new injury reported. the fire -- the fire department is on the way there. let's go to steve. fog, low clouds and a rather strong delta breezes that kicked in yesterday. some locations warmed up. some of you more than others. that's for sure. others were right there. red flag warning goes until 5:00 p.m. on wednesday. i probably think this will go into early thursday at arrest for so solano and napa and lake. the low is still off the coast and has not moved. it's sending in bands of showers. and the lightning show last night all part of the low. as long as this sits down here, it will send in some dry air and some clouds. we're kind of in the between. that doesn't mean that there's no cloud streaming off.

temperatures, not the 70s or mid-70s we had yesterday. some of the ier elevations -- higher elevations are 15, 20 degrees cooler. it will be cooler today. 60s 70s, 80s. 90s. my forecast goes from ashford oregon to brawley. 60s on the temperatures for some instead of the 70s. there's lot of cloud cover off the coast. right now we'll focus on the sea breeze. up to 30 plus in fairfield. livermore, west wind at 7. san jose still gets the south- southeast breeze. temperatures today, starting off cooler. they will end up cooler. it's the cloud cover that continues to stream in. a couple of isolated showers trying to form mere. one moving towards napa county. you can see that developing heading to st. helena, calistoga. a lot of that cloud cover continues to lift north. now, san jose under mostly clear, mostly cloudy skies. there's some patchy fog a lot more fog. watch what happens last night. i will take you back 18 hours. watch the line around pacifica, half moon bay, el granada.

good morning. you are looking live at a serious crash scene in fremont. police still on the scene there doing part of their investigation. we'll have a live report coming up in just minutes. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. >> let's check weather and traffic and steve has a lot to tell you about. >> we have a red flag warning until 5:00 on wednesday. i would not be surprised if that extends early thursday for some especially up in the north bay. the low rotating around. it has not moved yet. it needs a kicker. looks like it might get one later. in between now, there's still cloud cover coming around. for the morning more low clouds and fog. cooler lows and a stronger sea breeze, a westerly breeze. but more clouds, fob slowrs and maybe another round of

lightning today. getting afternoon heating but instead of 70s for lows, we have more 60s and 70s. a couple of isolated showers popping up. one heading toward northern napa county it looks like into southernlake county. middletown maybe right there. so there's still some active weather coming across from the sacramento valley. some of that continues to move towards the north. things could fire up any time. mix of sun and clouds, possible showers, lightning possible again. i think it would be more later than sooner. but the stronger breeze will equal cooler temperatures. 60s 7080s. more into the 90s. here's sal. good morning. we're looking at just a lot of slow traffic all over the place in the bay area. we'll begin with a look at interstate 880 which actually doesn't look all that bad here at the coliseum as you are driving farther north, though, you will see slow traffic approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. at the toll plaza, it's about a 25 to 30-minute delay. nothing unusual except if you are in the carpool lanes, then it looks good.

we've been looking at contra costa county. highway 4 through antioch and 680 from concord to walnut creek is slow. have a report of a ladder on appian. watch for that. on 880 hayward, southbound traffic is slow from 238 heading down to union city. so is northbound. we've had a couple of minor crashes on the freeway. we also have a crash in fremont. let's go to tara moriarty on a major road in fremont where there was a very serious crash. tara? >> reporter: well, the impact of this crash was so great, it sheared the top portion of the -- of the car off. it's light. it's sitting up on the sidewalk actually. investigators believe the driver of that big rig jumped the median and hit the white car. we just got some pictures in from a neighbor who who heard the crash at 5:00 this morning. police say the big rig driver was heading eastbound on auto

mall parkway when for some reason he veered and hit the median. he hit the woman's car. the woman was transported to a trauma center in life- threatening condition. >> we sas sitting at -- she was sitting at angle. they said the reason she was alive was because of the window being down or it popped out. her head was outside a little bit. that's what saved her. us that that whole part of the crash was completely crashed. >> reporter: the truck driver appeared to ruck away with a few scratches. police are interviewing him right now. fremont police say they will keep auto mall parkway blocked off from technology drive for about four hours. that's because they need to complete their investigation and that truck has diesel fuel. the tank is resting on a tree there. they will have to call in hazmat crews to come and clean

it up. once again, four hours that this roadway will be shut down. live from fremont, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:33. also new this morning, all lanes of northbound interstate 880 in san jose are back open after a rollover crash seriously injured a woman. it happened at 4:00 this morning near stevens creek boulevard. one of the cars flipped and landed on its roof trapping the driver inside. the woman was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the cause of the crash is still being investigated. and we have new information on a home invasion robbery that injured a woman at her pug home last night -- at her pittsburg home last night. >> reporter: we understand the female victim is expected to be okay. she was at home at the time along with her two young kids. at this time, the kids' ages are 3 and 6. they were asleep at the time.

when robert entered the home apparently through a second- story window last night. we are hearing from police about what happened. they say it happened around 10:00 p.m. last night. again, the two suspects entered the home through a second story window. it remains unclear how they got to the second story. we talked to neighbors who say perhaps the trash cans were stacked. they demanded money from the from the woman and she later complied. she tried to reach the panic button on her alarm system and that's when there was a struggle. we reported there was -- the woman was pistol-whipped. there were no injuries at the scene. the woman was treated and released at a local hospital. neighbors say they are shocked in such a quiet neighborhood. to this happen in -- we need a gate, i mean, it's -- it's scary because it's real close

to home. >> reporter: police also say a silver suv similar to a chevrolet was last seen leaving the area. unfortunately, there's no clear- cut suspect description as police say the suspects covered their faces with their hooded sweatshirts. police say there's no motive at this time which is why they are asking anyone with information to call them. we're live here in pittsburg, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. with the opening of the new span of the bay bridge, it's a stip closer. over the weekend, crews finished installing steel shims. the permanent repair for the broken bolts that's not expected until december. in the meantime, later today, the bridge oversight committee will give us an update on all of the construction that will take place before the bridge is closed next week. now, ktvu news has also learned b.a.r.t. will have 14 of the stations operating around the clock while the bay bridge is closed down. the b.a.r.t.

stations will stay open 24 hours a day, starting wednesday, august 28th. overnight service will be offered once an hour to b.a.r.t. riders all over the bay area. b.a.r.t. will run some longer trains during the day with as many as ten cars. b.a.r.t. will provide special service for weekend events including oakland as' games. some bay area commuters are looking ahead to the bay bridge closing down during the long holiday weekend. >> i'm going up to oregon to visit family for the long holiday weekend. i'm making it an extra long weekend to avoid the closure. >> hopefully i don't have to work. if i do, then i will have to be on the road with everybody else. >> all b.a.r.t. trains will stop early tuesday morning september 3rd for required inspections and maintenance that is also the same morning the new bay bridge is set to open. now, ktvu.com has a lot of coverage for you dedicated to the new bridge and next week's

bridge closure. just check it out. look for the link. it's on the front page under hot topics. deliverrations in the case of a -- deliberations in the case of joseph naso are set to resume at 9:30 this morning. the jury in marin county will begin its first full day of deciding the fate of the 79- year-old murder suspect. naso is acting as his own attorney. he finished his closing arc arguments late -- closing arguments late yesterday. he's charged with first-degree murder in crimes date back to the 1970s. naso insists he's innocent of the crimes. later today, a funeral will be held for a father who was shot and killed two weeks ago along with his 1-year-old son in east oakland. 20-year-old andrew thomas and his son drew were shot to death as they slept at a relative's home on gormley avenue. baby drew was laid to rest on friday. so far no arrests have been made. a $30,000 reward is being offered in the case.

and we have new information about the arrest of a surf instructor in santa cruz. santa cruz police are now saying the investigation could be handed over to the federal government. 38-year-old dylan griner is accused of making inappropriate advances and taking videos and photos of two teenaged girls. he was arrested on friday. santa cruz police say they've received calls from possible victims' families living as far away as new york. griner is expected in court tomorrow. 7:39. the california highway patrol released a report on that deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. five women on their way to a wedding party were killed when the lincoln town car they were riding in burst into flames. investigators ruled the fire was an unforeseeable accident. and the limo driver will not face any criminal charges. he says he's still haunted by the memories of that night. >> it's painful. every day is painful.

every minute is painful. every minute it -- it reoccurs in my head about every day. the investigators also concluded the limo driver was not on a cell phone at the time of the fire as has been reported. we're fidding out more this morning about a deadly hit-and- run crash in san jose. 61-year-old carlton ford was hit and killed saturday night by a pickup truck on alum rock avenue about 8:a that night. his -- 8:45 that night. his neighbors say he walked that same way every night. the chp are looking into whether this involves another accident of earlier. >> if i could bring him back, i sure could. >> it's horrible. how could anyone do that? >> investigators say the truck was too dark to see the driver of the truck. but are looking for a '90s ford pickup truck. it has front-end damage.

it's almost 8:00. we want to have a quick check on weather and traffic. >> a little fog, westerly breeze. brentwood, antiorkts it was hotter -- antioch, it was hotter. i know, it will be cooler today. tom blossom hill said it's sunny. the low -- this is right over us. it could be a heck of a show more so than last night. there are projections it will drift over the bay area. i think tomorrow could be better. it depends on location and timing as well. now red flag until 5:00 p.m. on wednesday, everyone is pushed offshore for now. there's hit-and-miss showers rotating around. we start off with low clouds, cooler lows and more of a westerly wind. so temperatures will come down, i think a good 10, 15 degrees. by this afternoon, we could get more clouds, possible showers and another round of lightning. this -- the next 48 hours i think we're in line. 50, and 60s instead of the 70s. i'm gonna get out of the way so you can see.

this is really impressive for august. you can see how this low is happened in, rotating a lot of the moisture. we're getting a drier air spot. however, that still doesn't stop some especially by the east bay and north bay. there's a little cell trying to pop up to st. helena and calistoga. we're not done. kind of early for this to be rotating around. it's there. a lot of low clouds, fog, some sun. 60s by the coast. here's sal. we have a lot of slow traffic out there even though we're hitting the 8:00 hour right now. i want to show you that the toll plaza is getting a little bit better now. it's backed up to about the macarthur maze. the -- the metering lights are on. we also have slow traffic in san francisco along northbound 101 approaching the lower deck of the bay bridge.

remember, the lights were out down there. i'm not sure if that could be causing some of the slow traffic or if jits just slow getting into san francisco and onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. i want to show you the south bay, we do have slow traffic on 101 northbound it's very slow. 280 is getting into the act. people are pulling away from downtown into the valley and 85. this is partially due to earlier accidents there in the south bay. we also have a problem in fremont. we have a major crash that's happened hours ago. ktvu's tara moriarty is in fremont to tell us what happened and what lanes are closed. tara? >> reporter: well, police are trying to figure out what caused this big rig driver to jump the median. was headed this direction and slammed into the white car. the impact of this crash, it sheared the top of that tblit car off -- car right off. police say the big rig driver was headed eastbound on auto

keep in touch with fremont police this morning try to see if there's any update on the woman driver. live from fremont, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:03. developing news from san jose, this morning, police are out there searching for suspects in a triple shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. one person was killed. two others were wounded last night on alum rock avenue in east san jose. ktvu's janine de la vega says the police are asking for the public's help. you are back now with the latest from that scene. janine? >> reporter: dave, i spoke to homicide detectives in the last 30 minutes. they still have not identified any suspects. nobody actually witnessed who actually has seen the shooter. they've been here for the last ten hours gathering what they can for evidence. police say shortly after 10:00 p.m. last night, they received a report of multiple gunshots fired near the restaurant on alum rock and capital avenue

officers say 15 people were inside the restaurant. three men were shot. all were rushed to the hospital where one died this morning from his injuries. the other two received superficial wounds and will survive. police say after speaking to witnesses, it appears that whoever pulled the trigger did so from outside of the restaurant. >> we are tea still in the preliminary part of the investigation. it's lard to say if someone will come forward and give us information. >> reporter: police say nine shots were fired. they've been taking photographs of the damage. at this point, there's no motive in the shooting. it's unknown if the restaurant was targeted. the victim's identity has not been released. but sources tell me that his friends on scene say that he was an engineer and just out enjoying drinks with friends. police say he was asian and appears to have been in his 40s. back out here live, you can see this occurred in a strip mall.

we have a lot of slow traffic. we'll start with a look at some of the south bay freeways. look at 101 and 280, the red sensors tell it all. very slow traffic there on 101, 280, 85. a lot of those indicators, indicating minor crashes and most of them have been cleared but driving into the silicon valley right now will be very tough on almost every major freeway. if we move the maps to the peninsula, fewer incidents but a lot of slow traffic on 101 northbound on san mateo and southbound through palo alto and across the bay, 880 is improving a little bit as you drive through. let's go to some live pictures. the traffic continues to move along very well on 237 after zanker road. it gets better approaching 101 and sunnyvale. at the bay bridge toll plaza, still crowded. we're seeing improvement here as you drive up to pay the money. 8:19. let's go to steve. well, a lot more fog and sunshine than high and mid- level clouds.

reported. a woman, with children, ages 3, and 6 they were asleep. when two robbers entered the home through a second-story window. it's unclear how the robbers were able to climb up the second story. police say it all happened before 10:00 p.m. last night. when the suspects entered the second story window, they confronted the woman asking for monetary items. she complied but at one point she attempted to reach for the panic button on her home's alarm system. when that happened, that's when a struggle occurred. police say the victim was hit on her face and upper body. she was able to dial 911 when the suspects fled through the front door. we spoke to neighbors who say they were shocked that this happened in a quiet neighborhood. >> it brings about a little fear to me because, you know, it's a very quiet neighborhood. we all, you know, are working

feinstein's proposed ban. if approved, that law would ban military style weapons. united states had a ban on assault weapons, but it was allowed to expire in 2004. after a year-long undercover operation, police in new york arrested 19 people and they broke up a major gun operation. police say the defendants made several trips to new york city from north and south carolina with as many as 14 illegal weapons at a time. police say they used economy bus lines to transport those weapons. they include assault weapons, a fully automatic machine gun, and handguns. tonight the napa city council will talk about a recommend eighth from the police chief -- recommendation from the police chief to ban medical marijuana dispensaries. a moratorium against them expires in october. the police chief says with the current crackdown by the federal government, the city would open itself up to prosecution if it does not

issue a ban. san francisco's city attorneys -- city's attorney is demanding re-enforcement from nevada for what he calls patient dumping. in a letter, mr. herrera says nevada has been busing psychiatric patients to california cities. he says he's got the bus records to back up his claims. he wants all california cities reimbursed for any treatment that's providing. he says san francisco alone has spent $500,000. 8:34. the opening of the new span of the bay bridge is one step closer to morning. ktvu has learned the temporary fix for those broken bolts is now complete. over the weekend, crews finished installing steel shims. the permanent repair for those broken bolts is not expected until december. in the meantime, later today, the bridge oversight committee will give us an update on the construction that will take place before the bridge is closed for five days. that starts the evening of

wednesday, august 28th. and ktvu news has learned that b.a.r.t. plans to have 14 of its stations operating around the clock during the five-day bay bridge closure. the b.a.r.t. stations will remain open 24 hours a day starting the night of august 28th. they will offer overnight service to the 14 stations once an hour between midnight and 4:00 a.m. and b.a.r.t. will run longer trains during the day when the bridge is closed for as many as ten scars. b.a.r.t. will provide special service for weekend events including the oakland as' game. ktvu.com has extensive coverage and next where's closure. look for the link on the front page under to the -- hot topics. the project to restore part of the van dam ferry is back on track. they want to move the ferry paddle wheel away from the current site which is being developed into apark. when the worken is -- into a

stocks creeping higher this morning after a four-day slump. a number of retailers reporting higher earnings in the second quarter, including best buy, urban outfitters and home depot which saw an 18% jump in its second quarter net income. taking a live look at the big board. the dow is currently up 55. the nasdaq up 29 and s&p up 10. well, this is an interesting concept. doing away with a tip. some of the top restaurants in the country are getting rid of the policy including a few here in the bay area.

ktvu's pam cook joins us in the studio with what they are doing in place of tipping and how people feel about it. >> mixed reactions. two very farm names in the bay area have a no-tipping policy. and they are following the lead of some top spots in new york. some restaurants are opting to pay staff more instead. one owner in san diego says waiters who have a reliable income rather than wondering about tips can better focus on their jobs. but critics workry service will be affected -- workry service will be affected -- worry service will be affected. some waiters like the opportunity to make more money by offering good service. something else that could affect customers, is that one high-end japanese restaurant is getting rid of tipping but they are raising menu prices

national interagency fire center has raised the level to 5. the highest it gets because of the dry conditions and the lightning potential for the next couple of days. things are quieter right now. but there's plenty going on with the low offshore. tapping into the moisture but sending it back to the pacific. the low will send in more clouds later. things have calmed down. there's a lot of low clouds and fog. but still plenty of that could wrap back around. red flag warning is confusing. north bay goes until tomorrow. so suffice it to say, there's still a red flag warning until -- we'll update it at noon. mob thundershowers. also north and east of us, that could be that area that really is in the gun so to speak here as this low begins to move. today it's still tapping in a lot of that moisture coming in off the sierra of the sacramento valley. a lot of it seems to be moving out of the area. a lot of sunshine, 60snd 80s.

a much, much stronger delta breeze and much cooler temperatures. it won't be as hot inland. temperatures will cool down. as the low moves in it will usher in cool air aloft. look at that. there's a lot out there. as that low treks over us tomorrow, have to keep an eye on things. destabilize the atmosphere a little bit. dew points are very high. things could get interesting. if this was in the midwest, i would say all bets are off. it will happen. still a little bit of rain rotating around. even some lightning strikes continuing off the coast, marin coast and santa cruz and monterey. a lot of fog, more so today, showers and then lightning possible later. there is a stronger sea breeze, though. that's in place. the parameter is probably not as positive today as yesterday. but humidity is very high. 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s on the temperatures. after today and tomorrow, then things should calm down. maybe one more day on thursday morning. have to keep an eye on that one.

after that friday into the weekend it looks quiet and cooler. let's bring you up to date on some. other top stories we're following for you -- in fremont, a big rig crash, seriously injured a woman after the big rig jumped the median and crashed intoler car. this -- into her car. this all happened an auto mall parkway. for the next couple of hours, the westbound lanes between fremont and grimmer boulevard, they will be closed while the police investigate what happened. more 11,000 lightning strikes overnight around the bay area. most were in san mateo, some in pes da der row and -- pescadero and santa cruz county. the light show could continue. more lightning in the forecast tonight and tomorrow. we're following developing news from san jose. this morning police searching for suspects in a triple shooting at a vietnamese restaurant. janine de la vega has been on this since 4:30 this morning. you are back now. so what do you know now janine. >> reporter: well, derblth

detective -- welt, detectives will to wrap up here at the scene. they've been here for many hours. you can see them at the restaurant. no suspects has been identified yet. we're told by police it appears that nine bullets were fired into the restaurant but nobody saw the shooter. police say shortly after 10:00 last night, bullets came flying inside the restaurant on alum rock avenue near capital. officers say it appears who of fired the shots was outside. three men were hit by bullets and rushled to the hospital -- rushed to the hospital. one of them dayed at 2:00 a.m., the other had super fish am wounds and will survive. we spoke to one witness who heard the gunfire but didn't want to dwiv her name -- give her name. >> two or three shots. at first we didn't pay attention to it. and then the five shots later, we knew it was five shots. >> no word what led up to the gunfire. the victims were told by police, they were all asian --

happening today, better late than never. the white house will honor the miami dolphins for having the only perfect season in nfl history. it happened more than 40 years ago. the 1972 team will be honored by the president. in return, the dolphins will give the president a leather- bound book commemorating the perfect season capped by the dolphins' win over the redskins in super bowl vii. >> we accomplished a lot 41 years ago. but to be greeted by the president of the united states is very, very special. >> the owner is paying all expenses for the trip. the reason the team was unable to make it to the white house following their super bowl win in '72, that's when the water gate scandal broke.
