now at noon -- what a great white shark was doing at at shore and how it's imth -- at the shore and how its impacting the beach. and why fire officials say they got lucky last night with the lightning. a deadly shooting under investigation in san jose. the reason police think the shooting was random. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell.

stinson beach is shut down today after a great white shark sighting. the shark was spotted devouring a seal off the coast. david stevenson is there and is live on the phone. good afternoon, david. >> reporter: good afternoon. just to be clear, the beach is open for folks who want to hang out on the sand but they are not allowed to go in the water. i'm standing underneath a lifeguard tower from which the great white was -- from where the great white was spotted. there's about four dozen people on the beach. nobody is going in the water, thanks to signs that have been posted along the beach and in parking lots alerting folks there's a ban on swimming. this shark i'm told was spotted fairly close to shore not far from a finned whale that beached itself sunday night or early monday morning that we covered yesterday. that along with a report from a fishing vessel about this great white prompted the coast guard

to do some aerial surveillance of the scene. they didn't spot the shark but beachgoers were told to get out of the water around 3:00 yesterday. the national park service describes it as a 10 to 15-foot shark. they say it may have been attracted close to the -- attracted close to the area. >> at this point, the water is overcast. it's cool. it will burn off. theoretically that would attract a lot more people to go in the water. you are welcome to the beach. you are not -- you are not

allowed to go in the water. for now reporting live at stinson beach, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. back to you. >> thank you. we turn now to the investigation into a deadly shooting at a san jose restaurant. police are trying to track down the person responsible for shooting up a vietnamese restaurant hitting three men one man died. janine de la vega joins us now from the scene. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. police have left the scene but you can still see some of the evidence best behind. bullet holes are in the restaurant and the windows and i looked inside. you can still see there's a lot of blood in there. owners have a lot of cleaning up to do before they can open again. people who live near the restaurant were not pleased to see bullet holes riddling the outside when they visited the strip mall on alum rock. >> it's feeling awkward and unsafe and unsecure. >> reporter: police say at 10:00 last night, numerous

gunshots were fired into the restaurant and bar, startling customers. three men were hit. >> it was like two, three shots. at first we didn't pay attention to it. and then about 20 minutes later, those -- we knew it was five shots. >> the victims were taken to the hospital. two had non-life-threatening injuries but the other man died. police describe him as asian in his mid-30s. sources say he was an engineer just enjoying a drink with friends. >> they were just patrons inside the restaurant. somebody shot inside of the business from outside. >> reporter: was it random? >> it appears to be random at this time. >> reporter: crime scene investigators spent hours combing through the scene collecting evidence. they interviewed other patrons but no one saw the shooter. >> it's always drist when you don't have -- difficult when you don't have witnesses at the beat ginn -- at the beginning. >> reporter: some say they are not surprised the shooting happened. >> it's a shame it took

somebody's life. i could just hope that san jose, they have more patrol. >> reporter: police do not have any suspect information at this time. they tell me that it does not appear to be gang-related. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, janine. pittsburg police are looking for two men in connection with a home invasion robbery where a mother of two was beaten. police say the woman and her two young children were inside the home on bending willow way when the two men forced open a second-story window. they confronted the woman and demanded money. the children stayed in their rooms. the woman complied with the -- with the robbers but tried to press a panic button on her home alarm and that's when the robbers hit her. neighbors are shocked this happened in their quiet, family- friendly neighborhood. >> it brings about a little

fear to me. it's a very quiet neighborhood. we are all working families, go and come, and you -- you have to be safe. i always tell my daughters to make sure everything is locked up. you never know who will be coming through checking windows and doors. >> reporter: police say there's no descriptions of the two suspect, they were wearing hooded sweatshirts. they may have left the neighborhood in a silver suv. in less than a three-hour span last night, the national weather service reported more nan 11,000 lightning strikes around the bay area. take a look at several of the incident -- incidents captured by ktvu crews. there's still the possibility of more lightning today. alex savidge is monitoring how fire crews are preparing for the chance of more fires sparked by lightning. but we begin our team coverage with steve paulson who tells us about the red flag warning in effect right now. >> that's correct. things are quiet and cooler. we seem to be getting a lot of dry air coming in here.

it's sunny to mostly sunny unless you are on parts of the coast. so far we're keeping an eye on clouds. the low is still spinning off there. it's not moving but it will by tonight and tomorrow. tomorrow it will be on tom of us -- on top of us. suffice it to say, it's cooler. bewe had temperatures -- we had temperatures near 90. also some of that fog 207b the coast is keeping temperatures very cool there. sea breeze is really ramped up. more of a westerly wind. even gusts to about 30. yesterday it was almost calm conditions. we had very hot weather. today you can see the low still spinning. it's far away. there's not a lot coming off the sierra, the rain line continues to move north but we're not done yet. the main issue, there's a lot of fog. tonight, tomorrow could be more in line for another round of lightning but things look a lot quieter today. as we mentioned, people across the bay area were treated to an amazing show.

alex savidge explains why most of the lightning came down in the perfect place. >> reporter: the skies lit up with a rare lightning storm over the bay area. and the 24-hour total today is staggering. more than 15,000 lightning strikes since noon yesterday. although not all of them hit the ground. for some this burst of electricity brought back fond memories. >> brought me back to my youth in new inland where it was almost a -- new england where it was almost a daily occurrence. >> reporter: most of the lightning hit along the coast between half moon bay and pacifica. with a flurry of activity between 6:00 and 8:00 last night, an impressive show, although it wasn't quite as fun for some scared pets. >> enjoyed what i saw from the drapery. my cat didn't like it but that was okay. >> reporter: all of this dry lightning left firefighters on edge worried about wildfires. but thankfully, there was a silver lining to this storm.

the national weather service tells me about 90% of the lightning came down over the ocean. >> we really dodged a bullet last night with regards to where the lightning strikes that hit the ground occurred. >> reporter: this morning, the national weather service was still reporting lightning strikes. about 150 miles offshore. the storm system that lit up the bay area last night has passed through. there's still the possibility of another light show tonight. in pacifica, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> red flag warning has prompted calfire to reopen a lock jute station near mount hamilton. it sits 4400 feet above santa clara county. calfire volunteer john whiteside will be looking out for smoke and he will remain at the post from dawn until dusk until the red flag warning is lifted. right now crews are battling at least 11 wildfires burning all across the state. calfire considers nine -- throughout the state.

the largest is the so-called swedes fire which has burned more than 2800 acres in butte county. so far several structures have been destroyed. although the fire is 75% contained, crew worries the progress they've made could be in jeopardy. >> we do have thunderstorms developing and so that also poses a threat to us and to the -- to the progress. we're just hoping that the thunderstorms are not bringing dry -- dry lightning our way. earlier today, some of the evacuation orders were lifted but crews remind residents that could all change quickly. we will continue to monitor the red flag warning and fire danger for the latest on fires and the heightened alert in the bay area. just go to ktvu.com or follow us on twitter or facebook. new at noon, we're getting an update on the construction of the bay bridge project right now. ktvu's tom vacar is on a tour with bridge crew members to find out the work that still

needs to be done before the bridge closes in just over a week. we will have his full report tonight. and at the time, we'll also update you on a completed installation of the shims which are the temporary fix to the broken bolts until the permanent fix is completed in december. more details on the 14 b.a.r.t. stations that plan to run overnight service during the bay bridge closure. beginning august 28th which is when the bay bridge will shut down, select stations will remain open 24 hours a day and offer hourly service. b.a.r.t. also plans to run longer trains during the day to accommodate commuters. however, all b.a.r.t. trains will stop running late monday night for required inspections and maintenance. the new span of the bay bridge will open the next morning, tuesday, september 3rd at 5:00 a.m. and ktvu.com has extensive coverage dedicated to the new

we're following developing news out of georgia. there was gunfire at a school. a suspect is in custody. no staff or children were hurt. the school is mcnair discovery learning academy and witnesses heard several gunshots at 10:00 our time. all students were bussed to a safe location. a s.w.a.t. team searched the campus to look for possible suspects. no word on the gunman's possible motive. a marin county jury has started its first full day of deliberations in the serial murder trial of joseph naso. he's accused of killing four northern california women in the 1970s and 1990s. the 79-year-old is acting as

his own attorney and delivered his closing arguments late yesterday. he has insisted that he's innocent but prosecutors presented dna and other evidence which they say show he murdered the women. it is day two of a federal trial for a former danville police officer accused of being part of a so-called dirty dui scheme. prosecutors are set to call their first witness to the stand today. 50-year-old steven tanabe is facing seven federal charges relating to his alleged role in the drunken driving arrests of three. an investigator gave him cocaine and a gun. oakland police and the u.s. marshal service have just announced the arrests of more than two dozen violent

fugitives what they called -- what they called a high risk operation was carried out over the past few weeks. >> the operation resulted in the arrest of 25 individually, five for homicide and four for attempted homicide as well as two for armed robbery. in addition, five firearms were taken off the streets. >> some arrested have been will -- have already been charged. social networking site linked-in is making changes for high school students. starting september 12th they will lower the allowed using age to 13 years old. the site is rolling out university pages to educate students about their options for college and connect with alumni. the move wills have help linked- in grow its user base. stanford university is taking

new steps to increase online stewart after two hacker attacks. the most recent attack was last month when hackers broke into stanford's main computer network. administrators learned that the latest attack was apparently launched from an oversees location -- overseas location and was similar to other attacks. we have an entire section dedicated to back to school we have resources for parents and student, back-to-school blobs for mom and photos of our own ktvu staff. at 4:00 today, students at san francisco city college are making a last-ditch effort to save their school. the plan is to march to city hall. students want mayor ed lee to take action to keep the college from losing it's crede dation. enrollment for -- accreditation. enrollment is down 13%. a female driver was hospitalized with serious injuries this morning when a big rig slammed into her car.

the accident happened about 5:15 on auto mall parkway in fremont. police say the truck was traveling eastbound when it went over the center median for some reason, hit a tblit car and slam -- hit a white car and slaged into a free -- slammed into a tree. the car's roof was sheared off. the woman protected her head. >> she did something that allowed her to survive the collisionbationed on the damage to her car. >> the parkway was shut down in both directions for a time. all lanes are now open. oakland city crews are cleaning up a big tree that fell on top of a parked car near the west oakland b.a.r.t. station. we heard from one city official that no one was hurt. no details on why the tree suddenly fell. a necropsy has revealed new information about how a whale may have died. as we mentioned at the top of the newscast, the young whale

calf washed up on stinson beach around 7:00 a.m. and died several hours later. the spokesperson for the marine mammal center says the whale had signs oftra man and internal bleeding, all -- of trauma and internal bleeding. the national park service bur buried the -- buried the mammal at the beach last night. our active weather pattern has calmed down a little built -- a little bit. we had cowk -- cloud cover. everything has moved west. it's noticeably cooler. a little breeze has kicked up. our low is still there. it's still teasing us. things are not spinning around and we're not seeing anything coming up from the south right now so it looks a lot quieter. the low will go right over the bay area tomorrow. therein lies the possibility of another round of possible

thundershowers. red flag warning again. some areas canceled. other areas it goes until wednesday. 80s for some. but not as hot as yesterday when temperatures rock the -- rock keted up. you -- rocketed up. 77 in concord, instead of 87 yesterday. fairfield, 77. 60s for many. 68 santa rosa. san jose a little warmer at 79 degrees. but the key though is a much stronger delta breeze, 22, had gusts to 30 this morning. concord at 16 miles an hour. there's more of a breeze and also a bigger fog bank. some of that played into our forecast but the low is still hanging around here. a lot of lightning strikes offshore. everything has been moving out off northern mendocino county and also lifting north. so we can say goodbye to the rain right now. again, about another 36 hours we'll be in line. the cooler air will start to come in. i think the fog will get ramped up as that low moves back in. you can see some of the lightning strikes well offshore

from us. the low is much stronger than anything we see in august. looks more like a september pattern. >> the low tomorrow will come over the bay area. that could destabilize the atmosphere again. things are a lot quieter today. a little more stable air. still some fog, sun, it's cooler. mostly sunny, partly cloudy. stronger breeze. i say partly cloudy because we could get buildups in the afternoon. still hot, 90s but a lot of 70s and 80s and areas that are down a good 70 degrees. it looks tomorrow and into early thursday possibility of still some showers kind of a broad brush forecast until it clears the area. that will be on thursday. after that, back to normal. maybe cooler to below normal as we head into the weekend. next day and a half get ready. >> okay. try to get ready for labor day weekend. >> yes. it's all coming up but it looks cooler. well, more americans are expected to hit the road this

labor day weekend. according to aaa 34000000 people will travel -- 34 million people were travel more than 50 miles. that's up 4% from last year. aaa attributes the improving economy and consumer spending for the increase. 49ers ' new stadium is set to open in in -- to open. we'll have an update.

snapping a four-day losing gain, stocks, thanks to retailers. bond yields which had been rising sharply for the last several days pulled back bringing relief to investors worried about high interest rates. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 34. the nasdaq is up 28. s&p up 10. the 49ers stadium is more than halfway complete. the $1.3 billion stadium is 56% finished and two weeks ahead of schedule. the goal is to have the new stadium finished by nextup, two months before the start of the nfl preseason. next week, marks the 50th anniversary of dr. martin luther king, junior's "i have a dream" speech. tonight a gather something planned in san francisco to remember -- gathering is planned in san francisco to remember the speech. the speech was a defining moment in america's civil rights movement was delivered in washington on august 28th, 1963. tonight's event is being held
