comments for the penalty phase. in fact, in the last hour or so an attorney, a public defender assisting joseph naso called me after meeting with him in jail this afternoon to say he had no comment for me either. the 79-year-old did represent himself in this trial and today the jury sent him a message. it did not believe his argument that he knew some of these victims but did not kill them. now there were no cameras allowed in the courtroom for today's verdict. it was read a little after 2:00 p.m. six men and six women found naso guilty on all four counts of murder. prosecutors say he killed four young women who were prostitutes between 1977 and 1994. some of the strongest evidence involved 18-year-old roxene rogash who's body was found in marin in 1977. dna on her panty hose was a match for naso. today rogash's brother says he did not feel the relief he expected to feel when that guilty verdict came down. >> it will not help until that man is dead and gone.

he's just a waste of life right now. he's taken too many lives. not just my sister, there's other victims here too. >> reporter: at one point naso was named a person of interest in the alphabet murders. the victims all had matching first and last initials. joseph naso does face the death penalty. when we talked to one of the victim's family members he expects naso will likely die in prison. that penalty phase starts next month. eric rasmussen, ktvu news. we are following developing news in the east bay where a grass fire started this afternoon in the dublin hills. it was reported shortly after 2:00 this afternoon west of taxahara road in a training area. investigators say the fire was sparked by a smoke grenade used during an outdoor military training exercise. fire officials tell us flames

consume about 170 acres before the fire was contained about two hours ago. now right now crews remain on the scene looking for hot spots. we have live team coverage tonight of the fire danger in the bay area. ktvu's john sasaki is in the north bay with a look at how firefighters are preparing. first our chief meteorologist bill martin joins us in the weather center with a look at the conditions. >> they were pretty hot, certainly 90 degrees at the fire zone and the winds were west-northwest at 5 miles per hour. this was not a lightning sparked fire. but of course that's what the concerns are. check out the lightning showing up just east of the area right now. you can see it's going off in the hills around yosemite and deer valley. now working its way up into donner summit. looks like they'll stay north tonight but there's a shot tomorrow night. everyone tonight one could drift over the valley.

right here in effect in the northern counties of northern california. showers still in the tip of everyone's tongues. we will talk more about the lightning storms because they're not out of the question. >> we'll tee you then, thank you bill. john sasaki continues our live team coverage now in marin county where firefighters are on alert, john. >> reporter: frank here in marin, fire is a constant threat this time of year and possible lightning strikes just add anxiety. >> it's very, very scary. >> reporter: in the hills of mill valley, the real estate is expensive and the fire risks are high. >> the rule for my family is don't get in a car, get on a bike and go. >> our backpacks are all packed. >> reporter: in the east bay a fire just this afternoon spread quickly across dry grass and brush in dublin.

>> we're still in red flag conditions as this cut off low circulates out there in the pacific. >> reporter: john showed off the resources to keep their crews up to date on fire conditions. the prospect of more lightning has this area under a red flag warning until tomorrow afternoon. not the best news right now. >> we have county wide 45 people out of the area right now fighting fires in other parts of the state. >> reporter: st. john took us into the hill to show us how ripe conditions are for a major fire storm. on the way we encountered a mayor fire hazard. two illegally parked truck that did not leave enough road between them. near the top of summit avenue he showed us the expanse of trees and brush ready to burn. >> a lightning strike there would cause serious problems. >> it would cause serious problems, serious fire problems. >> reporter: fire officials say the dangerous is still there especially above that cool

moist air. live in mill valley, i'm john sasaki. 200 senior citizens from the bay area were evacuated today because of a fire burning out of control. the seniors were staying on camp maither and were evacuated as a precaution. the rim fire has burned more than 10,000 acres in the stanislaus. two homes were detroyed and another 200 were threatened. that's one of 11 mayor fires burning right now. according to calfire, wildfires have burned more than 92,000 acres so far this year. the city of san francisco plans to sue the state of nevada over alleged dumping of psychiatric patients. san francisco officials say two dozen patients from rosen mill psychiatric hospital were given one way bus tickets from nevada to san francisco.

the patients were homeless, pennyless and mentally ill. san francisco wants to recover $70 million for mental illness bills. before the facts were laid out today about an arrest, an emotional statement about what's going on in oakland. the u.s. attorney says enough is enough. >> the level of violence on our streets is intolerable. just recently a 16 -month-old boy was killed along with his 20-year-old father while visiting here from fresno. an 8-year-old girl was kill -ld -- killed during a sleep over. a 66-year-old woman was killed while driving down her street. >> when you add those to a violent weekend, the numbers

are rising. ken pritchett live in oakland with one women who says something has to be done here. ken. >> frank, where i am standing here on this sidewalk just a few feet back, four people were shot here on saturday. we are on telegraph avenue and in this case a suspect has been caught. now what the u.s. marshals announced today with the u.s. attorney is a sweep that nabbed alleged criminals linked to other oakland shootings. >> hi, have a good one. >> reporter: a smile on his face and barely a limp it is remarkable. >> i was standing right here. >> reporter: two days ago pat took a bullet in the leg. >> it felt like fire. >> reporter: it felt like fire. >> it felt like fire. >> reporter: he was one of the three workers at a barber shop and salon shot. patrick one of 12 people shot in oakland over the weekend. >> we live in a violent time, you know. >> the level of violence in our

streets is intolerable. >> reporter: melinda hague announced a significant two week sweep that nabbed 20 high risk wanted persons. five wanted for homicides including 25-year-old thomas walker of oakland. he's accused in a san leandro shooting that left three injured and three dead. >> we asked the department to give us your worse. >> reporter: but what we saw this weekend in oakland a dozen shot in five different incidents leaving three dead is not connected with this sweep which ended friday. oakland police promise a focused effort to stop the violence. >> maybe if they put more patrol on foot, might work out a lot better. keep us safer. i mean, they're not going to stop at all. despite being shot, patrick says he is hopeful that this shooting violence can be slowed down in the city. the u.s. marshals says these

sweeps will go on and clearly after this weekend there's more work to do. ken pritchett, ktvu news. pleasant hill is on the verge of adopting new legislation for dealers. it would also keep gun dealers away from homes, parks, schools and other community venues. it would require alarm systems and surveillance cameras. the city attorney will review the ordnance and will send it back to the city council by the end of september. prisoners on hunger strike in california would be fed intervenously not through a feeding tube if necessary. half of them are in the greatest danger. prison officials say the feeding would be done by pumping fluids directly into an inmate's bloodstream not by

placing a tube into their nose. no one is in the water at stinson beach today and it will stay that way for at least a couple of days that's because a great white was spotted near shore. ktvu's david stevenson joins us now. he's live. david, it's not only bad for anyone wants to play in the surf. a shark sighting can also be bad for business. >> reporter: julie that's right, the temporary swimming ban is still in effect. a great white shark 10 to 15 feet long was spotted here yesterday afternoon by a fishing boat and life guards. >> aware of the warning so i haven't let them get out there very far. not past his ankles. park service officials say the shark came within 15 feet of shore. swimming and fishing is now banned through saturday. and beachgoers could be sited

if they go above their knees. >> i was thinking about going swimming today or later. now i'm like, nope. >> reporter: the news is bad news for shops and stores. >> we can't rent equipment. people who are renting for the week are coming bag early, some refunds. >> reporter: shark sightings aren't unusual here. surfers in 1998 and 2002 were attacked by great white sharks just offshore. >> unfortunately every time you go in the water you're a visitor in their backyard. so you have to accept that. >> it's scary to think that the sharks are around. but it's cool, nonetheless. >> reporter: yesterday's sighting coming just hours after a fin whale beached itself. blood and oil from the whale

we are learning more tonight about a hit-and-run in oakland that left a motorcyclists seriously injured and ended with an officer involved shooting. family members of motorcyclists richard fletcher tell us road rage led to the hit-and-run that left the father of three now paralyzed from the waste down. - - waist down.

an officer spotted the system's car near orinda. david okiro approached the officer inen an aggressive manner prompted the officer to open fire. the suspect suffered injuries described as nonlife threatening. also new at 6:00, the san jose police department has revived a program designed to cut down on home truancy and home burglars. robert handa spoke to a kid who skipped class and his frustrated father. >> reporter: tabs is a program san jose police reinstated to catch truants hopefully to get them back to class or away from crime. for some young people a day of cutting class turned into a day of anguish as they awaited their fate in t.a.b. s. truancy abateness, burglary suppression. >> you need to get back in school. >> reporter: t.a.b.s.

finds and picks up truants, puts them into a center or returns them to their parents. one teenager we talked to didn't like it one bit. >> aren't you supposed to be in school? >> yeah. >> reporter: so how come you're not there. >> because it was boring. i didn't like the class so i just walked away. >> reporter: his father is frustrated. >> me and my wife, we talk to him all the time. to go to school, to learn, to find a good job in the future. and for him, everything is funny. >> reporter: t.a.b.s. is also designed to decrease home burglaries. officers say they say ending truancy keeps some kids away from criminal activity. although the teenager we talked to denied today experience expected him, his immediate plan. >> i'm going back to school and finish the work i'm missing and keep going for the rest of the day. >> reporter: his father told him t.a.b.s. is his last chance.

>> if you're in trouble and anything, just go for yourself. so don't call me, don't call your mom, just figure it out by yourself. >> reporter: it's unclear to see how t.b. -- t.a.b.s. is doing in catching truants. in santa cruz, police say there could be additional victims in a molestation case against a well known surf instructor. dillan greiner was arrested on seven counts of lewd acts with children. he engaged in relationships with two girls ages 13 and 14. they say that he also secretly recorded girls changing at his surf shop. now police say former surf students from new york and other areas have contacted them with their concerns which could lead to a federal investigation. greiner is set to be arraigned

tomorrow. an exclusive new ktvu field poll finds californians are concerned about who will provide funding for a new california health care act. 50% said they don't think there will be enough care doctors to see the patients that are expected to receive care. 6% had no opinion. voters approved of a plan to allow nurse practitioners to handled patients. 73% approved it, 21% opposed it and six personalty had no opinion. netflix announced a partnership with the wine company. financial terms haven't been confirmed. news of the winestein deal have

set stocks soaring. firefighters are on alert anticipating more lightning strikes that we saw last night. most of those were offshore in the pacific and did not hit the ground. and you've been sending us your pictures of all the lightning. here's one now from eva yavakoski. you can send us the pictures or postthem on our facebook page. and temperatures today got pretty warm. not as warm as yesterday though. it was 104 degrees in the livermore valley. fairfield a bit cooler as well. 85 in concord, and 85 in santa rosa. so temperatures today slightly cooler than they were yesterday. and some areas as much as 10 degrees. here's what we're tracking. here is the lightning and the red flag warning stays in effect. these are current lightning strikes in the last hour or so. you can see where they're showing up.

all the way north to susanville and firefighters on the west slope of the sierra nevada are paying attention. because a lot of these are producing some rain. but a lot of these are hitting the ground pretty bad. red flag warning in effect for the northern california area. so tomorrow afternoon, so we have a chance for some more of that around here. as it goes off out there some of that wraps around like it did last night or it could wrap around tomorrow night and move across the valley and into the north bay valleys and communities. we'll watch that closely for you. the computer model then has temperatures a little cooler than they were today or about the same. lots of 70s. you're going to see some 80s as well. maybe some low 90s but that's about it. it's not going to get real warm around here. not real hot, you're not going the find upper 90s or mid-90s. just going to be a real nice bay area forecast as we go into the weekend. temperatures not in the triple digits like we saw yesterday. the forecast model tomorrow

afternoon about 5:00. it has some thunderstorms popping up in the shore. those showers could get pulled across. the model doesn't do that. the low is going to be pushing inland. it has the potential to push this in. big show last night. hopefully we won't see that again. back to school, if you're getting back to school and if you're in livermore where the unified school district is getting back to school, 90 degrees or near 90 degrees. 92 in brentwood, 87 out there in the south bay. 89 in morgan hill and along the coast we have some patchy fog and temperatures in the low 60s. there's your five day forecast with the bay area weekend in view. it was great to see out over the water. great thing we didn't have the showers. >> haven't seen that in a long time. >> it's a big one. >> some of those pictures were just remarkable. >> they were. >> thanks bill.

i like those little bathrooms they have on the plane. it's like your own apartment on the plane. you close the door, the light comes on. it's like a surprise party every time you go in. standby's the worst way of flying. ever fly standby? it never works. that's why they call it standby. you end up standing there going "bye." that didn't, uh... yeah. one flight, it was this flight attendant's first day, so they didn't have a uniform for her yet. that really makes a big difference. here's just some regular person coming over, going, "would you bring your seat back all the way up?" who the hell are you?
