be a how -- miles an hour. san francisco not reporting yet. but basically in the 50s. areas of fog 3:00 this afternoon. partly sunny and breezy. once again there is the chance of an isolated thunderstorm by the afternoon and into the evening hours. still, we'll be watching it with the forecast for today. partly sunny skies. we'll cool things off from yesterday. mid- to upper 80s. right around 90 degrees. forecast highs, these numbers from yesterday. on average, coming down 3 to 6 degrees from yesterday. santa rosa, 79. san jose right about 80. livermore in the upper 80s. some more changes coming up for your weekend. and we'll let you know when the thunderstorm threat coming up. sal has an update on traffic.

live at the scene and who police are still looking for. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. the cruisers left just about 30 minutes ago. still remnants from the shooting or burglary that happened roughly around 1:30. we understand the security guard that opened fire on the suspects is being held for questioning by san jose police and he's cooperating. police say this happened just before 1:30 this morning off coleman road near the almaden expressway near a senior housing housing complex. police say he was on his way home from work when he noticed people trying to break into the car. when the security guard confronted one of the suspects, that suspect ran into another waiting car. that car tried to run over the security guard. but for some reason it stopped

a short distance away. it looked like the man was pulling something out of his waistband and that's when the security guard opened fire. >> not unusual. there are companies that allow the security guards to carry guns. i don't know the particular company. but whatever their policies and procedures are, in certain cases they are allowed to carry. >> reporter: the suspect was found a block away lying on the ground from at least one gunshot wound away from the car. san jose police say they are questioning the security guard and figuring out if he will face charges. it's unclear if he -- it's unclear if he works here at the senior apartment complex. it doesn't appear so. but police say the suspect once he's released will be booked into santa clara jail. we'll also learning that the getaway vehicle was a stolen car reported out of san jose. there are no other injuries reported here from the apartment complex. we're live here in san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. in vallejo, a suspected car

thief is facing additional charges after he allegedly put his young daughter in danger while trying to avoid police. a woman called police to bay court, telling them a neighbor stole her truck during some sort of dispute. officers went to the suspect's home. they used grash grenades, searched the man but could to the find -- grash grenade -- flash grenades but could not find the mom. he was hiding with his young daughter. he was arrested. the young daughter is in the care of relatives. a sit-in at city hall ended with 20 people being arrested. most of the group were city college of san francisco students. they were trying to get a meeting with mayor lee. they are hoping he would reverse a decision to withwithdraw the school's --

withdraw the school's accreditation. the mayor had them arrested. >> we didn't want to get arrested. it would have been much easier if the mayor had come with us. a huge sierra wildfire outside of yosemite. it's getting bigger by the hour. it's more than doubled in size. it's burning east of groveland and highway 120 has within -- has been shut down. that's the main route connecting the bay area to yosemite. look at this dramatic video. the forest service says the fire has burned more than 15 square miles. it's 0% contained. it's threatening 25 homes. tara moriarty has new information and new video and

tara will bring us the update at 7:30. our ktvu news website has a slide show of this big fire near yosemite. check it out. go to ktvu.com. there is still a big fire danger here at home. firefighters across the bay area remain on high alert this morning. ktvu's katie utehs joins us live from contra costa county where the threat of lightning is still creating a dangerous situation. good morning, katie. >> reporter: good morning. we've been battling the wind here. it's whipping my hair around. there's also high fire danger because of the dry hills behind me, they are just golden and hills are particularly dangerous as well because once they spark, fire traveled quickly up the hills. combine that with the dry lightning. all of those factors are combining to make for high fire danger across the state and in the bay area. some of those factors happened last night. let me show you video of a grass fire that shut dune highway 4. it sparked around

9:30. by early this morning, calfire cleared the scene after 3 acres had charred. you can see a car engulfed in flames. the chp says it's what sparks the grass on the hillside. there are no reports of injuries. they are still investigating what caused the initial fire. we were set up for a busy fire season because of the dry weather. the latest report says lightning has sparked 40 fires nation side. now, in a 24-hour period, there were 3400 strikes. the red flag warning for the bay area includes the north bay valleys and hills. as we mentioned, there's a risk of thunderstorms with dry lightning. that red flag warning going on throughout the day. other parts of the bay area, just very dry and windy, which puts them at high fire danger. for now, live mere martinez, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:09. san francisco police are warning about a new tactic by

thieves to scam cell phone owners. police say the most recent scheme involves at least two people, one of the thieves they will steal a phone from the victim and then run off. the second person will act like a good samaritan and chase after the suspect. the police say onces phone is tracked down. the suspect will give it back. but they are gonna ask for a cash reward in return. san francisco's night court is expanding into the south of market district. the night court program resolves low level cases like graffiti and petty theft. a set of a judge community leaders, pastors of churches, business leaders listen to the charges and decide on the punishment that can include cleaning up for community service. the city saved $330,000 by using night court instead of criminal court for those cases last year. the federal government is making progress on automatically identifying

people by their faces. the system would pair computers with video cameras to scan crowds. anyone on a government watch list would be flagged. the department of homeland security says this system would be especially useful with places where there's large crowds. happening today -- in one hour, bicyclists will gather at a san francisco intersection for a rally promoting safety. it will be held at folsom and 6th street. the scene of a deadly bike accident last week. a truck hit and killed a 24- year-old woman who just turned her bike into the busy intersection. the truck driver who hit her stayed on the scene and was not cited. this morning, the bicyclist will push for safer roads. and san francisco and berkeley could soon be home to an electric bike-sharing program, similar to programs to pedal power bikes.

the bikes would have motors to get up steel hills or carry heavy loads. 90 bikes would be installed at 25 city car stations after the first of the year. they would be available to members of city car share. but would cost at least 40% less than borrowing a car. all right. police on the peninsula made a horrifying discovery. we have a live report of a gunfire that's led to a manhunt. it's sentencing day for bradley manning. in fact, his sentencing it going on right now. the number of years he could face in prison for leaking government documents. some bay area bridges are crowded but not the golden gate where traffic on southbound looks good as you drive down to the city. in weather we're tracking more low clouds and nothing this morning. still the -- and fog this morning. still the chance of thunderstorms. we'll break down those thunderstorm chances coming up

the former army intelligence analyst convicted of leaking documents is getting sentenced in military court this morning. his sentencing was supposed to get underway about 15 minutes ago but there's been a brief delay. kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with this morning's developments. kyla? >> reporter: it's not clear why there is a delay or how long it could last but we expect manning to be sentenced this morning. he faces a maximum of 90 years in prison. prosecutors asked for at least 60 years. manning's attorneys say it should be no more than a 25- year sentence. earlier this morning,'s rived at -- earlier this morning, he arrived at fort meade.

he was convicted on espionage charges for leaking thousands of documents to wikileaks. supporters of him are holding a vigil outside of fort meade. i contacted them. they are gearing up to help manning with appeals. manning's sentence could be immediately appealed. i'm working on that story and i'll have the sentencing for you at 8:15. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. breaking news. army major nadal hasan had a chance to present his defense today at his trial for killing 13 people at fort hood, texas four years ago. he's acting as his own attorney but this morning, he called no witnesses and rested his case. hasan has sat mostly silent raising a few objections and questioning briefly a few witnesses. a group protesting

florida's stand-your-ground law released a controversial new public announcement about the trayvon martin shooting. >> are you following him? >> yes. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> okay. >> this 90-second psa uses 911 tapes used in the george zimmerman trial to re-enact that deadly confrontation. producers of the psa want viewers to sign a petition demanding that the 26 states that have stand-your-ground laws get rid of them. one of george zimmerman's lawyers called this psa wildly inaccurate. mark omeara said "by airing an interpretation of events that are easily dismissed as factual fantasy, the proponents for changes in the self-defense statutes are various -- in stair just states are damaging -- in various states are

damaging." investigators say a man tried to car crack officer jesus's truck in the parking lot of the flamingo hotel in las vegas. he crashed into a hotel, killing both men. the suspect, 29-year-old james montgomery, has been arrested on felony murder charges and officer magdalano worked in san joaquin valley. he was due to be married next month. happening today, the nixon library in the national archives are releasing the final hours of the tapes president nixon recorded for his own use. the tapes cover the period in 1973 between april and july, the final few months president nixon recorded his conversations in the white house. it follows the period in which the president admitted responsibility to for

watergate, facing impeach, he resigned in august of 1974 a little more than a year after the tapes ended. 7:18. sal is back. how's it looking? >> it's bitter because we had a -- better because we had a stalled vehicle on the bridge that was cleared. the damage is done. you can see traffic is backed up more than it normally is around the macarthur maze and when you look at the toll plaza, it's pretty full. there's a daytime baseball game at at&t park. now, the bright news, they've sped up the metering lights and cars are getting through just a little bit faster now. so that may help alleviate some of this slow traffic. but i would see if b.a.r.t. is an option for you. b.a.r.t. is doing well in and out of san francisco. no major problems if you are driving on the roads or looking at 80 between vallejo and pinole and richmond. that traffic looks pretty good. if you are driving through fremont. southbound 80 begins to slow at

238. it gets better -- the drive to fremont is not all that bad at the time. let's go to mark. we're starting off with a big blanket of low clouds and fog. here's the live camera looking out towards the golden gate bridge. the solid deck of fog. right around the bay there's still the chance of an isolated thunderstorm as we head into the afternoon hours. forecast headlines, a sun/cloud mix with a chance of an isolated thunderstorm. tomorrow, partly cloudy skies, the weekend, a little bit cooler but these are all minor temperature swings. red flag warning changes here with basically up in the north bay for the marin, sonoma and napa areas until 3:00 tomorrow morning because there is still the chance of an isolated thunderstorm favoring the north bay. right now on live stormtracker2 with the bulk of the activities out to the east and south. as i showed you, a lot of overcast for san francisco, half moon bay even fremont, hayward, oakland as well for

santa rosa up in sonoma county. current numbers are in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. livermore 61. downtown san francisco 58 and santa rosa reported the overcast at 58 as well. some pretty strong winds out of fairfield. these are sustained wind speeds, 28 miles an hour right around the bay itself. winds right around 5 to 15 miles an hour. this area of low pressure we've been talking this guy since about last weekend, it's offshore right now. by tomorrow night it will be up here -- up here. it will be crossing the bay area. as it does, we have to hold onto the chance of an isolated thunderstorm. best chance is over the north bay, especially over the high terrain. for today, partly sunny skies. here's the focus of the thunderstorm activity. a bit of a cooling trend, temperatures in the 70s, 60s and lower 80s. here is our forecast models showing ut you the showers. not -- showing you you the showers. not a lot to show you locally.

>> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. mark's here. the national weather service trimming back the warning for the rest of the bay area but extending it for the north bay, as you can see see here until 3:00 thursday morning. the lightning strikes could ignite some new fires out there. it's pretty quiet out there right now as the bulk of the showers are out to the south and east. we just have the low clouds and fog to contend with. overcast near the golden gate bridge. fremont, hayward, even up in the north bay, santa rosa reporting mostly cloudy skies at last check. current numbers are in the upper 50s to lower 60s. fairfield is windy, 59. san jose, 58 and novato in the upper 50s, at 59. forecast model, not showing you much in the way of models.

a lot of overcast peeling back to near the shore line. we'll begin with the coast. this afternoon, pasmy fog, low to mid-60s for afternoon highs right around the bay, mostly cloudy skies this morning and then partly sunny for the afternoon. 70 to 75 by 3:00. inland neighborhoods, fair skies well inland and then partly cloudy skies. temperatures will be cooler than yesterday. we'll trim them down from yesterday's highs by 3 degrees. warmer locations, upper 80s to 90 inland. we'll have more changes coming up in a few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. good morning, sal. >> good morning mark. we've had slow traffic in many areas including the bay bridge. we had an earlier stalled vehicle on the upper beck that's been removed. it's been gone for a bit but traffic will be slow. we're also looking at slow traffic on 280 in san jose.

it's getting a little better but it will be slow as you drive up to highway 17. 101 is also slow. i think people are just avoiding 101 and now 85 is getting slow as well. when one freeway gets busy, people flock to the other one. that's exactly what we see happening here in the south bay. we also see traffic that will be busy at the bay bridge toll plaza. as i told you, westbound 92, we also had an earlier accident in hayward, southbound 80 at 92. that's been cleared from the freeway. 7:33. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. and investigation is underway into a deadly shooting in east palo alto, the victim was found slumped over the steering wheel of a car. alex savidge is at the scene to tell us how police first learned about the shooting. good morning, alex. >> police say the 19-year-old man shot to death late last night was from east palo alto but did live in this area. the teenager was sitting in the driver's seat of the car.

[audio difficulties] >> we're losing our signal there with alex savidge telling us more about a deadly shooting in east palo alto. we'll try to get our connection back with alex in a moment and reconnect with him. meanwhile, we have new information about a shooting in san jose where one man was killed and three others injured. it happened monday night at a restaurant in a strip mall on alum rock between capital avenue and white road. a man who lives across the street is now telling us that that area has a history of violence. he says 12 years ago, someone was shot and killed at a different restaurant white next door. police have not released the name of the victim in monday's shooting. 7:34. big earthquake hit mexico city this morning. but so far, there's no word of significant injuries or damage. it was a 6.1 magnitude quake. it hit about 90 minutes ago. it was centered off the southern coast but it shook buildings in mexico city.

that's 250 miles away. it hit at the height of the morning rush hour. several office buildings were evacuated. emergency workers were out there checking for injuries and damage. back here at home, the huge rim fire on the outskirts of yosemite, it's more than doubled in size. this one is getting bigger every hour. it's burning east of groveland. it forced the closing of highway 20, the main route linking the bay area to yosemite. tara moriarty is in our studio now with some new information about what's going on at those fire lines. tara? >> reporter: well, this fire is out of control. crews say the potential for it to spread farther is very likely. the rim fire has jumped roads and even a river. we have zero containment. the fire is in a very difficult spot for crews to reach. that's really made it a huge challenge for firefighters. more than 10,000 acres have burned. so far, at least two homes have been destroy. 2500 homes are threatened. there is a high concern for

firefighters' safety, spoke exposure -- smoke expose sure has been an -- exposure has been an issue. the fire is not affecting yosemite national park itself. but many tourists are now turning around and going back home. under evacuation orders, 200 seniors left the camp there yesterday. vacationers have left san jose family camp and the berkeley tuolumne camp. a children's summer camp has closed as well. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. park officials say take 140 to get out of yosemite and that will add about a half-hour to your commute. tori, dave, back to you. lines near security. the guardsmen from the 29th rescue wing left moffett field to join the growing firefighting effort. other members are helping battle the wildfires burning in other parts of california. our website has a slide show of that this at ktvu.com. we're exactly one week away now from the day the bay bridge will close down for the labor day weekend. this morning, we want to show you the roads that will be the most jammed up and kof jested. they -- congested. 19th avenue and park presidio all the way up to the golden gate bridge. sir francis boulevard between san quentin and the green bray interchange, the richmond-san rafael bridge and the san mateo bridge. >> they've done so by planning ahead, being resourceful resilient, using common sense and i expect that to be the case at this time as well. another busy area will be the

880/92 interchange in hayward. the most congested dates and times will be the morning and the afternoon commutes august 29th and the 30th and the weekend from 11:00 in the morning to 6:00 at night and, of course, monday afternoon as people come back from their holiday travels. at a news briefing this afternoon, law enforcement and bridge administrators will be talking a lot more to give us information about public safety during the time that bridge is closed. and while b.a.r.t. is planning around the clock service for labor day weekend, the san francisco bay ferry will also be unking extra boats -- will be running extra boats, between san francisco and oakland, alameda, and vallejo. the ferry managers will outline their plan this afternoon, on friday. there have been several missteps in connection to the bay bridge. the latest is the bridge opening ceremony. plans for the multi-million

dollar bash were canceled. now the chronicle is reporting that governor brown will not take part in the scaled-down, chain-cutting ceremony on labor day weekend. bridge officials are reportedly still deciding who will participate in the ceremony. you will find a special section dedicated to the bay bridge at ktvu.com. you will find live drive time traffic as well as b.a.r.t. and san francisco bay ferry schedules. look for the hot topics section. we want to go back to the investigation into a deadly overnight shooting in east palo alto. alex savidge is at the scene, once again, to tell us more about the shooting. alex? >> reporter: good morning, tori. police say this 19-year-old man who was shot to death late last night was from east palo alto but didn't live in this area. for whatever reason he was sitting in the driver's seat of the car parked right here last night when the shooter

approached. you can see the shattered glass still on the ground. the victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but police say he died there. the shooting was just after 10:00 last night on the 2500 block of emmett way near cavanaugh drive. the shot spotter system detected gunfire and picked up a total of eight shots. police responded right away and found the teenager slumped over in the car. it was clear he had been shot. police are not sure if the shooter walked up to the victim and opened fire on the car or if this was a drive-by. as of right now, detectives can't say why this young man was targeted. we have no motive, no suspect information and we just got the detectives out here right now. we'll doing a neighborhood canvass. hopefully some of those questions can be answered. >> reporter: police have not released the nail of the young man shot to -- name of the

into the valley. back to the desk. san jose police still searching for suspects after this morning's attempted car break-in at a seepier citizens' -- senior citizens apartment complex. an-off duty security guard fired shots and hit one of the suspects. brian flores is live. that security guard is being held for questioning. >> reporter: police sea that's procedure to a shooting whether the shooting was justified. police say the security guard opened fire as he saw suspects trying to steal his dad's car. apparently his dad lives here. the security guard is being held at san jose police department headquarters and being questioned. we understand that he's cooperating with police this morning. what police are saying this happened just before 1:30 this morning off coleman road near the almaden expressway. police say the security guard was on his way home from work early this morning when he noticed four suspects try to break into his dad's car.

he confronted one of the suspects but that suspect was able to get away in another waiting car. that car according to police, almost hit the security guard. moments later the car stopped just a few feet away. and then one of the consider burglars got out and the security guard told police he was about to pull something from his waistband and that's when the security guard opened fire with his gun. police are now talking about whether the security guards are allowed to carry. >> if he felt he was in danger of his life, he probably was within his rights. >> reporter: the suspect was actually found on the ground about a block away with a gunshot wound. police do say the suspect, once he's released from the hospital will be booked into santa clara county jail. as for the security guard, there is a pending district attorney review about chaurls. we should learn that later -- charges.

highway 4 near martinez. the dry grass, well it -- well, it could spark with any bit of lightning or flame. add in the possibility of that dry lightning. some areas here in the bay area are under high fire danger as well as across the state of california seeing high fire danger. let me show you video. a grass fire spread quickly last night and shut down highway 4. it sparked around 9:30 last night. by early this morning, calfire cleared the scene near franklin canyon road after about 3 acres charred. you can see a car engulfed in flames. the chp says it sparked the dry hill on the grass side. they are still investigating the cause of the fire. a record dry winter et -- set us up for this. the agency's latest report says

developing news from maryland as we told you an hour ago, army private bradley manning was sentenced this morning to prison for leaking classified government information. ktvu's kyla campbell live in our washington, d.c. bureau to tell us how long he will be in prison. kyla? >> reporter: a military judge sentenced manning to 35 years in prison. he's also dishonorably discharged from the army. manning gave hundreds of

thousands of top-secret documents to the website lickky leaks. it's the largest link of classified information on the wars in iraq and afghanistan. the military judge convicted manning last month on 20 charges including six lie -- six violations of the act. his lawyers suggest no more than 25 years in prison because by then some of the documents will be declassified but the judge gave him a 35-year sentence. the aclu just released a statement saying in part, a legal system that does not distinguish between leaks to the press and the public interest and treason against the nation will deprive the public of critical information that's necessary for democratic accountability. manning's foreclosure is scheduled to talk -- attorney it scheduled to talk to reporters in about two hours. his sentence will automatically be accident to the army court of appeals. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. in another high-profile legal case, nadal hasan rested his case.

billion for the year. that's the highest in at least five years. critics say part of the problem is california's fire prevex is outdated -- prevention is outdated. they say the old methods of staging controlled burns are effective in preventing wildfires from spreading in a forest but they say those methods don't work in dry hillsides and canyons. 8:24. the california public utilities commission has new concerned about pg&e's safety records. two judges on the commission say pg&e used inaccurate documents to declare major transmission lines in san carlos and millbrae safe. when pg&e discovered the error, the judges say it was disclosed in a way that could be seen as an attempt to mislead the commission and the public. pg&e's fraud -- the city had a plan to cut the emission levels by 20% by

slowing. this morning we're looking at the toll plaza, that's improved from what it was. still, a 25-minute delay. in the news, an investigation underway into a deadly shooting in east bail -- in east palo alto, the victim found behind the wheel of a car. what are police saying about this? >> reporter: i should let you know that neighbors on this street heard this gunfire last night and a lot of them are telling me that they are disturbed by this killing that hammed very close to where they live. the teenager in this case shot was sitting in the driver's seat of a car parked right in -- right in this spot when someone came up and opened fire. you can see some shattered glass on the ground, all evidence of this deadly shooting. police are trying to figure out who is responsible. the victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. a 19-year-old young man. police say he died at the hospital earlier this morning. the shooting was around 10:00 last night in the 2500 block of

emmett way near cavanaugh drive. the department's shot spotter system detected gunfire in the area. it picked up a total of eight shots. police responded and they found this teenager slumped over in the car and it was clear that he had been shot. detectives can't say at this point, why this young man was targeted. but i talked to one woman who lives nearby. she says that kind of -- this kind of violence is rare. >> we were praying that the young man made it. it was crazy. it doesn't happen on the street. it doesn't happen in this neighborhood. homicide detectives were out here until early in the neighborhood, knocking on doors trying to find witnesses who can be helpful in the investigation and hopefully lead them to the killer. police have not released the nail of this 19-year-old man shot -- name of this 19-year- old man shot last night. a sergeant said he was from east palo alto. he didn't live in this immediate area. it's still unclear why he was parked on this street.

riv -- live this morning in east palo alto, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. the huge rim fire on the outskirts of yosemite is getting bigger every hour. it's burning east of groveland and it's forced the closure of highway 120 which is the main route linking the bay area to yosemite. tara moriarty joins us live from our studio with some new numbers lee reese -- released a short time ago. >> we just received word this fire has grown to 16,000 acres last night, it was at about 10,000 acres. this is exactly what fire officials had predicted. crews are just being pushed to the brink. later the fire is expected to swallow more trees and brush. conditions are tough. high temperatures and low humidity. the fire is difficult to reach. the terrain is steep. parts are extremely smoky. the u.s. forest service says there's 0% containment. this video shows just how powerful the flames are.

flames have been skipping across rows and even a -- roads and even a river. two homes have been destroyed. 2500 others are threatened. >> turn it over to god. there's nothing you can do. totally helpless. >> my daughter has a home up there, and reportedly, her place burned up. >> reporter: the fire is not affecting yosemite national park itself. a park official says the skies in yosemite are clear. but many touristsrying to -- tourists trying to get there are turning around and going home. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire which broke out saturday. park officials say you can still come and go from yosemite if you take highway 140 which will add a half-hour to the commute. tori, dave, back to you. >> thank you. 8:36. many people from the bay area who were enjoying a late summer vacation near yosemite had to head home earlier than planned. 200 seniors left the camp

yesterday after a fire evacuation order. vacationers have parked up and left the san jose family camp and berkeley tuolumne damp camp. the huge wildfire has forced the evacuation of a camp. you may recall a fallen tree killed a young counselor from that same camp last month. the 21-year-old was a student at uc santa cruz. our website website has a slide show of this huge fire, the rim fire. go to ktvu.com for more information. 8:37. a man from antioch badly injured in a hit-and-run may never walk around. 47-year-old richard fletcher suffered a broken back and a severely damaged final cord last friday. he was riding a bicycle when -- motorcycle when police say a car hit him from behind on highway 24 in oakland. he's married e has three children. he's the only bred winner of the family.

>> we're a strong unit. we're gonna get through it. we're not defeated by it. we're struggling. we need a lot of help. the hit-and-run driver has been identified as 35-year-old david elkiro of concord. investigators say he got into an altercation with a chp officer after the crash and was wounded by the police officer. he's now facing possible charges including attempted murder. u.s. marshals are working with oakland police trying to clean the streets of oakland of violent cles. the joint operation has captured 25 high-risk felons. four were wanted for homicide. the arrests were announced by belinda hague, the u.s. attorney. she says the level of violence in the streets should not be tolerated. last weekend alone, 12 people were shot in oakland. three were killed. one of the injured said he doesn't think the problem can be fixed. maybe if they put more patrol on foot, my -- it might

work out a lot better, keep us safer. you're not gonna stop at all. >> oakland police are promising a more focused effort to stop the violence. it's not clear how long federal officers will be involved. the port of oakland is betting big with a new plan to steer global commerce here to the bay area. port leaders want to turn the old oakland army base into an ultra-efficient court. the project would connect ships directly to trains reducing truck traffic. it 0 would expand the port's cargo business giving oakland a leg up on other busy courts up and down the posts. two races are scheduled in the america's cup challengers' series. new zealand has won you first three against italy. the series winner must win seven races to advance to the final of oracle usa.

the examiner is reporting that san francisco paid $482,000 to attorneys and planners who helped the city comply with california environmental laws. the cost could have been less but it was asewelled there could be -- but it was assumed there would be many more boats and spectators. the waters off stinson beach are still offlimits to swimmers and searchers because of a shark scare. warning signs have put up after a lifeguard spotted a 10 to 15- foot great white shark attacking a seal along the surfline. beachgoers are only allowed in the water up to their nice. the -- up to their knees. >> i was pretty disappointed. i wanted to go out and surf the last day of vacation before full start -- before school started. the sighting happened in the aim sayia where a -- same area where a young fin whale beached. scientists say it's possible

center. they say a security guard wassive drooing home when he saw it happened -- driving home when he saw it happening and minutes later, he opened fire on the suspects. brian flores has been on the supreme court and the security guard is being questioned about everything that happened this morning. brian? >> reporter: that's exactly right, dave. we understand that's standard procedure by police to investigate whether the shooting is justified. this is also pending a district attorney review this morning as well. we should learn the results later this morning. we understand that the security guard is still being questioned by san jose police and is cooperating. according to san jose police this all happened at 1:30 this morning. this off-duty security guard who does not work at the senior complex was on his way home when he noticed four suspects trying to break in his dad's car. his dad does live here. the security guard confronted one of the suspects. he was able to get away into

another waiting car. that car according to police, almost hit the security guard as it tried to speed away. moments later, the car stopped an one of the alleged car burglars got out of the rear side of the door and then it looked like the suspect was trying to pull something from his waistband and that's when the security guard, fearing for his life, pulled out his gun. >> if he felt he was in safety or his life, he was probably well within his rights to fire. >> reporter: the car the suspects were in was found nearby. the suspect was found on the ground a block away with a gunshot wound taken to a nearby hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. police say once he's released from the hospital. he will then be booked into santa clara county jail. the car the suspects were in was stolen from san jose. this morning police are looking for the other three suspects this morning. we're live in san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:48. want to check in with sal. how is the bay bridge toll

it is 8:55. a private girl scowl in palo alto says it's trying to rebuild trust with the community after admitting to a few transgressions. in a report, the school says it enrolled more students than it should have during the last school year. it also says it violated some permit conditions with the city. all of this is being outlined in a letter and released to neighbors this week. stanford is being named the second best university in the world. that's according to a new ranking done by a university in china. and uc berkeley was behind coming in at number three. the rankings took into account alumni awards and research from each university. topping the list, by the way,
