thousands of homes threatened and camps evacuated as a wildfire near yosemite grows more than 6,000 acres overnight. preparing for the closure of the bay bridge one week away. a man shot after an attempted car burglary. why police are questioning a security guard. good afternoon.

i'm tori campbell. the wildfire near yosemite is burning out of control in the stanislaus national forest and has grown significantly overnight and is still threatening thousands of homes. we begin with ken wayne at the command post who just spoke to fire officials. >> reporter: we're at the command post where the firefighting effort is being coordinated. it's like a small city. dozens of vehicles, all kinds of support equipment. what you can't see on camera are tiny flakes falling from the sky. there are ashes, it's like small snowflakes falling from the fire burning all around this camp. here are the latest numbers -- the fire has burned 16,228 acres. it's just 5% contained. there are two c-130s fighting

this fire and helicopters and other tankers trying to put this fire out. 858 firefighters are on scene. that's about 50 more than yesterday. there has been some concern about the resources available to fight this fire because there are a number of other fires burning in california and across the west. but we're told this morning that more help is on the way. >> we're getting resources. we have resources and our number one priority is firefighter and public safety. >> we're concerned, however, it's not a threat at this time. >> it's quite some distance to get there. >> it's a distance. the access for highway 120, there's no in or out traffic from highway 120 to yosemite national park. >> reporter: so far, the fire has destroyed two residences. nine structures in total have been destroyed. there are still 2500 homes threatened by the fire. a number of evacuations have

taken place. only about 60 people so far have been evacuated. but others have been told to be on standby to prepare to evacuate if the fire does move in their direction. the fire is not moving in one direction. it's moving in all directions. it's spreading outwards. more southeast and west. yosemite national park is about ten air miles away to the east of us. yosemite is not affected by the fire. it's not burning within the park boundaries. however, as you heard, 120, the main access road, is shut down. so you will have to go another way to get in and out of yosemite. no injuries reported so far this afternoon. the cause of this fire is unknown. there was lightning activity two days ago when the fire started but firefighters have not been able to get to the point of origin to try to determine exactly what caused this fire. we'll be up here all day long tracking the fire conditions and we'll give you more tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. live at the command post, ken

wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, ken. air national guardsmen based in the bay area are now on the fire lines. the guardsmen from the 129th rescue wing left moffett field to join the firefighting effort. there reports -- there are reports that other departments are in yosemite fighting the fire. the firefighters fighting the rim fire are facing tough weather conditions. mark tamayo has more on that. >> not only the weather conditions but the terrain. right now on live some tracker 2, good news, we have shower activity developing out towards the east of sierra, groveland. but the bad news, we have thunderstorms and lightning strikes being detected.

the red flag warn something still in place until 11:00 tonight. as far as the terrain -- here's another perspective. there's the fire to the east of groveland. we'll come tighter here. you get an idea with the rivers. all of the drainage basins very tough for fire crews to access part of the fire. that's been the area where the fire has been greeing the last 12 hours. as far as the current weather conditions, it's warming up. 83 to 88 degrees. we get an idea with the humidity levels. right now, 29% just outside of the groveland area and that will continue to come down over the next few hours with the possibility of some thunderstorms nearby. we have a chance of at least a few thunderstorms in the bay area. i will have more on that coming up. >> thank you, mark. we have more photos of the so-called rim fire on our website, ktvu.com. look under the images tab. we're exactly one week away now from the closure of the bay bridge. the bridge is scheduled to

close wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. and last until tours morning at 5:00 a.m. alex savidge just spoke to highway patrol about the closures and joins us live. good afternoon, alex. >> good afternoon. the chp is asking drivers to be patient and to be aware. once this hard closure is put in place starting a week from today, your choices will be limited as you approach the maze here in oakland heading towards san francisco will not be an option. that will likely mean heavy traffic in this area and a lot of frustrated drivers as well. but the chp is asking everyone to keep a cool head. >> getting frustrated, honking your horn, becoming an april aggressive driver -- an aggressive driver is not gonna get you to your destination any faster or get the roadways open sooner. >> reporter: chp officers will be doing rolling traffic breaks around 8:00 next wednesday night and caltrans crews will

begin to block transition roads towards the bay bridge toll plaza on the east side of things. on the san francisco side, all of the entrances to the bridge will be shut down at that time. there will be quite a few extra chp officers on duty during this five-day closure over the labor day holiday weekend. the chm is urging people to -- the chp is urging people to stay off the roads if they can or to take public transportation. if you have to drive, give yourself extra time and plan an alternate route to get to where you need to go. the spokesman for the chp said getting the new bay bridge open is going to be a team effort between law enforcement, work crews and drivers like you. and everyone needs to do their part. >> if all of us know our script and sing in concert, so to speak, on the right key, following all of our cues we'll get through this. if you get somebody trying to sing offkey then we'll have

some problems. >> reporter: the chp is warning people about heavy traffic on the other bay area bridges, the san mateo, the richmond, and the golden gate should have heavy traffic as well. keep that in mind. the new eastern span of the bay bridge will open back up early in the morning on tuesday, september 3rd. and the chp spokesman i talked to today told me he doesn't think this closure will meet the chaos if people stay patient. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. traffic and congestion will be a big problem when the bridge closes. but experts say there are four pager starts that will likely see different spots. they include 19th avenue and park presidio up to the golden gate bridge. sir francis drake boulevard, the richmond san rafael bridge and the san mateo bridge.

and while b.a.r.t. is planning overnight service labor day weekend to help with the san francisco traffic, the ferry will have extra runs between san francisco and oakland, alameda and vallejo. ferry managers plan to outline their plan in more detail this friday. we're also learning that the state's top politicians will be absent from the opening ceremony. governor brown is not scheduled to attend the scaled down, chain-cutting ceremony. he's scheduled to be in michigan for his wife's family reunion. you will find a special section dedicated to the bay bridge at ktvu.com. that's where we have posted b.a.r.t. and san francisco bay ferry schedules. just look for the hot topics section. we have new video of yesterday's s.w.a.t. situation in vallejo. this was the scene on bay court as officers arrested a suspected car thief after a woman told police her neighbor

stole her truck. officers found the man in a crawlspace under the home with his 5-year-old daughter. emwas arrested, he was arrest -- he was arrested. a military judge this morning sentenced bradley manning to 35 years in prison for leaking military and diplomatic secrets to the wikileaks website. the judge convicted the 25-year- old last month of 20 crimes. that included six violations of the espionage act. he will also be dishonored -- dishonorably discharged and lose pay. many of the government see these leaks as a critical problem. >> wikileaks and follow-on leaks and a pattern of people thinking they should go to the press rather than congress or their inspector general is a problem and it's a problem where american lives get lost. >> manning will receive credit for the three years he's

san jose police continue to search for suspects who tried to steal a car from a senior apartment complex in south san jose. at least one suspect was shot by an off-duty security guard. brian floor brian floor -- brian flores is live with whether the security guard will face charges. >> reporter: when we spoke to san jose police this morning, they told us it doesn't appear that the security guard will be facing charges. but that's still pending a decision by the santa clara county district attorney general's office.

weiss still being questioned at this hour. apparently he was on his way home, and saw car burglars trying to steal his dad's car at the apartments off coleman road. he confronted one of the suspects face to face tried to physically detain him. but the suspect got away in another car with three others. that car sped away almost hitting the security guard but searkds later, it stopped. one of the suspects came out, he was going to pull something from his waistband, that's what the police said, and the security guard opened fire. >> if he felt like his life was in danger, he was probably well within his right rights -- rights. >> reporter: a man whose older sister who lives at the senior apartments say they heard at least five single gunshots last night. >> saw it was police.

opened the door and talked to the police for maybe ten minutes at -- pleax inning what -- explaining what they had heard and seen and so on. >> reporter: now, that suspect is expected to recover at a nearby hospital. once he does, he will be booked into santa clara county jail and again this afternoon, police still looking for three other possible suspects. live here in san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a 19-year-old man found shot and slumped in his car died of his injuries this morning. the gunshots activated the east palo alto shot spotter system just after 10:00 p.m. it directed police to emmett way near cavanaugh drive. that's where they found the young man in his parked car. he was transported to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive. neighbors who heard the gunfire, said they are disturbed and saddened by the incident. >> we were praying the young man made it. it was crazy. it doesn't happen on the street and in this neighborhood.

>> police say the victim was from east palo alto but did not live in that neighborhood. that he had been talking to neighbors about a suspect and a possible motive. today marks six weeks since the disappearance of daphne webb of oakland. the toddler was reported missing by her father. he told police that daphne had been kidnapped by his car while he went into a store on 79th avenue. daphne's family says the city is planning to put up a missing sign for daphne on the billboard in front of the oakland arena. new information about the abduction of 16-year-old hannah anderson. there are now questions about whether her captor, james dimaggio, was her biological father. this after dimaggio's sister requested dna samples from both hannah and her younger brother, ethan. ethan and the children's mother were killed in a fire at dimaggio's home. >> there's been a lot of rumors about whether or not jim might be the father of either or both

children. we find it strange he's left all of this money without any explanation. >> dimaggio named hannah's grandmother as the beneficiary of his $110,000 life insurance policy. so far, the andersons have not responded to the dna request. a san francisco strip club that made national headlines is closing its doors in two weeks. the general manager of the lusty ladies says he can only afford about half of the $17,000 monthly rent. the club opened in 1976 and it made history in 1997 when strippers formed the exotic dancers' union, the first unionized sex business in the nation. workers tell ktvu, they are planning a big closing party. joseph naso is now eligible for the death penalty. this after a marin county jury found the 79-year-old guilty of murdering four women. some of the strong e evidence involved -- strongest evidence

involved 18-year-old roxanne rowgash. investigators say his dna matched dna found on her pantyhose. her brother attended the hearing but says the verdict won't bring him any closure. >> won't help. that man is dead and gone. he's a waste of life right now. he's taken too many lives. not just my sister but there's other victims here. >> naso acted as his own attorney and the jury is scheduled to reconvene in two weeks to decide naso's fate. after a cloudy start this morning, the clouds working their way back to near the shoreline, some hazy sunshine but still in the clear. today everybody will be cooling off a few degrees. that means the warmest locations, we're thinking upper 80s to around 90 degrees. we have the concern with thunderstorm potential. right now the latest activity has been out to the east.

the lightning strikes are being detected within the past half- hour. we have the fog still clinging across the coastline. even a few patches lingering in san francisco bay at last check. current numbers after a school start this morning, beginning to recover. san francisco, 62 degrees. some 70s to report out towards napa, fairfield, livermore, 73. san jose, 71. fairfield all morning long, pretty strong winds. this observation, 25 miles an hour. we showed it to you at 4:00 this morning. the wind is constant out towards the delta at last check. everyone else around 5 to 15 miles an hour. this red flag warning in place extended for parts of the north bay to reflect at least the chance, a slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm, so in place for today until 3:00 in the morning. basically the highest chance in the north bay. by tomorrow night it will be up here in the northeastern portion of the state.

it's crossing the bay area. as it does, we have to hold on to at least the chance of an isolated thunderstorm. so today, partly cloudy skies and a bit of a cooling trend. so temperatures mainly in the 60s, 70s and the lower 80s. the main focus of the thunder will be up to the north and to the east and that's being picked up nicely with our forecast model. you can see it this afternoon by 4:00 and 5:00, the showers developing approaching eureka moving from the south to the east and moving to the north to the west and then by tonight. not a lot of coverage to show you. tomorrow morning, low clouds and fog regroups. i suspect we'll have partly to mostly cloudy skies first thing in the morning. temperatures for today, under partly cloudy skies. a little bit cooler than yesterday. we're showing you 70s in santa rosa. san francisco, 66. brentwood, 90. once again, the slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm up in the north bay but the chances are beginning to fade. here is a look ahead. your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view and as we do approach the weekend, we'll don't to cool things off for thursday. by friday, a little bit of a bump in the numbers.

stock and bond prices are mixed right now after the much- anticipated federal minutes were released about an hour ago. the federal reserve indicated it's still on track to slow its bond purchases but really gave no indication on when that would happen. the markets started lower after several retailers, including staples and american eagle indicated disappointing profit forecasts. but home seams were up -- home sales were up. taking a look at the big board -- facebook founder and ceo, mark zuckerberg is on a mission to get more people online. he's recruiting nokia, samsung and qualcomm for a project called internet.org to cut the cost to deliver mobile access to everyone in the world. >> we use facebook to share news and catch up with our

friends. but they will use it to decide what kind of government they want. get access to healthcare for the first time ever, connect with family hundreds of miles away that they haven't seen in decades. >> he admits the project is a challenge but says only one- third of the world's population is currently online and that number needs to increase drastically. and yahoo!'s ceo marissa mayer is showing off her fashionable side in a much- talked about photo in "vogue." she's stretched out on chaise lounge. some feel it sends a rather odd message because it looks like she's on vacation rather than working hard at the top of a big corporation. comments on twitter range from demand for blamer shots of a few male ceos to a description of mayers as a nerdy, career- obsessed barbie which was actually meant as a compliment. tonight at 5:00, we're
