hours to go. caltran says the entire bridge needs to be closed about five days before the new span can open. >> the bridge will shut down wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in both directions and will be out of service during the entire holiday weekend. the bridge is scheduled to reopen on tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. we've been told, if all goes well, it could actually open earlier, some time on monday. a bolt that was tested over the weekend, failed under pressure. but engineers say that's good news. >> reporter: the bridge opening ceremony dignitaries using a

but it is a big travel weekend. the last hurrah of summer. 3.9million californians will travel 50 miles or more this weekend. 3.1million travelers will drive and a half million will take to the air. continuing coverage of the devastating rim fire burning around yosemite. we're now 9 days in the fire fight. containment is up sense r since -- since this weekend. officials say the fire is now 15% contained. it's been expensive. $44million has been spent to far to fight this rim fire. live from sonora. he spoke with people today who had to flee the fire. >> reporter: we are at the

sierra bible church in sonora. the governor was here in the fire area earlier today, and got his own update. people living in the area are certainly looking for an update, as they watch the fire burning in their direction. even though the fire has comed about 150 acres, residents have seen the progress slow considerably. and that makes them optimistic. it's been there for the last couple of nights. i'm pretty comfortable that they stopped it. >> reporter: he was encouraged. fire officials say they'll be able to tell residents the same thing. >> the resources did start coming, and clearly, a plan was put into place. and that really, that plus the weather and the fire itself

helped slow it. >> the county declared its own local disaster spot. a state declaration, which the governor did. he clearly showed his concern in coming here today. >> every day, we'll take a look at it. >> reporter: what might be seen as another vote of confidence. the governor said he did not plan to ask for federal aid at this time. robert honda, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now. we got our first look at an old camp ground owned by the city of berkely that was destroyed by the fire. it was evacuated last thursday. today, many who spent time there called it tough to

explaining what police say these new images show. >> reporter: the burglars struck in the early morning hours of august 15. today police did release video taken just before the crime happened. police say this video comes from a security camera in a parking lot, near downtown walnut creek. it shows what police say are six suspects. two individuals removing the license plates from the chevy blazer, used as the getaway vehicle. later on, police say the burglars smashed a stolen truck through the front door. police said they were unable to steal more expensive items. police are looking for six suspects and two vehicles. again, no one has been arrested

in this case. and julie, anyone who may know something about it is asked to call walnut creek police. some oakland school children may had the first cay jitters today for more than one reason. two girls, ages 8 and 11 were grazed by bullets along with their mother who is reportedly pregnant. the principal says it's important to make the school safe and supportive as possible. >> when you come inside our campus, you will see students are learning. it's a safe environment. it's a very caring environment. but unfortunately, on the streets outside of our school, that's not always the case. >> the principal says one of his faculty members is related to one of the shooting februaries. kindergarteners. believe it or not, one in six aren't showing up for class. on this first day of school,

rob roth talked with teachers and parents about a new effort to fight truancy, even among the very young. >> reporter: frank, school is out for the day. but we've learned that the truancy rate among kindergarteners is severely high. for oakland student, it was back to sool. for these kindergarteners, it was the first day of school ever. part of the challenge this year will be to make sure kindergartners keep coming to class. in kindergarten it was about 16%. reasons for truancy vary. some parents perhaps are not

new at 6:00, more than just weapons and radios in police cars in palo alto. now a new piece of lifesaving equipment will also be handy when it's needed the most. tonight, they're hosting the martin luther king jr. celebration, but there's something new there as well. devices known as electronic defibrillators. >> reporter: indeed, there are about 2,000 people expected here within the hour here at civic center plaza. in a crowd that size, it's estimated that at least four people will be at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. >> get a lot of people together, and you need to have defibrillators nearby on the spot to save lives. >> reporter: she heads the nonprofit, racing heart. her student made video helped

up. >> reporter: martinson's nonprofit provides them at no charge to big running events. >> this the last month, we've helped protect over 43,000 athletes. >> reporter: martinson is developing a smartphone app to help people find the nearest aed. in the bay area alone, sudden cardiac arrest kills about 10,000 people every year. martinson says those aed's can save many of those lives. john fowler, ktvu, channel 2 news. governor jerry brown signed off on a bill today that will help protect young athletes. the bill creates a more uniform background check for volunteer coaches. right now, some community youth sports programs run volunteer background checks on all candidates, while others do not. residents are warned about

a mountain lion sign. the authorities say it was spotted on far creek way in emerald hills east of interstate 280. that's an unincorporated area of san mateo county. people are advised not to approach it. the measure sponsored by the shooting of two mountain lion cubs. jerry hill authored the bill. it requires fish and wildlife workers to consult with animal groups when nonthreatening mountain lions wander into neighborhoods. continuing coverage of the massive rim wildfire. police officers as far away as sacramento. despite the extra help, some residents are staying put to keep an eye on their property

evening hours. tomorrow, i do expect partly cloudy skies and the low clouds won't be as far reaching as we saw earlier. here a look at stormtracker 2. the pattern is shaping up for the week ahead. the ridge of high pressure is going to nudge our way just a bit. that will drive our temperatures up. it's not going to be a huge spike, but we are looking at a subtle warm up tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. also, i want you to take a look at the flow coming in from the south, and drawing in some of that moisture. this moisture is expected to move into areas of the rim fire. it could be in good in the sense of bringing rain, but on the flip side, also could bring lightning. we'll be tracking for that for you tomorrow. back here at home, we start tomorrow morning, temperatures ranging in the 50s, once again, 56 in oakland, 55 for redwood
