good morning, thank you for waking up to us. what a pretty site to wake up to. the new and old span. it is well lit and a lot of traffic on the old span there this morning. we're 36 hours until the bridge shuts down. we'll talk about when it will reopen. we'll have the details in a few minutes. thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve can we drive to work with our windows down. >> maybe, dave, i don't have a problem with that. it's a little cooler this morning especially in the north bay system that's coming in here. the drizzle is long gone. it's mostly clear, patchy fog, 48 to 6 -- 60, it will be warmer in the afternoon.

some low 60s, but napa santa rosa, cooler reading. we'll go for sunshine and a high of # 0 degrees. temperatures look good along the coast. we'll have temperatures, 60, # 70s, 80s, 74 here's sal. >> good morning, we do have a look at the new bay bridge span, i want you to come to the tv. you can see how nice it's going to look. right now, it's not open to traffic, the old bridge on the left. the new bridge is beautiful, safe and we'ring it to be driving on it next tuesday if all goes according to plan. it will still be the same toll plaza it's backed up for a 15- minute delay. it will be interesting to see.

we'll have shoulders and stalls and minor crashes will be pulled off to the shoulder. that should make the bridge more efficient for the commute. it looks good when you get to the 205 interchange. if you're getting on in dublin it looks good to castro valley. at 2880 and 880 it's looking good there, a little bit heading north. it looks good on 880 and 680. bart has no delays and cal tran, the same. it's not major, but you'll be delayed on those lines. 6:03, let's go back to the desk. developing news, we're on the scene in danville where a 16-year-old.was killed. police say he died at a local hospital after a car crash on el captain drive. the driver of the car and

another passenger are being treated for injuries. we're joined on the scene where the accident claimed the life of a teenager. >> all three boys were set to start school later on today. the 16-year-old.who was killed was riding in this car that spun out of control late last night and the right side of the car slammed into this tree that had you see here. you can also see quite a bit of damage was done to this backyard fence. it took part of this fence out where this accident happened. it happened at 9:00 last night. a total of three teenage boys were inside this car. one passenger transported to the medical center was the 16- year-old boy, but he died at the hospital. the 17-year-old driver suffered broken ribs and a 16-year-old passenger had a broken leg. both of them are in stable

condition at the medical center in walnut creek. the chief here in danville they were set to start classes today after their summer break. >> we'll be working with knowing the school district and making sure the proper notifications are made. most importantly is working with our families. >> now, police are still piecing together exactly what led up to this accident. this he do say there are no obvious signs that the driver was under the influence or anyone in the car had been drinking before this crash and at this point police don't believe speed was a factor in this accident, but, obviously, they'll continue to investigate. one teenage boy dead and two others injured after a crash late last night in danville. alex savage, ktvu 2 channel 2 news. investigators on the scene in a house wildfire in east

oakland. it started after 3:00 this morning on 50th avenue near international boulevard. no one was hurt but the flames caused major damage. they saw a lot of quarters go in and out of that house. they're not surprised. we'll have more coming up at 6:30. >> time now 6:06, more cover of the "rim" fire which keeps growing at 234 square miles. this is the 13th largest fire in history. they're making good progress. it's about 20% contained. they're not out of danger yet. at the news conference firefighters said the majority of the resources they're based at tuolumne city and 120. they reported almost 161,000 acres have burned. that's 3 square miles, that's larger than the city of san

francisco. containment 20%. 4500 buildings are threatened. 23 have been destroyed. it's not clear how many of those are homes. as of the last update the fire had burned 15,000 into yosemite -- yosemite national park. the flames are moving towards rock and granite and it will probably burn itself out. some resources are in place at the southern edge of the yosemite national park that's to protect the rare giant sequoia as there. some of the trees are 2,000 years old. we'll take you live right to the fire lines. we'll get the latest information on the fire fight. happening today prosecutors in the east bay are expected to wrap up their case in what's being called a dirty dui trial. a sheriff's deputy is facing extortion and conspiracy.

he's accused of taking bribes in exchange for setting up men for drunk driving arrests. it was set up by women looking for leverage in divorce cases. a man was accused of sexual assault. she said he tied her up and sexually assaulted her. the judge called the allegations ridiculous -- ridiculous. he was skeptical when he said she could dial the police with her tongue and called it ridiculous. the bridge opened # 5 years ago. some are looking forward to the new bridge and others are

anxious to what's leading up to the grand opening. the bridge could possibly open a day earlier. >> it's not set in stone as we speak. they're close to finishing the final details. it's a beautiful tuesday morning. we're looking at the old and new span. pam, i believed you the new span looks like a sailboat. i agree with you on that. this is the last tuesday where you can drive on the old eastern span. the new eastern span scheduled to be closed on wednesday night until the following tuesday, september 3rd at 5:00 a.m., the new bridge is almost ready fore traffic. it's likely crews could be finished with paving, lane striping and removing barrier rails before the official ribbon cut willing ceremony and

it could open hours before labor day. >> that's one reason why labor day has been officially good to us. >> we'll have the transportation during the night. it will include 14 stations including sfo, three stops in san francisco, berkeley, oakland, walnut creek, dublin and may fair and they're helping to get ferry service across the bay. it will be open to pedestrians and bike traffic soon after that. right now, the bike path is scheduled to open at noon on tuesday. thank you. in the meantime, cal tran is making an optimistic report on the stress test on the bad bolts on the bay bridge. it started after 232 rods failed. the engineers say the bolts

out here battling the blaze, some 3800 firefighters continue to fight here as it shows no signs of slowing down, it's continuing to grow to 180,000 acres. it's 20% contained and many -- much of that containment is on the left side, they're trying to stop the fire advancing any further towards the communities of tuolumne city and all along the 1208 door door -- corridor, all the way to pine crest lake. there's a whole swath threatened by that fire. we saw hand crews and dozers out there. they're prepared with fire engines parked around the houses. meanwhile behind the fire, the monopoly up continues. we have an up close look at the

tuolumne camp. there are a couple of structures and tents spared by the fire. everything was leveled there. we saw children's toys floating around in the lake. you can get the sense how fast they had to evacuate. they tried to stop it, but they couldn't. listening to the fire behaviorist there are no signs for it to slow down. back here, this is not fog, you would think it is fog, but, in fact, this is smoke, and this is what firefighters head out into every morning, the cool air, and it caps this area off and it's not until is it or 1:00 when the temperatures heat up and we get fresh air in here. it's incredibly smokey and they're heading out on to lines. back to you. >> thank you for that.

it looks crowded on the bay bridge this morning. you said people are heading in early. i think people are getting their stuff in the city done. yesterday i was driving around, i had to drive just places in the city and a lot of people are in the city this week. they have three days to do it. the city is not closed, but the brick will be on thursday and friday. a lot of people are thinking, yikes, i have to get it done. over to the right we'll see the new span, if everything goes according to plan, that will be next tuesday, we'll show you cars driving on the span getting into the city. let's look at the toll plaza, we had an accident on the upper deck. we looked around and couldn't find it. traffic is just moderately heavy. 15 to 20-minute tray, no major problems. you can see a little bit of slowing here and there, but not a lot of red on the map. same thing for the peninsula,

new information about the number of patients given bus tickets out of town by a psychiatric hospital out of st. louis. >> 40% of mental patients reviewed were released from the psychiatric hospital without any planning for their care. san francisco district attorney plans to sue the state of nevada for patient dumping. the city of palo alto is getting an early start for end of the year crime fighting

back back-to-school forecast, martinez school district will start you off and it will go south. >> we're looking at the roads getting busier. the traffic is going to be busy as you drive through. there are no major delays here. traffic once you get on to the bridge looks good. there's a 15 to 20-minute delay at the toll plaza t san mateo bridge, the same thing goes. in san jose northbound 101 showing after 280 that's the busiest traffic going to the san jose airport. a deadly car crash in danville. a 16-year-old boy has died, two more teenagers were badly hurt. this happened just before 9:00 last night on el captain drive near claridge drive.

local high schools will be emotionally effected by this deadly crash. >> three teenage boys will be in this car. the timing of this crash was just tranning i can. all of -- tragic. all of them were set to start school this morning. they ran into a tree, they slammed this car into a tree and they smashed a fence here just before 9 last night. one passenger pulled from the car had to be transported to the medical center. this 16-year-old boy died there at the hospital. a 17-year-old boy who was driving suffered broken ribs and a 16-year-old boy who was a passenger had a broken leg. they are in stable condition this morning at the medical center in walnut creek.

the chief told us that they were all supposed to head back to class at high school after summer break. >> the people in the car were under age and young local students that should have been starting school tomorrow morning. >> reporter: now, police at this point are saying there are no obvious signs that the driver in this case was under the influence or alcohol or drugs were a factor in this accident. they have more work to do here. i did put it to a call to a police sergeant, i'm still hearing back to him to get a sense of whether the investigators are getting a idea what led up to a crash whether speed was a factor in the crash. they are not saying whether speed was a factor in the extent. again a 16-year-old boy dead, two other boys injured the night before they were set to start high school. live this morning in danville alex savage, ktvu, channel 2

news. >> a massive wildfire burning in and around yosemite national park. the fire has burned 161,000 acres. it is only 20% contained. 4500 buildings are threatened, 23 have already been destroyed. firefighters say despite the size though they are making progress against the fire. >> starting to get a handle on this thing. it's been a real tiger. it's been going around and biting its own tying -- tail and won't let go. but, we'll get there. >> the fire has cost $20 million and it's expected to rise. lawmakers budgeted $120 million for the entire season. they've spent a quarter of it. they the federal government said it would pair for # 5% of the "rim" fire. the "rim" fire is edging chose

tory the reservoir and firefighters are trying to protect it. some ash has landed in the reservoir, but it has not affected the purity. no power deliverers will resume until high voltage lines can be fixed. power is being brought in by outside sources. a well-known camp was lost to that fire from the city of berkeley. more than a thousand people gathered to remember the good times spent there. coming up why it was special to visitors and the other camps damaged by the fire. >> this nanny was allegedly driving drunk a before picking up two children at school. someone said they saw a car repeatedly hitting a school sign yesterday afternoon.

police say the driver is 46- year-old natalie win. the children had not yet gotten into the school. they were kept at the school until their parents came up to pick them up. now, that the stage is set for the america's cup yacht race, oracle u.s.a. has another challenge to the race. they are trying to figure out how three catamarans were altered with heavy fittings and illegal lead in the frames of the boat. that will be heard on wednesday in stand fran. it is a hard to believe -- if there is any misconduct, they'll decide whether they'll be penalized. the race will be september 7th. they're locked in a court battle as they investigate the massive fire in richmond a year

ago. 14,000 people reported breathing problems after the fire. the us chemical safety board and the environmental protection answer have spent the past year looking for answers but they have major ditcheses on how to handle the investigation. they're in a washington, d.c. courtroom over access to documents and other issues. contra cost a county are doing drills, they'll continue to do testing and it will go out for the next few hours. >> the parks commission will consider a plan to make it illegal to feed wildlife in parks or wild spaces. that includes feeding deduction at parks. this is after a long study that

. new this morning, investigators are trying to see what sparked a house fire in oakland. first reporter on the scene this morning and tells us what neighbors are saying, why this house was bound to burn down. >> neighbors are saying they're not surprised because this house is abandoned and enough quarters go in and out of here. they found it at 3:00 this morning. one woman was worried that her brother might be trapped inside the house. firefighters did a search and found no one. 40 firefighters were on scene this morning. one woman says her boyfriend

remembering that camp [ singing ] >> the berkeley camp had been operating near yosemite national park since 1922 now, the camp and its buildings are ruined. people say there was no place like that camp. >> it was built 90 years ago. it had this aura about it, no cellphone signals, no why few. >> they haven't made any statements about the camp there, but people say if the camp could be rebuilt, it wouldn't have the same character and charm. >> it's affecting another local camp, the san jose family camp is closed for the season a month earlier. it damaged the well there which provides water. >> of the 70tent cabins a dozen

were burned. the staff plans to remove fire damaged trees from the area. happening today bay area activists are calling for action against the governor's prison plan. they are calling to reduce the population of the inmates. the state would have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to house them. the governor would spend money on private and out of state prisons. now, they're asking legislators to vote against the plan. they want congress to raise the debt limit as soon as possible. jay could be lew says unless the government takes action they should pay the limit in october. they're looking to pay for bills already approved. the federal education department has given waivers to

states allowing them not to collect and publish information about students with learning disabilities from pour families and whose native language is not english. the campaign for high school equity says that that could mean that the students most at risk of dropping out may not receive the support they need. >> your time now, 6:46, they want parents of the youngest students to make sure that the kindergarten kids get there every day. 16% of the kindergarten kids were chronically absent. school district officials say parents don't take that first year of school seriously. >> that's when people need to be setting the foundation of learning and too many of our students are not in school. >> that hurts more than the individual student that misses class, the school district lost out of $2.2 million in state

on the time frame of the plan to tradeup. the tech site said apple will launch a trade in program. owners of older iphones will be allowed to trade in their current phones, get a newest iphone available. they're expected to unveil their newest iphone next month. it will open its first store in columbia, starbucks, next year. it promises to sell only colombian coffee there. they hope to have 6 in 2015 and more than that in 1018. facebook says government agencies are requesting its user informations to help fight crimes. law enforcement agencies from 74 countries demanded the information of 38,000 users in the first part of this year. half of those orders came from the united states.

the facebook is the latest technology company to release information about its customers. microsoft and google have done the same. george zimmerman's lawyer wants the state of florida to pay $300,000 of his legal fees. he reportedly said that last night. since zimmerman is acquitted state law requires florida to pay for his legal costs. he was acquitted of all charges including second-degree murder of the shooting death aftertrayvon martin last year. miss want your help to find a bank robbery suspect with bad hair. it happened in chase bank in palo alto after the suspect handed a teller a note. the suspect was 5-foot 11 waist 160-pound and has waist long brown frizzy hair. they don't know if it was a man or a woman.

he was wearing black to, khaki pants and a black baseball cap. they are hoping a surveillance video will help a dramatic smash and grab robbery at tiffany's. six people were gathering in the lot and two men were seen taking license plates off what police believe was the get away car. police are looking for throw separate cars seen in that video. a truck was used to smash through the front door of the tiffany's and that's where the fees went in and robbed the jewelry cases. the curtain will come down for a final time in the shakespeare santa cruz. the dean of art that you c santa cruz says this will be the final season of the company. it's been plagued with financial problems for years. the debt will be $2 million
