a 17-year-old killed just blocks from his home after celebrating the last day of summer vacation with some friends. ktvu news speaks to his family. the massive wildfire has burned more than 170,000 acres. we're one day away from the closure of the bay bridge. how public transit agencies plan to help commuters during the five-day closure.

family and friends are remembering a teenager killed just a day beginning his senior year of high school. alex savidge just spoke to the teen's family and joins us from the site where he was killed. >> reporter: good afternoon. 17-year-old robert orlando spent the last day of his summer fishing with friends at a nearby lake. he was blocks away from home last night at 9:00 at night. you can see this afternoon, people have placed flowers. there is a sign as well as the site where this accident happened. there's also a golf club sitting here on the ground. that's because orlando was on his high school golf team according to relatives i talked with today. he was all set to start his senior year today here in danville. classes started this morning. relatives said this young man was smart, outgoing and

generous. >> he was a charismatic, young man who lived to fish. he was involved in football and sports all of his life. we're devastated by the loss of him. >> reporter: this deadly crash happened at ten minutes before 9:00 last night on el capitan drive. there were three teenaged boys in the car when it veered off the road and crashed into the tree. orlando was killed in the accident. his two friends survived. the 17-year-old driver suffered broken ribs and a 16-year-old passenger had a broken leg. all three boys are students at san ramon valley high school. as the first day of classes got underway, there was a moment of silence held for orlando. the school will have grief counselors on campus in the coming days to help students who need to talk about what happened last night. orlando's classmates are trying to make sense of his sudden

death. so are his relatives and sudden friends. >> to me he was a larger than life young man that had more passion than almost -- well, than most people in life that i have ever known and the -- the family is devastated but they wanted to say thank you to the community for all of the support they've been giving. >> reporter: the two other boys injured in last night's crash are still recovering at the hospital. police don't believe alcohol was a factor in the accident but investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused the driver to lose control. his family tells me orlando had a lot he was looking forward to, he was studying for his s.a.t.s, excited about his senior year and hoping to attend college at uc davis. we're live in danville, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. livermore police are investigating a bizarre incident that ended with a four-

car accident and the arrest of one man. han oakland transient was taken into custody at the scene of the accident. police say he stole a truck from medallion industries at about 7:00 this morning. they say officers chased him until he started driving erratically. a few minutes later, he slammed into a -- into three other cars. a glass company employee said that he called 911 when he noticed the man throwing things inside the warehouse. >> the noise got louder and louder and he was -- he was tearing our warehouse apart and then he hopped in our pickup that was parked out there and took off. >> five drivers and passengers in the other cars were treated for minor injuries. he was reportedly found lying next to the overturned truck. police say he's on parole for prior burglaries. continuing our coverage now of the rim fire which is now

the state's 7th largest wildfire on record. that fire has consumed more than 179,000 acres. it is about 20% contained. now the flames have destroyed at least 23 structures and still threatening about 4500 others. there are concerns that the fire is also threatening two groves of giant sequoias inside yosemite national park. forestry officials say despite how widespread the flames are, there is evidence that fire abatement efforts over the past several years have been effective. >> even though it's catastrophic in areas when the fire has come up to the fuel treatments, it really has decreased the fire activity. i'm truly impressed. >> san francisco water officials say some ash has fallen into the -- onto the surface of the hetch hetchy reservoir. they say it's not affected the qual tiff of the water which is -- quality of the water.

the cost of fighting the rim fire is now estimated at $27.2 million so far. state lawmakers say $172 million was budgeted for the entire fire season and a quarter of that has already been spent. the federal government announced that it will reimburse the state as much as 75% of the cost of fighting that fire. now, ktvu meteorologist rosemary orozco here to tell us about the conditions firefighters can expect to face today and also the air quality in the areas. it looks pretty bad. >> yes, the poor air quality will continue. it will be another warm one. the winds are not too bad but the relative humidity is up. 82 degrees coming from one observation and the other reporting station reporting 83 with a light breeze and relative humidity 25%. this could help slow the fire a bit. but it could also make it more uncomfortable for firefighters. i want to show you the satellite radar. this is where the moisture is

being drawn from. you can see the circulation around that ridge of high pressure pulling in monsoonal moisture as well as remnants of tropical storm eva. as i move in a little bit closer, you can see rain falling over arizona but nothing over the sierra in california just yet but for the afternoon, the possibility of that isolated thunderstorms will move into the area picking it up for you at this hour. you can see light blues and greens. we welcome the rain on the other hand, any lightning that could be within these thunderstorms that could spark other fires. we'll be tracking this as the afternoon progresses and report back at the 5:00 news and i will have a look at your local forecast as well. we're getting a look at the fire from one of yosemite's famous landmarks. want to show you video of the half dome. you can see the fire line as the camera -- there we go -- pans over to the left, there's the fire line. this is the southern edge of the fire less than 20 miles from half dome. firefighters say, though,

there's no immediate danger to yosemite valley including the hotel and curry village. the fire has burned into the national park. but firefightesa isn't a hi threat because it is headed towards areas of -- of granite and will most likely burn itself out. firefighters are standing by at the southern edge of the park just in case there is a threat to the sequoia trees. any time at ktvu.com, we have more information for you and video of the rim fire. just look for it under the top story tab right on our home page. today oakland police are fighting crime on the streets and the water. for the first time, the department has teamed up with the u.s. department coast guard, alameda and san francisco police to clean up the estuary. the crew spent the morning combing the waters and -- and

will be cracking down on drug labs. >> because of the syringes found, we'll probably find meth labs on board believe it or not, a small vessel will have a meth lab on board and then we have a plan in place to provide a service to get them rehabilitated. >> by november the group will be raising sunken vessels that are leaking toxins. officials say the public should expect to see major activity on the oakland water ways over the next few months. san francisco police supervisors will soon be wearing video cameras on their chest. greg suhr says 50 plain clothes supervisors will be outfitted with $1,000 cameras in the next six weeks. eventually, about 150 cameras will be deployed. chief suhr tells the chronicle that the pilot program will allow police to record conversations when search warrants are served and to ensure proper procedures are followed. palo alto police are stepping up patrols near a most office on bayshore road after

an armed robbery in the parking lot. officers say two people in their 50s were mailing letters after midnight as they walked back to the car, two men got out of another car and approached them with a handgun. they demanded property, the man turned over his wallet. police are working today to identify the suspect. >> they will go back out and attempt to look at surveillance cameras and possibly reinterview the victims at this point. see if we've had any other similar or same crimes, anything that might tie this together. >> police are working on a sketch of the suspect. they are described as african- american. one was about 30 years old. 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. the other appeared a little younger, slightly shorter and about 170 pounds. the victims were not injured. today prosecutors in the east bay are expected to wrap up their case against a former contra costa sheriff's deputy. the deputy is facing seven counts of extortion and

conspiracy. he's accused of taking bribes in exchange for setting up men for drunk driving arrests. prosecutors say these dui stings involved women who were looking for leverage against their husband in divorce cases. a former child psychiatrist from san mateo was snrensed to -- was sentenced to eight years in prison for molesting five of his patients. prosecutors say william ayres may have sexually molested 50 boys but many cases fell outside of the statute of limitations. he was referred cases for decades despite receiving complaints of sexual abuse. he will pay a $10,000 fine and register as a sex offender. we're now nearly 38 hours away from the bay bridge shutdown. how bay area transit agencies plan to help commuters get around during the closure. police at one local university say back to school means party time. we'll tell you what kept campus police so busy the first day of

we are now just days away from being able to drive on the new span of the bay bridge. that means tomorrow night at 8:00, the entire bridge will shut down to give crews several days to prepare for the

opening. the o'ing still scheduled for 5:00 a.m. on tuesday morning but we're learning it could be earlier. that's one reason why labor day is so important, because historically the weather has been so good to us. >> project managers say it could -- it is likely that crews could be finished with the paving, striping and moving barriers rails before the official chain-cutting ceremony at 3:00 p.m. on monday so the new brick could reopen -- bridge could reopen on monday. there will be public transportation options during the closure and sal castanedo joins us from outside where a meet something going on-- meeting is going on. sal? >> reporter: well, pam, the meeting just ended. in short, they said they have us covered. transit officials said they updated plans to extend service during the bay bridge closure which happens this weekend. this morning, representatives from b.a.r.t., san francisco bay ferry and ac transit

answered questions about what alternatives bay area commuters will have during this period. the bridge will close wednesday night. that's tomorrow night, transit will pick up the slack for the following five days. >> use the ferries or if they can to modify their travel times. 8:00, 8:30 in the morning, 5:00 to 5:30 in the afternoon. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says it plans to run longer trains which will operate overnight. but only at 14 stations including the airport, 24th street, powell and baurk, 12th street, macarthur and walnut creek. the ferries will be adding direct service from alameda's main street pier instead of sharing a boat with oakland. the ferry service spokesman said the ferry service learned a lot from the b.a.r.t. strike that happened earlier this year. we were able to learn a great deal during that event. we were able to test the

oracle team is scheduled to face an international jury on allegations of cheating. the jury is investigating three catamarans altered with heavy fittings and illegal lead hidden in the boat frames. a ruling on whether the team members have engaged on any misconduct or if they will be penalized is expected on thursday. oracle team is scheduled to compete against new zealand starting september 7th. san francisco police are trying to return hundreds of stolen electronics that they recovered from a storage locker. police say they discovered laptops, tablets and cell phones after following several suspects to a storage locker on 7th and market. now they want to return the items to their rightful owners. >> i had no idea that i would ever get it back. >> that was a nice surprise? >> yes. >> police have made three arrests in connection with the stolen items. they plan to post photos of the stolen electronics on their website to help identify the

owner. moving weekend at uc berkeley resulted in a high number of alcohol-related illnesses. uc police responded to eight cases of alcohol poisoning. most occurred inside uc residence halls and all took place between 1:00 and 2:00 monday morning. the individuals were transported to the hospital. no word on how those students are doing at this point. and an investigation is underway into an early-morning fire at an east oakland home. neighbors say it was used by squatters. the two-alarm fire started on 50th avenue near international boulevard shortly before 2:00 this morning. flames shot off from the two- story home. one woman we spoke to said that she knew homeless people who used the house for shelter. >> the homeless would come and sleeve. they got nowhere to go.

i'm thinking it was a candle. >> investigators found matches on the floor of the home. but they say no one was inside during the fire. a warmer day is shaping up around the bay area giving you a live view towards sutro tower. you can see the low clouds in the backdrop. the marine layer about 1,000 feet or so and the marine layer clouds hugging the coastline. partly sunny skies expected for the coast but take a look at the rest of us. plenty of sunshine and we woke up with a lot more sunshine this morning than the day before because of it, our temperatures were cooler as we started the day but with all of the sunshine out there, we are now looking at temperatures anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees warmer than we were -- than where we were 24 hours ago. the onshore breeze is 5, 10 miles an hour through the delta. we've got temperatures beginning to warm up already. 82 in fairfield. low 80s in livermore. into the north bay, temperatures in the upper 70s.

low 70s in napa. it's a mild one in and around the bay with upper 60s san francisco. 67 in oakland. low 60s along the coast at half moon bay. so the ridge of high pressure to the east is beginning to build our way. again that will equal a warmer day for us. clouds up the coast will linger will partly cloudy skies expected for most of the day and then less of an onshore breeze is expected for the -- for the second half of the afternoon. along the coastline, 60s, around the bay 70s. upper 80s to near 90. perhaps a few low 90s for the second half of the day for our inland communities. who is gonna hit 90? clearlake. 84 for sonoma, 84 for novato. 73 for sausalito r an enjoyable day once again for most. 86 walnut creek. low 90s for antioch as well as brentwood into the santa clara valley, it will be warm. san jose, 81 for you. 90 degrees in morgan hill. along the peninsula for the second half of the day. 84 redwood city, 78 san mateo. 70 expected for san francisco.

low to mid-60s along the coast. the extended forecast here, temperatures nice and warm for inland cities but not too hot and this is pretty much where we're gonna stay. only subtle changes in the forecast. as we get through wednesday, thursday, friday. as we get into the holiday weekend, temperatures begin to trend downward and the unofficial end of summer going to feel probably a lot like fall. low 80s in the forecast by sunday for the warmer communities. just as the kids go back to school, it starts to get hot. >> right. >> thank you, rosemary. facebook stock now worth billions of dollars. find out why and apple making it easier for you to get your hands on the newest iphone.

welcome back. taking a live look at the big board this morning. dow jones down 156 -- 158 points. 1%. nasdaq down even more percentagewise, down 2% at this point. s&p 500 also down 1.5%. most of this here in the u.s. and across europe and overnight in asia because of worries about the tensions in syria. facebook now worth more than $100 billion. right now, that stock is down about $1.50 a share. that's up 2% yesterday to more than $41 a share. overall this year, facebook's stock up 55%. analysts say the boost comes
