we will take you for a trip across the old eastern span of the bay bridge for the last morning commute while it's still there. homes lost in a destructive fire right near interstate 80 in fairfield. the new information we just received about why the damage is much worse than originally thought. sodas could be banned at certain city facilities used by thousands of people in san jose. we'll explain the proposal that is being debated today and the controversy business hind it. is good morning.

there it is the bay bridge incline. the old eastern span of the bay bridge on its last morning commute before we shut it down tonight and then get ready for the new eastern span. it will be very busy next few days. it is wednesday august 28th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. steve is off today but the great mark tamayo is here. mark. >> reporter: good morning. happy to be here with you guys on this early wednesday morning. tracking low clouds and fog. dense fog that could impact your visibility for the morning commute especially out to the bay bridge itself. and the san mateo bridge. right near the immediate shoreline. santa rosa last check reporting one-half mile visibility. current temperatures in the upper 50s. san francisco 57. san jose mostly clear skies 62 and upper 50s in walnut creek. a layer of warm air is up above our heads. it's compressing the marine layer. we talk about a deep marine layer. it's basically the the

opposite. dense fog on the coast and right along the bay. away from this as we expect inland warm numbers. for the morning -- by this afternoon patchy fog. 60-65 degrees. around the area fog. inland neighborhoods starting out with partly cloudy skies. off to a mild start. 58-63. warmest locations inland. you can see the forecast highs these numbers not a big change from yesterday. could be just a little cooler up in santa rosa. we are still going mid 80s. coming up we will take a look at your five-day forecast your holiday weekend in view but sal is standing by. he has an update on traffic. we figured out mark steve is off today. he's out constantly driving the bay bridge back and forth. let's take a look at bay bridge toll plaza. there are no major problems right now on the bridge.

the traffic actually looks pretty good as you drive through. traffic is a little slow but this is the last day. there are a lot of people saying people in these first three days of the week are getting all their business done in san francisco. that way they don't have to go for the next few days. let's go to 880 north and southbound here. this traffic is moving along very nicely with no major problems passing the coliseum. i want to show you livermore valley commute it's slow from 205 over the altamont pass until you get into livermore. then the traffic is okay. there is a little bit of slow traffic right there on 238 as you drive through. if you are driving from hayward to fremont it is not a bad drive. as a matter of fact, it continues to look good all the way down into the san jose area. and as you mentioned mark it is a big day for a lot of bay area people especially bay area historians. ktvu christien kafton has the honor of being one of the reporters on this story.

christian, you getting a little sent l mental about this bridge -- sentimental about this bridge? >> reporter: i kind of a. it's the bridge we traveled back and forth to go across from the east bay to san francisco. wouldn't it be great if that bridge isophenol parting gift was a great morning commute. let's take a look as you said earlier. looking smooth as traffic comes along the s-curve. we are just 14 hours out from the bay bridge shut down. transition commuters from the old s-curve from the old eastern span there to the new eastern span there on the left. earlier we drove the bridge from oakland into san francisco at 5:15. it was smooth sailing pap little misty at times. the bridge shuts down at 8:00 tonight until tuesday morning. so crews can begin demolition. paving and lane striping on that new bridge. some drivers say despite its

problems and its history they are also feeling a little nostalgic about the bay bridge. >> i'm going to miss the bay bridge. hopefully it will be better for the new bridge. traffic will go more smoothly. >> reporter: and a reminder again while the california highway patrol will shut the bridge down at 8:00 tonight the feeder freeways to the bridge will be shutting down as early as 7:00 p.m.. so if your drive has you coming over the bridge tonight, be sure you keep that in mind. again coming out to our live picture you can see so far that morning commute looking very smooth. let's hope the eastern span the final gift to the bay area is a smooth morning commute. we will continue to monitor the situation out here and bring you more and bring you impressions that people have

traveling across the old eastern span of the bay bridge for their last morning commute. for now we are live christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. it is on the minds of medical workers. they are well aware that the bay bridge is a critical transportation rick in the bay -- link in the bay area. drivers often rely on the bay bridge to deliver medical supplies to patients around the bay. many have been working on plan b. starting tomorrow morning they plan to use other bridges and work long days to get wheelchairs and oxygen tanks to people that need them. >> it's going to be tough. they will deal with a lot of traffic. we are pretty much prepared for it. >> u.s. postal service is making adjustments to make timely deliveries of mail and packages across the bay. that includes monitoring traffic and choosing the alternate bridge that is less crowded. time is 6:06. time plans under way for a big construction project directly tied to the new bay bridge. demolition crews have a big job ahead of them.

dismantling the 76-year-old bridge. environmental restrictions mean they can't use dynamite. the old bay bridge will have to be torn down piece by piece to avoid a collapse. and the dreaded s-curve they will tear that down first. the entire demolition project may take about two years. you can get all the details about the bay bridge closure by going to our channel 2 website. we have a special section dedicated to the bay bridge project including the closure details. the alternate routes to show you what driving the new span will look like. go to ktvu.com and look under the hot topic section. while bart will be running around the clock service, it may shut down in six weeks. that is because bart and its unions are still arguing over a new contract. 60 day court ordered cooling off period ends october 10th. but the two sides will wait until september 17th to start talking about major issues like

salary hikes and benefits. once that cooling off period ends, the workers are free to go on strike again. we just received some new details about that grass fire that raced through a neighborhood in fairfield. that fire started yesterday afternoon on the side of interstate 80. firefighters now telling us that it not only destroyed two houses but damaged 13 others. now last night they said the fire had burned a total of six homes. that number grew upon further investigation. fire crews blame strong delta wins for fanning the flames. homeowners describe a chaotic scene as they scramble to collect what they could and get out. >> i was really just like more shocked. it's always so calm on this street and for something like this to happen you see everybody is outside. it's like crazy. pandemonium. >> 200 firefighters were called in to battle that fire. it burned 40 acres and took two hours to control.

investigators say it's possible they may never know exactly what sparked the fire but it could be a tossed cigarette or a spark from a passing car. time is 6:08. happening today a debate in san jose to ban sugary drinks. janine de la vega is joining us from city hall where there is already a controversy. >> reporter: if this ban is approved, then vending machines inside city hall would have to stop selling sew dance and sugary like drinks. one city council man is questioning why this is being proposed and calls it a waste of time. the proposal which is authored by councilman ash prohibits city facilities from selling soft drinks including sports drinks and certain flavored water. fruit and vegetable drinks and less than 50% real fruit or vegetable juice would also be banned. it would effect drinks being sold in city hall, community

centers, libraries, and parks. certain city venues would be exempt like the sap center because they serve commercial purposes. councilman pete constant opposes the ban calling it nanny government. he says the city needs to focus on hiring police officers and fixing streets and improving services. he sent out a plea to residents to e-mail the council and attend the rule committee to express the city needs to get their priority straight. he says he's not trying to tell people what they can and can't drink. he just doesn't want the city to provide unhealthy choices. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:10. federal government dismissed a claim that antiisrael protests at uc berkeley caused a hostile environment for jewish students. the department of education launched an investigation in july of last year. two recent graduates claim the

happening now. kyla. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're right at the public entrance. the only public entrance into today's ceremony. this crowd is growing every minute. people are walking here from around the washington, d.c. area. you can see the crowd ahead of us and just beyond them you will see white tents. that is where security folks are lined up ready to search peoples bags and let them through. and beyond the white tents you can see the lincoln memorial. that is where president obama will be speaking 5.5 hours from now. things will be happening before then. we will hear from former presidents bill clinton and jimmy carter, civil rights leaders from the 1960s and many more. we continue talking to people and the crowd that are coming today. some that wanted to be here 50 years ago but could not. i'll be working on that story for you. the san francisco human rights commission is holding a special commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the march on washington. that is at 5:00 this evening at

san francisco city hall. the commission is announcing the winners of the hero awards for 2013 at that event. it will be in the board of supervisors chambers. a funeral was held this morning for an australian baseball player killed near his oklahoma college. this morning's service was in mel bourn, australia. the hometown of christopher lane. lane was shot and killed while jogging last friday. three teenagers have been arrested for the shooting. police say the oldest of the three suspects told them they had nothing better to do so they followed lane and shot him. time is 6:17. several new developments in the kidnapping of california teenager hannah anderson. the family of the suspect james dimaggio is now backing away from the idea of asking hannah to submit to dna tests. dimaggio's family announced last week it was investigating rumors that he was the biological father of hannah and her younger brother e than.

dimaggio's sister went on pierce morgan show last night. she says dimaggio was a good man who gave his life protecting hannah. >> i remember very vividly telling my brother she is trouble. she is going to -- i said you need to watch out for that one. she is trouble. >> now on august 10th an fbi agent shot and killed james dimaggio in idaho following a nation-wide search for him and hannah. investigators have not talked about a motive for the kidnapping but they still athat hannah was a victim in every sense of the word. governor brown wants to send thousands of california inmates to private prisons instead of releasing them as a way top ease over crowding. a federal court has ordered the state to reduce the prison population by more than 9,000 inmates by the end of the year. it will cost $315,000 to rent private prison cells. the state legislature still has to approve the governors proposal.

time is 6:18. sal is back. this is a day made for you. a historic traffic day. >> it is? >> well, a little something going on. [ laughter ] >> you know what, yes, absolutely. we've been watching the bridge and you know some of us are sentimental others are not. they just want to get in and get out. this is a look at the commute at the toll plaza. there is a backup of a 15 minute delay before you make it on to the span getting into the city. by next week at this time we should be driving on the new bridge. it will still be the same toll plaza just leading you up to the new eastern span. moving along and taking a look at the livermore valley commute. this commute looks pretty good although there is a little bit of slow traffic right here at the altamont pass which is not unusual getting out to the livermore area. once you get to livermore it does look good. going to castro valley we have slow traffic right through the castro valley wide until you get on to 238. there are no major problems by

the way on interstate 880 as you drive down. already seeing a little bit of slow traffic as you drive but you can see where i'm pointing at here it's not it's just yellow and a little bit of green. there is not a lot of red yet. and we can go to 280 now. northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. that traffic is moving along nicely. mark, i just saw a tweet from you you were up creating maps at 3:00 a.m.. that is the timeline so far. it has been a busy day but a good day so far this early wednesday morning. we are tracking more fog in fact the clouds have been filling the bay over the past few hours that could impact your visibility warming up inland. tomorrow the clouds clear back to near the coastline. weekend forecast it will bring temperatures down from saturday and sunday and into monday. right now on the maps on live storm tracker 2 no storms out here. here you can see the cloud pattern. right over san francisco. even up into the north bay santa rosa reporting half mile visibility.

current temperatures are in the upper 50s to the 60s. san jose 62 degrees. santa rosa 56. and fairfield a bit windy here. winds out of the southwest topping 20 miles an hour. a quick update on the four zone forecast for the rim fire. this morning temperatures are in the mid 60s. you can see humidity levels are up into the afternoon hours as we do warm things back up into the upper 80s. the moisture levels go down about 25% and winds could be out of the south, southwest at 10-15 miles an hour. but could be locally stronger. that is the forecast for today. high pressure building in to the state once again. so we have been warming things up again. this sticks around. it backs off a little bit tomorrow and warms back up for friday. friday probably one of the warmest days of the week. inland neighborhoods today in the 80s to near 90 degrees. here's our forecast models. greens right near the immediate coastline. warmest locations here in that orange contour 80s and warmest

locations around 90 degrees. we shaved off four degrees from yesterday's 89. we are thinking 70s. san jose 80 and livermore in the upper 80s. here is your back to school forecast. walnut creek you can see temperatures starting out the day 63 degrees on track to reach the 80s with increasing sunshine throughout the afternoon hours. look ahead your five-day forecast tomorrow about the same. a little warmer by friday. labor day monday partly cloudy skies. probably one of the coolest days of the weekend. >> thank you. 6:22 is the time. nissan has turned one of the electric lease cars into a model that can drive itself. the company says it will have more than one self-driving car available for sale by 2020. it is the first auto maker to make that promise adding it is aiming for realistic prices for consumers. nissan says it's already working with stanford and other

welcome back. time now 6:25. specially trained dogs are being used at sfo to sniff out a california threat. beagles at the airport have been trained to find citrus fruit even leaves that travelers might have in their luggage. california is trying to keep out a dangerous pest. it originated in asia. it spreads a disease that kills citrus trees. >> we have a very large fresh market citrus industry here. and our industry just can't abide this disease. killing the citrus and trees. >> travelers are being asked not to brick in any citrus from overseas. so far only one disease tree has been found in california. and that was last year. torquing is now making its way into the oxford english

the shoreline. more sunshine inland and temperatures today not a big change from yesterday. a big temperature range from the lower 60s in pacifica. lots of 70s and 80s in there. some more changes for the holiday weekend. we'll have more on that coming up. we will check in with sal. he has an update on traffic. right now traffic is moving along pretty well before the morning commute. as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza it's backed up just beyond the 880 over crossing. people cueing up to get on the bridge. there are no problems on interstate 880 by the way. if you are driving by the oakland coliseum. from 205 to livermore that whole stretch you will see traffic that will be with you for 12 miles there. before you actually get into the livermore area with no major issues. as a matter of fact the traffic continues to move along. from dublin and you have slow traffic here at the castro

valley y as you drive through. if you are driving to the nimitz freeway southbound 880 just a little bit of slow traffic here as you approach hayward with no major problems. now 6:32 let's go back to the desk. this is a final morning commute for the bay area's busiest bridge that first opened back in 1936. the clock is ticking toward tonight's bay bridge shut down. christien kafton joins us now hearing from people who take that bridge. >> reporter: as you said that countdown on. 13.5 hours until the bridge shuts down. taking a look here you can see as sal said traffic starting to pick up a little bit on the bay bridge. so far it seems to be moving very smoothly through the s- curves. the big thing is transitioning traffic from that s-curve to the old eastern span to the think eastern son spann on the left hand side of your screen. we have drove the bridge ourselves this morning. we can tell you it was smooth

sailing across the bridge at that time. a little misty this morning. other than that it was a very easy ride across the bridge. the bridge will be shut down as crews put the final touches on the new eastern span. that includes paving, lane striping, and lighting. then crews will get to work demolishing the s-curve. some drivers say despite the problems and history they are feeling nostalgic about the old eastern span of the bay bridge. others say they are ready to move on to the new eastern span. >> yes. looking forward to it. but i'm not looking forward to the commute this weekend. [ laughter ] this coming next five days. >> it's going to be tough. >> yeah. >> california highway patrol will be shutting down the bridge at 8:00 tonight. the feeders will be shutting down as early as 7:00. if your drive has you coming over the bridge tonight, be sure to keep that in mind. coming out to our live shot, we can see crews out there on the

new eastern span. it looks like some work is getting under way there. we can see traffic moving on that. vehicles moving in place. obviously a great deal of work to do. today we will be contacting cal tran and finding out what they are doing this morning. how they are prepping for that workcoming up. christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. bay area transit agencies are outlining their plans to help people get across the bay while the bridge is closed. ktvu brian flores is going to have that part of the story coming up at 6:45. time is 6:35. a new development in that fairfield grass fire that damaged several homes. ktvu tara moriarty is there now. firefighters just told her that the damage is a lot worse than they thought. tara. >> reporter: firefighters say that 15 homes were impacted by this fire. 13 of them sustained some sort of damage but two of them completely gutted. you can see them behind me right here. the burnt out shells. and then if we man over to the

right -- pan over to the right you can see the huge tree. you can see how the leaves are burned off. the fire jumped the wall and hit the two houses with the worst damage it broke out shortly after 3:30 yesterday afternoon. it jumped the creek and skipped that wall we showed you and hit a wood framed roof before racing into trees and throughout the neighborhood. police went door to door evacuating at least 50 people. many homeowners were at work and rushed home. >> my neighbor is like go get a hose. i see my palm tree my backyard is on fire. just a ton of smoke. so i immediately grabbed my daughter and i was standing across the street. not able to do anything. just watch my house go down. >> reporter: firefighters had the blaze under control by 6:00 last night. again two homes just completely lost. no price tag yet on the damage. luckily no one was hurt. investigators still trying to figure out how this fire

started. whether it was from you know a cigarette or a spark from a car. they say they may never know. we'll let you know. keep you updated throughout the morning. live in fairfield i'm tara moriarty. now to our continuing coverage of the rim fire. we have just received an update on the damage. the fire has burned more than 187,000 acres or 290 square miles. that is six times the size of san francisco now. it is still about 23% contained though this morning. firefighters staying on top of that containment line. the fire has destroyed 111 structures now including 31 homes. more than 4,000 firefighters are battling the flames. starting at noon today rangers will close the popular road that is through labor day weekend to accommodate the fire crews. the fire is prompting air quality warnings throughout california and nevada.

the smoky haze has triggered emergency warnings along parts of the eastern sierra near carson city. school children were kept inside. hospitals are reporting more people than normal going to emergency rooms complaining about respiratory problems. the flames are inching toward the hetch hetchy reservoir. watt you are supply is not being effected right now. wildlife experts are telling the chronicle the impact could be felt down the road. they say the fire is scorching the soil which won't be able to absorb future rain. that makes the area extremely vulnerable to landslides meaning a buildup of sediment in the water and degrading water quality. happening today a proposal to ban sugary drinks will be debated in san jose. ktvu janine de la vega joins us from city hall where there is already a controversy. janine. >> reporter: under this

proposed ban even diet sodas with sugar substitutes would be prohibited from being sold at city hall and other city facilities. and one city councilman is calling this nanny government and he's wanting residents to oppose this to speak up. now the proposal which is authored by councilman ash prohibits city facilities from selling soft drinks including diets and sports drinking and certain flavored water. and less than 50% real fruit or vegetable use would be banned along with whole milk it would effect vending machines in city hall. community centers and libraries. councilman pete calls the proposal a colossal waste of time. the city needs to focus on hiring more police officers fixing streets and improving services not a beverage ban and they sent out a plea to residents to e-mail the council and attend today's rules committee meeting to express

come. dave. >> thank you. the next few days on bay area roads will be busy as work crews put the finishing touches on the new bay bridge. brian flores is live and walnut creek the bart station with the alternatives you need to know if you need to get in and out of san francisco this weekend. brain. >> reporter: yeah. this is one of the handful of bart stations i will be riding all night service. whether you are taking bart, riding the ferries or you are brave enough to take on the roads officials overall say be patient out there during this weekend. but as we've been talking about for several days now here are the alternatives you need to know during the closure. bart will be running a limited 24 hour service from 14 bart stations to go along with a regular service during the day. some of those stops include here at walnut creek and sfo and the coliseum. they will also provide longer trains like baseball games. another option is the fare ferries which will be expanding services at terminals.

in an attack that killed hundreds of people. this comes as u.n. inspectors head out for a second day. they are going to the site of the attack near damascus. you are looking at video of the u.n. inspectors leaving their hotel. they have quote undenial evidence that chemical weapons were used. there are reports the u.s. could report a three-day offensive hitting syria with missiles as soon as tomorrow. both iran and venezuela are speaking out against any outside military action in syria. iran's foreign minister warned of grave conditions. if any strikes are launched against syria. and venezuela's president says the u.s. allegation that the syrian government used chemical weapons quote smells the same as when the u.s. accused iraq of having weapons of mass destruction. both iran and venezuela are close allies of thesore january government.

winds out of the southwest at 23 miles an hour. high pressure has been warming up a bit over the past few days. no big changes storm track gets pushed way up to the north. for today 60s for the beaches. right around the bay 70s. warmest locations inland in the 80s. friday we will warm things back up. friday will be one of the warmest days of the workweek. here's our forecast models showing you this. and then clearing back to near the coastline we could have a few left over patches near the coast. forecast highs santa rosa 85 degrees. as you do work your way inland you will find the warm to hot numbers back up into the mid to upper 80s. oakland mid 70s. san jose is at 80. these temperatures right around 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we have breaking news to tell you about. here's a live picture. helicopter overhead our sister station kcra. over this fire in dixon. this is south of sacramento. not far off interstate 80 which of course we've been following that fire in fairfield started just off of 80 down there as well. you can see pretty decent size fire there again. this is a live picture. this is dixon. which is just south of sacramento. i want to bring that to you and we'll find out more information and bring that to you as soon as it's available. time 6:56. part of the chico state campus is closed. police are investigating a deadly tragedy.

investigators say a student was killed yesterday after a large tree branch fell on her head as she sat on a bench on campus. it happened around butte hall. universities haven't told us her name yet. still not clear why that tree branch came crashing down. a party bus shooting in san francisco early sunday morning was captured on surveillance video. you can see people running for their lives. shotted were fired from that bus. now this happened at ninth and folsom streets at 2:15 sunday morning. police were just a block away and they got there within minutes. police say a woman in her 20s may have been grazed by a bullet but no one was seriously hurt. several passengers were detained for questioning but police say few of them cooperating. so far there are no arrests. hundreds of bay area fast food workers plan to strike tomorrow. they are joining a national movement demanding bay raises for one of the fastest growing industries in the country. demanding a minimum wage of $15
