could prepare for the new eastern span. >> we have ktvu team coverage. ktvu's ken pritchett spoke to people today but we begin with ktvu's david stevenson that shows us how officers plan to stop traffic. david? >> reporter: julie, this is a typical rush hour traffic tie up here. but it could be getting worse. we learned that as we road along with the california highway patrol on how they will begin shutting down the bridge in an hour. >> reporter: he has been through three previous closures of the bay bridge but tonight has him excited. he took us on a driving tour of the new eastern span. for now he is getting ready to shut down the old span. working from san francisco to empty the bridge ahead of the

8:00 p.m. closure. the plan is to run traffic breaks. weaving cruisers out of traffic leading to the bridge. >> bring traffic to a slow. shut down the onramps and divert everybody off at the 7th street. >> reporter: the chp is trying to keep drivers on or near other freeways. >> it will be heavier than usual. but it won't be grid lock that everybody is anticipating. >> the chp is advising drivers they will start closures at 7:15 p.m. they are warning drivers not to delay if they are trying to make a final trip across the old span of bay bridge. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> today we got a look at the command control center that will coordinate the transition.

from here they will track the impact of the entire project. >> monitor traffic throughout the region. monitor how our construction vehicles are coming and going from the work site, particularly those carrying asphalt in. >> the command center will track hot spots on the construction site, checking for backups. coordination is needed for a project of this magnitude. >> some evening commuters are making their final trips across the old span of bay bridge. this is the live view. you can see there is no one going into san francisco right now. however traffic is backed up in the opposite direction heading out of san francisco as drivers head home or try to make one last trip across the eastern span. here is what it will look like when traffic crosses the new

span. this shows the view point. from the open deck as they drive past the signature tower and into oakland. >> and the five day closure of the bay bridge may be a headache for some people but other are welcoming it. ktvu's ken pritchett joins us now in a san francisco neighborhood where residents are looking forward to a few days of less traffic. ken? >> reporter: traffic flows off the interstate and through this neighborhood. hard to imagine what it will look like tomorrow with the bridge closed. we talked to one neighbor who thinks it will look like a ghost town and that is a good thing. >> reporter: when he walks his dog in his neighborhood he does so with a lot of traffic. >> as you can see with the onramps, every day it is chaos.

>> reporter: so they see the bay bridge closure for the next five days in a different light. >> chaos today. when it shuts down peace and quiet. >> reporter: for a few days. >> yes. >> reporter: a lack of traffic will be welcome for andy but with more people driving into the city on the golden gate golden gate bridge traffic will be better. along the embarcadero he isoping to see -- is hoping to see fewer cars. >> more traffic with people not knowing where they are going. >> reporter: they have been at it a while, expect more foot traffic like the last time the bridge closed and more fairs because it is a holiday weekend. >> i work hard and i think it might be beneficial.

and here we are racial profiling still being discussed across america and today in oakland. there is the sound of students. >> i have a dream. >> the sound of king. >> little black boys and little black girls will join hands with little white boys and little white girls. >> reporter: words 50 years ago, they are two oakland third graders on the importance of teaching martin luther king. >> social justice. treating people fairly. >> reporter: today at the park. >> led me to be discriminated against. >> reporter: they talked about not being treated fairly. about racial profiling. >> my personal opinion would be there is targeting occurs. >> reporter: the aclu released a report claiming black youth made up 73% of juvenile arrests from 2006 to 2012.

comments. new at 6:00 p.m. prosecutors trying to link convicted serial killer joseph naso to another murder. last week a jury convicted joseph naso of murdering four women. the case is now in the penalty phase. in court today prosecutors asked the judge if they could introduce evidence that he also killed another woman in 1981. the body was found on the shore. police are celebrating a marriage victory in the war on crime as 19 gang members have been taken off the streets. it is thanks to operation exbdous in which they joined forces to take down members of the street gang deep sea. this effort would not have been possible without a wire tap that allowed investigators to hear murders being planned.

recovery from a violent crash. the 47-year-old husband and father of three is paralyzed and now goes through physical therapy. he gave two thumbs up as he sat up on his own. >> they got me upright into a chair. feel goods. >> the crash happened on august 16 as he was riding his motorcycle home from work. investigators say an angry driver aimed his car at him following a dispute. the impact left him with a broken back and injured final cord. his daughters told me today their dad will go to a rehab facility soon. >> we have a strong family. strong dad. put it in god's hands. >> reporter: despite pain and the prospect of never walking again relatives say he is still smiling and grateful for everyone he has behind him.

>> keep the prayers coming because i have a long ways to go. >> reporter: prosecutors say the man accused of crashing into him has been charged with attempted murder and due in court in the next couple days. they are glad the driver will face justice but their focus remains on their father's recovery. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. a 25-year-old man is behind bars in connection with a shooting near a local elementary school today around 6:20 a.m. this morning. officers found a man with a gun shot wound to his leg. the victim was hospitalized and is expected to recover. police say a resident was arrested a few blocks away. officers say they also found a weapon. ktvu channel 2 news learned

the man of a man -- learned the name of a man who was shot and killed by police. he was killed yesterday after he pointed a gun at officers. officers say they attempted to pull him over yesterday afternoon. police say he sped away, lost control and then took off running. that is when officers say he pointed a gun at them. he was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene. a test is underway in contra costa county. it comes year after the chevron fire. it allows -- follows last month's criticism over evacuation alerts in alamo that went to people in the wrong area. fighting fire with fire as the rim fire continues to burn out of control into yosemite

national park. they are setting back fires from hetch hetchy reservoir to tiolga road trying to stop the spread of the fire. today the national guard launched a drone to look for spot fires. 187,000 acres have been burned and 11 homes have been destroyed destroyed and at this point it is only 23% contained. tests of the water supply from the hetch hetchy reservoir shows it remains safe and clean to drink. officials at the public utilities commission are kerned if -- concerned there could be erosion problems later. crews are working to repair equipment and lines that were damaged by the fire last week. today groups delivered petitions urging more regulation of a hazardous pesticide. they gathered 15,000 signatures

to hand in. the pesticide is linked to serious health risks. it is used in california's strawberries fields. they are asking officials to protect workers as well as people who live near the fields. >> the community agrees that it is a car sinnian and linked -- carcinogen and linked to other effects.
