condition after being pulled out of a house fire. how other family members were able to escapes. i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. a grandmother is in critical condition at this hour after a house fire in san jose. that fire started just before 9:00 this morning at a home. janine de la vega is there live and spoke with the family members who were inside the house. janine? >> reporter: claudine, family members are very upset about what happened and they are emotional drained. i spoke with the grande son inside the house -- grandson inside the house. he said the smoke filled up so quickly, he couldn't see in front of him. he managed to escape. crews are watching for hot spots. when firefighters arrived to the home on commodore drive off jackson avenue, they saw a column of smoke and heavy

flames. they received a 911 call from people inside at 8:40. who told them they had smoke up to their knees and two men were able to escape. but a woman in her 70s, the grandmother, she was trapped inside. >> firefighters entered the back side of the structure where the fire was and they were able to pull out one of the residents from the burning structure. that person is in critical condition. >> reporter: family and friends are concerned about her and are waiting to hear howed about the injuries are. her son was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but he's said to be okay. the grandson told me he did hear the smoke alarm go off. that's what alerted him to the fire because he was sleeping when the fire broke out. >> very upset. he started to talk to his sister and they are just -- they are very upset right now. they know that their mother and grandmother is in the hospital.

she wasn't breathing when they got her. i just hope to god everything turns out okay for them. >> reporter: firefighters say the roof has tiles that each we 50 pounds. they started falling down into the house. during the fire, firefighters immediately went to try to battle the flames from outside their own safety. an investigator is still on the scene. he's trying to figure out what started this fire. i just received word that they believe origin is in the kitchen and dining area but the cause is still undetermined. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we want to turn to our continuing coverage of the opening of the bay bridge. it's been closed for about 40 hours now. here's a live look at the new span. there are just over three days, as you can see from the clock on the bottom of your screen, until that new eastern span is

open. and ktvu's christien kafton is live in oakland where crews say many of the major projects have already been completed. >> reporter: as you might imagine, there's a lot of work underway. we have a crew touring the bridge. more on that later on. today, crews are focusing on the yerba buena tunnel and they are focusing on the toll plaza. crew crews -- crews say they are about a quarter of the way through the job. caltrans left a tour this morning. >> on the eastbound deck, grinding and paving is ongoing. on the westbound side, all grinding is complete. and most of the paving has been done up to the toll plaza. >> reporter: the round the clock work is currently on schedule, paving on the approach of the yerba buena tunnel has been completed. work is being completed to attach the new bike path. >> we're on schedule.

we don't want people to plan for any other time other than 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. if it looks like we can open early, we'll let everyone know. >> reporter: meanwhile, the traffic nightmare some envisioned has not developed. commuters report some delays but by and large, most people seem to be getting around okay. >> as expected the major choke points where the area is, in relation to our due tears, the san mateo bridge and the richmond bridge and the golden gate bridge, those saw increased travel times, roughly 10, 15 minutes per segment. >> reporter: crews are expected to begin striping at the toll plaza today. coming back to our live shot, we told you we have a crew on the bridge. that's my kol colleague, mike mibach. he will have more on this at 5:00 and 6:00. we'll bring you all of the updates as the bridge is developing as the developments

news. within the last half-hour, president obama said he has not decided what action to take against syria in response to the u.s. conclusion that it has used chemical weapons. >> we cannot accept a world where women and children and innocent civilians are gassed on a terrible scale. this kind of attack threatens our national security interests by violating well-established international norms against the use of chemical weapons, by further threatening friends and allies of ours in the region like israel and turkey and jordan, and it increases the risk that chemical weapons will be used in the future and fall into the hands of terrorists who might use them against us. >> earlier, secretary of state, john kerry told the nation, the united states knows the syrian government used chemical weapons on its own people and will take action.

kerry said the chemical attack killed at least 1,439 people. 426 of them children. he said it's important that the united states and other nations respond. >> it malters because a lot of other countries whose policies challenge these international norms are watching. they are watching. they want to see whether the united states and our friends mean what we say. >> kerry said any military action would not involve ground troops, would not be open-ended and would not include any involvement in syria's civil war. new details now on breaking news we brought to you during "mornings on 2." a 25-year-old man is in custody this noontime in connection with a double homicide in pinole. police are calling the man they have in custody a person of interest in the killings of two

people found in two separate bedrooms. the 25-year-old man called 911 and then met police at the door of the house at 2:30 this morning. when officers went into the house, they found the victims described as a man and a woman both over the age of 50. police have not said how they were killed. but they will say they are family members. >> this is an isolated incident. doesn't show any trends we're receiving. we're certain we have the one person of interest in custody at this time. >> there's no word on a motive. police are, cuting a search warrant at this houseexecuting -- police are, cuting a search warrant at this house -- executing a search warrant at this point. there was an officer- involved shooting. the man shot is suspected of robbing a nearby safeway.

now, the first police-involved shooting happened about three hours earlier at king and alum rock avenue. police spotted two men in a car suspected of robbing a woman at gunpoint. >> the driver proceeded to attempt to run over the officer. the officer discharged his firearm striking the driver of the vehicle. the driver was immediately take on a local area hospital where he's currently being treated for his injuries. >> police are still looking for a second suspect who got out of the car and ran. state senator jerry hill from san mateo introduced a bill which is designed to improve the safety of limousines. it follows the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge back inle may that killed five women. the bill is said to be heard today. the proposed legislation would require limousines to have two fire extinguishers and yearly inspections by the highway patrol. with a lot of people set to hit the road, law enforcement agencies are preparing to crack down on drivers.

the focus this year mainly on drunk drivers. officers from the chp and other local agencies will hit the roads starting at 6:00 tonight. last year, the chp says 35 people were killed during the labor day holiday. there were more than 1300 dui arrests statewide. the san francisco labor council held its preannual labor day breakfast. mayor lee spoke to what he called the investment of the men and women of labor have made to the innovation capital. world. >> no matter what the challenge is, your talent is always about innovating through solutions and when we as local government work with labor and with business we can accomplish a lot. >> the breakfast was attended by several labor leaders and also local and state officials including gascon and tom amiano. well, it's usually packed

well, officials at yosemite national park still expect 3,000 cars a day this labor day weekend despite the rim fire still burning in and around that park. firefighters say there was very active fire gaver overnight. more than -- behavior overnight. the fire is just 32% contained. the fire has caused respiratory problems for people living as far as 150 miles away. but 20 miles upwind in the yosemite valley, the sky is clear. smoke from the rim fire having an impact on businesses in lake tahoe. labor day weekend is usually one of the busiest holiday weekends for the area. but some hotels and resorts say reservations are down. tourism officials say people who have not canceled their plans are still concerned about the smoke. e'relanning to go up

call unfair labor practices. the workers have been in contract negotiations for the past year. better pay an benefits are some of the main sticking points. they are joining a growing protest of food and retail workers. just yesterday, several bay area fast-food workers went on strike. well, this week, ktvu and our parent company, cox media group, are bringing you stories of our cox conserve heroes. they are people in the bay area working to make a difference. today, chief meteorologist bill martin has the story of a man who helped champion the bay area ridge trail for over 20 years. >> reporter: bill long, a modern day trail blazer, joined the bay area ridge trail council over 20 years. the trail ran 160 miles. since bill became chairman, the council has added almost 200 miles and plans 200 more. >> i wouldn't say any of it was easy. some of it happened fairly quickly within two, three hours of approaching a landowner or

to 8 degrees warmer for the inland communities. 3 to 6 degrees warmer around the bay. giving you a look there at beautiful blue sky. partly cloudy skies along the coastline. mostly sunny away from the coast. and quite a warmup again underway. ridge of high pressure pulling our we just a bit. today is going to be the warmest day, mid-90s in the forecast for our inland cities for the afternoon. if you enjoy the heat, now is your chance because we do have a cooldown coming as early as your weekend. if you don't like the heat, take a look at this. today is going to be the warmest day followed by a change in temperatures as we get into your weekend. sunday's going to be the cooler day and then temperatures will begin to level off right around monday. it's due to a system that's dropping out of the gulf of alaska. i will say the system will also bring the possibility of perhaps a few sprinkles on labor day. right now it's a very slim chance. because it's a holiday weekend we'll be tracking it. of course, we'll have it for you right here on ktvu. let's get back to today. partly cloudy skies along the

the dow is down 18 points. s&p and nasdaq all done. everything is in negative territory as we keep an eye on the situation in syria and how the u.s. is going to respond to what they say are confirmed chemical attacks there. an environmental group has awarded a few bay area beaches perfect water quality grades. beaches in san francisco, alameda, contra costa county, mendocino county, all at the top of the clean beach report from the group heal the bay. more than a dozen beaches statewide received a d and an f, including beaches in san mateo, santa cruz and los angeles counties. the new york city subway system is back up and running after a two-hour delay on some lines yesterday because of two
