golden gate ferry reported more than 2000 riders. lighter than yesterday when ferries carried more than 2500 people, up more than 400 from thursday of last week. at 5:30 we'll check back in for an update on traffic on bay area commuters. in san jose, two shootings involving police officer ins a matter of hours. robert honda tells us what led to both shootings and why officers say they had no choice but to open fire. >> reporter: investigators here at san jose police headquarters are looking into both cases involving its officers, incidents that shook up people in two neighborhoods. the first officer involved shooting ended a wild series of

events that police say when two men robbed a woman at gunpoint shortly before 1:00 a.m. this morning. according to investigators, the men fled in a vehicle but were spotted by police in a parking lot. the driver crashed into a fence and in the trying to get away pinned the officer with the car. the officer shot the suspect multiple times and he was taken to the hospital. >> i heard the shots and i heard screeching and somebody hitting another car of some sort and then i came out and noticed the guy was across the street and he was screaming help me, help me, i've been shot. he says i'm dying, i'm dying: >> reporter: police arrested this man, raymond anthony cardenes after he robbed a safeway store. he brandished air soft pistols identical to real black revolvers. >> none of the rounds struck the suspect, but it did

convince him, fortunately, to surrender to the officers. >> reporter: for some people who live near the first incident, the two shootings scared them. >> i think i would just hide somewhere. i wouldn't even open the door anymore. >> reporter: police say the suspect who was shot is still being treated at the hospital. both officers are on standard paid administrative leave while the cases are being examined by the police and the district attorney's office. >> a san francisco police officer is out on bail tonight after being arrested on suspicion of child molestation. told ktvu by phone his client believed the alleged victim in the case was not a minor. >> mr. hastings was explicitly told, reasonably believed, had

some other cooblating information to conclude the person he was having consensual contact with was of legal age. >> police say they arrested hastings yesterday morning following an investigation of his alleged relationship with a 15-year-old boy. the district attorney is now reviewing the case but has not filed any charges. police say the alleged conduct did not happen while hastings was on duty. the sfpd has suspended him without pay. fire investigators are looking into what sparked a house fire that critically injured a grandmother. firefighters say when they arrived, there were heavy flames and columns of spoke coming from the roof there. the family that lives there was awakened by the smoke detector and immediately called 911. a woman in her 70s was trapped

to their parents. a limited narrow strike, that's what president obama said today, he is considering against syria. that came as the president and secretary of state laid out the administration's case that syria used chemical weapons against its own people. they say the price of not doing anything is too high. >> we cannot accept a world where women and children and innocent civilians are gassed on a terrible scale. >> reporter: the u.s. says the evidence is as clear as it is compelling. an intelligence report released by the administration today shows weapons personnel were on the ground making preparations. the regime elements were told to prepare for an attack with gas mask. and rockets launched at the time of the attack came from government-controlled areas. 1400 people killed including 420 children.

the deaths are the first homicides this year. we have been talking with police and neighbors about past problems at this hour where the victims were found. >> reporter: it happened inside this home where the trailers is in the driveway. police have been searching for evidence all day. investigators say a relative of

the two victims is under arrest. police received a 911 call at 2:30 this morning and would soon arrest the man who made the call. >> the officers met with a 25- year-old male who met them at the front door and advised there were possible injuries to some of if residents inside. >> reporter: they found the bodies of two relatives who lived at the home for more than 40 years. a relative confirmed they are 76-year-old nona and her 54- year-old son tony. >> he was just, he's a real good guy, wouldn't hurt a flea. >> we took the 25-year-old male into custody. >> reporter: a relative says the 25-year-old is jeffrey thomas flores and that he'd been living with them for years. police say they've been called to the house before. the young man had psychological problems. >> it's been kind of falling apart over there.

people parking on lawns and whatnot and just doesn't quite fit this kind of a peaceful neighborhood. >> reporter: police wouldn't say how the two relatives died, but they don't believe the killer used a gun. >> there are no other parties we're looking for. we believe this is an isolated incident. >> reporter: we checked and these are the first homicides here in almost two years. six dead birds infected with the west nile virus have turned up. four found in brentwood, one in oakley. urging people to wear mosquito repellant. humans can be infected with the virus by mosquitoes who have already bitten infected birds. since 2005, 40 people have been diagnosed with west nile and

two ended up being fatal. an environmental group called heal the bay puts out the end of summer beach report card every year and this year, most of the bay area's most popular beaches all received a grade of a plus including ocean beach and baker beach in san francisco. stinson beach and crown beach in alameda. a strong earthquake rocked alaska. it struck just before 8:30 a.m. according to the u.s. geological survey, it measured a magnitude of 7.0. it hit with a jet-like rumble that shook homes and sent some residents scrambling for cover. no injuries or serious damage have been reported. let's talk about our weather now. what can you say? doesn't get much better than this. i noticed the heat up today. >> especially inland. numbers came up quite a bit. you'll see that the marine layer is really compressed.

that means inland temperatures have an opportunity to warm as much as 5-6 degrees. fog is just getting up over the twin peaks area. the fog is going to make a play for some of the inland valleys tonight. the marine layer stays relatively shower. this is impressive looks, right? when this low pressure, see the rotation kind of going this way? when this whole area pops along the coast as we go into the next 36 hours, it will cool things off. it stretches out the marine layer and it actually brings some more clouds. those clouds will bring a chance of a sprinkle perhaps as we get into sunday night and monday. current numbers, 95 in fairfield. 88 in napa. like frank says, it was warmer today and you noticed it. we had low 80s, right now 82 in redwood city. 85 in san jose. that's hot in san jose.

marine layer is compressed for now. as we go into the next few days, low pressure, that diagram gets closer to us and the marine layer stretches out. more fog pushes inland and temperatures cool down. right through the bay area holiday weekend and in that we'll see an increase of clouds on sunday and monday that could lead -- don't change your plans for this slight chance of a sprinkle. there is a slight chance of a sprinkle. so here we are saturday afternoon. tomorrow afternoon you see the clouds starting to move in. as we get into sunday, they see the greens. there's a sprinkle or a chance of a sprinkle and thundershowers. tropical moisture will merge with this low and that will give us a chance for a thundershower. on monday, as this low kicks in, there's some moisture to work with.

rim fire burning in and around yosemite national park. the latest figures show that the blaze is now 32% contained. 315 square miles have burned. no damage to buildings in two days. meantime, evacuation orders were lifted. fire crews hope to reach full containment within 3 weeks. over the last two weeks, they have used images from a military drone flying over the fire. today we can show you some of that amazing video. we are joined with what firefighters are learning from their eye in the sky. >> reporter: they're learning quite a lot. the drone flights is still a test. these are real-time images from 19,000 feet over the sierra, so detailed you can see the bark on the trees as the flames engulf them. this california national guard predator drone flying from this base in victorville, east of
