good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday august 31st. >> let's head right over to rosemary who is cooking up a beautiful forecast for us. hi rosemary. it's going to be another nice one. not as warm in the afternoon in most cases. a little patchy fog there. low 50s to low 60s, most of us waking up to mostly sunny skies. temperatures coming down py several degrees in some cases. and cooler temperatures and the possibility of maybe a shower. it's not enough to ruin your outdoor plans. i'll have your numbers for today coming up. >> the new eastern span of the bay bridge looking great on this saturday morning. this is a live look near the toll plaza where preparation for the opening continues at

this hour. caltrans will hold a news conference to update the construction work of the new span of the bay bridge. we're joined live near the toll plaza and what's happening out there. >> good morning, yes, a lot of work going on right now. it's been going on throughout the night. take a live look. this is the empty toll plaza. >> reporter: just east of the toll plaza they've had a major accomplishment overnight. they finished doing the paving and striping on that area on the toll plaza. you can see, obviously now construction crews are working their way west. they're going to begin pacific and -- paving and they've done most of the paving up to the meter lights. they're going to do the striping here and working their way west to the approach to the new eastern span of the bay bridge. that's critical work happening today. i want to talk about what's

happening with the old eastern span of the bay bridge because cruise, i want to show you a photo here. crews are out there right now doing the demolition work at about a thousand foot section of the old bay bridge. they're taking down that portion of the bring so they can make way of -- bridge so they can make way for a new bike path. the big job is the paving and the striping and preparing the roadway to connect with a new eastern span of the bay bridge. a chp officer talked a short timeing a why that work is so important. >> motorists will notice it. it will be easier on the car. freshly paved roadway promotes better driving, less collisions, and it's a pleasure

to drive on. >> reporter: this morning crews are saying things appear to be on track. at least as they're saying right now, the definition of the old bay bridge, it's on track and the paving and restriping, they're making significant progress. that's what's taking place near the toll plaza this morning. we asked this morning how drivers are handling this closure. they said overall traffic is much heavier, but people seem to be navigating the closure fairly well. today will be a big test because a lot of people will be here on a saturday. alex savage ktvu channel 2. with the bay bridge being closed a lot are traveling across the bay. you can see this span right now. is it busier than what we see on a saturday morning.

there was a 57% increase in eastbound traffic yesterday. let's head on to the golden gate bridge socked in by fog this morning. northbound traffic out of the city has been about 13% higher than northerly al. bart service ridership has a busiest day ever. ridership is up on the golden gate ferry. yesterday morning 2,000 people took the ferry. the closure is having some impact on businesses. business has dropped by 50% since the bridge closed wednesday night. another business owner says his four shop has been closed by the bridge closure, but he doesn't mind. >> it's an inconvenience, considering what they're doing,

it's an historic thing. >> one restaurant was full. the location next to the bart station makes the ditches. he said labor day weekend is traditionally slow for business. we'll have continuing coverage for the bay bridge construction for you throughout the day. you can find more on our home page on ktvu.com. >> one man has died at a shooting and it happened at 1:30 at this club. they found what young man dead at the scene. he's been shot at least one. there may have been another victim who fled during the commotion. >> it was unknown whether it was just one victim or gunfire erupted. >> they hope swerved will again

clues as to what happened. surveillance video give them clues as to what happened. a young girl was assaulted inside a bathroom. miss say the teen was seen running from a restroom and was caught a short distance away. police are calling it an isolated witness. the victim was taken to the hospital. so far 14 cases of berm a superstar. nine of the infected people ate at the restaurant. the restaurant voluntarily closed for the weekend. this is the first health related incident in the restaurant in its 17-year existence. people are fighting to hold a historic post office.

they'll discuss wednesday's ray -- raid by police for holding a rally. organizers say police confiscated their possessions while they were attending a separate demonstration in oakland. president obama paid tribute to workers in his weekly address. >> we'll come together as a nation to honor some of our own. the working men and women of america who across the generations built this country up and helped make us who we are today. >> the president said labor day is a reminder that many americans have seen their wages stagnate while corporate profits soar. they want to end poverty and it's the highest priority. now, rosemary is saying these a slight chance of rain coming into the bay area today. >> i'd love to take it out.

a strengthened onshore breeze as well as a thick end marine layer. sunday and monday will be the cooler days. i want you to -- point you to the desert southwest. the ridge of high pressure that is around here and this being drawn around here is dragging that possibility of maybe high clouds into our area, that's for sure, but maybe a sprinkle by sunday and monday. it's a slim chance, it's barely worth mentioning and if you get rain, it won't last long. it's a light shower that passes through. take a look at the extended forecast. it's 56 in napa, low 60s in mountain view. 8 50s around the north bay, 82, 82 for san rainfall. and 74 in condition san rafale.

human body part on a beach. they made the discovery and it's not been identified, but police say it was found with discarded clouds. they have not said whether they suspect foul play. we're finding out more about two police shootings yesterday afternoon. one of the incidents ended with the arrest of 18-year-old remained cardinas. he was arrested on the street yesterday afternoon. he was armed with what looked like a real gun. officers fired at him. he whats not hit and he surrendered a few hours later. they shot another armed robbery suspect. the officer was not seriously hurt. that incident happened on king road at about 1:00 a.m. >> i came out and noticed the guy was across the street and he was screaming help me, i've

been shot. i'm dying, i'm dying. >> police say the incident started when two women robbed a woman at gun point. the officer was pinned as the suspect tried to run away. the second suspect ran off and they're still looking for him. we have new details on the double homicide in pinole. police have arrested the man in connection with the case. this 25-year-old was taken in custody this morning. he's being held on a $2 million bail. around 2:30 in the morning on friday. they called authorities to the home. when police arrived, they say he opened the door and told the residents inside have been injured. police found the bodies of a man and a woman. both are relatives of this man. they've been living in that home for 40 years. >> it's been falling apart over there, people parking on lawns and what not.

it just doesn't quite fit this peaceful neighborhood. >> authorities are not releasing the names of the victims, but it was a 76 woman and her son who is in his 50s. this is the homicide in years. they're discussing whether or not to build a new jail. they're requesting a state grant for a new jail. there was what meeting on thursday. the current jail is not seismically safe. george opposes the plan, the city should reduce the inmate population. san francisco chronical says he has not decided to re- election for sheriff. he fought to keep his job after pleading guilty for bruising his wife's arm in an argument.

>> in just about 30 minutes caltran is going to hold a news conference. alex savage is live near the toll plaza to show us what is happening right there. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of the work going on is fairly routine work, it's paving and striping work. there's a lot of it to do. that's why you have hundreds of construction workers that have been working around the clock basically. what they did overnight is they finished the paving and the striping just east of the toll plaza so as you would approach driving into san francisco is all that work is finished up. they're going to be shifting west and trying to get the road all prepared in this area as well. now, caltrans working with private construction contractors and they're going around the clock to get this bring open to traffic at --

bridge open at 5:00 a.m., another portion of the job is demolishing the old eastern span of the bay bridge. what's happening right now is a thousand foot section is being torn down piece by piece and that will make way for a new back path. installation of that back path could happen later on today. we talked about how the work demolishing the old eastern span is progressing. >> they have these boom mounted jackhammers that have eaten away at the entirety of the deck. i was able to see that myself yesterday. it's very exciting. all you see left is the skeleton of the bridge. you could see that yesterday and it will continue today. >> with the five-day forecast closure traffic has been heavy -- five-day closure, traffic has been heavy. the travel times according to

the chp are worse on friday than they were on thursday. the golden gate bridge the travel times were twice as long. the san mateo bridge is busy as well. today being a saturday, a lot of people should be out and about and you could expect heavy traffic near these bridge closures. >> alex is near the toll plaza. we want to give you another look from the caltrans traffic camera. things are looking good. both directions have been striped from what we can tell here. these ahot of work left to be done, but it's looking good. >> caltrans has taken advantage to do maintenance work on the western side of the bring.

they're repaving and changing lights. caltrans is able to get so much work done in such a short period of time is a luxury. >> we can accomplish as much as we normally do in three to four months. this is a great savings for the taxpayers, for us. it's safer. >> crews say they plan to remove all the lights in the tunnel on the island and replace them with led lights. they plan to name the bay bridge after the mayor, it was approved by the assembly, but four san francisco supervisors want to stop it from moving forward. they sent a letter asking him to hold the bill in the committee. they say naming the bridge after brown violates senate transportation committee rules. >> the art festival has

arrived. the event will have food art and music. they expect a crowd this weekend. the last time the bridge was closed during the festival they saw record setting numbers. >> we thought oh, my goodness what's going to happen and we had record attendance that weekend. >> the gate open at 9:00 and they'll stay open until 6 chock at night. they'll go towards students grants and scholarships. they've donated money to the community. we have up-to-date coverage on the bridge this morning. it's at the top of our home page on ktvu.com. investigators say the fire may have been started by marijuana growers. they told the community they

suspect an illegal marijuana growing operation may be the suspect of the fire. they are positive that it was started by people, and not by lightning. this is not the first time that an illegal marijuana growing operation has been responsible for a fire. one near seant barbara there was a fire from marijuana growing. there are more drug car tells growing marijuana on public lands in california. >> they're making progress in the "rim" fire. the fire is 35% contained. full containment is expected by september 20th. it's burned 213,000 acres since it burned out.

alerts about unhealthy air has been issued for fresno and to other counties. people who smell smoke are asked to stay inside. smoke is a concern for people with heart or lung problems and elderly and small children. officials say the water is safe to drink. some ash has fallen on the surface of the reservoir, but the quality is the same. it provides water for 2.3 million customers in the area. a 22 strike term from the san francisco fire department volunteered in the city. they sent an engine crew that is continuing to fight the fire. >> firefighters are using real time images to monitor that

they did not find anyone inside. the house had been abandoned for several years. but, homeless people often broke in. four people died after a 5.8 earthquake hit southwestern china. it happened early this morning. people had to relocate since many of the buildings were damaged and destroyed. there's no estimates as to how many people had been injured. the 6.1 quake rattled the islands last night. a # .1 quake hit there friday. there is no danger of a tsumani a there's been no report of serious damage. the people killed in a derailment in quebec last month, they're trying to file a wrongful death suit. the families anticipate wrongful death verdicts in the hundreds of millions of dollars. they want it to be part of the

train company's bankruptcy case. a woman critical injured from a house fire. four people were inside the house at the time. firefighters found a 70-year- old woman trapped in the back bedroom. she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. the woman's son was taken to the hospital suffering smoke inhalation. he's expected to recover. a smoke scam has slithered into a peninsula. animal control authorities have committed burglaries, police say scammers are relying on people's natural fear of snakes to help them get a foot in the door. an elderly couple in belmont was one of the latest, she looked very official, her uniform was labeled animal

chrome she had no hesitation of letting the woman inside. >> she was smooth. she was very smooth. >> i thought she was from. spca and then she was measuring everything. >> burglars kept them busy in the backyard for 20 minutes. it was during that afternoon an accomplishment stole cash and jewelry, all of the reports seem to be reporting the same criminal, a latino woman in her 30s with a stocky build. a fight over a parking spot led to a bizarre attack, a woman tried to park at the intersection of blithe dale avenue in center street on thursday. a woman came out of the house and confronted the driver and they hit her on the head with a rolling pin. he bit the breast and arm before leaving the scene. the victim is expected to survive. they're back at work this morning after one day of going on strike.

. for the fifth time 64-year- old diana is attempting to swim from florida to cuba. she's attempting to go from florida today if conditions are tonight. she's the first person to swim

the florida sea and she hopes to swim it in though days and this will be her final attempt. so far this month officials say there have been 450 injuries. that number is five times higher than the number reported in august of last year. they're asking for people to be cautious of the sting ray. >> there's a lot of denial that goes into it. not now, the waves are good. >> it can result in trauma, muscle cramps. it will help scare off stingrays if you move your foot and stir up the water.

the math correctly. the construction continues on schedule. the progress has been good. at the tunnel all paving out of the mouth of the tunnel, to connection that section of the bridge to the tunnel has been commoted. this morning they're working on continuing to switch out the lights of the tunnel, from the traditional lighting to led lights and later today they're going to be washing the inside of the tunnel. demolition moves forward as well. they're moving a 1,000 foot long section of the westbound approach on to the toll toll out on the bridge. that's causing a conflict with the bike path. they're scheduled to have that demolition completed late tonight or tomorrow morning. they'll be able to start putting in the temporary bike path connector.

pike bikists will be able to use it on tuesday. the original span will not be connected until early 2015. on the oakland end once traffic is on on the new bridge they'll be able to finish the connection to the bike path in two to six months. at the toll plaza the work is commote, it will be ongoing for the next 24 hours. they've begun striping on the westbound lanes heading into the toll plaza. we are not seeing any issues coming up. there's an as and a cal game today. it could cause delays with our asphalt trucks. if it does, it's not an issue we cannot recover from. any general questions on construction? i have a representative project manager from mcm, they're the

prime contractor at the work at the tunnel and the demolition, he can give you a little more information about that. >> you were removing a 1,000 foot -- >> sure, we're removing a 1,000 foot long section of the original westbound deck. it's when you start to rise up on the bridge, that is causing a conflict with the bike path. we're removing that 1,000 foot section. that work is moving along without any issues. we expect it to be wrapping up late tonight or tomorrow night. once that section has been moved out of the way we can put in the temporary connector with the bike path so people can start using it tuesday at noon. once we have traffic on the new bridge, it will take time to put it on the oakland side. and once we do, that we'll take out the temporary connector [ question asked from the floor ]

>> there's always that potential. we ask everyone to plan their weekend travel, and based it on their tuesday commute opening. 5:00 opening. >> i don't know what it will take to clean it out. i'll have depression take that question [ question asked from the floor ] [indiscernible] [. >> the s curve will be taken out as quickly as possible. the f curve is one of the things that's preventing us from building the bike path. it's impeding the path of the permanent eastbound onramp from the island on to the new bridge. there is temporary eastbound onramp. but, the curve is preventing us from building it permanent.

the s curve, as soon as the traffic is on the new bridge, the contract will have access to the s curve and the canelever demolition process [ question asked from the floor ] [indiscernible] >> you'll only be able to access it from the oakland side. we cannot go to the island because these a section of the bridge and the entire s curve is in the way, once it's demolished, fingering -- finishing that work and opening access in 2015, when the bike path opens on tuesday, you'll be able to get past the tower of the suspension bridge. >> i'm greg allen, project manager with mcm construction. we'll start with hot water and see what it does. if you have to add some form of

where the oakland bay bridge starts going over the water coming back. on the tunnel side all the pollster is in maze -- polyester work. they're doing one small joint and it's all in place. the striping will start tomorrow morning at 6:00. >> how many crew members do you have out there? >> how many crew members? probably somewhere around 150. they're working around the clock. >> thank you very much. >> and now officers daniel hill. >> good morning, officer daniel hill california highway patrol.

i want to report that we saw a pretty significantly increased congestion yesterday in the areas we expected ahot of people seemed to be leaving the peninsula area. there was a significant increase in traffic, northbound on 101 and over the golden gate bridge and eastbound on the san mateo bridge, we saw significant congestion between san francisco and marin area near the connector. sort of expected but longer. we didn't notice any significant incidents related to those things other than the traffic and the usual incidents that come along with that. today we know there are several events going on in the bay area especially in the area of berkeley and oakland with regard to the a's game and cal game coming up. we be expect delays eastbound directions in that area.

we encourage people going to those events if possible to use public transportation as it will be a quicker and more direct ride in certain cases and will up peat some of our traffic congestion. >> we haven't seen any significant incidents related to the closure, all the incidents observed have been routine so to speak. the chp has been on hand to clear up any incidents. if any incidents developed we were able to respond quickly to keep traffic moving as quickly as possible and clear out any obstruction out of the roadway. we want to remind everybody we are in what we call a maximum enforcement period for the labor day weekend. our primary goal is to keep the roadway safe to reduce the number of dui and speed related incidents and make sure that

officers are on hand to take care of that. we want to prevent a fatal incident. all of our beats are covered very completely in all the areas affected by this closure. we have additional units monitoring the closure here. those did not take away from our normal staffing priority. if there any questions about traffic i'd be happy to answer that. >> you've been listening live to a news conference. that's daniel hill with the california highway patrol. he's a spokesperson. let's talk about the increase of traffic we're seeing along the roadways. the big news from caltrans as well, everything seems to be going along just fine, it means we're on schedule, maybe even talk of opening a little earlier than schedule. >> they're saying that the paving is going on for the next 24 hours in and around the toll plaza, but they expect it to be done by sunday morning. it seems like the biggest

project left is the demolition of the part left on the klein -- incline. the demolition will be done early morning or late tonight. they can go in and start placing that temporary bike path, they want that in and they will open it on noon on tuesday. they want the bike pedestrians path to be opened by noon on tuesday. that's the biggest project left because as they said, the paving of the tunnel is all done and the striping to get under way there and get it open. >> they're happy with how it's going. alex savage is out there. he'll have a full update as well. let's talk about the alternate routes getting heavy this weekend. that's the san mateo bridge this morning. a live look at the span, you

nightclub. it happened at 1:30 at jock son square. they found a young man dead at the scene. he had been shot at least once. witnesses say there may have been another victim who fled during the commotion. >> there was some type of physical altercation, i don't know if it was with the victim or other people and gunfire erupted. they hope surveillance video will let them know and give them clues. we have new details this morning about the double homicide in pinole. 25-year-old jeffrey floes was taken into the custody and he's being held on a $2 million bail. around 2:30 a.m. he went to the home and when

police arrived floes he told them that the residents had been injured. they found the bodies of a man and a woman. both are residents -- relatives of flo es neighbors said they had been there for years. >> it doesn't fit this peaceful neighborhood. >> they didn't name the victims. but, they're known and 76 and her son 54-year-old. these are the first homicides in pinole in almost two years. the white house says it has high confidence it's responsible for a chemical attack near damascus. they support videos and other evidence collected after an attack. according to an u.s. intelligence report it killed

1400 people including 426 children. weapons inspectors left syria overnight as they considered launching a strike over the use of chemical weapons. the us inspection team -- un inspection team is having an analysis of the attacks. it could be weeks before there is a release of the findings from the security council. a bit of a fright fest. i guess we don't have that video. we'll have it after the break. we'll tell you what collapsed after a high school football game. >> i can have what you can expect for the afternoon and your holiday weekend coming up. ask me what it's like

. what is on schedule for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. you're take i go a look at a live picture of that bridge -- bridge and you got the latest information from caltran. >> caltran says so far so good, but at this hour no early opening. we're joined live with more on what caltran has planned for this morning and this afternoon. alex? >> reporter: still a lot of work to be done here. they're 60 hours into the bridge closure and everything

seems to be on schedule. there are two main areas right now. they're taking down a section of the old bay bridge and the secondary i can't that's happening is across the water here and it's at the toll plaza. there's a lot of work that has to be done to prepare those roads leading up to the eastern span. take a look at some of the work that's happening. overnight workers paved and striped the area east of the toll booths and they're in the process of doing the same thing near those metering lights as well. it should take 24 hours according to caltrans for more striping and paving. meanwhile jackhammers are being used to dismantle a thousand foot section of the bridge to make way for a new bike and pedestrians path. they talked about the challenge

of that particular project. >> it's pretty complicated. the paint on the bahamas is lead. we have to supply proper safety equipment and monitor. we have to cut each beam out and a time. >> this is what the ride will look like, the drive across the eastern span. we took a drive and this is video of that. there is the possibility of an early opening, but he said at the same time everyone should plan on the new bay bridge opening at its scheduled time tuesday at 5:00 a.m., that's when they expect it to drive across the eastern span. this is a live picture, the bridge is shut down, all the freeways leading up to the bay bridge are closed off by chp officers. everyone should expect heavy traffic today especially with sporting events happening around the bay area.

>> thanks, alex. caltrans is taking advantage of the closure to do maintenance work on the western span of the bridge. they're paving and replacing lights. they're doing inspections on that part of the bridge. caltrans says they're getting a lot of work in such a short period of time is a luxury, we can accomplish as much as we normally do in three to four months. at that's great savings for the taxpayers and us. it's safer. >> they plan to remove all the lights in the tunnel and replace them with led lights. >> former speaker and brown has hit a snag. three former supervisors want this bill from moving forward. they asked them to hold the bill in committee blocking a

to drive to their destinations, that's up 4% from last year. investigators looking into the cause of a massive fire in and around yes, sir yoas. yosemite national forest. they told the community that they suspect an illegal marijuana growing operation may be the cause of that fire. they are positive that the fire was started by people and not py lightning. they are paying -- making progress fighting the "rim" fire. full containment is expected to be september 20th. it's burned more than 213,000 acres since it broke out two weeks. some evacuation orders have been lifted. smoke from the "rim" fire has caused concerns in the area. people who see or smell smoke are being asked to stay inside.

smoke is a concern for people with heart or lung problems, the elderly and small children. the fire is burning near the hetch hetchy and they show that it has fallen on the surface of the reservoir. the water quality is good. firefighters are returning home after fighting the fire for nine days. they volunteered to protect this into the city. they sent a crew to help fight the fire. they're using real time images to monitor the fire. the predator drone allows the rim fire to view smoke and

clouds. they can see the hot spots regardless of heavy smoke. >> it has the ability to pick up a thermal image. >> firefighters say they relied on footage from helicopters that need to refuel every few hours. fog along the coast and sunshine inland, but maybe a slight chance of rain. let's check in with rosemary to see if it's still out there, that chance. >> i don't think it will spoil your plans. we have a slim chance that maybe a passing light shower, sunday into monday. for today mostly clear skies to our inland cities, around the bay and coast we're waking up with mostly cloudy skies. i'm noticing the marine layer, it's a little stronger and again these are signs of a cool down to come for the afternoon. here's a comparison for you yesterday into today and everywhere from 5 to 10 degrees

cooler in some places. we won't be as warm as we were yesterday. so the ridge of high pressure is beginning to lose its grip a bit. it's wrapping around this ridge of high pressure and will continue to move into california and that will bring a site chance of possibility for sprinkles our way. what's bringing the cool, this is deepening and moving our way. it increases the onshore breeze and picking up that marine layer. that's the good news for us. if you were enjoying the summer heat yesterday we have a cool down for your holiday weekend. we talked about the "rim" fire and how it's impacting parts of it. ahoe. there is a dense smoke advisory today. that means it's tough to see out there. the weather service will issue that advisory when you cannot

stride, if it's cancelled for snow it can be cancelled for hot weather. they filed a request to form a wrongful death claims committee h47 people were killed in the july 6th derailment. the request anticipates wrongful death verdicts for the hundreds of millions of dollars. they want the committee to be formed as part of the train companies bankruptcy case. investigators are trying to determine why a house in east los angeles collapsed. they heard a strange noise, the neighbors did, and search and rescue dogs were brought in after the collapse. homeless people break in, the house had been abandoned for years. a woman and son were critically injured in a house fire. four people were inside that house at the time. firefighters found the 70-year- old woman trapped in a back

an applies stole cash and various pieces of jewelry. all of the reports seemed to be going to the same criminal. a woman with a stocky build. a bizarre attack in visitation valley. a woman tried to park on thursday. a woman came out of the nearby house and confronted the driver before pointing out a gun and shooting her hitting her on the head with a rolling pin. the victim is expected to survive. food service workers at oakland internationallator are back to work this morning after one day of going on strike. >> we are the people. about 200 workers participated in yesterday's one day strike, the workers have been in contract negotiations for the past year. they're demanding better pay

and benefits and wanted to stop the hike in monthly health care costs. >> our company wants it, if you're single, pay over $600. their employer said it made workers a fair offer that reflection the drop in air travel. there is concern about whether air traffic controllers are too tired to do their jobs. controllers are not getting long enough breaks. rules requiring at east 9 hours off between shifts are put in place after reports that controllers are falling asleep. the faa should chose some under utilized air traffic facilities overnight to reduce controller fatigue and save money. >> it's gay pride in oakland.

to be enough to ruin outdoor plans. i'll have a look at the extended forecast, coming up. the new eastern span of the bay bridge is coming up. showing you a live look at the new bridge, right next to the old one. ktvu's alex savidge is live this morning in emeryville with more on what cal trans told bus an hour ago about this race to the finish line. >> reporter: they are making pretty good progress according to the spokesman for cal trans. they are 60 hours or so into the project. cal trans says everything is on schedule. we'll show you the view that we have here from emeryville. one of the main areas that crews are focusing on right now is the area in and around the toll plaza, where a lot of work has been happening since the bay bridge was closed down wednesday night. crews have been paving, striping the area just east of the toll booths. they completed that area overnight. now they are in the process of doing the same thing in the area that is just west of the

toll plaza, the area closer to metering lights. all this paving work happening on the oakland side should be wrapped up, we're told, in the next 24 hours or so. at the same time, there is a demolition project happening out on the old eastern span of the bay bridge. jackhammers are being used to dismantle a 1000-foot section of the cantilever bridge to make way for what will be a new bike and pedestrian path that eventually will go all the way to treasure island. this morning, a cal trans spokesman talked a lot about the progress. he was also asked this morning about whether the new eastern span could open early. >> there's always that potential, but again, right now, we ask that everyone still plan their holiday weekend travel, their tuesday morning commute based on a 5:00 a.m. tuesday opening. >> reporter: now, this is what the drive looks like across that new eastern span of the bay bridge. we took a ride yesterday. this is video. no traffic there, except for a few construction vehicles.

but this is what the view will look like once it all opens up. again, cal trans is saying that they are still on schedule, on track for the new bay bridge to open up tuesday at 5:00 in the morning. now, until the opening happens, obviously, you want to remember the bay bridge is shut down. all the roads, all the freeways transitioning to the bay bridge, also closed as well. chp says you should expect heavy traffic. they have seen traffic get heavier and heavier over the past couple of days, since wednesday's closure. they say today will be no exception. they say things will probably be very busy today. couple of major sporting events happening around the bay area. so plan accordingly. give yourself plenty of extra time. live this morning in emeryville, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. well, with the bay bridge being closed, a lot of drivers are resorting to that bridge, the san mateo bridge, in their efforts to get across the bay. this is a live look at the span right now. and it's pretty busy out there, although moving along just fine. the chp says there was a 57%

increase in eastbound traffic yesterday. let's give you a look at the golden gate bridge, another major alternate route that is socked in by a little, or maybe a lot of fog. seems like a little more than we saw earlier. chp says northbound traffic, that's getting out of the city, has been about 13% higher than normal, but traffic moving fine in both directions. now let's talk about bart and ferry service. ridership is also up on those two modes of transportation since the bridge closed. bart released new numbers, showing yesterday was bart's busiest day ever with 457,000 riders. thursday was bart's third busiest day ever with 475,000 riders. ridership is also up on the golden gate ferry. yesterday morning, more than 2000 people took the ferry from larkspur to san francisco. the bay bridge closure is having an impact on businesses in downtown san francisco. the owner of osha thai market says business has dropped since 50% since the bridge closed

wednesday night. another downtown business owner says his flower shop has also been affected by the bridge closure, but he says he doesn't mind. >> it's an inconvenience. but, you know, considering what's happening, what they are doing, it's an historic thing. >> in contrast, the bar at one market restaurant was full for happy hour last night. a manager says the restaurant's location next to a bart station makes all the difference. some other business owners say labor day weekend is traditionally slow for businesses. new this morning, one man has died after a shooting at an oakland nightclub. it happened around 1:30 at club anton on third street and jack london square. when police arrived, they say they found a young man dead at the scene. he had been shot at least once. witnesses say there may have been another victim who fled during the commotion. >> there was some type of physical altercation. unknown if it was with our victim or other people. then gunfire erupted. >> police are interviewing

witnesses, but hope surveillance video will give them clues about what happened and who the gunman may be. because the lighting was so poor, it could be hard to get reliable details from witnesses about the shooting. so far, no arrests have been made. police are investigating what could be a human body part found on a berkeley beach. officers made the discovery yesterday afternoon at east shore regional park. the suspected body part has not been identified, but police say it was found with discarded clothes. they also have not said whether they suspect foul play. a 14-year-old boy is in custody, accused of sexually assaulting a young girl inside an elementary school bathroom. police say it happened yesterday, just before 4:00 p.m. at ruby bridges elementary school in alameda. police say the teen was seen running from a rest room and was caught a short distance away. the victim was transported to the hospital. police are calling this an isolated incident. a group of people fighting to save a historic post office in downtown berkeley plan to hold a news conference today. protesters say they will

discuss wednesday's raid by berkeley police before holding a rally in front of the post office on allston way. organizers also say police confiscated their possessions while they were attending a separate demonstration in oakland. police say they collected what appeared to be abandoned property. president obama paid tribute to america's workers in his weekly address. >> this labor day weekend, as we gather with family and friends, we'll also come together as a nation to honor some of our own. the working men and women of america, who across the generations built this country up and helped make us who we are today. >> the president says labor day is a reminder that many americans have seen their wages stagnate, while corporate profits soar. the president also called on congress to make ending poverty its highest priority. . mostly sunny and 66 degrees in san jose at this hour. what a beautiful start to your morning. as i mentioned a little earlier, san jose climbed to about 88 yesterday.

today, i think you'll get to about 80 degrees. we do have a cooling trend under way. now, with that said, still going to be quite warm, especially for inland communities, but not as warm as we were on friday. i put on a time lapse here of two hours, so you can see the low clouds beginning to erode back along the coastline. i do think they will remain for most of the day. beginning to clear outside and around the bay area, we've got mostly clear skies for inland communities right now. winds onshore through fairfield, slightly stronger than yesterday. i am beginning to see just signs of a slight cooldown through the afternoon. i think the seabreeze is going to kick up. that will offset the heat for the afternoon and temperatures will, again, come in lower than yesterday. this is the responsible party, the onshore breeze, as well as the marine layer will thicken through today, into tomorrow, and your labor day monday. cooler temperatures in the forecast. now, the ridge of high pressure that brought us that heat is going to begin to weaken and will not have as much of an effect on us. but it will continue to send

62 degrees outside your doors. . well, riverside county, cleaning up this morning from a storm that stranded people in their cars. one driver actually forced to swim to safety after getting stuck in the flood waters. 10,000 people lost power. forecasters say an inch and a half of rain fell in just over an hour. two homes also are suffering significant damage from water and mud. this morning, the white house says it has, quote, high confidence the syrian government is responsible for a chemical weapons attack near damascus. u.s. officials say human and satellite intelligence supports videos and other evidence collected after the attack. according to a u.s. intelligence report, the attack killed more than 1400 people, including 426 children. u.n. weapons inspectors left syria overnight, as president obama considers launching a military strike overseer yeah's use of chemical weapons. the u.n. inspection team has been gathering evidence from the chemical attack near damascus. it could be one week before its

final report of the analysis is released to the u.n. security council. if president obama does order military action, he will have little international support. only france has spoken out in favor of a strike. >> claims that proof exists, but is classified and cannot be presented to anybody are below criticism. this is plain disrespect for their partners. [ foreign language ] >> this morning, russian president vladimir putin has been sharply critical of the united states. syrian officials say they expect, though, an attack at any time. right now, at least four u.s. warships are in the mediterranean sea. in san francisco, protesters plan a rally against potential u.s. strike today. protesters say the military strike lacks international support and the u.s. cannot afford to be involved in another war in the middle east. in sacramento, lawmakers approved several bills for

consideration in the upcoming session. among the bills facing votes include legislation that would raise the state's minimum wage. lawmakers are also going to consider bills that would law undocumented immigrants to get driver's license. a bill that would require the highway patrol to inspect limos every year will also come up for a full vote in the legislature. a state assembly committee has approved the bill. it would also require them to carry fire extinguishers after the limo fire on the san mateo bridge that killed five people. a bill for internet safety is headed to the governor's desk. it would allow minors to remove photographs and postings from social media websites. the bill would also ban websites from marketing alcohol and tobacco to minors, or from selling minors personal information to advertisers. a bill allowing nurse practitioners to perform abortions for women in the first trimester has also been

approved, allowing sirte fight nurse midwifes and certified physicians to perform the procedures, making . opponents argue only doctors should be able to perform the procedure. new details this morning on the double homicide in punol. flores is in a martinez jail this morning, being held on $2 million bail. police say around 2:30 a.m. yesterday, flores called authorities to the home on terra hills drive. when police arrived, they say flores opened the door and told them the residents inside had been injured. police then found the bodies of a man and woman. both are relatives of flores. neighbors say the two had been living in the home for more than 40 years. >> it's kind of been falling apart over there. people parking on lawns and whatnot. it doesn't quite fit this kind of a peaceful neighborhood. >> authorities are not releasing names of the victims, but a relative identified them

as 76-year-old nona flores and her 54-year-old son tony flores. these are the first homicides in punol in two years. two shootings happened yesterday morning in san jose in a span of four hours. one incident ended with the arrest of 18-year-old raymond cardenas, accused of robbing a safeway yesterday morning. police say he was armed with what looked like a real gun, so officers fired at him. cardenas was not hit. police say he surrendered. a few hours earlier, police shot and injured another armed robbery suspect after he pinned an officer against a fence with a car. the officer was not seriously hurt. that incident happened on wilshire boulevard and king road at about 1:00 a.m. >> i came out and noticed the guy was across the street and he was screaming, help me, help me, i've been shot. he says i'm dying, i'm dying! >> police say the incident started when two men robbed a

woman at gunpoint and they led police on a chase. that ended with the crash. the officer was pinned as the suspects tried to drive away. police said the second suspect ran off and they are still looking for him. well, san francisco officials are debating whether or not to build a new jail. sheriff ross mirkarimi requested approval for a state grant for a new $290 million jail in the city south market neighborhood. mirkarimi says the current jail is not seismically safe. the city attorney opposes the plan, saying the city should reduce the inmate population. ross mirkarimi says he may run for sheriff again. the san francisco chronicle reports he has not made a formal announcement, but says he sees no reason why he wouldn't run for re-election as sheriff. mirkarimi's comments come after he fought to keep his job after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment for bruising his wife's arm during an argument. well, bob filner is officially no longer the mayor

of san diego. filner's recent ignition took effect at 5:00 last night. right now, the city president todd gloria is acting as interim mayor. filner stepped down after less than nine months in office, after nearly two dozen women accused him of sexual harrasment. he is being investigated for allegedly using a city credit card for unofficial purposes and for strong arming local developers. the nfl football season officially begins after this labor day weekend, but a battle taking place off the field might make it hard for some fans to see those favorite teams kicking off. >> a cooldown in the forecast for your saturday afternoon. at this hour, temperatures are beginning to warm. i'll have a look at what is happening outside your door and what you can expect for the afternoon, coming up. unbelievable.

. it is a race against time. this is a live picture from atop the new eastern span, looking at the old span. more on what needs be done this morning and later today. welcome back to mornings on 2, everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. 90 minutes ago, cal trans gave us a briefing on the construction. alex savidge is live in emeryville this morning, with more on what the officials had to say. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. the work has been constant ever since the bay bridge was closed on wednesday night, as crews work around the clock, trying to prepare the new eastern span

of the bay bridge and all of the roads leading up to it. that's a big part of the project as we'll. we'll push in across the water from our location in emeryville. one of the main focuses over the last couple of days has been the area in and around the toll plaza. they are having to do a lot of paving work in that area to get things ready for drivers. want to show you also a short time ago, one of our photographers was taken on a driving tour this morning of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. final touches are being done there on the bridge, and cal trans believes everything at this point is on track for the planned opening tuesday at 5:00 in the morning. meantime, crews are demolishing a large portion of the old bay bridge. cranes and jackhammers are being used to dismantle a 11,000-foot 1000-foot span, making room for a bike and pedestrian path in a couple of

years. demolition work is challenging in many ways. >> it's pretty complicated, because we have to control the access, supply proper safety equipment and monitor, and then cut each beam out at a time. it's pretty complex. >> reporter: now, crews, a lot of what they are doing is fairly routine, paving and painting lines. overnight, workers finished an area east of the toll plaza and now, of course, they are working their way west, toward the new span, again, paving and striping work. all of that is expected to be finished, according to cal trans, within the next 24 hours or so. a spokesman for cal trans was asked at this morning's briefing about the possibility of opening the new bay bridge early. he said it's possible, but he would still like the public to plan on the new bridge opening, again, scheduled time on tuesday, 5:00 in the morning.

live this morning in emeryville, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. well, cal trans is taking advantage of the eastern span closure to also do some maintenance work on the western span of the bridge. crews are doing everything from painting and picking up litter, to paving and replacing lights. engineers are also doing inspections on the bridge. cal trans says being able to get so much work done in such a short period of time is a luxury. >> we can accomplish as much as we normally do in three to four months. so this is a great savings for the taxpayers, for us. it's safer. >> crews say they plan to remove all the lights in the tunnel and replace them with led lights. the 61st annual sausalito arts festival has arrived. it is a waterfront event that features fine art, music, food and wine. this weekend, more than 260 artists from around the world will be there to display their work. organizers are expecting large crowds all weekend, even with

the bay bridge closure. in fact, they say the last time the bay bridge was closed during the festival, they saw record-setting numbers. >> the first time the bridge closed, we thought, oh, my goodness, what's going to happen? we had record attendance that weekend. >> the gates open at 9:00 and will stay open until 6:00 p.m. proceeds from the event will go towards the student scholarships and grants. in just the past 10 years, the festival has donated more than $500,000 to the community. one bay area city has made the top five list for selling the most expensive gas. san francisco comes in at number 5, with the current average price of gas at $3.92. anchorage alaska at 3.94. bridgeport, connecticut at 3.95. santa barbara, 3.94. honolulu, 4 h. $23 to top the list. if you're hitting the road over the holiday weekend, aaa predicts 3.9 million people in california will drive 50 miles or more over the next few days.

that's up 6% compared to last year. nationally, more than 34 million people are expected to drive to their destination. that is up about 4% compared to last year. the summer crackdown on drivers on dui is coming to an end. arrests are down from 142 arrests in the same time period last year. dui arrests were down in santa clara counties. salinas police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another man injured. it happened yesterday morning on williams road. 38-year-old jose ruiz died at the hospital. a 21-year-old man was treated for his injuries, then released. the surviving victim told police he was in a parking lot with ruiz when two men walked up and asked if they were in a gang. when they said they were not gang members, one of the men

shot them. investigators looking into the cause of a massive fire in yosemite say the fire may have been started by marijuana growers. investigators have not formally announced the cause of the fire, but told a community meeting they suspect an illegal marijuana growing operation appears to have been the spark for that fire. investigators also say they are positive the fire was started by people, and not by lightning. and this is not the first time an illegal marijuana growing operation has been blamed for a devastating wildfire. a 2009 fire that burned 90,000 acres in the los padres national forest was the result of a camp fire at an illegal marijuana grow. deputies found 30,000 marijuana plants and an ak-47 assault rifle right next to where the fire started. the forest service says tighter security at the border has resulted in more drug cartels growing marijuana on public lands in california. and firefighters are making progress fighting the rim fire in and around yosemite national

park. that fire is now 35% contained. full containment is expected by september 20th. the fire has burned more than 213,000 acres since it broke out two weeks ago. some evacuation orders have been lifted. and smoke from the rim fire is causing health concerns in the sierra and san joaquin valley. alerts have been issued for san joaquin, stanislaus, merced, madera, fresno and tulare counties. people who see and smell smoke are asked to stay inside. the smoke is especially a concern for people with heart or lung problems, the elderly, and small children. san francisco firefighters are returning home after fighting the rim fire for nine days. a 22-member team volunteered to protect the area. san francisco sent a separate four-person engine crew that is continuing to fight the fire. the city of venetia is getting an early jump on halloween. the san francisco chronicle

88 schools in the denver area don't have air conditioning. parents seem to be taking those closures in stride, saying, look, if school has 'to be canceled for snow it, can also be canceled for hot weather. this morning, investigators are trying to determine why a house in east los angeles suddenly collapsed. neighbors say they heard a strange noise, then watched in shock, as the house crumbled last night. search and rescue dogs were brought in, but they did not find anyone inside. police say the house had been abandoned for several years, although some homeless people had recently been broken in. workers at oakland national airport are back at work today, just one day after going on strike. >> we are the people! >> about 200 workers participated in yesterday's one- day strike. the workers have been in contract negotiations for the past year. they are demanding better pay and benefits, and they are also fighting to stop a hike in monthly health care costs. >> we're paying zero for health care and our company wants us, if you're single, to pay over $300. if you're a family, over $600.

burglaries from alameda county to the peninsula. police are warning residents to beware of strangers claiming to be with animal control, searching for loose snakes. plus, a deadly overnight shooting at an oakland nightclub, happening around 1:30 this morning at club anton on third street in jack london square. police found a young man dead at the scene. no arrests have been made. in bakersfield, an elementary school principal is accused of murdering her husband. 46-year-old leslie chance was taken into custody on thursday night. the body of her husband was found four days earlier in a field. police believe chance and her husband left their home together last weekend and drove to a dirt road. a woman reports seeing a woman walk away from that car and then the body was found shortly after. chance is due in court on tuesday. a san jose woman is in the hospital after being critically injured in a house fire. it started around 8:30 yesterday morning on commodore drive, near the state park.

firefighters found a 70-year- old woman trapped in a back bedroom. she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. the woman's son was also taken to the hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation. he is expected to recover. today, supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg will become the first justice from the high court to officiate a same-sex wedding. she will repride over the wedding of kennedy center president michael kaiser and government economist john roberts. kyeser kaiser is a long-time friend of ginsburg. it is gay pride weekend in oakland. the festivities kicked off last night at the fox theater. the main celebration is set for tomorrow in the uptown neighborhood on franklin street, between 17th and 22nd streets. dozens of artists are performing on four stages, including the r & b group, en vogue. there will be a wedding pavillion where people can get married. it is oakland's biggest pride

. stingray injuries are on the rise at several beaches in orange county. this month, officials say there have been around 450 injuries. that number is five times higher than the number reported in august of last year. lifeguards are now asking swimmers and surfers to be more cautious of the stealthy animal. most stingray victims describe getting injured as a very unpleasant and painful surprise. >> there is a certain amount of denial that goes into it that, you know. >> stingray injuries can result in trauma, swelling and muscle cramps. sea life experts recommend moving your feet around to stir

up the bottom of the water. they say it will help scare off any stingrays nearby. a mussel-sniffing dog will be inspecting boats this labor day weekend. we want to show you popeye. that guy will be at lake sonoma, inspecting for mussels. the tiny mussels are in festing waterways and easily transferred. nationwide, they cause more than $500 million in damage. once they are part of the waterway, the mussels quickly reproduce and destroy natural habitats and fisheries. popeye will try to prevent that by randomly inspecting boats through monday. bacon lovers across the u.s. are celebrating national bacon day. well, according to food critics, the bacon craze has reached a peak sizzle in the last 10 years. americans across the nation have gone as far as dedicating festivals to the salty treat and extreme bacon fanatics have
