less than two days before the reopening of the bay bridge. crews tell us they are still on track to make that deadline. >> >> crews on the new bay bridge are still working around the clock to make tuesday's opening happening. taking a live look at the plaza where as you can see the work continues. >> reporter: you can see crews out there. we have christian, woe is live, now. he was just updated by officials on the progress out there. he is here to tell us what they had to say. >> reporter: really, no more than 15 seconds ago, i spoke with the bay bridge spokesperson. take a look, look at some of the work ongoing, a great deal of activity on the western end as well. at this point, cal-tran said they are on track for the 5:00 am tuesday morning opening, but a lot of the major work has been done a spokesman -- bridge spokesman said if it came down to it, traffic could pass over

the bridge as it now stands. that was said with the caveat that a lot of the safety equipment is not in place. all demolition work, they are saying, has been completed, necessary to get them up and running, crews focused on striping. word is 90% of the striping has been done. weather now becoming a factor. cal-tran is saying even if inclement weather moves in, they believe they could finish by the 5:00 am tuesday deadline. despite unexpected hiccups along the way. >> >> reporter: coming back to our live shot, you can see some of the work is that ongoing. we have a crew taking a tour of the construction site.

jade her maundies will have the very latest details coming up at 10:00. at -- up canning up, i'll have new details about vehicles that are set to cross the bridge thatnd automobile. all of that coming up later this afternoon noon. the big word is that everything at this point appears to be on time. 90% of the striping done here on the eastern side and all of the major demolition work needed to open the span has been completed. live at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> christian, we heard andrew mention a little slow down in some of the aspects, but are you getting a sense they may be ahead of schedule and there is a chance the bridge will open before tuesday at 5:00 am.? >> reporter: that was the point that i pressed andrew on. i said 15 sessions before we came to air, i was pressing him on that exact matter and he stands by the fact. he believes it is too early to say. with the weather being a factor. they don't know if the weather could slow down some of the striping.

they are playing it rather conservatively. most of the demolition work again, done, a lot of the major work out of the way. the hope, of course is that the bridge could open early, but at this point, they are sticking by their guns saying they will aim for the tuesday morning 5:00 am opening. >> all right, thank you, christian. >> >> more details on the bridge closure and its effect on bay area traffic. one of the problems continues to be interstate 80 an emeryville. you are looking live, three westbound lanes that funnel drivers to the bridge is blocked off. that's the reason for most of the backup in the bridge closure, including today. >> bart records almost 279,000 trips yesterday, that saturday is surpassed only by october 6th, 2012, with 319,000 trips. that was a particularly busy saturday around the bay area for good reason. they are a music festival,

6:30. this morning, oakland mayor kwan spoke to a group gathered at the 1st annual pride breakfast. telling them how such events may shape the world -- >> i thank you for coming. >> reporter: breakfast organizers said they created the event to honor those in the lbgt community >> a shooting before 11:00 p.m. on daisy street a few blocks from the mills college campus. when officers arrived, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. he was a 48-year-old from oakland. investigators say the victim got into a physical altercation with the gunman before he was killed. >> >> a shooting last night in

east palo alto left two men hospitalized. 18 and 19.  their injuries are not life- threatening. a preliminary investigation found two gunman walked up and fired as many as 30 rounds in the house. shooters fled on foot and were possibly picked up by a dark sedan. anyone with information is asked to call the police. >> >> continues coverage on the crieses in syria, secretary of state john kerry made the rounds on the sunday political talk shows a day after president obama said he will seek congressional approval for a military strike in syria. kerry said the evidence is clear that chemical weapons were used in syria, killing more than 1,000 civilians, including 400 children. authorization from congress may not be enough for the united nations which urges the u.s. and all world leaders to use restraint. as katie murray explains, u.n.

small boat. one was lowering a crab pot when his leg got tangled. he pulled over the edge of the boat and was unable to free himself. the other man called 9-1-1, but divers were not able to save his friend. the victim's name has not been released. >> >> a suspected arsonist behind bars thanks to a trio. ken pitch art has more on him and how he was caught. >> reporter: these men were deron williams hunting when they saw smoke from one small fire. then, a second fire and a third and then, they say they spotted someone trying to set a fourth. cal fire helicopter and ground crews able to make quick work of the fires and they may have these hunters to thank. >> we were deron williams hunting, seeing smoke and i asked my buddy "i didn't hear no dry lightening." >> reporter: the hunters saw

three small fires through bin knock ulars. >> we saw a guy and a dog. he grabbed a pile of brush and started another fire. >> we saw him start starting a fourth fire. he said the man with a dog said he was doing a controlled burn. >> we asked him what he was doing out here. >> he was -- didn't really have a clear story. remorseful. wanted us to let him go and we told him "we can't." >> hunter was driving this blue pickup. >> one of the fires grew to 20- acres yesterday afternoon off dutcher creek road. crime scene tape marks where witnesses saw someone throwing flairs into the brush as for the hunters, they say they were lucky, not just for the capture, but to make it out.

they say they were surrounded by fire. >> there is a lot of cabins out here. it could have hurt other people. >> reporter: the man tried to run, but the hunters held him until sheriffs arrived. the sheriff's department said there was another suspicious fire behind his house and they found a backpack with his personal information inside. >> >> police are investigating a shooting at a block party in antioch last night that wounded a man that happened before 7:00 last night on sycamore drive. a group of people hanging out behind apartments when a car seen speeding through a nearby ali began to fire. the 25-year-old man that was hit was taken to the hospital for treatment. but he was later released. no arrests have been made. >> >> in sonoma county, police say they were called to the state park friday about a park visitor that didn't return that

circulation up here and basically have it drawing in moisture from the south. that will be the source of the cloud cover for tonight and into tomorrow morning. as far as shower chances, forecast models just updated throughout the day, overnight, tonight, 10:00 or 11:00. partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies for tonight and then we'll take this into tomorrow morning. at 7:00, this is not a widespread event, but as you can see here, a chance of a light shower, basically anywhere. parts of the east bay, approaching the north bay. the bay bridge dry. close enough to warrant a slight chance of a shower tomorrow morning. 6:00 and 8:00, then into the afternoon hours, scale back on the cloud cover, partly cloudy skies, some clouds focused on the south bay. >> >> by 12:00, sun cloud mix. 60-65. temperatures could be a little cooler in some spots.

>> reporter: first, let's get to the fact that we have another crew out on the span right now. we should have some new pictures coming in of the bike and pedestrian path. i spoke with a cal-tran spokesperson. the path should open noon on tuesday, it will only take people as far as the suspension tower. they will have to wait until 2015 to make it all the way to treasure island. this road to the bridge has a decidedly leisurely feel. cal-tran unveiled the bike and pet halfway leading to the bay bridge today. >> tuesday at noon, they will be able to access it and take it past the tour of the suspension bridge. >> it will be open from dawn to dusk. ones full span opens 2015, you

can expect great views, similar to the golden gate, pedestrians and cyclists can expect to be unscrutiny themselves. >> there is a security system on the bridge. that's information i can't get into >> cyclists have discovered the bay bridge trail and are taking it as far as they can. >> instead of taking bart, you can get on your bikes and go over. >> reporter: pedestrians like this man said they -p can't wait to explore on foot. >> i have never taken a chance to actually pull off the freeway to visit treasure island. now that i can actually walk my dog there, i'm going to explore every nook and cranny of it -p. >> reporter: cal-tran is looking into the feasibility of adding a pedestrian and cycling path to the western span of the bridge. no word on when they may become a reality. live in oakland at the bay bridge toll plaza. ktvu channel "2 news." >> more details on the

demolition of the old bay bridge. cal-tran estimates it will take three years to take apart the old structure. it's an old bridge, so engineers say it is complex. it will be deacon instructed. we are told engineers took all of the old hand made drawings blueprints and construction documents from when the bridge was constructed and fed it all into a state-of-the-art computer modeling system to help engineers in the demolition. alex savage tells us the troll became a beloved part of the old span and he asked where it will go now. >> reporter: the troll sculpted out of iron after the 1989 earthquake. an oakland artist created it, iron workers doing repair work to the bridge installed it without permission.

a superstitious creation meant to ward off future disasters. >> a good luck charm to keep the bridge safe. >> reporter: a senior curator at the coke land museum of california where a new exhibit of the bay bridge feature as replica of the troll. >> i think it has become a part of san francisco that people have learned about it. >> reporter: now with the old eastern span set to become history, there is say lot of debate about what should happen to this important piece of art that had been attached to its side. >> much as it magically appeared, he magically disappeared. his whereabouts are unknown at the moment, we might have some information soon as to when and where he will be reappearing. >> reporter: transporttation officials have not announced what is next for the famous troll, some museumgoers we talked it to feel strongly it should be a part of the new eastern span. >> to apiece the superstitious
