afternoon. and this morning temperatures are up by a few degrees in most cases. 68 in fairfield. mid 60s in napa. 65, 67 san jose. but here's hoping you don't have to be any where this early this morning. the afternoon highs, 81 for santa rosa. if you're going to see the a's play, it should be a nice day. mid 80s in livermore as well as antioch. these numbers a little cool for this time of year. we'll get back to the warm up. i'll show you that in the extended forecast. in the future cast model. a few sprinkles this morning. more on that coming up. good morning. we have a crash in san jose right near the san jose airport and one person was killed. this happened about an hour ago. the fire department sent heavy rescue to the scene and they had to cut one person out. we do know one person has been killed. another may have been injured

in this crash. it happened an hour ago. it looks like they ran to into a pole. it was first reported as a head on collision. janine is on the scene gathering more details. we'll find out more about this coming up. let's move along and take a look at interstate 888. and traffic has been moving pretty well. but it's crowded in the alternate routes because of the bay bridge closure. the bridge is still closed for at least one more day. it looks like it might open tomorrow at about this time. but we're going to find out from tara in a moment what's going on with that. i want to go to the maps to remind you about the closure. traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area and the closure. and cal train and muni are doing pretty well carrying people throughout the closure. 4:31 let's go back to the desk. the bridge scheduled to open. crews have been working around

the clock since wednesday night's closure. in oakland at cal trans construction headquarters where crews are expected to give an update on the construction. >> reporter: they said they would open by 5:00 tomorrow morning. but with everything running smoothly there's a chance they could open early. officials told us yesterday they're not quite at the point where they could make that decision. the s curve is gone. the approach to the tunnel is smooth and straight. and inside, in led lights and fresh paint. a thousand feet of the old bridge is done to make way for the new bike path. cal trans so far has really had no surprises. >> there's a mixture of fatigue and exhilaration. and i'm not sure anyone has really had a chance yet to kind of stop and think back on kind of everything that they've been through. >> reporter: today crews are moving barriers and wrapping up

ridership for a saturday. special trains for a's and cal fans put the number of saturday riders to 279,000. last thursday was the third busiest day with 475,000 riders and friday was the fourth busiest. the gold gate feiry system reported high ridership over the weekend. over 8300 people road golden gate feiries. more than 900 took feiries on saturday. 3200 more than last saturday. bart is running on a saturday schedule. golden gate transit in the s alsalito feiries will run on a holiday schedule. happening today port workers are scheduled to hold a news conference on lack of progress. negotiations are not scheduled to resume until september

17th. five weeks after a 60 day cooling off period was ordered. attorneys for two unions accused bart of violating the terms of a court order. bart says the offer made on august 10th is the final offer and deserves a vote. also happening today, occupy groups plan to hold a labor day protest in san francisco. a news conference is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at justin herman plaza. it will be followed by a general assembly at 3:00. and a march to the federal reserve building on market street. there's a 10,000-dollar reward being offered for information about a deadly shooting in oakland. a man was killed saturday night outside an apartment complex on daisy street. a few blocks from the mills college campus. he went to meet a friend. he got into an argument with another man outside the building and was shot. he died at the hospital. police don't have any information about the suspect. the rim fire burning in and around yosemite national park is the fourth largest fire in

california's history. the fire has burned 224,000 acres since it started on august 17th. it's 45 percent contained could burn for a few more weeks before it's knocked down. 4500 homes are still threatened. >> we went, but i don't want to lose our place. because it's beautiful there. it's our life. >> firefighters are investigating if the fire was started by an illegal marijuana growing operation. they're growing on public lands because it's harder to smuggle drugs across the border. smoke from the rim fire taken from a southwest airlines flight. a ktvu viewer took this photo friday at an altitude of 32,000 feet. the pilot received permission to fly over the fire so

passengers could see the massive smoke plume. many tuolumne businesses are thanking firefighters with meals and donations. signs have gone up praising the 5100 firefighters and police helping fight the wildfire. several veteran firefighters say they have never been treated as warmly as they have in tuolumne county. hunters catch a suspected arsonist in the act, why they say his story just didn't add up. the this morning president obama invited john mccain to the white house to try to get his support for military strike in syria. after the president announced that he would seek congressional approval before an air strike. members of congress returned to washington for a briefing. after words reactions were mixed. >> the briefing confirmed the unclassified material. there was an attack by the

same sex weddings were performed at the wedding pavilion. many say they're basking in the glow of the supreme court decision that legalized same sex marriage in california. >> it feels good to make that decision if we want to make it. >> 50,000 people turned out for the pride festival in oakland. a possible festival in randall island was shut down early after two concert goers died from apparent drug overdoses. the festival was scheduled to go to sunday. after using the drug molly. a syracuse grad and a 20-year- old student from the university of new hampshire died. >> i think people are getting more hooked on it because of the effects. >> i was surprised to hear that somebody got a bad batch or something happened bad. you don't hear about people dying off that kind of stuff. >> four more attendees are being treated for apparent

overdoses. event organizers posted a statement online sending their deepest condolences. fire crews are battling flames at a food warehouse in new jersey. a fire started at 1:00 yesterday afternoon. fire officials say the flames appear to have started on the roof. they say the solar panels on top of the 260,000 square foot building are forcing crews to attack the flames from the ground. >> normal roof, we'd be able to get on there, trench it, cut it off at a certain point. with the power sitting on the roof, my building's not worth one of my guy's lives. >> they're relying on help of local fire companies to keep the flames contained. the cause of the fire is unknown. and no one has been hurt. deer hunters caught an arsonist in the act.

he was arrested yesterday afternoon after hunters saw him start fires. they called 911 when his story did not add up. >> he was erratic. didn't have a clear story. just remorseful. wanted us to let him go. and we told him, you know, we can't. >> he's also expected of setting a fire saturday that burned 21-acres and a fire behind his cloverdale home. a witness saw a man throw flairs from a car that's registered to him. we received pictures from the hunters who caught the suspected arsonists. you can see the size of the flames there. and the suspected arsonist lying in the ground. firefighters say yesterday's fire burned approximately one acre before it was knocked down. time now is 4:45. airport screeners across the country are stopping for travelers trying to carry weapons on to planes. salt lake city has seen a big

jump with 30 passengers stopped from taking guns on planes. more than twice as many as other airports with similar numbers of travelers. screeners found 660 in 2005. they discovered more than twice that many last year. and they're on pace to hit a new record this year. 1150 gun haves been discovered through last saturday. 20 percent more than found between january and august of last year. a t-shirt that makes fun of the national security agency is reappearing after a brief absence the shirts are available on the cafe press.com website. there's the nsa logo and peeping while you're sleeping. the shirts first showed up on redwood city base zazle. but the company removed them after a cease and desist ordinary. cutting the price of iphones. wal-mart, best buy, and radioshack are offering deals

friday august 16th to midnight on saturday august 31st, 272 people were arrested for driving under the influence. dui arrest will continue through midnight tonight. time is 4:47. let's go to sal. is it busy out there on this labor day? what are you seeing? >> for the most part it's not busy. we have one problem in san jose. this happened on first street. this is a fatal crash. and now we're hearing that two people were killed in this crash. and the person responsible reportedly ran away. we'll have more details on this. this happened at 3:20. or was reported at 3:20. and ktvu janine is on the scene gets more details on this very serious crash in san jose. it's on first street near center -- it's on first street here. and i want to get the correct cross street.

century center court right there at that intersection. let's move along and take a look at other commutes. traffic is moving well in both directions on 880 and 92. the bay bridge obviously still closed but the other bridges are doing well. this morning's commute on public transportation, off to a good start. 4:48. >> we're off to a good start weather wise as well. we will have a mix of sun and clouds for labor day. temperatures running below the seasonal average. and we'll continue that as we get into the rest of at least the first half of the business week. a slight chance for shower is coming our way. contributing to the below average temperatures. so the two combined bringing us the possibility of maybe a few brief showers for your afternoon. let me run you through. picking it up this morning. all that cloud cover there.

as i roll through the day we're moving into the afternoon and evening hours. sunsetting at 7:40 these days. no rain on the screen here. but very moist air in place for today. so again leaving a possibility of a few sprinkles and you can see a few showers here over the hills just east of san jose perhaps near mount hamilton. right around there. that's about it at the moment. the winds on shore remain 22 miles per hour. we'll keep this on shore breeze and through the afternoon we'll have the sea breeze for san francisco and just inside the bay. temperatures mild this morning. mid 60s in oakland. 61 for san francisco. upper 50s. santa rosa. low 60s half-moon bay. 66 outside in mountain view. afternoon highs for today, a lot like yesterday, a tad cooler in some spots but we're splitting hairs at this point.

a look where she's recorded her website that's tracking her. she left havana before 1:00 saturday afternoon and has been swimming non-stop. her team says she put on some type of protective gear during the evening when the jelly fish are more likely to sting. this is her fifth and she says final attempt to make the swim. time now is 4:51. coming up, some believe it's protected the old bay bridge for 25 years what might happen to a famous troll when the new bridge is set to open. 49er fans could face a new expense before they even walk into the new stadium in santa clara.

. over the weekend doctors gave the panda its first check up. doctors tested its weight, temperature, and size. they say it's in good physical condition. and that it may be a female. the doctors do say it's difficult to tell the sex of a panda until a year after its born. an eight-year-old boys dreams have come true after swimming with a dolphin. he had to have his legs amputated after he contracted meningitis. after watching dolphin tale, he

says he felt an instant connection. some local tourism officials then flew him from his home in england to florida. the troll is a metal figure created by an oakland blacksmith. it measures 18 inches. workers installed it on the old bay bridge without permission. but it was meant to be a good luck charm to ward off disasters after the earthquake. >> i think it's become a san francisco and oakland story about themselves as folklore that people have learned about it, followed it. >> a replica of the troll is featured in a new exhibit at the oakland museum of california. the actual troll has been taken down but bridge officials have say it may come out of hiding soon. the troll is rumored to be part of today's ceremony marking the completion of the bridge. the oakland museum in california also has a display

of bridge photographs. taken by peter stagpole. he was one of the first photographers hired. he took black and white photos of the workers and the structures. they'll be ob display at the museum through january 26th. the cost of game day at the 49ers stadium is continuing to rise. according to the san jose mercury news parking at the new stadium could range from 40 to $50 per car. right now drivers pay between 30 and $35 to park at candle stick. and cal train is in talks with the vta and the 49ers to determine the level of service it will provide on game day. well this may be a holiday for most people. but that makes it a workday for car thieves. the national insurance crime bureau says nearly 2,000 cars were stolen on labor day in 2011. that's one every 43 seconds. progressive insurance says not everyone notices if their call is stolen during a long holiday weekend. one of the busiest days of the
