delay 7:00. good morning. you are looking live at the new eastern span of the bay bridge getting its first real workout this morning. we have team coverage all morning, showing you all angles of this bridge in this commute. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm brian flores. dave sclark off today. beautiful weather out there. rosemary's in for steve. >> with patchy fog around the bay area, we can see the bridge. if you plan to cross the bridge today, you should have a nice view. we do have partly cloudy skies and patchy fog along the eastern shore line, piled up on the coastline, some of it pushing in across the golden gate bridge and patchy fog reported over parts of the north bay this morning. outside of that, mostly cloudy skies and beautiful weather. we have a drier air mass moving
7:02 am
into place for today because of this. temperatures are down by a few degrees in some cases. by 6 cletion in areas like napa. 56 for you. 51 in santa rosa. 60s around the bay. a bit of a chill in the air for some of us. in most cases we're off to a good start. the onshore breeze will be with us. i'm seeing it through fairfield at 14 miles an hour. you will be able to enjoy that breeze. mid-60s along the coastline. downtown san francisco, 60s. along the shore line, 60s. as we get inland, some of the temperatures will warm in the 80s. i will have a detailed look at these afternoon highs and in the extended forecast, a big heatup coming our way. an exciting day for a lot of people but it's also coming with slow traffic. let's go take a look at the bay
7:03 am
bridge. these are live pictures from newschopper and you can see on the bridge itself, it does look good. the chp is out there with extra enforcement on that span today to make sure that you don't go too fast. there is a delay getting on the span, it's been pretty big. these are beautiful pictures. we have a not so beautiful shot of the toll plaza. it extends on 80 on the east shore freeway and all the way back to the lakeshore area. it has been a big backup. i think a lot of people want to be on the bridge the very first commute day. as we look at the south bay, this commute has been pretty normal. not that many crashes. there's been a little bit of roadwork. highway 101 right through near, the traffic on 101 and 280 are off to a big boort.
7:06 am
7:06. welcome back to "mornings on 2." it has been years in the making and finally this morning, drivers are driving across the new eastern span of the bay bridge. >> that's right. we have team coverage this morning of the first commute on the new eastern span. but first let's head out to pam cook who has been at the bay bridge toll plaza since 4:30 this morning. she's used to it, though.
7:07 am
how's it going out there, pam? >> reporter: it's fun to be out here. very exciting. we got here at 4:00 this morning to watch the -- the changing. we went from the evening time to the light. now the sun is up. people are getting that pretty view of the bay and the new span. it's more crowded. drivers seem to be in pretty good spirits. they are waving saying good morning as they are sitting waiting for the pete metering lights. but they are also excited about getting the drive across the new span. we've been talking about more commuters than usual probably out here because of the new span, more people heading eastbound as well. i'm definitely noticing quite a few cars heading eastbound into oakland. what a gorgeous view. the chp does have a warning for drivers. we just spoke to a chp officer at 6:30 who said no big problems to report this morning.
7:08 am
but they are patrolling. they are looking for speeders. they are looking for people who would be slowing down. do not slow down to take a picture. the speed limit is 50 miles an hour when it opens up. the good news, the bridge open several hours ahead of schedule, just after 10:00 last night. some drivers we watched waited in line for hours to be among the first. many of those did slow down to take pictures with their phones. despite the warnings from the chp, just so you know, stopping on the bridge, not just dangerous, it's illegal unless there is an emergency. now, the other exciting thing we're doing, we have all of us out here for the first morning commute. tara moriarty is up at yerba buena island. you have a great view. does it seem to be getting crowded? >> reporter: a little bit.
7:09 am
you can hear the cars. it's a beautiful sight. one driver said it's like driving through a cathedral. i know what he means, the cable stretches so high and they appear to part for you as you drive through. you can see the traffic flowing nicely and you can see the old bridge next to it with nobody on it. after 1 years of -- after 11 years of construction the new eastern span is finally open. [ cheers ] >> reporter: gavin newsom cut the ceremonial chain. traffic was allowed on the bridge at 10:15 last night. the world's largest self- anchored suspension bridge went way over budget and was decades overdue but most politicses it focused on the fact it became before the earthquake. some drivers waited hours to be the first to cross. >> it's an iconic structure.
7:10 am
it's first in my lifetime, i get to watch it being built. i've always been fascinated by all of the bridges. just to be able to be one of the first to cross, it's just a memorable moment for me. >> the bridge was replaced because a section of the eastern span collapsed during the 1989 loma prieta quake. it cost $6.5 billion to make, four times the original estimate. state senator mark leno says, the senate is going to review how it happened and how it can be prevented in the future. coming up we'll tell you why the bridge has side by side decks. live from yerba buena island. pam, back to you. >> reporter: we're talking to drivers this morning. again, i mentioned, they are sitting right here where we are past the toll plaza before the metering lights. they are bumper to bumper. most of them are waving and saying hello. seem to be waiting pretty patiently because they do get
7:11 am
to be among the first to drive along the span. we talked to the drivers who are making this first commute and we want to share some reactions with you. >> it's great. i'm an engineer. i thought it was great. >> i actually filmed it on my phone. >> reporter: now, filming it on your known, don't do that unless you have some kind of properly dash-mounted camera or phone -- holder for your phone. don't do that. chp warning. don't pull over to the side. the officer we spoke to a half- hour ago had a really good recommendation, take the bike path or the pedestrian path, it will open at noon today. you went out and took some photos and said it's a great view if you want to get some pictures, that's the way to do it. the other thing we're doing, pretty exciting. alex savidge is crossing the
7:12 am
bridge driving the bridge. he's driving. we have a photographer out there cruising around in a convertible. i'm curious. they've redone the tunnel. it's light and bright. did you notice any difference in there? >> reporter: yeah. we've come through it a couple of times already this morning, pam. here we go. this is a live picture. this the westbound traffic coming towards you on your tv screen. they just came through the tunnel on yerba buena island. the the tunnel is -- the tunnel is much cleaner. you want to be aware of this especially if you are driving at night. check out the view. i think no matter what angle you are looking at this new bridge from it's always gorgeous. we are a coming eastbound. there's that huge tower, the 525-foot tower that's the anchor for this bridge.
7:13 am
the world's longest. a lot of people soaking this up this morning. the traffic very thick as we came through the toll plaza. a lot of people it seemed wanted to be part -- audio difficulties] >> reporter: maybe some people thought this is a good way to drive the bridge. look at that view. we'll show you the traffic coming westbound. as you come up, traffic tends to slow down right as you get toward the tower. it slowed down about 15, 10 miles an hour in a couple of spots. i think that maybe it's just meal's natural reaction -- people's natural's reaction. you get close. you want to soak it in. i talked to one of the toll takers, he was working last night. a lot of people lined up to be among the first to drive among
7:14 am
the span. i had a chance to speak with him. he said it was an exciting night an historic night. he said some of the people coming through actually wanted his autograph and they -- and he actually signed some of their receipts and took pictures of people. listen to this gentleman. >> i think this is the happiest moment in my life, man, just for tonight. before i don't think people appreciate. but last night i see a lot of people appreciate it. they say, thank you, you guys open early. i said oh. thank you. >> reporter: people probably have never been so happy to pay you their money. >> that's correct. [laughter] >> reporter: yeah. he says this is the one day that people showed up cash in hand and they were more than happy to pay that toll. weerson the right-hand side you have the old eastern span of
7:15 am
the bay bridge. part of it has been demolished. the section here has been demolished to make way for the bick and pedestrian -- bike and the pedestrian traffic. you will have an unobstructed view as you drive through here. a nice drive this morning. beautiful views. for now, live on the eastern span of the bay bridge. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> reporter: i'm a little jealous of alex, cruising around in the convertible. about nine months of the year, most of the cantilever will come down and then the views
7:16 am
will get better. people are taking in this first morning commute. i'm live at the toll plaza, let's go back to brian. >> all right. thank you, pam. 7:30. and for the latest updates on the bridge, we've set up live cameras and drive times for you. go to ktvu.com and click on the bay bridge. new this morning, firefighters in marin county are investigating a fire in george lucas's famed skywalker ranch. the fire started at about three hours ago. firefighters say it started in an attic and it took about an hour to put the fire out. no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. oakland police are searching for suspects in two shootings. the first shooting happened around 4:00 yesterday afternoon on fruitvale avenue. police say two people were shot. another person was shot about
