bay, 75, 80. the warmest locations in the afternoon, a lot of sunshine, 82, 87 degrees. these numbers forecast highs about the same as yesterday. no major changes. some patchy fog this morning. clearing back to near the shoreline. pacifica, 65. san francisco, 69. a lot of 70s. the warmest locations inland on track to reach the mid-80s. we have a warmup coming up around the corner. we'll have your forecast and your five-day in a few minutes. sal has an update. >> good morning, mark. right now we're looking pretty good. today the commute is about the same as it was yesterday at the toll plaza. although there seems to been a empty spot which is encouraging. it could mean we're going to get lighter earlier. certainly better than what we had yesterday. tara is going to talk about -- well, what it was like yesterday. some of it wasn't pretty. she will have a report coming up. this is westbound 92 as you head out to the high rise. the traffic is moving well. in case you want to avoid the bay bridge for the next few

days as the newness wears off. contra costa, highway 4, slow in the construction zone, slow through baypoint. traffic -- transit, i should say, b.a.r.t., just checked in with them, caltrain and muni, reporting no delays. back to the desk. thank you, sal. we're following breaking news in san leandro. the body of a second victim has just been found inside a trailer that caught fire early this morning. it all happened at a trailer park on grand avenue near 580. ktvu's claudine wong is there live with the late-breaking details. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. firefighters giving us this update in the last few minutes. all morning long neighbors tell us a couple lived in the trailer you see there. they knew a woman was inside because they heard her calling

out. they said they didn't know where the man was. they said his car was parked outside. it was a bit of a mystery. firefighters going through the debris, made this discovery just a short time ago and talked to us about this latest update. >> there's one occupant in the structure, we've now been able to confirm a second occupant was in there, located underneath a large debris of material. >> reporter: let's tell you how this started -- about 3:30 this morning, neighbors tell us they saw smoke and fire coming from the trailer and they did everything they could, they said, to try to get the person and now we know the people inside out. they broke windows. they tried to open doors. they said really when they saw the fire initially, they didn't think it was that bad. one man describes how quickly the fire changed. you thought you could save her? >> i thought i could save her,

yeah. >> reporter: when did you realize that you couldn't get in there? >> when i got the door open. there was no open -- like i said, the air coming in the door, i think, made it burst into flames. the window -- there was somebody hitting on the windows, opening windows. i don't know what the right procedure is for -- if we should open the windows or not open the windows. >> reporter: and firefighters when we talked to them this morning said there's nothing necessarily they said would be right to do when you know someone is trapped inside. they certainly don't fault neighbors for doing what they could to try to get to the people inside. you are looking live look at what's left of the trailer. from what we're being told, there was a lot of debris inside. neighbors ran into trouble when they were trying to open the door and get through the windows because there was a lot built up in there. now, firefighters say some of that did fall on that second victim. while they were going through that, that's when they made the

discovery. the coroner is expected out here soon. investigators are still taking a look at what happened in there. still trying to figure out what started this fire. live here in san leandro, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. 7:05. it's another busy commute on the new bay bridge. ktvu channel 2 reporter, tara moriarty, is live with the big backups drivers are seeing and what may be to blame. tara, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the metering lights went on a little after 6:00. it's backed you. we're sort of timing it here. you can see the congestion. there was a truck at the west grand overcrossing it took him ten minutes to get to the toll plaza in the fast lane. a lot of traffic here. that's nothing new. but what is new, yesterday, the traffic never let up. dozens of drivers were taking cell phone video as they went through there. the chp was issuing plenty of

warnings for distracted driving. motorists experienced congestion all way. many came out of town to gawk at the bridge. the chp says after the long holiday weekend, we saw a lot of cars because it was the first day back to school, back to work. in san francisco, at about 5:30 last night, drivers were trying to get onto the bridge. the ramps were extremely backed up. drivers grew frustrated saying the congestion lasted all the way past market street. keep in mind, the new bridge has the same number of lanes as the old one, the speed limit, still 50 miles an hour. the only difference, the street and the view. we'll stay out here and monitor the traffic for you and continue to give you updates. right now we're gonna check in with sal castanedo and see how traffic is looking. i don't know if you have a better view of the bridge. >> we'll take it from here.

the bridge does not have emergency call boxes. but officials say they didn't have time to install those call boxes for the labor day opening but plans are in the works to add them. a bay area man wants to build a house using recycleled parts from the bridge. the entrepreneur created bay bridgehouse.org after learning most of the scrap will be sent to china. he wants to use some of it for a house. demolition contractors say they will not give him the materials, calling it a liability issue. he may have to appeal to the recycler. go to ktvu.com for more bridge coverage including a link to uneditting video. it's at the top of our page.

7:08. ariel castro was found dead hanging in his cell last night, just weeks after pleading guilty to holding three women captive in his home for three years. last month, he was sentenced to life in prison for a thousand years, for raping michelle knight, gina dejesus and amanda berry. two weeks ago, the jury found joseph naso guilty of killing four women. some of the murders date back to the '70s. he's also a suspect in a fifth murder in nevada county. during the penalty phase, prosecutors plan to introduce evidence that link him to a sixth kill, he could receive life in prison for the death penalty. underaged drinking has led to four more incidents in dorms. there were nine alcohol-related incidents last weekend as students moved back into the

dorm. berkeley police have plain clothes officers focused on keying an eye out for underaged drinking and businesses who sell alcohol to minors. police are investigating two incidents of indecent exposure. the daily cool reports a man exposing himself in the halls. the suspect is about 5'10" and was last seen wearing a white shirt and green pants. anyone with information is asked to call campus police. we're following a developing story near houston, texas. at least three people were stabbed at a high school. this happened about two hours ago. one person has died. the attack reportedly occurred in the school cafeteria. a news camera filmed two men being taken away in handcuffs. it's unclear if they were arrested in connection with the stabbing. the school is underlockdown.

this is happening -- under lockdown. this is happening in spring, texas. police are not commenting about what happened but say the parents of the children involved have been notified. a new poll shows one out of ten high school juniors in contra costa county say they feel unsafe at school. according to kidsdy ta.org, more than 19% of juniors in the antioch school district say they feel unsafe, in west contra costa county schools. 18% in pittsburg and 9% in the contra costa unified school district. the majority of california voters, especially parents, strongly support standardized testing. 66% of parents polled said students should be tested in each grade level to track their performance. 43% of voters say teachers should be evaluated based on their students' test results. classroom performance and peer evaluations and 80% of parents

7:14. al qaeda's leadership has groups of engineers trying to find ways to shoot down or remotely hijack u.s. drones. this is according to "the washington post." the newspaper says it obtained details of al qaeda's attempts to fight back against. drone campaign from classified documents provided by edward snowden. reportedly, al qaeda engineers are trying to jep jammers to interfere with the gps signals. happening now, president obama says the credibility of the international community is on the line. if it does not respond to the use of chemical weapons by syria's government. president obama is continuing his push for military action against syria during a visit today. kyla campbell has more. >> reporter: president obama defended his use of the phrase

"crossing the red line." he also said international leaders need to look beyond the short-term issues of responding to syria. >> our long-term national security will be impacted in a profound way and our humanity is impacted in a profound way. >> reporter: president obama went on to say it's not possible for syrian's president to regain legitimacy. he said he's killed tens of thousands of his own people, only more recently with chemical weapons. he will head to the g-20 summit tomorrow. the topic is supposed to be the world economy but syria will be on the topic. right now, they are debating military action. if the senate foreign relations committee approves using force, they will vote next week and the foreign house affairs committee gets their chance to question john kerry chuck hagel and martin dempcy. i'm working on that story for

governor for approval. the chp says the drifntsers must have their transporders attached to the stickers because of the lanes around 237, 680 and 880 don't have cameras to report license plates of potential offenders. if you use them only to cross bridge, you don't have to mount these. let's check in with sal. how are things going on highway 4? >> it's a little bit slow on highway 4. as a matter of fact, westbound highway 4 through the construction zone and then again as you come in through the baypoint area. you are going to see some slow traffic. it's not, you know, something that you are not used to seeing but certainly it is no walk in the park getting out of

concord. the toll plaza is backed up for a 25-minute delay. yesterday it took some people a long time to get on the bridge. i think as the new newschopper2 wears off, we'll see commutes improve in the area. let's go to the south bay now and talk about the commute here on southbound and northbound 280. northbound 280, northbound 101, i should say, 280 is pretty slow as you drive through the area. i just want to point it out, especially as you drive downtown and get all the way up into the valley. you will see slow traffic. if you are driving to the santa cruz mountains or through the santa cruz mountains. most of that commute is good when you get down to the valley in los gatos you will see traffic in northbound 17. let's go to mark. i will step out of the way and show you some patchy fog regrouping. it's not completely overcast out there. but some patches, also some clear pockets as well. a nice start for your wednesday morning. forecast headlines for today, the patchy fog, mild to warm.

not a big change from yesterday. tonight, partly cloudy skies. fog for the coast increasing and then this weekend temperatures increase and then we're talking about more 90s. right now on the maps you can see at least some scattered low clouds out there, nothing too -- it's not blanketing the entire area. it's out there moving around the bay. current temperatures off to a cold start. we've been tracking patchy fog up in the north bay. napa reporting visibility down to one quarter of a mile. santa rosa cooling off to 48 degrees and san jose checking in 60. in fact, san jose, the forecast for today, this morning at 8:00, 64 degrees. by 12:00, 72. an afternoon high on track to reach 80 degrees. this area of low pressure not moving today or tomorrow. at a result, we're -- as a result we're not gonna change the forecast. we'll have mostly sunny skies, some left over patchy fog near the coastline. this is a developing change friday and into the weekend.

high pressure returns. as a result, everybody warms up. inland neighborhoods, around the bay, even the beaches. hottest locations back up in the 90s. with this pattern, fire danger is on the increase. always a concern in september or october. temperatures, 50s and 60s on track to reach the 60s in the green contour. 70s around the bay. warmest locations inland. we're thinking mid-80s. forecast highs around 3:00 this afternoon. stinson beach, 82. right around the bay, you can see a lot of 70s for oakland, san leandro and hayward. head over to the hills, you will find 80s for danville, livermore and brentwood. san jose, 80. fremont in the upper 70s at 78 and san francisco some patchy overcast this morning. it's not completely overcast, a forecast high in the upper 60s. look ahead to your five-day forecast. it will repeat the forecast for

-- 242 to 24. you can see a lot of red on the maps. 24 gets better after la fayette. as you drive on westbound 80 between hercules and richmond, it's slowing down to berkeley. the bay bridge toll plaza, that's about a 25-minute delay. it's unusual some of the lanes have been empty there for a bit. but still a big delay -- i would say 25, 30 minutes before you make it on the span. no problems once you make it onto that span. san jose we showed you this on the road sensors. we're just looking at a live picture of the same slow traffic from 280 getting up to 13th. 7:33. let's go back to the desk. a battle over parking between people who live in neighborhoods bordering palo alto and east palo alto has caught the attention of city leaders. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from palo alto where tensions have been rising over this. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning.

i've lost count of the number of people i've seen crossing that bridge from east palo alto into palo alto. at least maybe about, you know, three dozen so far. and they are actually walking here several blocks down the street and around the corner so that they can park their car here in a neighborhood overnight. and that is just not sitting well with people who live here. now, there are numerous parking restrictions on woodland road in east palo alto, making it difficult for residents who live in apartment complexes in east atm. the mayor found one property owner illegally painted curbs red reducing spaces. residents have complained it's led to an increase in noise and trash it's correcting. that prompted a one-year ban to be approved in the crescent park neighborhood of palo alto. >> the problem, there's not enough space for parking. i have to park, you know, over

here because a couple of times the police put the ticket on my car. >> reporter: the east palo alto city council discussed the issue last night and is working on a plan to alleviate the congested area. they are going to follow up with the property owners of the different condominium and apartment complexes about accountability and adding additional parking. some has already been approved by the planning commission. but the mayor issued a letter to palo alto's mayor apologizing for any problem residents may have created. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:35. another hate-related incident at uc berkeley. the third in four weeks. a swastika was scratched on a door at the clark kerr campus. a police crime alert said the vandalism happened sunday morning inside building 7. last week, homophobic remarks were found on a flier in a restroom

in building 3. on august 4, there was a racial epithet on a classroom chalkboard in we willer hall. firefighters are investigating the fire on the grounds of an elementary school. a fire burned a trailer at james bunker school where a tear cakierive willed. that caretaker was not hurt. three dogs and two ferrets had to be rescued. san jose has become the scene of a death investigation. this was early yesterday afternoon. the school is on east san antonio near south king road. police are not calling this a murder but the homicide unit is investigating. officers say all of the children at the elementary school are safe. 7:36. an emotional plea and a late- night vote. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with the conflicting opinions over a homeless camp

in albany. good morning, pam. >> good morning. the area is called the bulb. it has sweeping waterfront views. there's a big fight over who can live there. after nearly an hour and a half of emotional pleas, the city of albany voted to evict the people living along the water. there are 60 people living in the camp that looks more like a pretty elaborate town with structures there. many people are not happy about it, saying the homeless have taken over a public park. the community says they have nowhere else to go. >> i think we should be able to stay until they come up with some housing. albany has no low-income housing. >> for those people homeless truly, those people, they need to be reintegrated into society. not to be isolated out there away from everybody and away from services. >> after the hearing, the council approved the request to have albany police begin evicting people in the bold

community sighting the no camping ordinance. they are working to help find affordable housing in the area. the evictions are set to begin in october. but the representative of the east shore parks group tells us here at ktvu news that albany will have a heart and take a soft approach to help the people who need a permanent place to live. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:37. there's growing concern over san francisco's decades old street light system. the lights keep going out and some say they take too long to be repaired. according to records, about 6,000 of the city's approximately 45,000 street lights burn out each other. that's an average of 16 per day. many people who live in san francisco say darkened streets create safety problems. >> for someone who is an elder as i am, and takes walks, it feels dangerous. >> it takes way too long to

those those lights when they burn out. we're trying to get a more reliable system. >> supervisor scott wiener expects to hold a hearing about the outages with pg&e and the public utilities commissions in about a month into bikists and runner -- about a month. bicyclists and runners are out enjoying the new back path. there's more anticipation for them than the cars. several riders yesterday morning hoping to get on it. this is the first day it's open to the public. >> i'm a fourth-generation san franciscan. it really important for me -- it was really important for me to be out here for my family. i recently lost my grandmother recently. san francisco is a big step closer to getting some new bike

lanes. the municipal transportation agency approved a plan to add new bike lanes along polk street. it includes a landscaped median separating the bike lanes from cars and trucks. muni says the goal is to make polk street safer for everyone. a new bill approved by lawmakers in sacramento would ban teenaged drivers from texting while driving even if they use voice-activated texting programs. teens are already banned from talking on cell phones while driving even if using hands- free devices. the bill is now on its way to governor brown's desk for his signature. san jose has approved a plan to boost police officers' wages and add new officers. the problem, the city doesn't have the money or the support from the officers' union. the city council voted 10-1 last night to back a plain from mayor reed and one councilman. it would raise city worker pay

10% and add 141 officers over four years. the union sgpoa disagrees. >> this is an attempt to showboat for the mayor's race. there's nothing in the plan that would retain a san jose police officer. >> i suspect if i or the mayor came up with a way to cure cancer, it would be opposed. >> the city is millions of dollars short. san jose police are making changes to a controversial policy some say led to racial profiling. at issue is a tactic called limited detention or curb sitting. that's when officers handcuff possible suspects or make them sit on a curb or in a police car. now officers must fully report any time they do that. the new policy comes in response to many complaints. >> mostly from communities of color who believe that they

were being stopped and made to do things that whites were not being made to do. >> it will paint an accurate picture of how the limited intee tension is used -- detention is used. >> the police auditor is pushing to hold officers accountable by having them wear video cameras. 7:41. important news for greek yogurt lovers. why one company is pulling some of its products off the shelves. there's someone firing a shot gun. >> frantic 911 calls in union city. what witnesses say happened just moments before a man was shot and killed by police. good morning. right now, traffic is doing better but in some areas we're still pretty slow. for example, getting into san francisco. and in weather some minor changes to the forecast for today. still some patchy low clouds for this morning. coming up -- the timing of our next warming trend and when fire danger could be on the increase.

convicted ohio kidnapper ariel castro is dead in an apparent suicide. his death comes weeks after pleading guilty to holding three women captive in his cleveland home for three years. we're more. >> reporter: good morning. it was just only last month when ariel castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years. last time he was found hanged in his prison cell. now, officials at the correctional reception center in ohio found castro hanging in his cell at about 9:20 p.m.

guards tried to resuscitate him. he was pronounced dead an hour later. in a statement, the coroner's office in franklin county confirmed it was a suicide. he died of hanging using a bed sheed. he had not been with the general prison population. he had been housed by himself in protective custody with checks every 30 minutes. today his attorney told cnn they requested an opportunity for their independent forensic psychiatrist to evaluate castro. but those requests were denied. castro was sentenced for the kidnapping, raping and holding of the three women. castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts in exchange for not being held for the death penalty. really interesting this morning, tori, too, castro's brother-in-law responded to the news of his death. he said it was very sad but his first thoughts are with the victims and he hopes this is

7:48. we now know the name of a man shot and killed by police in union city this past weekend. he has been identified as 46- year-old virgeil warrell of union city. police say he was shooting randomly near homes saturday afternoon. they just released several 911 calls from people who saw him. >> we're on kennetta way. someone firing a shot gun. >> it's a handgun. we just drove by. he almost hit us. >> police say warrell was screaming profanities. officers tried to calm him down. but when he pointed a gun at officers, they shot him. investigators are still trying to determine a motive for his behavior. 7:49. obviously all eyes are on the bay bridge this morning. traffic moving right along. how is it looking? >> it looks okay. we're looking at the new picture of the heat span that's gonna be the normal picture that we always look at here.

it looks pretty good driving into san francisco with no major delays. as a matter of fact, what's on the bridge, it's a nice drive. it seems better than it was yesterday. as we look at the toll plaza, i can see as far as the foot of the macarthur maze. it's about a 20, 25-minute delay. it looks better than yesterday. but certainly, still crowded. if you are driving contra costa 680 traffic is heavy and toll. on 80 it's backed up just west of highway 4 driving in richmond. let's go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. we're taking a live look outside toward the bay bridge. it's not a one-word forecast or even a "now" forecast with the clear skies up above. some patchy fog out there. we have the fog being a factor at least near the coast and around the bay. it's not widespread overcast. forecast headlines, patchy fog for the morning comu. mild to warm this afternoon. tonight, partly sunny skies, some coastal overcast. this weekend, a warming trend.

we're talking about 90s inland. on the maps you can see some of the fog on the map. visibility is down to one quarter of a mile in napa. mountain view, 61. fairfield, currently checking in at 61 degrees as well. for san jose, the forecast for today, starting out with 64 degrees and then by 12:00, 72. a lot of sunshine this afternoon. we're forecasting 80 degrees. this area of low pressure not moving too much for today and tomorrow. as a result, we're not gonna change the forecast much as well. we're partly to mostly sunny skies this afternoon. some patchy low clouds. beginning friday and into the weekend, high pressure returns. with that a lot of sunshine. inland neighborhoods on track to reach the mid- to upper 90s. with with this offshore flow developing, it will be weak. fire danger is on the increase beginning friday into the weekend. forecast highs this afternoon, not a big change from yesterday. we're showing you a lot of 80s

out towards santa rosa, vacaville and fairfield. sausalito, 73 degrees. right around the bay, 70s for oakland and hayward and over the hills, you will find some 80s for antioch and brentwood. san jose, a forecast high of 80. fremont in the upper 70s and san francisco go with 69 degrees match, the temperature from yesterday. here's a look ahead to your five-day forecast. basically the same deal for your thursday and then we warm things up. and by the weekend it will be warm to hot. warmest locations inland mid- to upper 90s. well,chobani is pulling some yogurts from the shelf after hearing complaints about texture and tasting like wine. it may come from a type of mold commonly found. this is not a recall. they are not saying what kind of

good morning, everybody. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm brian flores in for dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. let's begin with a quick look at weather and traffic. mark tamayo is in for steve. pretty nice out there? >> yeah, pretty nice. a few plineor changes. right now, you can see higher clouds morning into southern california. not much. but then a band of high clouds approaching bum holt county. we just have some scattered low clouds floating around the bay. but a lot of -- right now napa, back up to 57 degrees. we've recovered the 8:00 observations all right. san jose, 64. walnut creek at 60. 50s and 60s on track to reach the 60s for the beaches. a lot of 70s, that yellow contour. warmest locations around 85, 86. we'll break down your forecast beginning at 9:00. some patchy fog out there.

by 12:00 still some coastal fog. 50 to 65. by 4:00, warming up 63 to 8 a. these numbers not a big change from yesterday. san jose, a forecast high of 80. oakland mid-70s. santa rosa, 84. i'm tracking more 90s on the weather maps. more on that coming up. sal has an update on the commute right now. good morning. we'ring looking at the commute at the bay bridge getting slow, slower. you can see it's slow around the macarthur maze. it's not all that bad. sometimes we've seen the traffic come all the way around. it's about a 30-minute delay, a little better than it was yesterday. again, hopefully the newness of the bridge will wear off and people will start to drive. i know it's a much-better looking one than the last one. no disrespect intended. this is 580 westbound, the

traffic slow all the way into dublin. then when you get to kos troe valley, you will -- castro valley, you will see slow traffic as well especially at 880. a lot of people are back. the traffic patterns have been changing. if you are taking public transportation, b.a.r.t., caltrain and muni are doing well. back to the desk. we continue to follow developing news from san leandro this morning where two people have been found dead inside a trailer that caught fire early this morning. it happened on the 1400 block of grand avenue near 580. ktvu's claudine wong has been out there since 4:30 and joins us to tell us why it took so long to find the second victim. claudine? >> reporter: there's apparently a lot of debris inside that trailer. let me give you a look at it behind me. there was a lot of debris not only in the trailer but also on top of the victim. that's why it took so long to make that discovery. they didn't find the victim until some of this was cleared out.

in the last 30 minutes, the coroner arrived and preparations are yuped way to get the body -- are underway to get the bodies out. neighbors describe this trailer as a trap and. despite rescue attempts, it was a trap that two people inside couldn't escape. >> i did everything i could do. >> reporter: it all happened at around 3:30 this morning. neighbors say at first, they didn't think the fire was that big. they thought they could get the woman inside out and they say there could hear her inside. >> i tell her, are you okay? she said no, i'm not! no i'm not! so my son came out, neighbors came out. we were breaking the windows. >> the door swings inwards and it was locked. i took a crowbar and hit the door, porked a bunch of holes in it, reached in and grabbed the handle and opened the door that way. >> reporter: firefighters say the oxygen that came in from

the broken windows fed the fire and it just took off. when they arrived, they say the trailer was engulfed in fire. it took them just minutes to get the fire out. they found one victim almost immediately. but the other victim was found hours later. only after they started to remove debris from inside. >> looked like shelfing materials fell down on the second person, the second occupant was trapped in a corner area under a large pile of debris. >> reporter: it's still unclear how long this investigation will take. authorities have not identified the victims but say neighbors tell us a couple has lived in that trailer in that spot for years. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:04. we're tracking the commute crunch often the new bay bridge. sal just showed us the backup. it's about 30 minutes at toll plaza. a little better than yesterday. ktvu channel 2 reporter tam is

live near the toll plaza. what are -- tash raw is live near the toll plaza -- tash raw is live near the -- tara is live near the toll plaza. what are they saying? >> reporter: yesterday, i know a lot of people were speaking with our reporters. let's just say there's some things we can't repeat on air. if you look behind me, you can see it's gridlocked. the backup extends to the macarthur maze right now. it's not anything really new but what is unusual is the trafficker inner let up whether it was 11:00 in the morning or 9:30 at night. dozens of drivers were taking cell phone video as they went through the cables under the new tower. the chp was issuing plenty of warnings. many folks were slowing down to shoot video to post on youtube. many people came out from out of town to gawk at the bridge. the chp says after a long holiday weekend. we saw a lot of cars because it was the first day back to school, first day back to work. in san francisco, at about 5:30 last night, drivers were trying

to get onto the bridge, the onramp, completely backed up. the drivers were growing more frustrated saying the congested all the way past market street. keep in mind, the new bridge has the same number of lanes as the old one. the speed limit, 50 miles an hour. only thing different, the bridge itself and the view. the chp hopes the excitement will wear off in the next few days and traffic will be back to normal. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. and the bridge does not have emergency call boxes on the new span. officials say they didn't have time to install call boxes for the labor day opening but plans are in the box to add them. there are call boxes on the bike path. drivers will not able to access them. a bay area man wants to build a house using recycled parts from the old bridge. the entrepreneur created bay bridgehouse.org after hearing most of the scrap will be sent to china.

he wants to use some of it to create a self-sustaining house and space. demolition contractors say they won't give them the materials calling it a liability issue. he may have to appeal. go to our website. the special section is at the top of our home page. pg&e admits there are flaws within its records regarding its natural gas pipeline. the admission came during a review of company files. that followed the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion which killed eight people in 2010. according to the chronicle, pg&e says an engineer mistakenly reported that the line that ruptured in san bruno was seamless but it was actually riddled with flawed -- with flaws. pg&e is promising to do a

better job of record keeping. there is a sketch of one of two men who has posed as a pg&e worker to break into a home in oakland. police released this sketch of a burglar, an oakland police spokeswoman described how the scam works. >> burglarizing a home while they have the residents or the homeowners in the backyard checking either for easement, it could be power lines, drainage, whatever, excuse they are using. >> the suspects' describe is somewhat vague, a latino man between 35, 40, about 5'6", 180 pounds with short, dark hair. he asked an elderly couple for access to the back of their property to check something out. the homeowners were outside, another man went inside the house and stole jewelry and cash. underaged drinking has led to four more cases of alcohol poisoning at uc berkeley toerms. there wrl nine alcohol-related illnesses last weekend as

students moved back into the dorms. berkeley list are keeping an eye out for underaged drinking as well as businesses that sell to minors. two incidents of indecent exposures happened in campus residence hal. a student said a man exposed himself late monday night. about an hour later, another student reported another incident. the suspect is 5'10" and was last seen wearing a white shirt and green pants. anyone with information is asked to call campus police. we're also following developing news from texas. one person is dead. at least two others have been hurt after a series of stabbings at a high school outside of houston. it's believed all three students involved in this -- all three victims are students. police say the violence began about three hours ago during a fight in the school cafeteria.

two people were seen in handcuffs as well. it's still not clear if they are suspected in the stabbing. a new poll shows almost one out of ten high school juniors say they feel unsafe at school. according to kidsdata.org. more than 19% of juniors in the antioch school district say they feel unsafe. the same percentage of juniors feel unsafe in west contra costa schools. it's about 18% in pittsburg and 19% in the contra costa unified school district. the majority of california voters, especially parents, say they strongly support standardized testing. that's according to a new poll released by pace and usc. 66% say students should be tested in each grade level to track their performance. 43% of voters say teachers should be evaluated based on their students' test result, carl performance and peer

getting busier. this slows down near the coliseum. sometimes it slows down in san -- in san leandro. by the time you get up to the causeway near fifth street, it does look better. in is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, that is parked up. it's beginning to look more and more like the old toll plaza where we're seeing traffic easing up a little bit by this point. but still, it's a 25 to 30- minute delay. once you make it on the bridge, it looks good. we've been looking at the south bay as i push in here. there's a crash at northbound 101 at de la cruz. you can see it on the left side there. northbound 101 between first and de la cruz. 101 is pretty slow as you drive through. as a matter of fact, if you want to use alternate side roads perhaps of you will want to use some of your shortcuts. this whole area here not doing all that well. let's go to mark. good morning, sal. this morning, all morning long

8:24. a mural will be unveiled this morning for an olympic sailor who died while training for the america's cup. andrew simpson belonged to the team artemis racing of sweden. he drowned in may when the boat capsized. 18 students painted the mural which measures 116 feet bide and 50 feet high. 8:25. the america's cup finals begin on saturday. but oracle team usa will start at a disadvantage. an international jury sanctioned them after making modifications to smaller boats used in previous competitions. oracle must win 11 races while

the yerba buena tunnel driving all the way through. eastbound traffic, this is not the commute direction. it's a nice-looking drive on the bridge. the problem, there's a big backup all the way out to the macarthur maze and the metering lights are on. traffic is going to be busy. now if you are driving westbound, give yourself extra patience for the next few days. the let's talk about the maps. up to the south bay here, northbound 101 near 1st street there's a crash still clearing out in this area. it's made traffic worse than it already was. it was already slow. if you are driving in the valley, the minute you get to the valley, you will see slow traffic on 17 all the way to 85 and beyond that. back to the desk. trash and noise. that's what some people in palo alto people say they are finding that's been left by their east palo alto neighbors.

janine de la vega joins us live from palo alto where the conflict has caught the attention of city leaders. >> reporter: one lady said they found a bong in her driveway leftover. we've seen people cross over the brick in east palo alto. and they are walking here into palo alto. some about, you know, three quarters of a mile just to get their cars because they are saying they have to park their cars here because there's no room in their city. we talked to one of the homeowners here down the street who says they've had a car parked in front of their home for more than a week now. there are numerous parking restrictions on woodland road in east palo alto making it difficult for residents who live in the numerous apartment complexes to find parking. east palo alto's mayor found one property owner illegally painted some curbs red, reducing parking spaces and residents in palo alto have complained it's led to an increase in noise and litter

including drug paraphernalia. that's prompted the city to approve a one-year ban of overnight parking in the crescent park neighborhood of palo alto. >> every morning, trash. every morning, cars blocking fire hydrants and very often driveways. and like i said, you know, speeding down the street. >> the east palo alto city council discussed the issue last night and are working on a plan to alleviate the congested area. they are going to follow up with property owners about accountability. and additional parking being added for those condo and apartment complex residents. they've approved parking on three streets. that's in the parks. the mayor of east palo alto has issued an apology to the palo alto neighborhood for any problems caused. and just the homeowners i've talked to, they say they are sympathetic that there's not a lot of parking and that's why

this ban has only been put into effect for for a year in hopes that parking will be created and that they can open everything back up again. reporting live from palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. an emotional plea and a late-night vote. pam cook is in the newsroom with conflicting opinions over whether people can live in albany. what's this all about? >> it's a debate over the bold. over the years, homeless camps have grown and taken over the land. about 60 people have been living in the camp and they marched to protest efforts to kick them out. albany has a new camping ordinance. many people say it's unfair that these people have taken over a public parking making it an unhealthy environment for everyone. supporters say it's illegal and unconstitutional to criminalize someone just because they don't have a house. >> we're not homeless.

we have homes. i've been at the same home for six and a half years. the same spot, the same piece of land, the same address for seven years. i have a home. >> reporter: after nearly an hour and a half of emotional pleas from both sides, the city council voted to evict the people living along the water just behind the golden gate fields racetrack. albany police will begin following that order next month. now, social workers are on some of the cases of the people there and a local church is working with the berkeley housing project to help find how longing in the area. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. 8:35. convicted ohio kidnapper ariel castro is dead in an apparent suicide. castro was found hanging in his cell last night just weeks after pleading guilty to holding three women captive in his cleveland home for ten years. last month, he was sentenced to life in prison, plus a thousand years for kidnapping and raping

amanda berry, michelle knight and gina dejesus. the three member were rescued from his home back in may. happening today -- at the top of the hour, the penalty phase is scheduled to begin in the trial of joseph naso. two weeks ago, a marin county jury found him guilty of killing four women. some of the murders date back to the late 1970s. he's also the suspect in a fifth murder in nevada county. during the penalty phase, prosecutors plan to reveal new evidence that links him to a sixth murder. he could receive life in prison or the death penalty. a preliminary hearing is also scheduled this morning for a woman accused in a deadly hit and run at san francisco's twin peeks neighborhood. the defendant faces numerous charges including gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. prosecutors say she was drunk when she slammed into a group of pedestrians last year. a 56-year-old woman was knocked

down a hill and later died. happening now cyclists and runners are out enjoying the new bay bridge bike path. we want to go to live pictures of the bike path. it's the first morning it's opened to the public. you see a bike rider coming toward the camera right there. swerving right there. they are being joined by skateboarders this morning. we understand skateboarding is not allowed. >> i did not know. i know that skateboarding is usually illegal everywhere we go. so we don't think twice about it. >> now, cyclists can get on the path at the ikea parking lot in emeryville. the path ends at the tower on the bay bridge. 8:37. a former san jose doctor is under arrest on charges of embezzling money that was supposed to go for cancer research. the santa clara county district attorney's office has charged 45-year-old doctor treeman dough. he's accused of

misappropriating $45,000 from medi-cal. arraignment is set. a federal jury found 50- year-old steven tanabi guilty of conspiracy, wire fraud and extortion. he arrested three men who left a bar on dui charges. the court found that he accepted a glock pistol from a private investigator who tried to set the men up in divorce and child custody cases. sentencing is in disease. there's encouraging news about the hetch hetchy reservoir withstanding the rim power. the two power plants that provide electricity to san francisco are back up and running. the powerhouses near yosemite went offline at the height of the firefight. the public utilities commissions add that the water shows no evidence of ash --

evidence. the fire is 86% contained. it's burned almost 370 square miles. that's larger than the city of san diego. while many evacuations were lifted yesterday, there are still 4300 firefighters on scene. the u.s. forest service without going into specifics says investigators have made progress in determining what started the fire. it is speculated it was caused by an illegal pot operation. now that firefighters are making progress, work for erosion can begin. some preparations for winter rain are underway including digging trenches on hillsides to protect water flow but replanting can't begin until the fire is entirely out. that means crews will be at the fire site long after the fire is knocked down. aldon smith is being sued by a man who was shot during a party at smith's home last year. the suit claims smith and others fired guns into the air

and then another group began firing at the house. it was in this chaos that the plaintiff says he was shot. he claims he suffered permanent and serious injuries. smith was also stabbed but not seriously at the party. the regular pro football season is just getting started but a few advertisers are already in for the super bowl. anheuser-busch whose clydesdale ads are some of the most popular have bought ads. dannon says they will be back and gm announcing super early, they are part of the super bowl. a fifth company is expected to announce earlier next week that it has bought ad time. each 30-second ad costs an estimated $4 million. >> is that all? >> yep. it reaches such a big audience. it happened hours ago, a deadly attack at a high school campus. we'll learn more on what led up to the violence. >> reporter: we're live on the

morning inside building 7. last week, homophobic remarks were found on a flier in a restroom in building 3. and a custodian found a racial epithet on a classroom chalkboard in we willer hall. investigators are investigating the fire on the grounds of a newark school at james bunker where a caretaker lived. the caretaker was not hurt. but three dogs and three ferrets had to be rescued and are being check out by a vet. the school was not damage. let's check in with sal on this wednesday morning commute. >> did you say wednesday? >> i did. >> guess what day it is. cleared. you can see traffic is loosening up in this area. also moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, the traffic is still backed up for a 20, 30 minute delay. day by day we'll see more people getting used to the bay bridge and not slowing down much. yesterday it was an unusual day. people were driving through and just being wowed by that bridge. let's take a look at some traffic. lone tree to loverrage 11 minutes. 680 to 24 -- 680, 2 had 2 to 24, 20 minutes. we have some patchy low cloud cover. we've been watching that all morning long. clouds will clear back to the coastline. forecast headlines for today. once again, it will be mild to warm. no big changes to the forecast for today compared to yesterday. tonight, partly cloudy skies. coastal fog. this is the next developing

weather headline. a warming trending. this starts friday and continues into sunday. a lot of clear skies over the golden gate bridge itself. you can see the clear pocket of the -- basically clear skies right now. we do have fog out towards hayward and san leandro. current temperatures are in the 50s to the 60s. we had a cool start up in santa rosa and napa starting out the day in the 40s. right now in the 50s. downtown san francisco, 61. san jose, currently checking in at 64 degrees and partly cloudy skies. this area of low pressure up to the north is not moving too much today or tomorrow. as a result, we're not gonna change the forecast too much. patchy morning fog giving way to mostly sunny skies. into friday and by the weekend, this high pressure returns and that normally flow will kick in.

the warming for. inland, 90s. but with this developing weather pattern, fire danger will be on the increase with the possibility of a fire weather watch being issued. nothing issued just yet. but nothing will be tracking over the next few days. this morning, some of the fog clearing back. more sunshine for the bay. temperatures, as i mentioned, not a big change from yesterday. we're showing you some 80s out towards santa rosa and sonoma. vallejo, 79. vacaville upper 80s. right around the bay, a strong of 70s for berkeley, oakland and hayward. you will find more 80s for danville. these temperatures checking in right about 3:00, 4:00 this afternoon. san jose at 80. fremont in the upper 70s. san francisco, 69 degrees. we'll match the temperature from yesterday. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast. temperatures not a big change for tomorrow. but then we do have some changes by friday with that warming trend kicking in. by the weekend, 70s at the

coast, around the bay, 80s and then mid- to upper 90s. let's get you updated on some of the top stories we're following right now -- we're tracking another busy morning commute on the new bay bridge after a painfully slow drive for many people last night. traffic to get on the bridge backed up into downtown san francisco. tara moriarty has been live at the bay bridge toll plaza since 4:30 this morning. and we'll have a live report in about five minutes. we're also following developing news from texas. one person is dead, at least two others have been hurt after a series of stabbings at a high school outside of houston. it's believed all three victims are students. no word on any arrests. two people have been found dead in san leandro after a fire increased in size. claudine wong has been at the scene for hours, talking to neighbors who tried to save the victims. claudine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still a very active scene out here in san leandro. the coroner's van is still

here. fire is on scene as well are police. two people lost their lives in that trailer after the fire that started there trapped them. there are a couple of details that we've learned that may make the story more tragic. we know that neighbors tried desperately to save the victims. they broke windows. firefighters say that may have actually caused the fire to get even bigger, by fueling it with more oxygen which is what neighbors describe happening. >> the air coming in the door, i think made it burst into flames. le the window -- there was something -- there was something hitting on windows opening windows. i don't know what the right procedure is for -- we should open the windows or not open the windows. >> reporter: all of that happened before firefighters got on scene and when they got here, the trailer was engulfed in fire. neighbors have told us it felt like it took forever for for

firefighters to get here. firefighters say they were here within four minutes of the first call. and they say often what happens in these types of situations is everyone thinks someone else called for help. >> there was a lot of conversation back and forth on who and when someone called 911. i think there's a lot of assumptions being made that someone else called 911 when in reality there was not a 911 notification made. >> reporter: back live here in san leandro. you can see what's left of the trailer. you can see wheafs left of a travel trailer -- what's left of a travel trailer. at this point, still unclear what caused the fire. live in san leandro, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. commuting chaos. we'll have a last look at how things are moving this morning

welcome back. commuting chaos. drivers still getting used to the new bay bridge and that's making for some slow commutes this morning. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is live with what some frustrated drivers are saying this morning. tara? >> reporter: yeah, it's still about a half-hour push to get through the toll plaza. it's backed up past the maze. if we pan to the right, you can

see how gridlocked it is, these cars are inching forward every couple of minutes. this is how it looked all day yesterday. that's pretty unusual. not even to get a break on the bridge even during the offpeak time. joining me live is chp officer williamson. explain that more. do we have a lot of looky-loos and amateur videographers? >> i guess you could call it that. that was a combination of things that slowed down traffic. a lot of people came out to see the new bridge toond use it as a -- and to use it as a normal commute. and some were slowing down. saw several people taking pictures out of their vehicles and that contributed to slowdowns. >> reporter: you will be issuing citations? >> it will be the same policy as we had yesterday pretty much throughout the week. we'll be stopping people for distracted driving. if we see a violation egregious

enough, a citation will be issued. >> reporter: there was a high volume of traffic. do you think that's from the holiday and a lot of people headed back to work and school? >> i think a lot of people anticipated the bridge wouldn't open until tuesday. so they may have delayed their travel one more day to use the bridge to come across. so certainly that contributed as well too high volume. >> reporter: are you hoping the novelty of this beautiful new bridge wears off pretty soon? >> no, i mean -- it's a beautiful bridge. you've seen it. we hope people come out and see it. we ask that they come out and see it, they drive safely. and if they are gonna take pictures, they have their passenger do it and they focus on driving. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. remember the speed limit, still the same, 50 miles an hour. still five lanes. but give yourself extra time to get to where you need to go for the next week or so. right now we're gonna check in with sal castanedo to see how the roadways are looking.

>> let's go out and take a look at the commute on the san francisco side. northbound 1101, that looks good. if you are driving san francisco, the freeways have been looking good not only on 101 but also 280. the giants are away so you don't have to worry about any baseball game today. south of market. moving along and taking a look at the san mateo bridge. that traffic has been good. some people may be diverting off to the san mateo bridge to avoid the first week of the bay bridge just to avoid a lot of that slow traffic. traffic times are still slow in the antioch construction zone. on 680 from 242 to 24 about a 14-minute drive. no major problems. you can see the road sensors are slow. 80 getting better as you drive into richmond. let's go to mark. >> good morning. we've been watching the
