off 880. i want to show you the scene from news chopper 2. it was 4:15 this afternoon. the boy's mother works at a fruit stand you can probably see in the parking lot. this is a parking lot outside of a vacant building. she sells fruit there. her son was playing nearby in the parking lot when a man driving a pickup truck accidentally hit him. that driver remained at the scene after the crash and he's been cooperative with investigators. police say it doesn't appear the driver was going very fast. >> it's a situation where the boy was playing, appears the driver was in the parking lot with his vehicle and at this point it appears that the driver just an unfortunate accident. he ran over the little boy. >> reporter: police couldn't tell us if the driver was

backing up or going forward when he hit the boy. an accident investigation team is out here doing a thorough investigation. i'm told by a spokesperson they will be out here for several more hours. the accident is having a major impact on traffic as we bring you back out here to a live picture. the embark doctoro -- embark dareo is shut down as the police piece together a deadly crash. a boy run over and killed this afternoon. we're live in oakland. ktvu. channel two now's. we're following breaking newses from sunnyvale. police opened fire during an undercover drug operation. a suspect has been injured and we're waiting to hear in the person will survive. it's in front of hobee's

restaurant. robert honda is there and he joins us. >> as we reported during the 5:00 newscast. it's a hectic scene in sunnyvale. the shooting took place in the parking lot of the hobee's restaurant. just before 2:00 p.m. you can see the white truck. the truck is believed to be connected to the person shot. public safety says there was an undercover drug operation here. it was during that drug operation a male suspect was shot. some heard multiple shots. it scared a lot of people but there's no other suspects involved and no further threat to the public. >> nobody else was injured at the restaurant or the surrounding area. we did a canvas of the area, and across the street and in

himself. what did you find out? >> a lot of people think the barriers are too short to keep a bar from hitting it and going over and into the bay. that may be really an optical illusion that was induced by the old bridge. the guardrails on the eastern span may look too short but caltrans say the barriers are tried and true. it was been crash tested again and autin. -- again. it's to redirect them back into the travel way, to keep them from going through and it from striking a blunt end causing a lot of damage to car. bridge users were at ease. >> i think they thought it out. you would have to really get out of hand to go over the edge. i had no more concern than going over the san mateo

bridge. you can see did water. the old span barriers were higher. the old bridge seemed like a cage. there's nothing surrounding you. there's no feeling of security people got from that. i felt very secure. >> if someone is driving in a unsafe fashion, no barrier is safe. >> in europe the press was invited to see a test of the barrier design there. this design was unable to resist a steep angular impact. launched the bus over the barrier and right into the press platform truck. here on the steel suspension span of our bridge there's metallic clones of the concrete ones used on the bridge and they have been tested.

reporting live. >> the bridge officials say traffic is slower on the new span. an early count of how many crossed the bridge yesterday compared to a year ago show fewer. but an increase in traffic during off commute hours. caltrans says the flow of traffic is down likely due to drivers checking out the new bridge. there's a special section devoted to the new bridge under the hot topics on our home page. nancy pelosi is in san francisco and says the u.s. should take action against the syrian government. senate leaders authorized a military strike. >> reporter: today marks the first major approval of president obama push for a military strike against syria.

here's where things stand. a panel voted to give president obama authority to use militaries for in response to a military attack. the senate is expected to vote next week. if approved president obama would order a strike. nancy pelosi supports the president and she made that clear in san francisco today. >> this isn't about going to war, it's about not ignoring the use of chemical weapons with a strategic strike. >> representative pelosi expects lawmakers to engage in a couple weeks of debate and time spent gathering information and forming opinions would not dull the effectiveness of u.s. action. she had this to say about a new poll that says the majority of americans do not support

state's largest wild fires in history. press this button and releases a cable and bucket. >> many members of the air national guard 129th rescue wing were at moffitt field today. they showed how they helped firefighters attack the flames. video from the air attack showed the view. we had two hours of gas. we would try to get the maximum amount of buckets. the buckets it's 460 gallons each drop. only good drop, try to get 15 or 20 buckets. >> they could, when they could see. the smoke, trying to maintain visibility. you can't see anything you could fly into somebody bad. they had to remind themselves they were making progress. with the winds and the foul, the fire kept moving and it was

hard for a guy to get ahold of it. we did a good job. for now they get to take a break or supposed to have time for one. that's what they thought before the rim fire broke out. at moffet field. >> more details on the firefight. the rim fire is 80% contained. it's burned 370 square miles making it the fourth larger wildfire on record in california. 111 structures including 11 home been destroyed since this fire started. as for the cause the u.s. forest service says it's under investigation. a fire chief said it could be sparked by an illegal marijuana grow but the canyon where the fire started does not have the water source that growers look for.

crying for help. my son came out and neighbors came out. we were breaking the windows there and was a little bit of smoke and it went up to a big, big smoke, big fire. >> when firefighters arrived the trail wear -- trailer was engulfed in flames. the victims were trapped by fallen shelves and debris. there is a new tool in preventing homeless encampment. hundreds of goat in continue considered -- concord. >> we're talking about a lot of goats. right now they are in the process of getting them to the other side of the creek bed. high grass was providing cover for large homeless encampment. once they cleared out the camps they brought in the goats to

clear out the weeds. >> it looks like a river of goats. a long walnut creek the waterway. >> never seen some goats. how many you got there. 100, 200. we found ken carter and his grandson off willow pass road. we almost fell off the ke what is this. this is actually part of an effort to clear out a series of homeless camps and keep them from reoccurring. they removed the encampments in july. they had to do it two years ago. now these goats are clearing 90- acres of weeds one bite at a time. it's a pollution problem and just the population of people. better not to live in the channel. >> a long with a flock of sheep
