>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon, i am tori campbell. we begin with the cause of the massive rim fire, still burning near yosemite national park, u.s. forest service investigators say the fire began when a hunter's illegal campfire got out of control. they say that despite rumors to the contrary there is no indication the hunter was involved with illegal marijuana growing and no cultivation sites were found near the oar gin of the fire, the hunter has not been arrest and investigators are not releasing his name. the rim fire has burned more than 2 37,000 acres, it is 80% contained but not expected to be fully contained for a couple of more weeks. san mateo police are investigating a home invasion robbery that erupted into a gun

battle in a quiet neighborhood. police say three suspects barged into a home on lodi avenue around 11:30 last night. there were 4 adults the home, one was a pregnant woman. we spoke to her father-in-law, he says one of the suspects held her at knife point. a few minutes later a gun battle broke out between at least one of the victims and the suspects. police say one of the victims was shot in the shoulder, two of the suspects were also hit. they ran from the house and they drove all the way to a hospital. >> the individuals who arrived at the san jose hospital have now been identified as suspects in this home invasion robbery, one of the suspects was dead on arrival the hospital and the other suspect was suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. >> the third suspect was found and arrested at the hospital. police say the home invasion was not a random act but are not saying why the suspects targeted that home. traffic on the bay bridge

is still pretty busy at this hour, after an earlier accident that caused a long back up. a vehicle hauling a small trailer overturned near the westbound off-ramp to treasure island. it happened just before 10:00 a.m. the chp issued a sig alert because of a visual hazard while they uprighted the trailer, no one was hurt. the new span of the brim causing problems, getting out of san francisco was gridlock for drivers for much of the day, it is not just drivers in cars, bart is also still trying to recover. claudine wong joins us live from oakland to tell us why trains may have fewer cars than usual this week. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, you know bart says a lot of its riders say they want to see the transit system 24-7 like it did during this recent closure but bart said that is not going to happen and this closure gives

working over time to get trains back in service, don't be surprised if your train has fewer cars than normal. >> at the end of the day it shows why we can't operate 24 hours a day. we have less trains than last week and our crews are working extra hard to try to play catch up today. >> so getting these trains back on track, that is the short- term issue but really when you are taking about bart service the long-term issue remains these ongoing labor negotiations and this impending possible bart strike. tom is keeping an eye on that and will have a full report tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. claudine wong, ktvu channel two news. >> bart and its unions are getting set to return to the negotiating table next week, a threatened strike has been put on hold because of a 60 day cooling-off period that ends in a little over a month. officials are pressing the unions to lower the pay raise they are demanding. the president of the bart board is talking to the media now and we will bring you more on his

comments on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. new at noon senator dianne feinstein just stated the evidence is convincing that syria used chemical weapons on its own people and made those comments after coming out of a briefing with intelligence officials. >> based on what i have seen i have no doubt they used nerve agents and at least 11 to 14 prior small incidents and then this larger incident, so i have no doubt that chemical weapons have been used. >> feinstein is chair of the senate intelligence committee and said the evidence she has seep is enough for her to vote in favor of u.s. military action against syria. syria is one of the hot topics as leaders of the world's top economies meet in russia, president obama was among the leaders gathered in st. petersburg for today's session,

even as a number of nations pressured the united states not to act in syria, mr. obama made it clear it is a topic he wants to pursue. >> i also look forward to having an extensive conversation about the situation in syria, and i think our joint recognition is that the use of chemical weapons in syria is not only a tragedy, but also a violation of international law that must be addressed. >> on the economic side a number of nations express concern over u.s. talk of pulling back on its bond buying program, to boost the economy. pope francis urged world leaders to abandon what he called the few few futile pursuit of that.

he wants them to end that and will host a peace vigil in st. peter's square. the inmates at a prison announced they are suspending their hunger strike after two lettingers agreed to hold hearings on this complaints about solary confinement policies, the hunger strike began with 30,000 prisoners and dwindleto several hundred and 40 who refused food and they held a rally there. >> we want to say in no uncertain terms today is a victorious day for them. >> the prisoners concede they did not adheef many of their key demands during the hunger

strike. google is continuing its practice of scanning e-mail so it can sale ads based on that, janine de la vega has this report. >> reporter: good afternoon, google attorneys will be asking a federal judge to throw out a class action lawsuit against the tech giant. it maintains it has a long- standing practice of scanning through g mail users e-mail accounts and doesn't see any reason to stop that. google is are grooving its g mail users should expect their e-mails will be subjected to automated processing and that includes scanning through g mail messages to look for key words, that data is used to figure out the best advertising to display on the user's computer screen, the lawsuit says google is violating california's privacy laws and

at least eight people were hurt after more than 130 cars crashed on a fog shrouded bridge near london, hydraulic cutting equipment was needed to free some of the injured, the crash continued on for 10 minutes as cars and trucks slammed into each other on the new kingsbury bridge, witnesses say visibility was poor and some drivers did not have their lights on. egypt security officials confirmed a car bombing this morning targeted the interior minister's convoy, the minister survived but 22 others were hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out who is responsible. it is the first attack on a

senior government official since former president muhammad morsi was forced from office two months ago. oakland police continue to investigate the tragic death of a two-year-old boy. family members have identified him as raffle bransento, police say he was run over and killed yesterday in a parking lot. his mother was selling fruit at a nearby stand, witnesses say the driver of the pickup truck was a fruit stand customer who never saw the little boy. police say the driver is cooperating with investigators. hayward police are investigating the discovery of a man's body early this morning, a woman reported finding the dead man in the yard of a vacant home at the corner of bee street and 4th around 2:15 this morning. police say it appears the man had been dead for less than 24 hours, the cause of death is still under investigation. officers say the man may have been homeless but say it does not appear he was camping out

in the vacant home. >> he is a black male, late 20s, early 30s, appears to have died at the scene. we are treating it as a suspicious death. >> the hayward police department is asking anyone who might have information on the man to contact them. oakland police are looking for witnesses to hold ups yesterday where someone turned the tables on a group of robbers, shooting and wounding them. according to investigators three men robbed several people near 94th avenue and cherry street, while attempting to rob one last victim someone opened fire on the suspects, at least two were hit, the other took off running, police are still looking for him as well as the person who fired the shots. >> if someone was defending themselves during a crime such as a robbery we certainly would like to talk to them. we certainly would like to hear their side of the story. >> the two wounded suspects are now in the hospital.

police say one is in critical condition, the other is in stable. a school janitor is under arrest, accused of child molestation, santa cruz county sheriff's department says they arrested 47-year-old reuben caribeius for acts that took place 10 years ago in live oak, they say the suspect had been a janitor and bus driver at the school. today marks a somber anniversary for the california highway patrol. it was exactly 1 year o year-old chp officer kenyon young strum died from wounds he suffered a day before. he was pulling over a driver when the suspect opened fire, another officer shot and killed the suspect. young strum had a wife and 4 children. there could soon be more police officers on the streets

started around 2:30 this morning in the vans on south 9th street. the flames spread to a nearby home and apartment complex. officials say people did live in the vans but no one was in either vehicle or a nearby home when the fire started. the fire forced the apartment cool plex to be evacuated and caused 150,000 dollars in damage. some california students might not have to take standardized tests this year, why lawmakers and education officials want them to have a year off. what can i get you?

u.s. stocks advancing today, putting equities on track for a third straight climb to start the month, as a flurry of economic data indicated improving economic conditions. a live look at the big board the dow is up 13, the nasdaq is up 11, s&p up two. among those reports coming out this morning the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time is now at a near a 5 year low. the labor department said this morning the number dropped 9000 last week to a seasonably adjusted 323,000 and near the lowest level since june of 2009. that shows employers are laying off fewer and fewer works, continuing claims fell below 3 million, the government will release the jobless report for all of august tomorrow morning.

california educators say standardized testing known as star tests are outdated. a new proposal to the state legislature and the u.s. department of education would allow most students to skip this year's tests in order to give schools time to prepare for new standards, but california is lagging behind, 45 other states have already adapted the new learning goals called the common core. educators say they are less focused on memorizing facts are instead designed to develop critical thinking and writing skills, state superintendent is sponsoring it and says it is time for reassessments and shifting to the common core and help students might the challenges of a changing world. it is the day fans have been waiting 7 months for, the start of work one, the season kicks off tonight, the ravens are playing the broncos in a
