that. hey steve. >> i was tweeting with alex savidge and asked him what elevation. fire officials tell him it's been moving up toward the summit. so those canyons might make it a little tough. 50s and 10:s at the surface. yet you get up anywhere from 1500 to 3800 feet and it's very, very warm. this is mt. diablo. 77 west at 12. we'll take that over an east winds. that is for sure. humidity very low. fuel just bone dry. and forecasting the area it looks like it will be very hot. it won't take long. we'll go 80 by 8:00 a.m.. it's already 77. and between 9:and 100 later today. let's hope we can hold on to a little bit more of a westerly breeze. 67 near antioch. and brentwood. 65 in livermore. 51 santa rosa. 63 san jose. san francisco 54. it will billion hazy kind of smoky. livermore will be 99 today.
6:02 am
another sizzling day. if you are anywhere by the coast san francisco as well. there is a lot of low clouds in place. there i will only be 68 degrees. forecast today calls for a lot of coast and bay. cool to mild to warm to hot. coast bay fog. it will be warm, hot inland for one more day. there is not much of a sea breeze. 60s to 90s and near 100. steve, we have a traffic scene that is getting a little bit more crowded. we will start off with the toll plaza. that traffic is moving along slowly. they have turned the metering lights on. and the traffic will be busy. as we mentioned. coming up it's backed up to the 880 over crossing. we are hoping for normalization of the bay bridge toll plaza as the newness does wear off. no problems on that deck by the way right now. this is a look at san francisco northbound 101 on the left. you can see traffic moves well approaching the 80 split. we do have a crash in the santa

clara valley. northbound 101 near the expressway. injury crash here. and traffic is not that bad. as a matter of fact i'm looking here at the commute. and you can see the road sensors not really showing a lot of slow traffic yet. but it looks like it's going to start building. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. we begin with developing news from the east bay. a fast moving wild fire continues to burn out of control on the slopes of mt. diablo. and the fire has exploded in size. alex savidge is joining us live from the fire lines with the latest numbers. alex. >> reporter: good morning. yes firefighters are hoping they can get a break with lighter winds and cooler temperatures later on today. that could be the case here. this fire has grown significantly over night. the latest figures we got from cal fire 1500 acres burned. let me give you a live look at what we are seeing. we're on marsh creek road. just outside of clayton. you are looking up toward mt. diablo where this hillsidison f

speaking with a representative from cal fire, he is telling me that parts of this fire have now burned up close to the summit of mt. diablo. that is about 3800 feet. more help is coming to try to contain the flames. i'm told 15 strike teams. cal fire strike teams from around the state will be joining this effort later on today. that means 100 extra firefighters joining in. there have also been throughout the night a number of hand crews that have stayed out here. they tried to create control lines and corral this fire and stop its spread. let me show you the scene from yesterday. this fire is 10% contained. after it broke out at 1:45 yesterday afternoon near morgan territory road. throughout the day, helicopters and air tankers were making drops on this fire. evacuations were ordered for about 100 or so homes. as the homes and ranches were threatened in this area so far the good news no buildings have been lost in this fire. the dry brush in this area and the gusty conditions yesterday
6:05 am
allowed this fire to grow very quickly and later today cal fire will be bringing in a lot of special equipment to navigate what is difficult terrain. >> we are relying on the wild land engines. the shorter bases that have more access into the rugged hillsides. we've got a lot of engines coming in from all over the state. we have bulldozers. hand crews. >> reporter: at this point it's too early to say what started this fire. it could take several days to fully control it. cal fire is setting up a base camp at a park nearby in dublin and by later on today once they get the strike teams out here, there could be more than 400 firefighters involved in this fire fighting effort. the other part of this will be the air attack. that will begin i'm told later on this morning at 8:00. they are bringing in two water dropping helicopters to make drops and two of those air tankers will also make drops on
6:06 am
the leading edge of this fire. the morgan fire still burning. basically out of control. we will go back to you guys in the studio. >> hey alex it's steve. can you hear me? >> reporter: yeah. >> you told me on a tweet i'm very familiar with the area. is it moving up mt. diablo toward the summit in do you know? >> reporter: it is. and so those steep canyons are allowing the flames to burn essentially straight up. so yeah. that is what they are saying. at least this portion of the fire that we are looking at which is the northern edge of this fire. the north western edge of the fire and it's burning right up toward the summit of mt. diablo this morning. and you know, that is not necessarily a bad thing. according to one of the cal fire representatives i was talking with this morning. obviously once it gets to the top there, there is nothing left to burn. >> what about the weather? i know the fire creates its own wind. i've been showing westerly. does that verify what you are
6:07 am
sees there? >> i have to tell you right now the conditions are extremely calm. right now you would be hard pressed to notice a breeze at all. is but cal fire expects the winds to pick up. they are not expecting things to be quite as gusty as what they saw yesterday. >> are the cal fires going to pull any tankers or any of the air drops to fight this fire? >> that is a real good question. i don't know if they are pulling resources away from any of those numerous fires. that is certainly something we will check on with cal fire. >> thank you. nice job. >> as alex mentioned the huge fire on mt. diablo led to mandatory evacuations just before midnight the evacuation order went out to people living on the trail ride road area. a total of 100 homes now evacuated. local homeowners tell us they have seen many wild fires on mt. diablo over the years but

janine. >> reporter: yes. that is right. and firefighters tell me they have this fire contained. although there is still a lot of smoke in this area. this is a neighborhood near 880. the fire is still smoldering. it did effect the power in the neighborhood for some time the electricity is out. but it appears to be back on. now this started at 4:30 this morning a 911 call kale in that a house was in flames. when firefighters arrived they immediately went in to rescue three people who were trapped inside. we were told they were pulled from a side window. >> we ended up with two firefighters injured. moderate injuries. they have both been transported to the hospital. >> reporter: pg&e is on the
6:10 am
scene. a fire captain told us that the power was out because of the fire. it's unclear why or how wide spread it was. as i mentioned we did see the streetlights come back on. now during this fire fight the roof did collapse. and all the firefighters had to move out of the house and start attacking this fire from the outside. just for their safety. when i spoke with neighbors they told me a couple lives in the home with their son. and right now we are assuming that those were the people that were rescued. there are police officers here on the scene. they were asking lots of questions. trying to confirm who was in that house. what their identities were. just to get a little bit more information. as far as we know right now, we don't know what their conditions are at all. as far as the firefighter goose we know it was minor moderate injuries. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news.

6:34 am
alex has new information about the size of this out of control fire. it stands at 1500-acres that have been burned. where here where we are winds are very calm. hardly a breeze at all. let me show you too as we push over here. now that the sun is beginning to come up here. we are just outside of clayton this morning. . you see this large plume of smoke rising up. it's almost going straight up in the air. good indication it's not a strong breeze. the fire 100 acres and 10% contained. over night according to firefighters i have just been talking to essentially what the flames did up these steep canyons. the fire has almost burned close to the peek of mt. diablo. that is 3800 feet.
6:35 am
that means about 100 more firefighters joining this receive fort. we are just outside of clayton and crews are trying to get a handle on the fire that started at 1:45 yesterday afternoon. throughout the day yesterday there were air tankers. it is threatening 100 or so. dry brush up here and gusty winds allowed the fire to take off. it's almost reached the summit of mt. diablo there is a communication center and several historic buildings. >> that is a concern. there are historic structures. there is quite a number of communication sites. >> at this point the cause of the fire is still under investigation. and crews are saying it could take several days to contain. cal fire has an incident management team that has been called in here. they are setting up a base camp
6:36 am
nearby in dublin. that is where 500 or so firefighters will be setting up shop and getting their assignments later on today and heading out into the field and working to build more containment likes around this fire that stands at 10% containment as it burns up the steep slopes of mt. diablo. this is a live picture. as you look up there we are showing you part of the communications center. that is obviously a huge concern. and as we speak right now there are fire crews up at the top of mt. diablo. they are doing what is called structure protection. they will try to protect this communication center and some of the other buildings that are up there at the top of mt. diablo. that is part of effort today. they will get a lot of help from the air. there will be an air attack. that will begin a couple hours from now. at 8:00 is when we get a couple air tankers and two water
6:37 am
dropping helicopters. more resources is being called in to try to get a handle on this large fire still burning. essentially out of control. steve, back to you. >> i think you confirmed what i was seeing. it looks like the smoke was going straight up. yesterday it was going south to north. can you see what direction it's going today. or is it very calm? >> yeah. if i have my barings correct here. we are looking south from this direction. the vantage point you're looking at is sort of south at the northern edge of the fire and the smoke from what i can tell sort of moving in an easterly direction. ever so slightly though. for the most part that smoke plume is really going straight up in the air. which is really a good sign for fire crews when they see that. that means they are not getting a lot of the gusty conditions like they had yesterday. >> and as far as any breeze i mean i know the fire can create its own. you are not feeling much at all are you? as far as anywhere near the fire. not much of a wind is there? >> not any sort of a breeze.
6:38 am
at least where we are this morning. and the other part of this thing it was real hot yesterday and i know you've been talking about the temperatures. fire crews out here talking about it will be a lot cooler. >> thanks. >> that fire has forced dozens of families out of their homes and tara moriarty is joining us near the evacuation center. you just talked to firefighters. >> yeah and they confirmed 100 homes have been evacuated. that is pretty much what we knew before midnight. but again just confirming that 100 homes have been evacuated. and right now it's difficult to see the orange glow of the fire because the sun is up. if you take a look behind me you can see that plume of black smoke. just before midnight we got word of more evacuations of people living on trail side road. russell man park road. all been ordered out by
6:39 am
emergency crews. there are two dozen homes in those areas. many people we spoke to said they were scared not only for themselves but the animals. there are a lot of horses and other livestock in the area. summaries dents went to the shelter that the red cross set up yesterday. >> last night there were i think a dozen people that were there. and none of them spent the night as far as i know. so they were red cross staff in the area all night. but all the people that needed places to go seemed to have places. >> the official evacuation center is at the clayton community library. evacuees with horse can go top heather farms park in walnut creek. or the contra costa county fairgrounds. officials are advising those that are leaving their houses to bring essential items only. they should lock their doors and windows behind them.
