>> reporter: a huge wildfire burning near mt. diablo continuing to grow in size this morning. we'll tell you about the important buildings at the summit of the mountain crews are trying protect. >> reporter: people near 100 homes near mt. diablo being evacuated. we'll let you know the latest numbers and also tell you where people are being told to go. two firefighters are among several people hurt in an early- morning house fire in fremont. we have new information about those injuries. and the debate over syria heats up on capitol hill today on the eve of the president's address on the nation. now. we continue following developing news this morning as an out-of-control wildfire on mt. diablo is spreading. in moments we'll have team coverage on what firefighters are saying this morning and people who are evacuated from their homes. good morning, welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, everybody. i'm brian flores. dave clark is off today. let's get your monday started off right with steve. i guess we're lucky it's not onier. >> that's correct, brian. there's a little bit of a breeze out of the west. but not much. 57 walnut creek. you get up towards 1500 feet, 3800 feet, it's much warmer, in the 70s. 76 around 1500 feet. west at 16. that's picked up a little bit. that's a positive. the humidity has gone up. we'll take that. as long as we don't get an easterly breeze or northerly breeze. it will be warm to hot today.

i still think 95 to 100 today by this afternoon for some of those areas dealing with very hot conditions. so far there's really not much of a breeze. the very warm air aloft is capping some of that fog keeping it closer to the deck. there's some moving inland. i know out towards hercules, we can soupy fogg. 50s, 60s up towards the north bay. tropical clouds will stay south so we have some fog, sun, cool to mild to warm to hot. it just depends on your location. farther inland, warm to hot. if you are bying the coast, it won't be that bad. here's sal. good morning. things are getting busier all over the place. we have a problem on the upper deck of the bay bridge. it looks like there's a stalled vehicle of some sort. westbound. it could be a stall or a minor accident. but you can see traffic coming out of the tunnel is going to be slow getting into san francisco. pretty soon, this will start to affect the traffic on the other we'll take a look at that next

time. let's also take a look at some of the other commutes, the san mateo bridge, westbound. it's a nice alternate. it's a nice drive over to highway 101, the peninsula. you can see for yourself, not a lot of fog. that will be good news if you are expecting someone or taking a flight yourself out of sfo. and on 80 westbound, the traffic is very slow because of a crash on 80 at mcbride. you can see how slow it is coming in from hercules to richmond. back to the desk. thank you. we begin with developings news from the east bay. a fast-moving wildfire has exploded in size on the eastern slope of mt. diablo. we have team coverage. ktvu's tara moriarty is cover, the dozens of people forced out of their homes. we begin with alex savidge near clayton where more help is on the way. good morning, alex. >> reporter: a lot more help is coming out here to help out the crews. the fire has grown in size, nearly doubled in size

overnight. the only bit of good news is that the fire is burning away from where homes are in this area which is just outside of clayton where we are this morning. what it is doing, is almost going straight up mt. diablo. it's been burning up in some of these steep canyons overnight. there's structures and a communications tower up there. crews are standing by to protect the structures. so far, the weather teams to be cooperating, we have light winds out here. the morgan fire has now burned about 1500 acres. it nearly doubled in size since yesterday. hand crews were out overnight. they've been able to build containment line around 10% of the fire's edge. more help is coming. 15 calfire strike teams have been called in. that means more than 100 extra firefighters joining the effort today. this fire started around 1:45 in the afternoon yesterday near morgan territory road and throughout the day, helicopters and air tankers made drops on

the fire as it threatened homes and ranches. the good news, no buildings have been lost. but flames have almost reached the summit of mt. diablo where there's a communications center and buildings and that's a big concern for fire crews. >> we're seeing the fires wanting to find a chimney or chute at the bottom of the drainage and run at the top of that. and last night we had wind that pushed it from the north side of the mountain down to the south. it's run this morning all the way to the summit of mt. diablo. >> reporter: the cause of this fire is still under investigation at this time. now, by later on today, there will be more than 500 firefighters battling these flames, a base camp is being set up nearby in dublin. so that calfire can coordinate this effort. the other thing that's gonna happen. just about an hour from now, that really will help the firefighting effort. they will begin the air attack. they will resume it. just about 8:00 this morning, there will be coming in with a

couple of -- they will be coming in with a couple of air tankers making drops and hopefully slow the spread. as you look off to the east, we bring you out to the live picture, you can see the smoke from the fire. quite a bit of it. a lot it is going straight to the air. you do see it is drifting slightly off to the east. if you live anywhere east the mt. diablo, you will get quite a bit of smoke. this fire putting off a lot of smoke as it continues to burn virtually out of control, just 10% containment. but the air drops will be continuing. we'll give you updates throughout the morning. we are live near clayton, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, alex. thank you. in the meantime, the fire has forced dozens of families out of their homes. ktvu's tara moriarty is live on clayton road near the evacuation center to el it -- to tell us where people can go.

>> reporter: the evacuation center is at the library. we want to mention that -- it seems as though if you take a look behind me, you can see there's that big plume of smoke. if we take some pictures from live chopper 2, you can get a better view of what's going on. as alex just mentioned, weed you -- we just found out the flames are not headed towards any homes. that's the good news. last night we understand that no one stayed at the evacuation center. they all had places to stay. about a dozen people showed up to get help. and when the fire is over -- when the fire is over, firefighters will call the residents. people on trail ride, russell, east upper and lower were all ordered out by crews. earlier last night, we had about 75 homes evacuated at oak hill, curry point road and the curry point area. about 100 homes total

evacuated. some people were scared not only for themselves but for the animals. there are so many horses and other livestock in the area. >> there's a bunch of truck trucks up there. they want to make it safe for everybody else to go up. so you have to wait. >> reporter: the evacuation center located 6021 curry road. officials are advising those leaving their homes to take morgan trt and bring essential items only and -- territory and bring essential items only. keep your doors and windows locked. we'll keep you posted. this fire appears to be headed away from homes. that's the really good news. live from clayton, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> definitely good news. at ktvu.com, we have a slide show of the photos we've received from many viewers since the fire began. you can find it on our home

page under the images tab. we're following developing news in fremont where five people have been injured in a house fire. two of them firefighters. the fire started around 4:00 a.m. at a home off fairwell drive and vernon avenue. witnesses say smoke could be seen from the freeway. fire crews first attacked the flames from inside but then had to move outside once the roof collapsed. crews now have the claims under control but are still monitoring hot spots. there's part -- part of highway 12 is back open in sonoma county after a 40-acre fire. it was first reported yesterday afternoon on the shoulder of highway 121 north of eighth street. that was just south of downtown sonoma. investigators believe the fire may have been started by sparks that came from a tow truck. the fire also spread to a nearby pallet factory causing propane tanks to explode. at least six structures, including several rvs were

destroyed yit. the chp had closed traffic on highway 12 and highway 21. a man fell to his death on a walkway outside of candlestick park at the 49ers opener. a viewer sent us this scene. police say an unidentified man in his 30s was walking on the elevated walkway just across james town avenue when he fell. witnesses told police the man appeared to be intoxicationed. police in indianapolis are investigating a scary accident after the colts' games. two fans were hurt when a rail collapsed at lucas oil stadium yesterday. witnesses say the two victims had been leaning against a railing just above the tunnel used by the raiders when init gave way -- when it gave way. happening today, b.a.r.t. management and its two unions

are heading back to the bargaining table. this will be the first time the two sides have met since a 60- day court-ordered cooging off period began -- cooling off period began a month ago. that cooling off period lasts until october 10th. both sides still disagree on pension and pay. if no agreement is reached, b.a.r.t. could strike again. and the silicon valley extension will slow down traffic on some major south bay roadways. drivers should expect delays on hot setter road in san jose. capital avenue in milpitas. and just for next weekend, the mantague expressway in milpitas. as soon as today, california lawmakers could approve naming a sec of the bay bridge after willie brown. according to the chronicle, the

welcome back to "mornings on 2." time now is 7:15 on the -- on the d.o.t.. these are live pictures on the eastern slope of mt. diablo. we're hearing it's 1500 acres that's grown in size overnight. close to 500 firefighters will be there later today. they are setting up a camp near dublin this morning. airdrops are set to begin around 8:00 this morning. about 100 homes have been evacuated so far. the good news, it appears the smoke appears to be going up, as there's little to know wind.

we'll keep track of the fire throughout the morning. the debate over striking syria kicks into high gear today when congress returns from a month-long recess. kyla campbell is in our ktvu washington, d.c. bureau to explain what the obama administration is doing to rally support. kyla? >> reporter: tori, we know that president barack obama is sitting down with six tv networks for interviews. the white house could boost democratic support for strikes with a heavy hitter. hillary clinton will be at the white house for an unrelated event today. but she's expected to make a statement supporting president obama's call for military intervention in syria. it is a move that could sway some undecided democrats in congress to support strikes. republican congressman mike rogers is the head of the house intelligence committee. he said this morning the u.s. needs to figure out how to secure syria's chemical weapons. he argued this escalating conflict is not just a civil war in syria. >> it's a proxy war with iran

[chanting] >> code pink protesters rallied on the golden gate bridge over the weekend. they say they fear even a limited military strike could lead to a long-term u.s. strike in syria. activists in favor of u.s. intervention rallied in union square. 7:18. filling up your gas tank will costing you a little more this morning. according to the lundberg survey, gas prices have gone up 3 cents in the past two weeks. the average price for a gallon in california, $3.86. here's a look at what bay area drivers are paying. in san francisco it's costing

about 3.95 for regular unleaded fuel. that's the most expensive gas in the state. in san jose, drivers are paying $3.89. in oakland, it's about $3.87 to fill up. >> remember when gas used to be $1 point -- 1.99 or 1.50. >> cheaper than that. >> yeah. i don't think that will come back any time soon. >> no. sal? >> i remember when gas was invented. don't you try to one-up me, man. [laughter] we do have a busy commute for a friday. the commute is going to be busy on the bridges and the approach to the bridge is a mess because of a stalled vehicle on the upper deck of the bay bridge. what happens is they turn the metering lights on to extra slow to allow the bridge traffic to slow out. i will slow you traffic. you can see how slow it is coming up on a stalled vehicle in the right lane. i think they just cleared it. it was right there.

i don't see it anywhere. traffic will take a little bit to unwind to get into the city. if you are driving into the city, it will affect you. once you get on the ban, there's a bunch of slow traffic. let's talk about the commute. as a matter of fact, the traffic is not all that bad if you are driving on 58 -- 580. it's slow coming in dublin. you will see slow traffic on 680 and 2 had 2 242. b.a.r.t. and caltrain are on time. muni has minor delays because of earlier problems that are fixed. but still delays there. let's go to steve. all right. from the mt. diablo fire here, smoke coming straight up. there's not much of a breeze. although nice tweet from bev

out towards san ramon says she can see the flames going up towards the top, towarding the ridge. a lot of pictures coming in spweather if you want to tweet me. the conditions still look hot to me. we're starting off. we'll go 78 at 80. west at 15. that helps a little bit. we don't want an easterly breeze. it will be between 95 and 100 today. higher up, it will probably be about 95, 96. 56 walnut creek. 57 san ramon. it's cool, you get up around 1500 to 3800 feet, it's very mild to warm. in fact, there's warm air aloft. 76 now. west wind at 16. humidity has gone up a little bit. that's the one positive. not a lot. still, very, very dry. but conditions are better than yesterday. tropical clouds stay to the south. rain down towards las vegas or the desert of southern california. 50s and 60s. even a 48. there's a big difference in some of the slows as much as a good 15 degrees in some.

a new stinging pest is stinging across northern california. this is a picture of the paper waus p. the invasive -- wasp. the invasive insect is about the size of a yellow jacket. but its body is more slender. their population is increasing. scientists say the warm, dry weather has allowed for more queens to survive and layings. dennis rodman is back from his second trip to north korea with news that the country's leader, kim jung un, is the father of a baby girl.

rodman said kim is a good dad with a beautiful family. in photos issued last year by north korea's state news agency, kim's wife appeared to be pregnant but nothing has been confirmed. rodman says during the trip he relaxed with kim and his family and talked about organizing a basketball game between the two countries. 7:25. and nascar says it plans to invest whether two drivers manipulated a race at a qualifying event for the annual sprint cup playoff. the new york times reports nascar officials are looking into whether clint bowyer deliberate will the spun out to help a driver make the playoffs and knock another out of convention. the clays for the sprint cup is scheduled to begin september 15th at the chicagoland speedway. >> double flip there. prete impressive. the wildfire near clayton has nearly doubled in size since yesterday evening. we'll continue our team

doubled in size since yesterday evening. it started about 1:45 yesterday afternoon. many people watched the huge flames grow from their ranch homes nestled in the hills, just east of mt. diablo. >> it is what it is. we have a barn and a shop with a nice house. if it burns down, you just rebuild. that's the way it is. >> i worry about the animals. that's what bothers us. >> there are no reports of injuries yet. there's no word yet on how the fire started. ktvu's alex savidge will have an update coming up at 8:00 from the fire lines. the fire has forced dozens of families out of their homes. tara moriarty is live near the evacuation center to tell us where the people can go if they need to leave. tara? >> reporter: that's at the library, actually, that people are being told to go. we've been keeping an 0 i eye on this fire. when we first arrived, it was dark. you can see the orange glow. right now, you can definitely

see the smoke. that's the most visible. you can see how intense these flames are. last night, we understand that nobody stayed at the evacuation center. they all found places to stay with family and friends. but about a dozen people showed up to get help. they checked in. when this fire is over, the fire officials will call the residents and let them know when they can go back to their homes. russellman, east upper and lower trail roads, all ordered out by emergency crews. we had about 7500 homes off oak hill lane, curry canyon road and the curry point area. 100 homes evacuated total. many people we spoke to said they were scared not only for themselves but for the animals. there's a lot of horses and other livestock in the area. you can imagine the sense of urgency yesterday afternoon and last night as neighbors watched the fire spread. >> it seemed like they had it under control. but it was close to morgan

territory. i could see it within a half quarter mile, maybe a quarter mile. i seen all of the firefighters lined up going up the hill. it's spreading in patches. you can see it jumping around. >> reporter: the official evacuation is at the clayton community -- community library. those are horses can go to the heather farms park or the pair grounds in antioch. officials are urging to take only essential items and close and lock doors and windows. live from clayton, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we have new pictures of the mt. diablo fire that viewers sent us about an hour ago. these were taken and sent in late last night. you can see the glow of the fire and the flames. one shows the plane dropping flame retardant on the fire. this is very rugged terrain for the firefighters to be in. at ktvu.com.

we have a slide slow of the viewer photos we've seen receiving it. you can find it on our home page and send any more photos that you can. we're following developing news at a house fire in fremont that sent seven people to be treated at the hospital. it started about 4:00 off farwell drive and vernon avenue. janine de la vega has been on scene since 5:00 this morning and tells us if any hot spots remain. janine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, in the last 30 to who minutes, firefighters allow -- 40 minutes, firefighters allowed the people next door to the house where the fire broke out back into their homes. you can see them standing there and right behind them, you can see the house that -- still has smoke rising from the roof. but the fire has been extinguished. inside the home is gutted. flames were shooting around 60 feet in the air when firefighters and police arrived. it was visible from 880 near mowry shortly after it began at

4:30 a.m. a police officer, we're told, drove his patrol car on the front lawn which helped firefighters because they used the hood of the patrol car to climb onto the window and rescue a trapped man. firefighters pulled another man and woman out unresponsive as well. while fighting the fire, the roof collapsed which prompted all firefighters to exit and fight the flames from outside. two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. >> it's pretty scary when it's this close to home. it could happen so fast, the whole house up in smoke. >> reporter: there were two police officers who suffered from smoke inhalation who drove themselves to the hospital, we're told. pg&e ended up cutting power to 2,000 people in this neighborhood as a safety precaution. now everybody's power has been restored. investigators are inside the home. they are looking for what may have caused the fire.

police here are also -- are also here because it's a standard procedure when there are injuries in a fire, they come just in case a crime has occurred. but it could be determined this was accidental. they just don't know. that's why they are being safe. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. a team of experts is now on sight of the rim wildfire burning in and around yosemite national park. the burned area emergency response crew is made up of you 50 scientists from the u.s. forest service. they arrived yesterday and will check roads, bridges, campgrounded and other properties burned. they are checking for damage and mudslides. the fire is 80% contained. full containment is expected by september 20th. the city of san francisco has agreed to pay $175,000 to settle a firefighter's lawsuit claiming racial discrimination you. the chronicle reports the san francisco fire commission has

approved a payment to settle a lawsuit brought by larry jacobs. jacobs said he was called a house boy and assigned menial tasks, including scrubbing floors with a toothbrush. some veteran firefighters have verified his claims. city supervisors must still set the settlement. we're learning more about a deadly shooting in west berkeley. police say they found a man who had been shot just before 6:00 last night on eighth and page streets. the one has rushed to the hospital but did not survive. the berkeley site blog reports the man was visiting friends before the shooting and is a graduate of berkeley high. berkeley police say one person has been detained. san francisco general hospital is asking for help in identifying a critically injured patient. the hospital released two photos of the man. he was found unconscious in union square saturday morning. authorities say he's in critical condition after suffering a severe head injury, likely from a fall.

he's been 30 and 40 years old. 5'10", weighs 165 pounds. he was carrying a jeep key and a silver house key. today is the third anniversary of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion and fire. a 30-inch natural gas pipeline blew up after 6:00 this evening in the crestmoore neighborhood. eight people were killed. another 60 injured. 38 homes were destroyed. state regulators drilled pg&e about record-keeping flaws. the disclosure comes as the p.u.c. considers a $4 billion fine against pg&e for the san bruno blast. starting today, law enforcement in santa clara valley will be will be participating in a plan to help kids get to school safety. during the program, officers willers force traffic violations through the school zones. they will focus on violations by drivers as well as commuting students. we continue to follow that

them, next hour. sheriff deputies are investigating the shooting outside of a skating rink in antioch that left one woman dead and two men injured at 1:30 a.m. yesterday on the contra costa county fairgrounds at the paradise rink. a fight spilled outdoors and someone opened fire killing a 34-year-old woman. >> i seen the gun go up and he was like put it back in. after that, everybody was scattering. >> the woman's name has not been released. investigators say more than 100 people were at the roller rink for an adult late-night skate jam when the shooting happened. so far, no arrests have been made. after many years of silence an oakland man is telling his story of abuse at an old reform school in florida. paul price has called oakland his home for more than 35 years. he says it's because he wanted to live as far away from florida as possible. in the last week, a team in

alternate. b.a.r.t. is a good one. so is the san mateo bridge if you can do that and head up 101. let's slow you a picture of the san mateo bridge. that traffic is moving along nicely. not a big delay. 101 is not all that bad driving from san mateo into san francisco that way. speaking of 101, let's talk about the south bay, just a lot of red on the maps. we had a lot of fender-benders earlier, we have a lot of slow traffic coming through especially at the south end of the valley as you drive through. but also 280 is slow. pretty much from the downtown area all the way through. i do want to mention that traffic on 101 coming south and north into mountain view, 101 in mountain view is not that great. you can see i'm tracing this line with all of the slow traffic in mountain view heading up to palo alto. i do watt -- i think i mentioned that b.a.r.t. is on time. that's a great alternate for you for the bay bridge. just drive on in. let's go to steve. the smoke continues to lift from the mt. diablo fire.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." we continue to follow the developing news of an out-of- control wildfire burning on mt. diablo. these are live pictures from newschopper2. evacuations are in order. more fire crews are heading to scene to help. more developments coming up good morning, everybody. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm brian flores. >> i'm tori campbell. dave clark is off today. a quick look at weather and traffic. what's the weather like, steve? >> there's not much of a breeze. that's the good news. there is a little component of a westerly breeze. that's turned northerly towards mt. diablo. some of that should go south and east. at the surface, a lot of locations in the 50s nktion you start to move up a little bit you get in the mid- to upper 70s. very warm air aloft, also capping some of that fog. shallow marine layer. 67 antioch. livermore, 68. san jose, 64. we did have some upper froerlts

and low 50s in the north bay this morning. temperatures are starting to bounce off the morning lows. it will be a warm to hot day. i think today is the last day to warm up. it could be 99 to 100 inland some locations near the coast will be in the 60s. 68 in san francisco. a little bit of an onshore breeze but not much of one. i think that will pick up tomorrow as the low starts to settle in. cutting in from the back door. fog, sun, mild for tomorrow. warm, hot for others. the bay fog will refreet back to the coast. temperatures, 90s to 100s. by the water edge, 6, 70s -- 60s, 70s. we had a stalled vehicle up to the bay bridge. we're seeing some improvement but there's still a backup. they've sped the metering lights today. the upper deck looks good. you can look at traffic moving well. it wasn't looking so good. right now it's recovered. i want to mention that traffic

is slow in the east bay as you can see on 238 and on 880. you can see traffic on 880 heading south. it's a big mess out of hayward to fremont. on the peninsula, we do have traffic that's going to be slow. i would still say that's a good way to get to the other side of the bay and in san jose, we had a lot of slow traffic on 101. i want to show you smoke from san francisco, taken by papa bear-x. one of the tweets. the sun is being blocked out by the smoke from mt. diablo. let's go back to the desk. developing news from the east bay. a fast-moving wildfire has exploded in size. >> the morgan fire is burning near clayton. alex savidge has been on the fire line since early this morning. what's the situation like now? >> reporter: right now there's an effort underway to protect some historic buildings and a communications tower that sits

on top of mt. diablo. let me give you a sense of where we are. we're just outside of clayton, actually standing along marsh creek road if you are familiar with this area. right now, i'm told fire crews are standing by on the summit. they've been there overnight concerned about the flames reaching the top of the mountain. that's where they are. crews are standing by to do structure protexas and make sure those buildings don't burn. we've seen the fire burn straight up mt. diablo. going up through these very steep canyons. firefighters describe it as this acting like chimneys. these roo live pictures coming from newschopper2 this morning. you can can get a size of the morgan -- you can get a size of the morgan fire. it's now burned about 1500 acres of dry brush. most of the active fire is bushing away from homes and

ranches. overnight, hand crews were out here and able to build a containment line about 10% of the edge of the fire. more help is on the way as well. 15 calfire strike teams are moving in today and by the end of the day today, there will be about 500 or so firefighters out here fighting these flames. the fire started yesterday afternoon. we can show you some video. it continues to threaten still about 100 or so homes and ranches right outside of clayton, but so far, no buildings have been lost. there were very gusty conditions in place yesterday. firefighters tell me they are hoping the weather cooperates today. >> we're hoping for -- we're not hoping for but we're expecting, you know, low humidities. light winds, and fire behavior about what we saw yesterday. daylight will be a big advantage to us because we can work the tankers and helicopters more. >> reporter: the cause of the fire, still being investigated right now. speaking of the air attack,

that will resume any time now, actually. we were told it would start around 8:00. still have not seen any of the aircraft doing drops. we are told there should be a couple of air tankers and water- dropping-ers. they will come in and drop water and -- as well as fire retardant on the fire. the morgan fire starts around 1500 acres burned and resources are on the way to slow the fire and contain it. it's still 10% contained. live outside of clayton, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. the big fire on the eastern slope of mt. diablo has led to mandatory evacuations. hours ago, we learned that emergency crews have now evacuated at least00 homes -- 100 homes. it's possible more people could be forced out of their homes with containment still at 10%. tara moriarty is at the evacuation center this morning. she'll have a live update in about 30 minutes. the official evacuation

a man fell to his death on a walkway outside of candlestick park during the san francisco's opener. a viewer ent is us this photo. it happened around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. police say an unidentified man in his 30s was walking on the elevated walkway across jamestown avenue when he fell. witnesses told police the man appeared to be intoxicated. police in indianapolis are investigating a scary accident that happened after the colts' game. two fans were hurt when a rail collapsed during the colts' home opener yesterday. the fans say the two imhaves were leaning against a railing above the tunnel used by the raiders when engave way. one fan was taken away in a stretcher. another left in a wheelchair. no word on their condition. happening today, talks are resuming between b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. management and the two unions, this will be the first time

since the court orderedle coulding off period began that the two sides will meet. both sides still agree on pay and benefits. if no deal is reached before then, b.a.r.t. workers could go on strike. starting this week, work on the silicon valley extension will slow down traffic on major roadways. drivers should expect delays on hotsetter road, as well as capitol expressway. the berryessa extension is set to open in 2017. as soon as today, california lawmakers could approve naming a section of the bay bridge after willie brown. the resolution is quickly moving through the legislature. it would rename the western span of the bay bridge after mayor brown. brown wrote an editorial against naming the bridge after him. but the chronicle reports that the proposal has the support of

the politically powered naacp as well as many lawmakers. meanwhile, the new eastern span of the bay bridge had a lot of traffic this weekend. this was the first weekend visitors had access to the bridge since reopening last monday. officials estimate roughly 450 people visited the bridge per hour. the chp officers were seen patrolling the officer bike path. they say it was to help with crowd control. meet. metering lighting are on for concord and pittsburg along the highway 4 and 242, they will glow green to get drivers used to seeing the lights. they will be on during commute times. santa rosa, may be putting an end to the idea of a county wide plastic bag ban. for two years, sonoma county has been trying to build support for the measure. the ban would require a unanimous vote from all ten members of the waste management agency. but if santa rosa decides not

to participate, it would kill the countywide ban. city leaders have reservations about the loss of local control. right now the vote is scheduled for september 18th. city leaders in san francisco are debating whether it's necessary for skyscrapers to have air refill stations for firefighters. a for the past ten years, the city has required new high rises to have refill stations so firefighters can recharge their air tanks during a fire. but according to the chronicle, the air tank refilling systems have never been used during a fire. firefighters say developers should have the option of installing specialized elevators that could carry fire equipment instead. smokers visiting downtown santa cruz may have to travel farther to take a puff. some city leaders want to expand the current no-smoking area. the group is scheduled to vote on the ban tomorrow. right now, it's only illegal to smoke on pacific avenue.

there's kind of two layers to the smoke. going straight up and a little bit drifting east and south. there's reports of ash toward the livermore area. 76 at 8:00 a.m. humidity has gone up a tiny bit. at least we're holding onto what appears to be a westerly direction. we had some 50s and 60s at the surface. mt. diablo, 73. you get up around 1500 feet. it's already 76. west at 16. 26% humidity. a little bit better today than yesterday. very warm air aloft kind of capping the fog which puts on the deck. that's influenced mainly only for the coast and bay locations. 60s, 70s. 50s towards the north bay. very mild conditions. livermore kind of in line for a little bit of that ash. maybe a little bit more smoke. it will be another very harm to hot day in supper 90s for -- upper 90s for many locations. the fog looks like it will start to brie group tomorrow.

by wednesday we'll drop 5 degrees. coast and bay, still harm to hot. kind of smoke and hazy for some. 60s and 70s. 90s for some. sal has an update on traffic. we're looking at traffic that's kind of winding down. finally we're seeing some improvement around the bay. let's first go to the east shore freeway. we had an earlier motorcycle accident near gilman street. you can see it's sill very crowded. there's vehicles on the shoulder. chp is there. it's jam packed coming in from richmond. that's why it will be slow. we're looking at the toll plaza. that's still about a 20, 25- minute delay before you make it on the span. taking a look at some drive times, highway 4 speeds at about 20 miles an hour through the construction zone from lone tree way to loverrage. 680, 2 -- 680, 242 to 24,

around 33 miles an hour. back to the desk. we continue to follow the fast moving fire near clayton. the morgan fire continues to burn out of control on the eastern slopes of mt. diablo. our news crew took this dramatic video before dawn this morning. calfire says the fire has burned at least 1500 acres. that means the fire has nearly doubled in size since yesterday evening. containment still only about 10%. alex savidge will have an update in just a few minutes. meantime the fire has forced a mandatory evacuation of about 100 homes. tara moriarty is live on clayton road near the evacuation center to tell us where people can go if they need to. >> reporter: we're here at the evacuation center at clayton library. i want to pass along to you that cdf air attack is on the scene of the fire at mt. diablo. if you take a look behind me, you can see the red cross is set up. nobody actually stayed here at the center last night. but about a dozen people showed

up to get help, check in and when this fire is over, fire officials will cause residents hand let them know when they can move back into their homes. as of midnight, those who live in houses on trail ride, russell, all ordered out by crews. earlier last night we had 75 homes evacuated off oak hill, curry canyon and the curry point area. so00 homes totals -- so 100 homes total. one woman is taking coffee out to the dog shelter where the dogs went to be evacuated. a friend of mine who lives in morgan territory, saw 15 trailers coming through. that's where all of the horses are. they are really worried about them out there, too. >> reporter: they got out pretty quickly? >> yes. so far, everybody is working together. >> reporter: evacuees with horses can go to heather farms park in walnut creek or the contra costa county fairgrounds in antioch. the officials are advising

good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a man and a woman pulled out of the home behind me were pulled out of their unresponsive. but now we've been told that they are conscious at the hospital and they are being interviewed by police and firefighters. now, two firefighters are also at the hospital they are being treated for bushes. they were injured while extinguishing the flames on this house that's now gutted. this is a new video that we have taken by a neighbor shortly after the fire began at 4:30 a.m. flames were shooting about 60 feet in the air from the roof of this house on farwell drive. when police and firefighters arrived, they found a man trapped inside. he was pulled from a side window and so was another man and a woman. firefighters say metal security bars and a dead bolt prevented them from getting into the house quicker. neighbors stood and watched in disbelief as the flames ripped through the house. they say a couple and their adult son who is you a tick

lives in the home -- autistic lives in the home. >> concerned about the three people who live there, if they got out, and it has toward to find anybody that knew anything. i did see the older man who lives there. they -- he went away in stretcher. he was moving. >> reporter: the fire was so intense that the roof collapsed, forcing firefighters to fight it from the outside. the two firefighters who were injured were taken to the hospital. they are suffering from burns to their legs and one of them has burns to the wrist. the two officers, a man, woman went to the hospital. they were being treated for smoke inhalation. they were just released in the last ten minutes here. investigators are still on the scene. they are inside the house looking to see where the fire started, what might have caused it. we still don't have the answers yet. if we do, we'll bring you an update at noon.

reporting live from fremont, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, janine. 8:37. a team of experts is now on site of the rim wildfire still burning in and around yosemite national park. the burned area emergency response crew, known as a bear team is made up of 50 scientists from the u.s. forest service. they arrived yesterday. they will check roads, bridges, campgrounds and other property that has burned. they are checking for damage and the risk of mudslides. the state's third largest wildfire has burned almost 400 square miles. it's 80% contained. full containment is expected by september 20th. and the city of san francisco has agreed to pay 175,000 to settle a firefighter's lawsuit claiming racial discrimination. the san francisco chronicle reports the san francisco fire commission has approved the payment to settle a lawsuit brought by 48 pld larry jacobs ---year-old larry jacobs. jacobs said he was called a

house boy and assigned medial tavels including scrubbing floors with a toothbrush. some veterans firefighters agreed. we're learning more about a deadly shooting in west berkeley. police say they found a man shot before 6:00 last night on eighth and page street. the man was rushed to the hospital but didn't survive. the berkeley blog reports the man was visiting friends before the shooting is -- and is a graduate from berkeley high. one person has been detained. police are looking for help identifying a critically injured patient. the man was found unconscious in union stair on saturday morning. authorities say he's in critical condition after suffering head injuries likely from a fall. he's about 5'10", weighs about 165 pounds. he was carrying a jeep key and

silver house key. today is the third anniversary of the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion and fire. a 30-inch natural gas pipeline blew up just after 6:00 in the evening in the crestmoore neighborhood. eight people were killed. another 60 injured and 38 homes destroyed. state regulators grilled pg&e last week about newly revealed pipeline record-keeping flaws. the disclosure comes as the p.u.c. kerrs a $4 billion fine against pg&e for the san bruno blast. in three weeks, open enrollment starts on president obama's healthcare law. the time line for hire ing and training workers is pretty site. groups are scrambling to hire navigators to help people shop superior insurance and compare their options. food banks, shelters and free clinicses are some of the

san jose police chief as he deals with a very serious problem. pam cook has more. >> three people were killed over the weekend in san jose and there's growing concern that the city is getting more dangerous. the weekend started with a 46- year-old man shot and killed in the berryessa neighborhood on friday. police arrested a man in connection with the murder the next day. on saturday night, police say a man stabbed his wife to death at a home on dakota drive. then yesterday morning a man was found dead in a parked car near the tennis courts at san jose state university. the problem many people are concerned about is the dwindling police force in san jose. the city council has approved an additional 200 officers over the next four years. according to a new study in the san jose mercury news, the number of officers leaving the san jose police department could well outnumber the prospective new officers the department hires. mayor reed and one councilman are trying to restore a 10% pay cut from two years ago.

but the police union says that may not be enough because of staffing shortages, many officers are working overtime. a sergeant was invunted who works with the gang suppress unit. he says some officers are working 30 hours of overtime in a 40-hour wek and are breeching a -- week and are reaching a breaking point. let's check in with sal. we had an earlier motorcycle accident. fortunately, injuries were not major but the traffic didn't -- was not really great as a result. so i will show you the traffic on 80 westbound is busy driving through. they finally have removed remnants of the crash on the shoulder. you can see how crowded it is. steve is probably looking at the picture noticing some of the fog moving into the area. it's not foggy at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's about a 25-minute delay. if you are wondering if it's improved since last week, a little bit. i think more people are getting

causing the roof to collapse. firefighters are still on scene monitoring hot spots. syrian's president says the united states will face consequences if there's a military strike over syria's use of chemical weapons. meantime, russia is urging syria to hand over its chemical weapons. secretary of state john kerry says a strike can be averted if syria deliver, the chemical weapons within a week. we continue to follow the morgan fire. it continues to burn on the eastern slopes of mt. diablo. alex savidge has been on the fire lines since 4:30 and he has this update. >> reporter: good morning. an evacuation order is still in place for about 100 or so homes here outside of clayton. in talking with calfire representatives, they say much of the fire is burning up the mountain, burning straight up the steep rugged canyons. in fact, a representative from calfire did tell me within certain spots, the flames have

reached the summit. you can see the fire putting off smoke. the morgan fire doubled in size. it's burned about 1500 acres of dry brush in this area. most of the active fire moving away from fires and ratches -- ranches outside of clayton. the fire is continuing to grow and continuing to move. now as flames burn toward the summit of mt. diablo there's a major effort underway to protect some historic state buildings and a communications tower up there. engines are there standing by in case the fire gets closer. there's a considerable amount of fuel up there, the structures tend to be nestled back in the fuel areas. it's a concern. we're doing everything we can to get firefighters in there and clear the fuel away from them. a lot more help has been called in today.

15 calfire strike teams have been called in from across the state. that's more than 100 or so firefighters who will be helping out. by the end of the day or at the peablg today, they expect to have -- peak today, they expect to have 500 or so firefighters out on the front lines trying to contain the morgan fire which broke out around 1:45 yesterday afternoon. early on, it was threatening quite a few homes in the area. the good news, so far, no buildings have been lost. we bring you out here to a live picture. most of the fire, the active fire burning up mt. diablo and a lot of these steep rugged areas. that's why at any minute now we expect they will be moving in with some aircraft. the ash tank -- air takers. they will drop both water around rardant on the fire trying to slow its spread. live near clayton, ktvu channel 2 news, alex savidge.
