12:00 pm
we have new information on the size of the morgan fire raging in contra costa county that's threatening nearly 100 homes and what calfire says it needs to battle this growing wildfire in mt. diablo state park. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we're continuing to follow developing news out of contra costa where the wildfire is burning out of control. the morgan hill fire is burning on the eastern side of the mt.
12:01 pm
diablo. overnight, the fire doubled in size since it broke out yesterday afternoon around 1:30 and we just received new numbers on how big the fire is right now. so far, it has burned more than 3,000 acres. these are live pictures of some of the fire lines from newschopper2. crews are getting a handle on it and right now it's 20% contained and nearly 100 homes are under a mandatory evacuation. rosemary orozco is tracking the fire conditions and brian flores is talking to evacuees. we begin our coverage with tara moriarty who joins us live near the fire lines in clayton. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're at the end of curry canyon. you can see the ridge up there. we've noticed flames leap up over the ridge several times since we've been here for the of past couple of hours. now it seems it's quieting
12:02 pm
down. the smoke is a whitish color. it appears things are getting better. it's lows smoky than it was a couple of hours ago. the wind had picked up. it's erratic. a care caravan of air strikes. 500 firefighters are now tackling this fire that doubled in size overnight. >> i'm not leaving. i'm staying. >> reporter: jack wilson knows he should leave but says he can't. >> i've got a brand-new house that i've built here. you can see it. i've been working on that for three years. i have to protect it. >> reporter: wilson says crews have bound to take a stand near his home. he's not worried but others are not taking chances. >> got a couple of lamas. i have to let them loose. it's the worse i've had. >> i have horses, dogs, cats. you do what you have to do. >> reporter: firefighters are trying to protect historic state buildings and a communication tower on the top of mt. diablo as this fire
12:03 pm
surges the summit. >> we've got some very steep rugged terrain. a lot of it is very inhack sessible for our firefighters to get into it so getting some of those hot spots out will be real critical today. >> reporter: evacuations are underway for trail ray, russell, east upper and lower trail road, oakville lane, and the curry point area. >> you can never tell when the winds are golden going to surface and push down. >> reporter: wilson said they've cleared all of the brush around his home. this is a very dynamic fire. so everyone is on their guard. live near clayton, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. let's go to rosemary tracking the weather conditions. >> it is hot out there, once again, for today. that works in favor of the
12:04 pm
fire. it burns faster. tara actually said that the winds are erattic. that's because even though the winds are coming from the northwest and west primarily, the canyons and the fire, definitely can create their own winds and that happens probably happening today. the winds are northwest at times, 17 miles an hour. expected to grow a little faster in the afternoon. relative humidity is not bad. the one positive thing about the westerly wind is that it's coming in from the pacific. it's a moisturer wind and that could help slow the fire a little bit. if we have wind, at least it's coming with a moist flow and not from the northeast, which would be dry. now, the air quality management district has decided to issue a smoke quality alert there. it's for contra costa county, alameda county, and areas right around santa clara county. again, it's because of the winds, the way they are blowing, north and northwest. i've put the arrows for which way the smoke will be drifting
12:05 pm
towards areas near antioch, perhaps brentwood but farther south as you get into areas around livermore and then down closer to the santa clara area. so we'll be tracking the fire. we'll have the latest on ktvu.com right here on ktvu and then an update at 5:00. tori? >> thank you. the official evacuation center for the morgan fire is the clayton community library at 1625 clayton road. since much of the area is considered horse country, many evacuees with horses can go to the contra costa county fairgrounds in antioch or heather farms park in walnut creek. that's where we find brian flores who talked to some horse owners. good afternoon, brian. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. if you are familiar with the area of clayton, there's many ranches and tables. there's about six horses, four, and two over here. they are calling this place
12:06 pm
home until the owners are given the go ahead to go back home. owners were able to find other places to house their horses. but here in walnut creek, there's still plenty of room for evacuated horses. right now there are six. a volunteer group have the capacity right now to take on about 20 to 25 additional horses if need be. they say they've actually gotten calls from a ranch in alamo because the noek is becoming a danger to the horses' health. there was another ranch from clayton that came back to see if they could house their horses here. for the horses here, they are doing fine. one owner brought two horses. he said the fire was pretty close to endangering his horses. >> every 300, 400 yards it was on the ridge above it. we don't live out there.
12:07 pm
we keep our horses out there. you can feel the heat. >> reporter: the horses here are in good condition. they are being fell wed and taken care of. many companies have come and donated horses' needs and care feed. you can see the smoke coming over the ridge here on mt. diablo. as for the other pets, we understand there are a couple of places taking them in. we understand that clayton valley hospital has room for 20 dogs and cats, even birds. we understand there's a dog care facility, they had to be evacuated last night at 5:00. according to a voice mail greeting on the phone, they are doing fine. we're live in walnut creek, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. our viewers have been sending us their pictures of the mt. diablo fire. this one came in by e-mail. eric shot it at midnight. rich sent his picture via e-
