news chopper 2 at memorial park. the fire burned a half acre. it started at 4:10 p.m. today. it is burning in a grove on a hillside. no structures are threatened. developing news out of san jose. a s.w.a.t. team swarmed a neighborhood an an attempted home invasion today prompting a shelter in place and school lock downs. ktvu's robert handa tells us about evidence police officers recovered. robert? >> reporter: we are on story road, an hour ago deputies began letting residents back in because they checked every home here. but the search is still going on right now. and they found one of the guns used in the home invasion. they believe the suspect is armed and dangerous. >> reporter: a s.w.a.t. team and deputies went house tahouse in -- to -- went house

to house this afternoon looking for men armed with guns who tried to pull off a home invasion at this house just before noon. >> reporter: the sheriff's department and san jose police swarmed the area after neighbors hurt screaming coming from the home. two schools were locked down and residents received a reverse 911 call telling them oo shelter in -- to shelter in place. >> cops everywhere. ican't get out this way, can't get out that way. >> i am in shock. i don't know what is going on. i am on my way to pick up my son and i am not able to go to the school to pick him up i guess. >> one of the suspects escaped but the sheriff's department caught the other four and were examining what investigators believe was a planned get away vehicle, this van parked near

legislator. now former assembly speaker and san francisco mayor willie brown has a new honor. ktvu's john sasaki is live with the controversial vote about renaming the bay bridge. john? >> reporter: there it is. the willie brown bridge and here is an effort to stop the renaming of the bridge. a lawsuit filed today. they voted this morning tarename the -- to rename the bridge willie brown bridge. but critics say they broke their rules in doing this. we talked to a man who files suit today. but first we bought up with brown and he said he is honored to have the bridge named after him. >> i think it will be a guide post for lots of young people in the state of california.

safety bill. he proposed the measure after the tragic limo fire that killed five women on the bridge last may. it would require limos have two rear side doors and one emergency rear push out window. the senate also is expected to vote to creating an earthquake early warning system for california. the bill would direct the office to work with university of california at berkeley, u.s. geological survey to develop the system. it would include censors that could give a 30 second warning. governor jerry brown has till october 13 to sign any of the bills passed. in a city rocked by murder, one man is being honored for his effort to stop the violence. ktvu's ken pritchett reports on the man who turned his tragedy into a triumph over crime. >> announcer: was not what

seconds. a man walked into a store, stole a laptop and took off. as you see here it was all caught on tape. at 6:00 p.m. and only on 2, how police tracked down had thief and the other crimes he could be linked to. charges filed against a man who killed a car thief. he is charged with involuntary manslaughter. it started on saturday when they stole a car and then ran out of gas. he called the sheriff's department who told him the car was stolen. he confronted the suspects when they returned with gas and fired one shot at the car. he was hit. police say the other man drove the car to the tennis courts and left the body there. police are searching for the second suspect. the search is on for

whoever shot two teen brothers before 11:00 p.m. last night at a home. the 16 and 17-year-old brothers were in the front yard and a man drove up, got out and started shooting. police say both victims are in gangs but the 16-year-old said he no longer is. investigators believe the shooting may be connected to another shooting next door that happened over labor day weekend. bart and unions return to negotiations today. there is less than a month to go till the cooling off period expires and workers could go back on strike. today focused on work rules. next week they will talk about pay. the unions say safety is a big concern but bart says that is a diversion. >> safety is just a smoke screen. >> i think that it is unfortunate when people think

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news 5:00 p.m. we know the cause of the fire on mount diablo. investigators confirm it was started by someone who was target shooting. this comes as official hope to reopen the park in 4 days. 3100s of park land are burned. ktvu's john fowler got a look at the burn area and is here now to show us the damage. >> you can see how close the flames came to the summit look out tower that is under reconstruction. we are at 3800 feet and from here the view spectacular. but disheartening. a good sense of just how great the devastation is. you can only get from above. >> reporter: like a moon scape many areas once teaming with

homes and 128 buildings have been destroyed. >> reporter: one of the most destructive wi year. 60 homes destroyed by the clover fire that burned 12-1/2 square miles. it started on monday and spread to happy valley. driven by wind, high temperatures and a very dry summer. >> came over the house like a freight train. >> 128 other structures also destroyed and one death so far. firefighters receiverred the bought -- recovered the body of a 56-year-old man. the man refused to evacuate despite being urged to leave. many of those who lost their homes say they have nowhere to go. >> i work really hard on the house and just finished it recently and now it burned.

in contra costa county. four more dead birds tested positive for the virus that is transmitted through a bite of an infected mosquito. so far this year two people in contra costa county have come down with the disease. a plan to avoid early inmate releases from california prisons is waiting for governor jerry brown signature. the bill was approved yesterday. the plan asks judges to exend the year -- extend the year deadline. whole foods is at the center of a lawsuit. they are selling product containing pesticides that aren't registered with the state, they are all pet products. they can't comment on legal issues. the state could issue fines.
