making money. >> i saw someone dashing out of the store. >> reporter: and getting ripped off. his laptop gone in seconds. >> when someone bolts out the door that fast it is not because their pizza is burning. >> reporter: this morning about 12 hours after the theft a break in the case. >> one of our officers was able to conduct a car stop with the individual who was involved in that theft. >> called to the scene by officers. >> they asked you to identify the person. >> right. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> perfectly. >> the man may be no small time criminal. investigators have inquired about their man saying he may be connected to theft, robbery and violent crime cases. >> is this part of a group?

a larger organization or is this one or two individuals that may be committing crimes within the city of oakland and other cities as well. >> reporter: police say the description of the get away car helped officers locate the man in custody. he has been arrested but not charged. his name hasn't been released. a second individual has not been found. the owner is grateful for the arrest but still waiting for his laptop to be returned. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. to the south bay a search continues for one of five men expected in a home invasion that put a neighborhood on lock down. police say the men tried to rob a home just before noon. reverse 911 calls were sent out telling people to say inside and two schools were put on

lock down. officers caught four of the suspects, but the fifth suspect escaped. one of the guns was recovered this afternoon. no one was hurt. a man is charged with involuntary manslaughter after police say he killed a car thief in a strange case. it started on saturday when police say he and another man stole a car. they ran out of cason his property -- gas on his property. he called the sheriff's department and they said the car was stolen. he got his gun and confronted the suspects. police say he fired one shot at the car, he was killed. police say the other man drove off and abandon ther and the body -- car and the body. the 62-year-old was in court today and is expected to be released on bail. police are searching for a

gunman who opened fire on a house wounding two brothers. it happened before 11:00 p.m. last night. brothers were in the yard smoking when they say a man drove up, got out of his car and started shooting. police say the incident may have been gang related. investigators suggest it could be connected to a shooting next door over the labor day weekend. bart and the union return to the table today they discussed work rules and next week they will focus on pay. negotiators said they want contract provisions that make the system safer for workers and passengers. but bart calls that a diversionary tactic. >> safety is a smoke screen. >> i think it is unfortunate when people think of those things -- we are just trying to

use them. that is not the truth. >> bart says they are waiting for a response to its latest offer. the bay bridge has a new eastern span of the bay bridge and now the western bay bridge has a new name. ktvu's john sasaki spoke with willie brown today who now has a public namesake. john? >> like it or not this western bay bridge span is named after willie brown. they voted to rename this half of the bridge. critics say the senate and assembly broke their own rules in doing this. we talked to a man who filed a lawsuit to stop the process from going forward and we caught up with appointed but first we talk with -- opponent

delaying the eastern span of the bay bridge. live in san francisco, john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. lawmakers rejected a proposal that would have gave california a second chance tovote on funding for the high- speed rail. -- to vote on funding for the high-speed rail. today the senate voted to kill the amendment. he said the public has been miss led and the price tag blanked to 68 -- ballooned to $68 million. a bill failed today. bill 396. it would have banned ammunition magazines that held 10 bullets. the bill would have forced gun owners to dispose of them by july of next year. that was among several gun

control bills introduced this session. one of the bills would expand the people who are prohibited from owner fire arms and another would require permits and a fee when buying ammunition. the proposals came in response to the tragedy at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut. twitter is going public and it made it announcement with the help of their blue bird. ktvu's tom vacar is live with the implications of this offering. tom? >> people waited a long time and twitter finally said it will try to share but how did it announce it? where else, on twitter. here is what happened. tweeting out this afternoon it said we submitted a s1 to the sec for a planned ipo.

there hasn't been one time in my life that i used public assistance. it was the one time i needed it and i paid into it this entire time. >> edd apologized for the glitch and says payments have been made to 12,000. the computer problem may have had an impact on the unemployment rate. first time claims are down by 31,000 but that is due to two states that upgraded their systems and haven't been able toprocess their applications yet -- to process their applications yet. the unemployment held out at 7.3% for the four years since the recession ended. santa clara county is expanding the county park. they have finalized a deal to buy almost 500 acres north of

governor's desk. if signed minimum wage would go up to $9 and two years after that $10 an hour. >> significant increase for one person. especially if you have a family earning that. that will have a significant impact. >> he says if california's minimum wage kept up with inflaition it would be at $9.25 an hour. the governor supports the imn crease -- the increase. a judge blocked richmond's plan to use eminent domain. the judge said the process isn't gun yet. the city counsel -- done yet. the city counsel still has to approve a resolution of necessity to approve eminent domain. both sides have till tomorrow to file a brief.

the judge will make his ruling monday. new at 6:00 p.m. the possible eviction of two shops ignited a campaign to stop it. it is a campaign against the catholic church. rob roth is live where neighbors are banning together. rob? >> reporter: they are both small businesses. they both face the possibility of eviction from their landlord who happens to be the archdiocese of san francisco. >> reporter: the book store has been selling from this store front for the past 5 years. the owner told us he worries about being evicted. he is on a month to month lease and his agreement is being evaluated by his landlord, the archdiocese of san francisco and the same is true for his

owners. if they are evicted the church could charge higher rents. many neighbors are disappointed in the church. >> taking away god. >> reporter: it ignited a campaign, a neighborhood of small businesses. >> evicting two families who are going to be displaced. and may have to move out of the neighborhood. >> she said no decisions have been made. the conversations are taking place and money will not be the deciding factor but the rent helps fund a school at the church. here the owner says the street is changing, rents are sky rocketing. >> there has been agents coming into 24 street trying to find locations for clients who are big companies.
