we are live in san ramon where a star buck -- starbucks worker finds a fire. it started as a high speed chase on the freeway but it ended in a san rafael neighborhood in the yard of a home. we'll tell you what happened. a popular new jersey board walk still smoldering this morning after a major fire there. why this is the second tragedy for this area in less than a year. we saw a carr that was overturn -- a car that was overturned and crushed like a can almost. >> just incredible video. thousands of people rushing to higher ground in boulder, colorado to escape the raging flood waters. that is all ahead on the ktvu channel 2 morning news. i want to take you back out

live to san ramon this morning. our developing news this morning. businesses effected by a fire. we understand one person just heading to work there at that starbucks and reported a fire and the firefighters there we also have ktvu tara moriarty on the scene as well. we'll check in with her in just a moment. thank you for waking up with us on this friday morning september 13th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve did you see your friend mr. drizzle? >> he is back. we do have a lot of low clouds in place. and little pesky low will arrive. we warm up a little bit today. that low will keep that. the westerly breeze in place. plenty of low clouds and also lots of cooler lows this morning. and drizzle is back. yesterday it was here and again this morning. doesn't seem to be as wide spread but there are pockets where it's pretty deep. we will have to deal with that for a couple hours. low 50s and 60s. plenty of 50s here compared to

yesterday when it was all 50s. 63 at noon and a high of 67 degrees. the tropical clouds is made the low wrapping back around. for us it's just a low cloud deck. look for cool, breezy pattern. noticeably cooler on the lows. a lot of 60s and 70s coast and bay and low 80s. a few locations might pop one or two degrees. here is sal. >> it's become busy out there. we do have a new crash in fremont or relatively new any way. this crash on mission boulevard near warm spring. six cars. now if you get off the freeway and go this way it might effect you. for this part the police just got off the phone. it's not effecting freeway traffic unless you happen to be getting off. the freeway here does look good. let's go to the east span we just had a report of some sort of a crash trying to look for it somewhere.

it could be west of the bridge or nearby the toll plaza. but we're going to figure out where it is. it could be somewhere. it doesn't look like it's on the bridge. let's take a look at the toll plaza westbound. you can see traffic is a little bit low as you drive through. let's go back to the desk. happening right now crews still on the scene of an early morning fire at a san ramon strip mall. tara moriarty first reporter on the scene just about an hour ago. joins us now with the look at this the scene now how it's changed. tara. >> reporter: the starbucks worker came into work to open up her business when she discovered a fire in the back of the shop and decided to call 911. the fire raced in both directions. it went this way and this way. where you can see we have a ladder truck over there. flames broke out shortly after 4:00 this morning here at the trip mall. right off of interstate 680. firefighters are trying to hunt down the fire inside the walls

of the strip mall. >> right now the guys are tracking down that fire. it moved up the wall and horizontally. it's kind of a labor intensive fire because of the stucco building. >> reporter: there are three engines. two trucks on scene. they were able to squelch the initial fire within five minutes. so not much damage. there was quite a bit of a smoke so they have the fans blowing. it started on the outside. actually on this side that is closest to the main street there. the fire investigator pinpointed the fire but they haven't determined what started it. luckily no one was hurt. live from san ramon i'm tara moriarty. time is 6:04. new this morning the chp says an intoxicated driver led them

on a high speed case in san rafael. it ended when the car crashed into a house. claudine wong congress is is out there. >> we are in san rafael in this residential neighborhood. i want to show you where this ended here. take a look at the marks this car left behind when it jumped the curve, and then it hit that stop sign, went into the yard taking out part of the fence and the tree. the chp saying the tree saved this house. this all happened around 3:00 this morning. the chp says it started on highway 101. they tried to pull over the car but the driver took off. off the freeway into an industrial park and then into this neighborhood. when he tried to take the turn he didn't quite make it. crash into the home and waking up the family inside. >> we were all asleep.

and we heard bang. and then we came out. and that's what happened. >> reporter: when we got on scene the driver of the vehicle was already in the back of a police car but the passenger who was being released agreed to talk to be us. he said the two were headed home and said this when i asked where they were coming from. >> just from whereabouts of marin county. >> reporter: your buddy was drive. >> yeah. one minute you are doing good and then the next you are just getting in an accident and chased by police. >> reporter: he was taken to the hospital with minor bumps and bruises but as you can see there was seemingly just fine. taking a look back out here live on the scene again here's the damage left behind.

a little bit of a cleanup but it would be live in san ray fell. sometime today firefighters expect to contain this huge wild fire. kohl several neighbors tolds here. no word yet on who may have started the fire which is one of the biggest on record. >> to come back and see this is very shocking. in the short run it's shocking but you know i think it's a good thing. in the long run. >> the vegetation will be able to come in and nature can heal itself then. >> the fire burned more than 3100 acres. new information about a fast moving grass fire that

forced evacuations yesterday. a homeless man has been arrested accused of striking a match and throwing it starting the fire. police arrested that homeless man a short time. coming up at 6:25 we will let you hear from a volunteer fire chief that lost own house while he was out fighting to save others. for the second time in less than a year shops along a new jersey board walk have to rebuild after a disaster. a wind-whipped fire destroyed 50 businesses over an eight block stretch yesterday. many of the stores had just rebuilt after super storm sandy devastated the shore. the fire burned for about five hours and brought in 400

firefighters from neighboring towns. they had to build a 50-foot trench in the stand to they can. >> through all the efforts we have put in to help people rebuild to see this going on is unthinkable. >> reporter: the fire began in a frozen custard shop. it's too early to determine the exact saws but the fire was fueled by high winds and businesses with flammable tour roots. he had invested $10,000 to open it on labor day weekend. it was his first business venture which he hoped would pay off his student loans. happening now thousands of people rushing to higher ground in boulder, colorado after a warning a 30-foot surge of water, mud, and debris may be

heading their way. 4,000 people are under a mandatory evacuation order. thousands more have been told to stay inside. three neighborhoods are also being evacuated. look at the pictures. evacuation orders come in after days of rain triggered flash flooding that left three people dead and washed out roads and bridges. >> we'll see what the data tells us but this could easily be a 50-100 year flood. >> colorado's national guard is helping to evacuate people in the town of lions. it has been completely cut off by the flood waters. president obama has declared a state of emergency in three colorado counties. and we're getting incredible pictures of the flooding in boulder, colorado. we've been showing you as much as possible but officials are warning that if you stop to take a picture during a disaster, it could cost you your life. emergency responders say people have been intentionally wade into raging flood waters to take a picture for facebook or twitter or instagram. those waters are full of

effort. it weighs 100,000 tons. new this morning secretary of state john kerry is in switzerland for day two of talks with russian leaders. this is video of kerry and the russian foreign minister arriving for talks today at the u.n. headquarters. in a news conference following their meeting today the talks have been constructive. taliban fighters attacked the consulate in afghanistan today. the state department says all american personnel are safe. the attackers used car bombs just outside the compound. at least three members of the afghan security force were killed along with five of the attackers. new leader of al qaeda is calling for attacks on the u.s.. in an audio message posted on the internet he called on his followers to plan a large strike on the u.s. even if it takes years of patience to carry it out.

he named the boston marathon bombings on april 15th as an example of such an attack. a bill to add more emergency exits in limousines has passed the california senate. now it goes to the governors desk. proposed the bill after the deadly limousine fire that killed five women on the san mateo bridge back in may. this bill requires that limousines have at least two rear doors and one emergency rear push out window. a bill to create an early warning is -- supporters say the system could produce warnings of at least 30 second that a quake is coming. it's expected to cost about $80 million. there has been an arrest in the case of a bold theft thought on video in oakland. we showed you this yesterday

morning a man stealing a laptop. yesterday morning police stopped a man matching the description and arrested him. he may be connected to theft, robbery, and violent crime cases in several cities. it is a heartbreaking story about the young victims of the recession. the u.s. department of education has identified 47,000 children living in motels nation-wide. the number of homeless kids has jumped since 2007. the ramirez family mom angel, dad robert and two boys bo deand nicholas live in this room at the easy 8 motel. they were evicted from their home two years ago when robert ramirez lost his job. >> it's not ideal for anybody here but we all try to make it the best place we can.

free so she can raise money to build her shop. 6:18 is the time. sal, how is the friday morning commute? >> it's doing well. i was just looking at my information here. i can see there are no major accidents expect for one that was just cleared website at the bay bridge. i want to she you the backup it created at the mccarthur maze westbound. it's where it came down the foot of the maze. we watched the chp move everything. in fact, we can see it they were moving everything over to the east lot of the bay bridge. but it did its damage. one person was hurt and taken to the hospital by the way in an overturned car. the traffic here is not all that good getting to the bridge. i want to show you from our toll plaza view that it's kind of a bottleneck there as they clear the crash. it's right there at the bottom of our screen or the middle of our screen. let's move along and take a look at the richmond bridge. that traffic looks good in case you are considering using that

to marin county. if you are driving to contra costa county highway 4 is slow from antioch to pittsburgh but it's not as bad as it has been. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. happy friday. this low spinning out here will play into our weekend weather. there could be a slight bump up in temps. 47 in tahoe. 56 in ukiah. yesterday at this time it was 60-64-65 degrees. stronger delta breeze has been ramping up a little bit. some of the higher elevations and fewer areas on the coast have been around 30 miles an hour. that is a big change from yesterday even sfo west. more of a west, northwest. plenty of low clouds in play. some of the low cloud deck producing drizzle. when that low comes in, it will produce a lot more drizzle. partly cloudy skies. maybe a few isolated showers up

toward reno. this is a bad, bad situation in colorado. denver thinks it quieted down a little bit. if you know the big thompson flood from 1976 that was a historic one. hopefully things will calm down. i don't think they're out of the woods quite yet. for us fog and then sun. that low that is moving in will continue to bring mist and drizzle. a cooler pattern will take us into the weekend. low clouds, fog, and then sun and morning drizzle. a little breezy at times. i notice this morning it's picking up. it's stronger out of the west. 60s and 70s and low to mid 80s here. temperatures it looks like they will not warm up too much. they will start a cool down on saturday. and then sunday what we're looking at is that low begins to move in.

that is definitely going to pick up what we call that fog bank and also give us cloudy skies and drizzle and a pretty good cooling trends. some airline passengers got an unexpected deal when they went to book their holiday air travel. united airlines is briefly giving away tickets for free. united says it accidentally filed fairs for zero dollars. some reported buying tickets for $5-10 in total. no word if they will honor those tickets sold. a big jump in crime in one east bay city. how the police chief is responding to this grim report. plus jk rowling new project that should make harry potter fans happy. ♪

somebody in the head with a chair. several witnesses were able to point out the suspect to police. he was taken into custody. time is 6:25. the destruction from that huge wild fire burning in shasta county is a lot worse than first thought. the fire outside of redding destroyed at least 68 homes. that is more than double the last effort. one man who refused to leave his house he died in the fire. one volunteer fire chef has been fighting the claims out there all week. chef doug raced to save one home moments after finding out he lost his own house in the fire. >> at that point i wasn't thinking about my house. i was at a house on clover dale lane making sure that one didn't burn. there wassing to in my mind but saving the house i was on. >> the fire has burned 8,000 acres since it started

away from the coast. i don't think there will be much change by it. low clouds, fog, then sun. morning mist and drizzle. not wide spread but there is plenty out there. a couple reports coming in. 60s and 70s. mainly low to mid 80s. here is sal. we have that crash at the bay bridge. it has backed traffic up to the east shore freeway westbound as you drive down to the bay bridge to the traffic was held up for a bit but now we're seeing it arrive at the toll plaza. a 37-year-old woman with moderate injuries was taken by medics to highland hospital. she is conscious and she is only injured moderately. let's move 5:long and take a look at northbound 101 san jose. that traffic there is looking good. off to a good start 85 and 280

as well. let's go back to the desk. happening right now fire crews in san ramon are still at the scene of an early morning strip mall fire. ktvu tara moriarty was the first reporter there about 90 minutes ago. she is back now with more on the damage and you've got new information tara. >> reporter: that is right. firefighters just determined there are no, ma'am other hot spots heres at -- no other hot spots here at the strip mall. the fire was contained to the starbucks so that is good news. but the smoke spread to the other businesses here. and crews had to bust down the front door of that bank. that is why if with swing around here there is such a heavy, heavy police presence. we got new pictures. the fire breaking out shortly before or after 4:00 this morning. a starbucks worker discovered smoke at the back of the shop and called 911. firefighters busted open the stucco on the outside wall. that is where they believed the fire started and spread inside

the wall. >> employees not injured. she was the only one that was here. the rest of the businesses in the strip mall just have a little bit of smoke inside. but firefighters are all safe and nobody got injured. >> reporter: we have three engines, two trucks on scene. some are just starting to pull out here. crews were very aggressive in this attack. again this is a strip mall. all these store there is is a cheesecake shop. a pizza place. they share an at ticket space -- attic space so the flames could have spread quickly. an investigator is on scene to try to figure out what started this fire. live from san ramon i'm tara moriarty. new this morning a suspected drunk driver is behind bars accused of leading the chp on a chase from highway 101 to a residential neighborhood in san rafael. claudine wong is there at a home where the suspect came

dangerously close to crashing right into that house. claudine. >> reporter: certainly it could have been a lot worse. let me show you tam rick drive. the car was coming from this direction and tried to make the turn and couldn't make it. that is when they came on to this turn. and going right into that fence and that tree. the chp says it started as an attempted traffic stop on highway 101. officers say the driver was going 80 in a 55 zone. ended up in this neighborhood. speeding at 60-65 miles an hour. there were two people in that car. we talked to the passenger that said he wasn't awake for most of it. >> the last 15 seconds of waking up. it's like turn. and the carp losing his control. >> reporter: when you woke up were police already behind you guys? >> possibly. i mean last thing i remember is

taking a turn too tight and next thing you know we're in the back of a house. >> reporter: was your buddy that was driving were you drinking? >> i'm a christian i don't drink. >> reporter: was your buddy drinking? >> i can't comment on that. >> reporter: the chp can comment on that. they say the chase lasted three to four minutes and know exactly what is to blame for the crash this morning. >> high rate of speed probably trying to make the turn. the passenger suffered minor injuries. >> reporter: drunk? >> yes. >> reporter: the chp did find beer bottles in the car. a new police report shows a sharp jump in crime in berkeley in the first six months of this

year. robberies up 25%. burglaries up 34%. there have been four homicides so far this year in berkeley. last year there were five the entire year. now the police chief will present the findings to city council next week. he says he needs more police officers out on the streets. woman in berkeley is pleading for the public's help to find her fiance's killer three years after his death. amber nelson says she was walking home with her fiance after celebrating his birthday on september 12th, 2010. she says two men tried to rob them near the ashby bart station. she was punched in the face. her fiance was shot and killed. >> it's now three years and there is still no major leads. there are no named suspects in the investigation. >> now she visits the spot where celedon was killed every day. she's created a memorial garden in his honor. san francisco based twitter is going public.

the seven-year-old company is taking advantage of a new law that allows it to file confidential paper work to begin the process for the initial public offering. that means it does not have to disclose financial information until later in the process. the company announced its ipo in a tweet. >> now to our continuing coverage of the bart labor talks. bart board of directors is telling bart workers not to expect a lot more money when jonext week. and the board has no plans to intervene in the contract talks. the two sides remain far apart on the main issues with the new strike deadline less than a month away. they reject the unions claim that the labor dispute stems on concerns of labor safety. >> they are just a smoke screen. they don't want a 20% pay increase. they have never come below that line. >> i think it's unfortunate when you think of the things we try to use them as leverage that is not the truth. >> the two sides have not had a

joint bargaining session since august 11th when the 60 day cooling off period began. time 16:38. the bay area has lottery fever. that is because tomorrow night's power ball jackpot, pam, is up to $317 million. that is a $63 million increase from wednesday night's jackpot. ticket sales expected to go through the roof today and tomorrow. the power ball jackpot peaked at $590 million back in may. >> it's always fun to dream. >> oh yeah. me too. 6:39 is the time. new jersey board walk up in flame. but the jersey shore is recovering from a second disaster in less than a year. we're going to have a live report. the minimum wage rate in california looks like it's about to increase and it would make it the highest in the nation. we'll lay out the plan and tell you what people are saying about that. good morning. we are looking at traffic that

welcome back. happening now part of the new jersey shore that was just recovering from super storm sandy now has another disaster to recover from. flames engulfed a row of businesses along the board walk in the area. reporter chris welch is there live this morning to show us the damage and the cleanup ten the problems -- cleanup and the problems there. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you said it. this is really not something the folks wanted to deal with. first hurricane sandy and now this. if you look behind me you can see remnants of what was left. the charred buildings after the blaze ripped through here yesterday afternoon. and really throughout the night. only this morning that officials say they finally have it contained. but after all is is said and done about four blocks worth of board walk destroyed and as many as 50 businesses. just as the iconic board walk in seaside park new jersey had begun to heal from hurricane sandy, tragedy strikes again.

a fire burned through at least 20 businesses leaving damage spread over six blocks. >> this is obviously just unthinkable situation. for us to be standing here and watching this what is going on behind all of you. it's just unthinkable. >> reporter: several firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. no word on what caused the fire but investigators are looking at reports it may have started at a frozen custard shop. >> i couldn't see what i was believing. there was more flames than i have seen in my life. >> reporter: seaside park gain national attention after hurricane sandy tore through it. costing the city $8 million to rebuild it. >> this is us. as soon as this is over, we will pick ourselves up, whether dust ourselves off and get back to work. >> reporter: that of course was governor christie last night.

we expect to hear from the governor again this morning in just under about an hour from now. we hope to get some answer. one of the big questions we have how did this fire start? hthat when the governor takes the podium he will address that. >> thank you for that live report. california is poised to raise the minimum wage. the legislation was approved by lawmakers now sitting on the governor brown's desk. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us now from east palo alto to tell us what is in store for workers and businesses. i would think a lot of them pretty happy. >> reporter: yes and in recent weeks you may remember that many fast food workers staged a walk out. demanding they get $15 an hour. they say any type of increase would help. the legislature voted to hike the minimum wage to $9 next july and raise to $10 by

january 2016. governor jerry brown has indicated he will sign the bill. the move is touted by democrats who say it's needed for the state's struggling workers but republican lawmakers and business groups say it would put california's economic recovery at risk and lead to fewer lower wage jobs. in san jose and san francisco the minimum wage is already at $10 an hour. we spoke to people about how they feel about other bay area cities going to that rate. >> i think it's good. for mcdonalds workers they need it. taco bell they need it. home depot, they need it. >> reporter: but? >> but everything is going to go up. prices will go up. food, milk. everything is going up after this. >> reporter: economists also seem split on the issue. some don't believe it will help poor families because so many low wage workers are secondary earners and not the breadwinners of the family.

we'll go 77 palo alto. 76 in mountain view. today a slight warmup but then look for a lot of low clouds and fog. sunday will be the day that low moves in. as it does that will give us another round of drizzle. i think a little cool and breezy pattern as we head into the afternoon on sunday. monday and tuesday we just keep it there. pam and dave. google continues to expand in the bay area. the san jose mercury news says google leased an office in sunnyvale where it plans to move 1,000 employees. they leased the offices in technology corners near innovation way and 11th avenue. they also rented 715,000 square feet at that complex last year. walmart is planning to cut down on or completely eliminate ten chemicals found in household and beauty products. it will monitor the products.

claiming that the legislature broke its own rules by failing to seek local consensus and naming a state structure after a living person. while governor brown who is also against the name change does not have the power to veto the nonbinding resolution he can order cal tran to not put up any signs noting the new name. san francisco's bag ban -- every restaurant owner knows they have to use environmentally friendly bags starting october 1st. restaurants will have to charge $10 cents for the bag. now doggy bags and bags for hot soup containers will be free. this is the last phase of a law that bans plastic bags in super markets and pharmacies in 2007 and retail stores last year. time is 6:57. 49ers quarterback collin 49er nick is featured in a corn maze. yep, there it is. this is just west of kaepernick's hometown.
