avoid the foul smell. sewage problems have cropped up once again during the a's game. a day game is about to begin a half hour from now. good afternoon, brian. >>reporter: good afternoon. 12:35 is the start time, but talking with stadium officials as well as fans, how long will the 45-year-old coliseum last. stadium officials say they're doing the best they can to maintain it. >> it certainly has seen its share of exciting events, but taking care of its plumbing certainly not one of them. >> this is something that has to be fixed because the raiders and angels will be here for a while, and if they want to keep this venue open, they've got to fix it. >>reporter: during the game yesterday, you could see a's players hanging onto the steps of the dugout because water had over flowed from a nearby toilet onto the floor. >> this is just something that happened last night minor that's been taken care of.

it's not a big deal. >>reporter: operations officials say an automatic toilet is to blame for the water that over flowed. >> the sensors kept setting off because there were people in there. >>reporter: although players say there was a foul smell, officials are downplaying it saying it's nothing compared to back in june when both locker rooms were affected and a crew was called in. today just a plumbing crew as a precaution. >> they're snaking the lines to make sure they're clear. >>reporter: the coliseum is 45 years old, and some say this just adds to the argument that the as may need a new home. >> i did see a lot of people in the dugout cleaning it out. stuff happens. >>reporter: i did ask about water that was seen last week near the walkway. water was seen on the floor as well near the visiting clubhouse. stadium officials tell me it

might be because the property is 22 feet below sea level and why water probably comes through. as for the problematic toilet, they've switched the setting from automatic to manual. the as are making a big playoff push, opening the third level seats and will open up an additional 12,000 feet during the additional series. we have developing news now out of oakland where a police chase of a burglary suspect ended in this car crash. it started around 9 this morning when witnesses reported seeing a car burglary suspect. police attempted to stop him, but he drove off. after a short chase the suspect smashed into a parked car and tree and ran off. officers still caught up with him. he was arrested and a passenger in his car was also arrested. the suspect was slightly injured in the crash. police have released a new sketch in the sexual assault

case. police are looking for an african-american man 30 to 40 between 5'10" and 6 feet. he's described as having a thin build with some writing tattooed on his neck. police say he grabbed a housekeeper at knife point at the doubletree hotel last friday. he's accused of tying her up and assaulting her before she fought him off. anyone with information is asked to call police. police are searching for a man responsible for a string of burglaries in san mateo. we have more on what police are saying and how businesses are trying to protect themselves. good afternoon, claudia. >>reporter: good afternoon. we're here on 25th avenue and el camino, and this has been a target of criminals. businesses say they don't believe they're helpless. at the patio cafe there's relief that it was not one of

six businesses all burglarized in a single night last week, but the owners know what it feels like. >> we went through at least five or six times every yearbook in 2000. >>reporter: so did the folks at the camera shop, hit by burglars in the past in what they call a series of smash and grabs. >> for us it was quite a big thing, and being hit several times in success one after the other with a few weeks apart was really kind of devastating, and in fact our insurance company dropped us. >> it's unclear how much this latest crime spree will cost businesses, but the burglar left one very important piece of evidence behind, his picture caught on a surveillance camera. >> right now that is our best suspect lead.

>>reporter: police will work with past victims to help solve this crime. >> we see little marks on the glass where they've made attempts, but luckily the glass has held. >>reporter: the patio cafe took the door that burglars went in and reinforced it. no one's gotten in since. >> this is new and the extra lock. >> new as well. >>reporter: that did the trick? >> it did. >>reporter: businesses we talked to say they're considering upping their security even more, maybe extra locks and cameras, anything that owners say could convince criminals they're not an easy target. the mother of the gunman in monday's navy yard rampage is speaking out today in a statement she read to reporters in new york, offering her apologies and said he can no

longer hurt anyone else. >> i don't know why he did what he did, and i've never be able to ask him why. to the families of the victims, i am so very sorry that this has happened. my heart is broken. >> authorities say the former navy reservist killed 12 people at a navy yard in washington d.c. before he was killed in a shootout with police. they say he bought the shotgun he used in the shooting after passing a background check at a virginia gun store last saturday. today a house hearing on sequestration focused attention on the navy yard shooting and whether budget cuts had affected security. pentagon officials appealed to the house armed services committee for more money saying that is he questtation cuts have hurt the country's line of defense.

>> let me categorically assure you that based on testimony that admiral green is giving as we're sitting here that the budget issue did not degrade the security at the navy yard, and in any way contribute to this. >> the gunman had left the navy, but had cleared his background. wall street is moving into record territory after a surprised decision by the federal reserve just announced in the last hour. the fed decided against reducing its stimulus for the u.s. economy which had been expected. instead the fed will continue to buy $85 billion a month in bonds, at least for now because of things the economy still needs for support. taking a live look at the dow right now. it is at record territory. it is up 159 points at 15,680.

the nasdaq is also up 39 and s&p also in record territory, up 22. apparently an age-old outdoor pastime is now forbidden in san francisco. the san francisco chronicle reports police are cracking down on street chess. for decades people have gathered to play between fifth and sixth, many of them homeless. police say illegal gambling and drug use have become rampant. police hope to work out a plan to allow it in the future. what is now the strictest smoking ordinance in the county, the city council approving it to ban smoking in the down ton area on sidewalks and patios of businesses. it also prohibits smoking at all apartment and condo complexes, both outside and

inside the units. last night was the first reading of the amended ordinance. it will be reviewed before it goes into effect about 90 days later. it's been a tough week for train riders as they deal with mechanical delays during commute hours. the agency has run into problems all week. a spokeswoman told the san francisco examiner that the agency is dealing with an aging fleet of trains. she said many are now 25 years old. it's having a big impact on passengers. >> just last wednesday we've been late every morning get into san francisco. it's just delay after delay. >> when they have had delays i've been fairly impressed with the response time in getting back on track. >> there is a money plan for an upgrade in 2019. in the meantime they plan to do what it can to maintain the old trains. an audit by san francisco's city controller has uncovered a

number of problems with the driving and training program. the chronicle reports they're currently short 100 drivers because the agency did not hire enough recruits. the audit also shows training classes are often cancelled because of chronic absenteeism among instructors and some have not driven a bus in years. in one case auditors learned a trainer fell asleep with a rookie driver at the wheel. the clock keeps ticking toward another possible bart strike, just 22 days left until the 60 day cooling-off period ends october 10. bart and its union sat down behind closed doors again this morning to try to reach a deal on a labor contract. the union has told us it has made concessions which would save bart more than $10 million, but the chief negotiator says the two sides are still more than $100 million apart. the two sides still say they

>>reporter: this 711 has been busy all morning because it's considered to be lucky because someone won $2.3 million here earlier this year and customers are hoping that luck will rub off on them. tonight's jackpot is $400 million. the lottery association says it has a cash value of $223 million before taxes. the manager of this gas station says sales have tripled with customers buying up power ball tickets. his store is considered luck because over the summer a woman hit five of the numbers and won $1.6 million after buying a ticket there. . >> people were winning, and i said i have to play to win.

22,000 miles above the earth surface. a bus slammed into the side of a train in canada killing six people. it happened during the morning commute in ottawa. thirty people were injured. 11 of them critically. dramatic video here of a man being rescued from the window of his fifth floor new york city apartment. he wound up dangling from the window ledge, unable to reach the fire escape. someone walked across this ladder and grabbed the man and led him to safety. all the while witnesses yelled for the man to hold on until help arrived. on capitol hill today members of the state department are facing tough questions at a hearing looking into last year's deadly terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. >> it's skeptical. i am skeptical and people i

amtrak train hit a car. this happened in oakland at east ninth street and high street. these are live pictures. some injuries were reported. we don't know the severity of injuries, but we understand there are no injuries on the train. the passengers are being taken back to the square amtrak train station. the breaking news that an amtrak train strikes a car this oakland and some of the car passengers suffered injuries. missing anything? the seven figure lottery ticket now sitting at lost and found. america's best known coffee train tries to address one of the phoneiest issues.
